Jazz Walk is a five block street party

Jazz Walk is a five block street party, punctuated by individual rooms of music. Some of the rooms serve spirits, but if you are on the street you are not left out.

Jazz Walk has an atmosphere all its own. Perhaps it's the warm night air. Perhaps it's the forbidden pleasure of walking down the middle of a street which is normally full of cars.

And it might just be the music.

For those who say they don't like jazz ... well, know that jazz is a catchall term. Jazz means everything from boisterous Dixieland, to moody, smoky, sensuous melodies. And everything inbetween.

The Jazz Walk in the North City Business District Tuesday night, August 13, 2019, was a family party on the street. Food trucks were in the middle of the street and the very popular Leena's Restaurant sold "jazz bites" from a table in front of the restaurant.

There were information booths from North City Water, and Ronald Wastewater. Commissioner Atkinson says the alligator is sewer humor for things found in the sewer pipes. There was an alligator in a Florida sewer years ago - at least that is the story.

From alligators to ShARCCs - the Parks Department was there, telling people about Shoreline parks and the new ShARCC.

Venues like the venerable North City Tavern, the newish Easy Monkey Taphouse, and the Jazz club North City Bistro sold drinks for patrons during the 45 minute sets.

Outside, the Shoreline Rotary and the Rotary Club of Lake Forest Park combined to put on a very large Beer Garden next to the street - and next to one of the three outdoor performance spaces.

The beer garden was packed from the time it opened until late night. Not sure if the beer was the attraction or if people were basically renting seats.

What is it about fire trucks and kids?

There were fun things for the kids. Michelle Pidduck from Shoreline Fire brought along a fire truck for kids to explore.

And face painting is always popular. Look at the rapt attention of the potential customers.

The staff from Namasté Yoga, who are in the Evergreen building just past NE 180th, were on the street this night to talk to people.

Families just pulled up a curb or a set of steps and took a break to talk or eat.

Oh - and did I mention the hearse? Nightmare at the Nile was there, promoting their events. They have music, but it would not be called "jazz."

So if you missed this event, watch for it next year in August. It just gets bigger and better every year.

"Birch Pereira and The Gin Joints" inspire dancers

There was a big, happy street party going on outside Tuesday, but inside the Jazz Walk venues were mostly small and intimate. People sat and listened to the best jazz in the area - and sometimes they got up and danced.

Some of the venues served beer and wine - which may have contributed to the dancing - but the music was infectious.

The Seattle Women's Jazz Orchestra was new to Jazz Fest but were lively and very popular. The outdoor seating area was usually full when they were playing.

Jacqueline Tabor didn't allow photos inside the venue where she was performing, so she struck a few saucy poses outside for the photographers.

Music Center has their studio on 15th. They put some of their students outside to perform for the pedestrians. A resident of the Arabella I, which is also within the Jazz Walk mall area, brought his guitar out to the street to play for the crowd. It was that kind of event.

Jazz Walk - where the beats and the eats and the treats hit the streets

Wednesday, August 16, 2017

The North City Jazz Walk filled five blocks of the business district with jazz and food and people on Tuesday, August 15.

Photos by Steven H. Robinson

Treats! Melissa Banker holds the leashes while son Chace Banker holds the rapt attention of their Norwegian Elkhounds with a piece of Krispy Kreme donut.

Where the feet meet the street.
People were on the street throughout the event, as well as filling the eleven venues.

How's this for a different kind of treat? One of the most popular jazz singers in the Northwest, Greta Matassa, performed at the Arts Council's Showmobile outdoor stage.

The Eats were many and varied. Besides Krispy Kreme, and the Here and There food truck, Leena's and Peking House moved to the street. Here and There had a steady but manageable line all through the event. Easy Monkey, North City Bistro, North City Lounge, and Vesper served food inside.

North City Water had popcorn and snacks. Standard Bakery has Sweet Treats. Bethel Lutheran had root beer floats. Rain City had pretzels and beer.

There were a lot of options.

Hook Me Up is a loud and lively, toe-tapping group. They always play at an outside venue, filling the street with music. They kept the beat going into the night.

Vesper Restaurant and Bar has enough indoor space for the bands and some spontaneous dancers. Music performed by Hopscotch and Daniel Arteaga.

13 year old Brooke Lambert was one of the featured singers at the Bethel Lutheran venue. Young in age, but a mature and professional sounding singer, she's one to watch.

The sun was going down and the Rain City Rotary Beer Garden had the best seats in town.
