North City Jazz Walk is a jazz festival and a street party

Thursday, August 18, 2016

Smiling faces, good food, take the baby
and sit wherever you like

By Diane Hettrick

The North City Jazz Festival Tuesday night was both a jazz festival and a street party.

If you bought a bracelet, you could go into a venue, sit down, and listen to a set before moving on to the next venue.

But if you had children or just felt like staying outside in the warm evening air, it was also a terrific street party.

Leena's remodel is complete and the restaurant is open.
But this night, they were on the street handing out ice cream cones.

When it first opened, not a lot of people were on the street. This was a boon for people who don't like to stand in line. As the evening went on, more and more people came. There were long lines for venues and food, but somehow that was part of the fun. The atmosphere was happy and people were friendly.

With most of the North City business district on 15th NE closed from NE 175th to NE 180th, the whole street became a pedestrian mall. Several of the businesses moved to the street with food and free samples.

What is it about little boys and fire trucks?

There was a fire truck, bicycle police, the emergency communications van, and a food truck. Rotary had an outside beer garden, carefully fenced off to keep it age appropriate.

The outside venues had chairs

Some very big acts were outside - Greta Matassa was on the Arts Council sound stage.

Eugenie Jones was outside the new Bethel Lutheran location. Music spilled into the street. People danced.

If you missed it, it will be back next year. Mark your calendar. And thank all those hard-working volunteers who made it happen.

Dance, Dance, Dance at the North City Jazz Walk with Kiki Valera

Sunday, July 31, 2016

Kiki Valera y Los Guajibaros
The North City Jazz Walk is pleased to announce the return of the stage at Dorian Photography featuring Kiki Valera y Los Guajibaros.

Dancing is encouraged!

Kiki started playing tres under the guidance of his famous father Felix Valera Miranda when he was only 6 years old.

At 11, he enrolled in one of the most prestigious music schools in Cuba, the Conservatorio Esteban Salas in Santiago de Cuba and by 15, he was performing internationally.

During his years as an electronic engineering student at ISPJAM (Instituto Superior Polytecnico Julio Antonio Mella) he co-founded the Cuban group Septeto Turquino.

Around that same time, his family was the subject of research by famed musicologist Danilo Orozco, which resulted in the first recording and documentary of his family's musical heritage - La Antologia Integral de Son.

In the early '90's, Kiki played cuatro and keyboards in the popular salsa group Los Karachi. At the same time, he was recording and touring with his family as La Familia Valera Miranda became well known across Europe.

His interest in sound engineering led to yet another career in music production and in 2000 he opened one of Santiago's most respected home recording studios. Since then, he has been performing, teaching, recording and producing.

The music begins at 6:30 on Tuesday, August 16 in North City.

Stephanie Porter Quartet at the North City Water District for Jazz Walk

Tuesday, July 26, 2016

Stephanie Porter performs at Jazz Walk
Stephanie Porter is a premier jazz vocalist who lives to sing. Her recordings have charted on the top 10 nationally and internationally.

Musically inspired at an early age, Stephanie found herself mesmerized by music and the many layers of interpretations of songs by instrumentalists, as well as vocalists.

She is particularly moved by jazz and its progression of energy combined with cool. She is a stylist who has been influenced by many styles of music.

“It’s difficult to define a specific artist as my major influence ... Music is like a painting or a garden. How do you choose a color or flower? I am inspired by individuality and love to hear different interpretations from creative artists. I strive to be true to the songs I sing, honest with the audiences listening and enveloped in creativity with my band."

The North City Jazz Walk will be held on August 16, 2016 along 15th NE in North City. Music begins at 6:30pm.

For tickets or more information, see the Jazz Walk website.

Greta Matassa plays the main stage of the North City Jazz Walk Aug 16

Sunday, July 24, 2016

Greta Matassa plays Jazz Walk
They’re back! Greta Matassa and the Critical Mass Big Band return to the 2016 North City Jazz Walk for another round of jazz and the American Songbook.

Once again they will appear on the Main Stage/ Showmobile Stage. They’ll start at 6:30, and there’ll be plenty of outdoor seating, so all Jazz Walk guests should be able to catch a full set of these two fine artists.

Greta Matassa is, quite simply, the finest jazz vocalist in the Northwest.
She communicates a great sense of the lyrics, her huge range lets her soar and plunge without sounding strained, and her sense of time is impeccable.
Whether her tune is blues or jazz influenced, her singing sweeps listeners away.

Critical Mass is an outstanding full big band that combines fine playing with sensitive dynamics that make for a truly exciting band. Teaming up with Greta is always the highlight of the band’s season.

Directing the instrumental portion of the program will be trumpeter Dave Jewitt, who brings terrific musicianship to the stage. As is custom, Shoreline arranger (and attorney) Keith McClelland will direct the band during the vocal portion of the performance.

What’s new? Keith has written new arrangements for Greta especially for this performance, and she will sing more of Keith’s charts that have never been performed at any Jazz Walk. So, even veteran Jazz Walk guests will hear lots of material they have never heard before.

Great artists, longer playing, more seating, new material … what’s not to like?
