Jazz Camp was a popular venue at Jazz Walk

Thursday, August 15, 2013

The Jazz Camp, sponsored by the Shoreline - Lake Forest Park Arts Council was a very popular venue.

They played until 10pm

The Jazz Camp students played on the portable Showmobile stage which is loaded in and assembled by volunteers. The sound system itself takes an hour to set up and disassemble. But the acoustics are excellent and the kids provide great entertainment.

A taste of Jazz Walk - a few photos to get started

Wednesday, August 14, 2013

I heard that Jazz Walk sold out this year, that the Greta Matassa venue had a line. and some groaning about the ticket booth being at the opposite end of the street from the parking. Other than that, I've never seen so many people in such a collective good mood. Everyone was smiling and friendly, moving rather briskly along the street to get to the next venue.

Two of our regular photographers were there and we will be publishing their photos. Here are a few from regular contributors, just to get you started.

This family was excited to have their picture in the paper

There were a lot of family groups like this one - grandma and grandpa, the parents, all the kids including the toddlers who kept toddling off, and the babies in strollers - who looked a little tired by the end, but were very content.

I should have had someone take photos of the animals - I met a pair of Bichon Frise, a Newfoundland, a boxer, a Saint Bernard, and a very large cat on a leash.

If you're going to be run over by a bus, it may as well be One Sweet Ride. The Krispy Kreme folk were there, handing out giant donut holes on toothpicks, and paper baker's hat (see the family photo above).

I saw a lot of Shoreline councilmembers, a school board member, a couple of current candidates, Arts Council staff, stalwart neighborhood volunteers who were also helping with this event, and hundreds of people of all ages that I've never knowingly seen before. It was a great mix.

Volunteers wore red shirts and were stationed at the doorway to check for bracelets. Judy Parsons was assigned to the North City Lounge where the Jimmy Holden Quartet with Tim Haines played driving blues and soulful vocals. Mark handed his camera to someone else to take this shot.

Hook Me Up at Frank Lumber Delivery Store and drink beer to eradicate polio

Thursday, August 8, 2013

Hook Me Up

2013 NORTH CITY JAZZ WALK
Tuesday, August 13, 7-10pm
Hook Me Up to play at the
Frank Lumber Delivery Store

Back by popular demand – this hit band from last year is back. For those who like to sit back with a libation while taking in the music, come and have a glass of wine or beer at the Rain City Rotary Beer and Wine Garden (must have an entry bracelet) and listen to this great group – where jazz meets pop and bebop.

The venue is being sponsored by the Lancaster Law Firm and the Rain City Rotary, and the Beer and Wine Garden is to raise money for Stop Polio Now.

Rotary International’s PolioPlus Program and Rain City Rotary of Shoreline
“In 1985 there were more than 125 polio endemic countries. The disease killed or crippled more than 1,000 people a day, most of them children. Rotary launched PolioPlus that year, a multi-million dollar campaign to immunize the world’s children against polio.
In 1988 Rotary joined with the World Health Organization to wipe out polio. Since then, other partners have joined the Rotary and WHO in the Global Polio Eradication Initiative: UNICEF, U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and more recently the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
Reported polio cases have dropped 99 percent. Polio remains endemic to only three countries: Afghanistan, Nigeria, and Pakistan. The world is on the threshold of eradicating the wild poliovirus. The last 1 percent of polio cases are the most difficult to prevent because the virus lingers in some of the most hardest-to-reach areas of the world. Rotary and its partners are “this close” to making polio the second human disease, after smallpox, to be eradicated.” (from the Rotary International brochure 940-EN 812). More information on PolioPlus

Since Rain City Rotary formed in 2008, members have contributed to the global polio eradication effort. This will be the 4th year in a row that Rain City Rotary has hosted the Beer and Wine Garden at the Jazz Walk. All proceeds from the sale of beer and wine go directly to PolioPlus.

Donna Eggen administering oral polio vaccine
in Africa

In 2007, member Kim Lancaster travelled to Ethiopia with a group of local Rotarians to administer the oral polio vaccine. Donna Eggen made the same trip in 2009. Rotarians go “hut to hut” with local health workers to help administer the vaccine. Kim and Donna have been forever changed by their experiences with the wonderful people of Ethiopia.

Rain City Rotary meets most Thursday evenings either at Shoreline City Hall or a local restaurant. One Saturday a month, members join in doing a local service project such as serving meals to Tent City 3, painting and clean-up at Pathways for Women shelter in Lynnwood. Krispy Kreme Cruiser coming to North City Jazz Walk Aug 13

Monday, August 5, 2013

The Krispy Kreme Cruiser hits the road

North City Jazz Walk, August 13, 7 to 10pm on 15th NE in North City

Reminiscent of the early years when Krispy Kreme would mobilize its small fleet of delivery trucks to bring its signature doughnuts to fans of all ages, the Krispy Kreme Cruiser is a newly restored and bowtie branded 1960 Flxible Starliner helmed by Krispy Kreme brand ambassadors and team members who will guide the sweet ride across the country inviting fans to join in the daily celebration of the world’s most famous doughnut.

Because our purpose is to “touch and enhance lives through the joy that is Krispy Kreme,” we felt that it was important to get out of our shops and take the party on the road.

And the party will be in North City - donuts and jazz are a natural fit. The street edition of Jazz Walk is free - so come get your jazz fix and donut fix in the same place.

Jazz Walk has new venue in new Shoreline Water building - Stephanie Porter is featured

Friday, July 26, 2013

Stephanie Porter will perform at Jazz Walk

2013 NORTH CITY JAZZ WALK

AUGUST 13th - 7-10 pm

Hear Stephanie Porter at new Shoreline Water District building

Compelling vocalist Stephanie Porter returns to the North City Jazz Walk backed by a wealth of talent including Darin Clendenin/piano, Steve Yusen/drums, Mike West/sax, and Dan O’Brien/bass.

She comes from a musical family where she was steeped in the tradition of the leading vocalists of the 50’s and 60’s. Stephanie draws upon not only the American Songbook but also pop, R/B, and soul. She has performed in England and Europe, and is a favorite of audiences at the Triple Door and the Pampas Room in Seattle. Recently, she wowed audiences with her performances with the Seattle Repertory Jazz Orchestra. Her recent albums Mood Swings and How Deep is the Ocean? have received airplay in the US and abroad.

Grand opening of new Shoreline Water District building

August 13 is also the first day of business for the Water District in their newly expanded and renovated administration building. Their new building includes a large, 64-person capacity meeting room available for use by outside non-profit groups and other governmental agencies. Says Diane Pottinger, District Manager, “We’re thrilled to be able to host Stephanie Porter for this Jazz Walk event as the very first community use of our meeting room!”

The upgraded and expanded facility will enable the Water District to be far more efficient at serving its ratepayers: in addition to the public meeting room and much-needed space for operations, the building finally offers public restrooms, enhanced seismic strengthening, energy efficiency and improved security. The public’s much-loved drive-through window and night drop box will once again be available.

Breakfast Rotary sponsors Stephanie Porter at Shoreline Water District building

The Shoreline Breakfast Rotary will be selling beer and snacks at the Shoreline Water District Building to attendees on the night of the Jazz Walk. The Breakfast Rotary will be raising funds for a number of projects both local (including scholarships, helping at Parkwood Elementary, back to school backpacks for students in the Shoreline Schools, to name just a few) and international (a new water system at a remote location in Uganda). One Rotary member has been going to this rural area of Uganda since 2006 where the first school started with 12 students and now has over 500 students.  To learn more about the Breakfast Rotary Club, see their website.

The music went on into the night at the 2012 event

2013 North City Jazz Walk
August 13 – 7 to 10pm

Come to St. Mark Catholic Church’s social hall and hear Danny Quintero and Critical Mass reprise the music from the fabulous “Sinatra-Basie at the Sands” two album release of 1966 that quickly became the standard by which all vocalists with big bands are measured. Why is this two-album set so revered? Sinatra’s impeccable phrasing and timing combined with the Basie band’s outstanding performance of the terrific orchestrations by all the best arrangers, including Seattle’s own Quincy Jones.

This is an opportunity for you to listen to Sinatra as performed by Danny Quintero, a young man quickly making a name for himself in the Northwest. Not only does Danny have a great voice and a marvelous stage presence, but a wonderful sense of the subtle nuances of Sinatra.

Rallie Jamero of Allstate Insurance is the sponsor of the "Sinatra-Basie at the Sands" at St. Mark's Catholic Church. Kim and Brad Lanceaster of Lancaster Law Firm are sponsoring "Hook Me Up" at the Frank Lumber delivery store.

Come and sit and enjoy the music of Hook Me Up, a favorite from last year. And, while you’re listening, enjoy a beer or glass of wine at the Rain City Rotary Beer and Wine Garden.

Check out all the artists and purchase your tickets online.

North City Jazz Walk - It's Magic

Sunday, July 14, 2013

NORTH CITY JAZZ WALK
15th NE between NE 175th and NE 188th
AUGUST 13th  -  7-10 PM

It’s Magic: The Songs of Mulligan and Baker
at the Bounty Coffee House

Shoreline’s own Doug Reid, along with long-time musical collaborator Alan Keith, will present the music of Gerry Mulligan and Chet Baker at the Bounty Coffee House.

Mulligan, known as a pioneer of the baritone saxophone, and trumpeter Chet Baker were both leaders of the “West Coast Jazz” movement in the late 1950s and 1960s. These innovators of counterpoint and melodic line transitioned jazz from the virtuosic chaos of bebop into what is commonly referred to today as the modern jazz era.

Together with the acclaimed rhythm section of Andy Roben, Phil Demaree, and Chris Monroe, Reid and Keith will re-create that wonderful sound for the Jazz Walk patrons.

Gary East, Attorney At Law, is the sponsor of It's Magic: the Songs of Mulligan and Baker at the Bounty Coffee House

2013 North City Jazz Walk on Tuesday, August 13

Sunday, June 23, 2013

With two outdoor venues, the street scene is vibrant at Jazz Walk

Make plans now to attend the North City Jazz Walk on Tuesday, August 13th. Music Director Keith McClelland, who is approached throughout the year by jazz artists, says this year’s lineup will delight jazz lovers and Jitterbug dancers who will hit the floor as soon as Solomon Douglas’ Swingtet gets going on the outdoor stage in front of Phoenix Art Restoration.

You won’t want to miss “Sinatra and Basie at the Sands” featuring crooner Danny Quintero backed by the Critical Mass big band, at the St. Mark Social Hall – just one of 10 bands at 10 venues.

Always a popular Jazz Walk tradition, the Shoreline Jazz Camp student and faculty bands showcase their talents on the SLFP Arts Council’s Showmobile.

“The Jazz Walk draws a larger crowd every year,” says McClelland, a Shoreline attorney who started the event with the North City Business Association in 2007.  “I make an effort to mix different styles and artists in with some of the favorites,” he explained.

This year, perennial favorite saxophonist Doug Reid teams with trumpeter Alan Keith for a salute to Gerry Mulligan and Chet Baker at The Bounty Café. Making his first appearance is pianist Barney McClure who, with guitarist Dan Sales, will keep fingers poppin’ at The Eagles Club.

Shoreline Water District Commissioner and Jazz Walk Volunteer Coordinator Charlotte Haines, arranged to add the district’s new conference room as the venue for sultry-voiced Stephanie Porter, backed by Dan O’Brien on bass and Steve Yusen on drums.

Casey MacGill’s intriguing tunes from the 20s-30s plays at the North City Bistro, while just across the street, the North City Lounge hosts the roiling sounds of blues man Jimmy Holden and vocalist/drummer Tim Haines.

Last year’s big hit, Hook Me Up, another great dance band, returns to the Frank Lumber Delivery Store stage next to the Rain City Rotary beer garden. For those who want to boogie, down a brew, or just tap a foot, this venue can’t be beat.

Although it is tiny, the 40-seat North City Theatre’s intimate setting is perfect for an evening “up close and personal” with the Northwest’s favorite jazz singer, Greta Matassa.

Street will be closed
Thanks to the City of Shoreline’s partnership, 15th Ave NE north of NE 175th St will be closed again this year making it possible to stroll with abandon from venue to venue and pick up a Jazz Bite along the way. More vendors will offer an array of food starting at 6:00pm.

Bracelets for entry
All indoor venues require a bracelet for entry. Bracelets will be on sale shortly. Participants will be able to purchase a bracelet through the website for $12 plus a handling fee.  If purchased through the web site, the purchaser will receive a receipt that will be exchanged for a bracelet the night of the Jazz Walk. Bracelets will be on sale for $12 at various local businesses over the next few weeks.   The locations will be published on this website in the couple of weeks. Bracelets will be for sale the night of the event for $15.

Over the next several weeks we will be bringing you more details about this popular community event.

North City Jazz Walk announces 2013 date

Wednesday, December 12, 2012

Families stroll the street during the 2012 Jazz Walk

Mark August 13th on your calendar for the 2013 North City Jazz Walk!
The North City Business Association (NCBA) announced the date at its November board meeting.

NCBA Board President Gary East declared, “The 2012 Jazz Walk was a rousing success in every way: People came to enjoy Jazz Bites, all music venues were packed to capacity, and more merchants than ever participated in the event.”

The Jazz Walk drew wonderful crowds of jazz lovers and families who strolled 15th Avenue NE on a gorgeous, balmy evening under a star-studded sky. The three outdoor venues made it possible for families with small children to enjoy music while the “club scene” in the indoor venues offered a more intimate atmosphere with food and beverages.

Artistic Director Keith McClelland is already working on the lineup for 2013. Says McClelland, “The North City Jazz Walk is now a staple for jazz artists in our region.  We can choose from a great selection of ensembles to offer a variety of high-quality performances. “

Once again, the City of Shoreline, the Journal Media Group, and the S/LFP Arts Council will partner with the Jazz Walk as will the loyal volunteer corps under the guidance of Charlotte Haines, Scott Keeny, and Ellen Sullivan. Last year’s director, Robin McClelland, is passing the torch.   She has summer plans that prevent her from taking the reins again, but says she will gladly train a new director to produce a successful event.

According to McClelland, “Everything is in order for someone to step in and assume the job.  It takes good organizational skills and a lot of time, but every minute is worth the effort.”

The NCBA will interview applicants in early 2013. If you are interested in submitting a request, contact Gary East.

North City Jazz Walk - the best party in town

Monday, August 20, 2012

Families fill the street, with kids on roller blades,
bicycles, in strollers, and on dad's shoulders.
By Diane Hettrick

On a warm evening after one of our rare, hot days, 15th NE in the heart of the North City business district was blocked off from 175th NE to 185 NE, and for almost four hours on August 14, 2012, became a huge street party for the North City Jazz Walk.

A full house for the Jazz Camp performance
Perhaps photographer Marc Weinberg said it best, "The night was about fun, family and enjoying the summer evening together.  Something we need to celebrate given the ongoing news of drought, fires, shootings, political clashes and community violence."

Or maybe it was our news partner Parent Map that got it right when they advised their readers that this was a wonderful, free family event.

Faculty and students from Jazz Camp
The Jazz aficionados had something to say, too, "An entire Jazz Festival in one evening, for the price of less than one ticket to a concert."

It really was two parties in one - the street festival and the jazz clubs. On the street, families walked up and down with babies in strollers and backpacks and dogs on leashes. Three stages were outdoors and open to all to sit and listen, dance, or just stroll by. There was even an outdoor beer garden run by a Rotary group, next to an outdoor stage.

Kids on bicycles rode through the crowd, as did the Shoreline police bicycle patrol. Spontaneous dancing broke out. There were quick dance lessons by the Phoenix Restoration site.

There was food everywhere. Restaurants located on the route moved outside to sell "jazz bites" - small portions at reduced prices. The pizza place sold whole pizzas and stayed open late.

In the "clubs" jazz groups played and patrons could show their bracelets to go in, sit down and buy a drink while they listened. These venues became even more important as the evening went on and the temperature dropped.

Eagle's Lodge becomes a jazz club for the night
The "clubs" were businesses along the street that transformed themselves for the evening. The only place that normally has jazz acts and alcohol is the North City Bistro. The others were jazz for the night - the local catholic church, the theatre, the Eagle's lodge.

It was a wonderful, magical evening. If you were there, you know what I mean. If you weren't - well, you'll get another chance next year.

North City Jazz Walk brings fresh new talent to the 2012 line up

Hook Me Up
By Robin McClelland

Jazz Walk, Tuesday, August 14, 2012, The Jazz Walk is staged on 15th NE in North City, between NE 175th and NE 180th. Advanced tickets for $12 are on sale now. Capacity at indoor venues is limited so buy tickets early at designated locations or online. Tickets will be available at the event for $15. Parking is plentiful and free. Here is a map of the venues, artist profiles, parking, and Jazz Bite offerings.

When Tracey Hooker brings his variety band with a jazz flavor to the North City Jazz Walk on Tuesday, August 14th, folks can expect a treat.  Says Hooker, “I like to take the audience on an emotional journey. With Hook Me Up, you never know what we are going to do next.” This was true last year at Celebrate Shoreline when Keith McClelland, listening in the front row, decided immediately to add Hook Me Up to the 2012 Jazz Walk line up.

With its mix of jazz and pop, Hook Me Up gives familiar themes a fresh treatment.  The band will play outdoors in front of the Frank Lumber Delivery Store under the Integrity Surety sponsor banner. You can pull up a chair for free or with your entry bracelet, have a seat in the Rain City Rotary Club Beer and Wine Garden to enjoy new sounds.

Band leader Tracey Hooker hails from Olympia where he settled after 22 years in the US Navy.  He got “hooked” on music when his high school band performed all over Florida. “I knew I wanted to play the trumpet for a living at an early age and have had the pleasure to travel the world as a musician.”

For the past 14 years Tracey has traversed the I-5 corridor and beyond. In addition to the annual Crystal Mountain Wine Festival, the band performed 14 times in July and is booked solid in August.

When not on the road, Tracey teaches music at two community colleges and gives private lessons in Olympia.

The Casey MacGill Group

Casey MacGill, Matt Weiner, and JoJo Mascorella form the Casey MacGill Group playing at Brown’s Coffee Shop under the Shoreline Breakfast Rotary sponsor banner. JoJo is new to the group but far from new to music. He was raised in a musical family – his father Frank plays the trombone and repairs instruments at Kennelly Keys. JoJo also plays in the familiar group Hot Club Sandwich. Bassist Matt Weiner plays with Wayne Horowitz and was in the Flying Neutrinos in New York back in the 1990s.

To the drums and bass, Casey adds his own special touch with piano, ukulele, and the coronet. But the instrumentation is just part of the repertoire.

Casey, a long-time vocal chart arranger, says “Each voice brings a personal and unique quality to a song. I love to write compositions that expand the sound of a trio.”  Adds Casey, “That’s a reason I am really excited to have JoJo join the group.  He is a fantastic scat singer.”

Folk music first inspired Casey MacGill before he moved on to jazz, rock, and the blues. “After some years, I returned to jazz and found my passion. Older jazz resonates with me; I’ve concentrated on it for over 30 years.” MacGill credits Ahmad Jamal for influencing the way he plays the piano. As for his singing, Casey claims Nat King Cole as his all-time idol.

Advanced tickets for the Jazz Walk may be purchased for $12 online or at several locations in Shoreline: Sky Nursery, Prosser Music, Shoreline Lake Forest Park Senior Center and these North City businesses: North City Bistro, Laughing Ladies Café, North City Eagles Aerie, Golden Bow and Flowers, and Dr. Larrance Commons. Tickets on the night of the event are $15. Parking is free. For more information and to purchase tickets, visit or call 206-399-0963.

The North City Jazz Walk is produced by the North City Business Association in partnership with the City of Shoreline, The Journal Media Group, the Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Arts Council, American Solutions, and Cleanscapes.  The Jazz Walk is grateful to the generous 2012 stage sponsors:  Dr. Tim Norton, DC; Phoenix Art Restoration; Chuck Cady/Ann Babb-Nordling; Ben Kinney and Keller Williams Realty; the Law Office of Keith McClelland, Edward Jones-Stephanie Santeford; Integrity Surety, LLC; the Shoreline Breakfast Rotary, and the S/LFP Arts Council.

Jazz pianist Bill Anschell to perform at North City Jazz Walk

Monday, August 6, 2012

Bill Anschell will perform at Jazz Walk
The North City Jazz Walk, August 14, welcomes the Bill Anschell Trio to 2012 line up of great jazz artists. The trio – Bill on piano, Chris Symer on bass, and Jose Martinez on drums— will perform at North City Bistro under the Chuck Cady/Ann Babb-Nordling sponsor banner.

A Seattle native, Bill Anschell returned to his roots in the Northwest after 25 years away. During that time he earned his music degree from Wesleyan University in Connecticut, established himself as a composer, and performer. He was drawn to Atlanta in 1989 to serve as the Jazz Coordinator for the Southern Arts Federation (SAF), the regional arts agency of the South. In that capacity he launched high-profile programs, published a how-to book on grant writing, and created “JazzSouth”, in internationally syndicated radio show.

“I always knew I would move back home,” said Bill, “and once my son became old enough for school, we began to look around. Combining the facts that my brothers live here, housing was affordable, and the schools have a great reputation, Shoreline was our preferred choice.”

Bill and his family have lived in the Northridge neighborhood since 2002. His son Sam attends Shorewood High School. According to his dad, Sam is a darn good saxophonist.

Jazz Walk listeners will delight in the repertoire performed by the Bill Anschell Trio.  Bill’s influences span a wide range of pianists and he is drawn to a lot of different styles.  Says Bill, “I don’t listen just to jazz; I get many of my ideas from other forms of music including that of other cultures.”

In 2011 Bill Anschell received Golden Ear Awards for the “Northwest Jazz Instrumentalist of the Year,” and the “Northwest Jazz Recording of the Year”.  Golden Ear Awards are administered by Earshot Jazz based on open voting by the Seattle jazz community.

The North City Jazz Walk is on Tuesday, August 14. Music begins at 7pm; Jazz Bites are available when the street closes at 6pm. Tickets may be purchased in advance online and at designated locations in Shoreline. Visit the website for complete details.

Malcolm Harris, a member of the band, says he's in charge of "whipping" the large group together to practice each week and getting them to performances. Band members are not professional musicians, but Harris said that after Keith McClelland took over directing the band it became tighter and more professional. Mainly they get together because they love to play jazz.

Robin and Keith McClelland are part of the organizing committee for the North City Jazz Walk.
