Seattle Kraken team up with Washington Lottery for Kraken-branded Scratch ticket

Wednesday, October 6, 2021

Inaugural season Kraken-branded Scratch ticket gives players an opportunity to win up to $50,000 instantly; non-winning tickets can be mailed in for three second-chance drawings

The new ticket was available starting Monday, October 4, 2021 with more than $6 million in total prizes, instant cash prizes of up to $50,000, and the ability to win up to 15 times on a single ticket.
“We’re honored to partner with the Seattle Kraken and celebrate such a momentous occasion for hockey fans across Washington,” said Marcus Glasper, director of Washington’s Lottery.
“We enjoy finding new ways to bring excitement to our fans, so that every day feels like it’s the first time we’re seeing the Kraken out on the ice.”

To play Seattle Kraken Scratch, players match any of the “your numbers” shown on their ticket to any of the “winning numbers” printed on the ticket and then win the prize shown for that number.

If they reveal a puck symbol, they win that prize instantly.

A sticks symbol doubles the prize shown, and a goal symbol wins the player $50 instantly.

In addition to the instant cash prizes, the Seattle Kraken Scratch game features three second-chance mail-in drawings where players can win various prizes, including a VIP Kraken match day experience, inaugural season replica Seattle Kraken jerseys, or a $100 Kraken team store gift card.

The first drawing will be held November 17, 2021 and entries for it must be received by November 13, 2021.

The second drawing will be held January 12, 2022 and entries for it must be received by January 8, 2022.

The third and final drawing will be held February 23, 2022, and entries for it must be received by February 19, 2022. Details on how to enter and all terms and conditions for the second chance drawings are printed on the back of each Seattle Kraken Scratch ticket.

“We’re excited to partner with Washington’s Lottery to provide fans with fun and exciting ways to engage with the Seattle Kraken during this historic inaugural season,” says Ryan Brach, SVP of global partnerships at Oak View Group.
“We can’t wait to see everyone across Washington test their luck for a chance to be a part of these unique Kraken experiences and giveaways.”

Rod Dembowski: Light link rail station opens October 2 at Northgate; affordable housing by station

Sunday, September 26, 2021

Site of affordable housing adjacent to Northgate Station

On the west side of District 1, there have been many exciting developments at Northgate. As you may know on October 2nd the Link light rail station at Northgate will open. Riders will now be able to get from Northgate to downtown Seattle in 14 (traffic-free) minutes.

As part of the County’s effort to build housing at or near transit hubs, just this week the County announced a proposed lease agreement to build 232 new affordable housing units adjacent to the light rail station.

All units will be affordable to households earning 60 percent or less of the area median income in 2021, or $69,400 for a family of four. The development will provide a mix of unit sizes including at least 52 two- or three-bedroom units.

Additionally, the site will have childcare to help support working families. My staff worked closely with Metro to bring this project online, and more information can be found here.

These exciting developments at Northgate are in addition to the Seattle Kraken opening their Kraken Community Iceplex earlier this month. The Iceplex is housed at the former Northgate Mall, and includes three NHL-sized ice rinks. The beautiful new facility will host youth and amateur hockey for the public.

Meeting ID: 225 797 7384

Wednesday, July 21, 2021 7:30am

Speaker: Mari Horita, Executive Director, One Roof Foundation

The Seattle Kraken is the NHL’s 32nd franchise, the first professional hockey team in Seattle since the Seattle Totems finished their 1974-75 season in the then-pro-Western Hockey League.

The Kraken will play at Climate Pledge Arena, which is undergoing a transformation to develop the arena originally constructed for the 1962 Seattle World’s Fair (saving the landmark roof) into a state-of-the-art facility, which will bring the best of live sport, music, and entertainment to the city.

The Seattle Kraken and Climate Pledge Arena are joining forces to create One Roof Foundation, which will serve as the philanthropic arm of both organizations. The foundation will be specific about how to generate social change in a trio of ‘primary impact’ areas: youth homelessness, access and opportunities in youth hockey and environmental justice.

Olympian and Shoreline native to act as NWHL to Seattle spokesperson

Monday, May 13, 2019

Shoreline native and U.S. women’s hockey Olympian bronze medalist from the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turino, Italy, Kelly Stephens-Tysland, is acting as the National Women’s Hockey League (NWHL) to Seattle spokesperson -- a campaign to bring professional women’s hockey to Seattle.

Kelly grew up in Shoreline, attending Echo Lake Elementary, Einstein Middle, and Shorewood High School (9th and 12th grades).

As a child her first strides on the ice were at Highland Ice Arena in Shoreline where she participated in Learn to Skate and Beginner hockey classes.

As she became more passionate about the game of hockey Kelly spent hours playing at Olympic View Ice Arena in Mountlake Terrace for the Seattle Junior Hockey Association until she moved away at the age of fourteen to follow her dream to train and play hockey at the highest level.

Kelly played for the University of Minnesota women's ice hockey team from 2001 to 2005, earning back-to-back National Collegiate Women’s Ice Hockey titles in 2004 and 2005. In 2004 Kelly was selected to the All-Tournament Team honors as she scored five points in the Frozen Four, and in 2005 the team tallied a near-perfect record of 36-2-2 and were ranked as the top team in the nation for the entire campaign.

She is listed on the team’s Top 10 Career Stats Record Board for: all-time points, goals, assists, as well as points per game, goals per game, power-play goals, shorthanded goals, game-winning goals, and penalty minutes.

During Kelly’s pre-Olympic campaign she would return home to Shoreline from time-to-time to visit family and Highland Ice Arena would provide her with ice so she could continue to train.

Kelly scored the game-winning goal against Sweden for a Bronze medal in the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turino, Italy.

After the 2006 Olympics she moved back to Washington State and started Experience Momentum with her husband Shanon, a fitness training company with locations in Lynnwood and Fremont.

Kelly joins the NWHL to Seattle campaign to help unite and amplify the community's interest in bringing a women's professional hockey team to Seattle. NWHL to Seattle will support grassroots efforts, connect segments of the movement, and rally the people of the Pacific Northwest around the shared goal.

The organization also plans to increase awareness and enthusiasm for the game by building relationships with fans and welcoming those new to the sport.

Interest in women’s hockey is at its highest mark in history, both among players and fans.

According to spokesperson Kelly Stephen Tysland, “Whether you see a game in person, online, or on TV, women’s professional hockey provides exciting, fast-paced entertainment, featuring some of the best players in the world.”

Tysland continues, "Followers of women’s hockey in the United States are on the rise thanks to the success of Team USA at the last Winter Olympics, the excitement surrounding women’s collegiate and professional hockey, the exhilaration from female Olympic and professional players participating in the NHL All-Star Game, and now from the World Championships in Finland.
"These factors, plus the frenzy that the new NHL men’s team is bringing to our city, makes it the perfect time for women's professional hockey to expand into Seattle."

Kelly Stephens-TyslandPhoto courtesy Experience Momentum
NWHL to Seattle points to a tremendous opportunity for synergy with the NHL Seattle team, which will benefit both teams.

Tysland explains, "We believe Seattle can become a hub for training hockey players— both women and men.
"The professional players will serve as role models for up-and-coming players and the new world-class facilities will provide more access and opportunity to develop future college, professional, and Olympic athletes. '
"Fostering a hockey hub in Seattle will keep talent in the Pacific Northwest and enable players to stay in the area to continue their professional careers, both on and off the ice."

A local women’s professional hockey team will inspire a new generation of Seattleites to watch and perhaps even play the sport. Whether at the recreational or elite level, sports teach teamwork, goal-setting and the pursuit of excellence in performance and achievement-oriented behaviors— critical skills necessary for success in the workplace.

Sports also build a lifestyle for more productive, healthy, and happy lives. The Women’s Sports Foundation also notes the direct positive effect on girls: Compared with those who do not play sports, girls participating in sports are more likely to

  • Earn better grades in and graduate from school,
  • Demonstrate higher self-confidence and less depression, and
  • Maintain better body images and psychological states of well-being.

Tysland goes on to say, "Our ultimate goal is to establish a women’s professional hockey team in Seattle with a strong ownership group and media coverage in place.
"As we work toward that objective, we’re beginning by producing NWHL to Seattle gear that has a dual purpose— helping fans show their support of the campaign while also providing funding for promotional activities.
"Another intermediate step will be working to bring/host an NWHL All-Star game to the city prior to the NWHL Seattle’s inaugural season.”

NWHL to Seattle
The NWHL to Seattle organization plans to facilitate team ownership conversations with the NWHL in the coming months.

With a strong ownership group, financial backing, and consistent local media coverage, a women’s professional hockey team can be successful in Seattle, both on and off the ice.

There is strong support of women’s professional sports in the Seattle area; coupled with the fanatic hockey fans in the region, it is a great combination for success.

Fans can purchase NWHL to Seattle gear, with all proceeds going toward events and marketing of the campaign, find out how to get involved HERE and and how to join the @NWHLtoSeattle movement on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

Shoreline resident honored by American Hockey Coaches Association

Saturday, May 12, 2018

Zoë Harris receives the Joe Burke award
from Joe Bertagna of the AHCA
Zoë Harris of Shoreline was recently honored with the 2018 Joe Burke award, given annually by American Hockey Coaches Association (AHCA) to the person who has given outstanding contribution, support, and dedication to women's ice hockey.

At the awards ceremony held in Naples, FL Harris says, “It truly is an honor to receive this award and I accept it on behalf of the hundreds of volunteers that help grow the game for female players.”

For the last 30 years Zoë has been working to grow female hockey across the country as a player, coach, and administrator. A native of Barrington, Rhode Island, Harris moved to Seattle, Washington 25 years ago and in 1995 began coaching girls' hockey with Cindy Dayley.

Zoë Harris and Cindy Dayley were the
first women to coach men's collegiate
ice hockey - at the UW
They formed the first girls' elite travel AAA rep team in Seattle with the mission of skill development, building strength of character, and exposure to collegiate coaches.

By the second year, the team went undefeated 19-0 and won the Canadian Lower Mainland Female Hockey League Championship title -- the first US team to ever win the title. They also helped several players secure positions on collegiate NCAA teams for the first time in the area.

In 1996 the pair joined together with a Canadian coach to form the 49th Parallel Program -- camps, clinics, and teams to enhance elite level female players' skills by holding ice sessions and workshops that mentored players in the college placement process, goal setting, visualization, and thinking in ways to create success.

Players were showcased to collegiate scouts for more exposure to the talent in the Northwest of the US and Southwest Canada. Several players earned immediate scholarships to play NCAA D1.

In the fall of 1998, the female duo was hired to coach the men's ice hockey team at the University of Washington (UW), where Harris served as assistant coach. The team then joined in the PAC8 Conference in the American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) Men's Division 2 bracket.

In the 6-year tenure (1998-2004) the coaching pair earned a win-loss record of 104-42-1, breaking all team records. Their coaching paraphernalia is at the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto for being the first women to coach men's collegiate ice hockey.

Zoë Harris
In 1999, while she was coaching the UW Huskies, Harris noted the growth of women's collegiate hockey through the numerous non-varsity "club" teams.

She envisioned bringing all the existing women's teams together under the ACHA banner alongside the well-established ACHA D1, D2, and D3 men's teams, with the goal to grow the sport throughout the country and allow them to vie for a national championship and individual awards.

She proposed the development of a Women's Division within the ACHA, and convinced the ACHA to support this effort on April 29, 2000.

On Saturday October 14, 2000 with a game between the University of Michigan and the University of Buffalo, the first-ever national division for ACHA women started with 12 teams. Five months later, the first-ever Women's National Championship took place.

Harris grew the ACHA Women's division by 30% within four years and since it has expanded into two divisions with over 30 teams in each division.

The ACHA Women's Division later named the annual Player of The Year award in her honor (for both Women's Division 1 and Division 2), for which she presents a commemorative watch annually. In 2014, she was entered into the ACHA Hall of Fame with the Builder Award.

In 2012 Harris started coaching for the Western Washington Female Hockey Association (WWFHA) and the Washington Wild in Shoreline, WA – the only girls' hockey association in Washington State. She joined the Board of Directors and previously served as the vice president and treasurer, while volunteering to manage day-to-day operations.

The program operates out of Highland Ice Arena at 18005 Aurora Ave N.

In 2014 Harris left the high tech sector to work full-time for the organization where she serves as the Executive Director of Operations with the goal of growing the game for girls in Washington State.

In the last three years, her goal was to help empower the student-athletes on and off the ice and she spearheaded such programs as the Pro-Staff program, which connected leaders in the community with the teams to mentor the student-athletes in the college admissions process, the college hockey process, sports nutrition, well-body image counseling, sports psychology, student counseling and more.

Zoë also implemented the first Girls' Try Hockey for Free events and a first Girls’ Learn to Play beginner program in the state, which resulted in a 133% increase in membership, including the development of a first-ever all-girls league in Washington State.

Joe Burke Award 2018
Harris is passionate about the sport of ice hockey, managing sports organizations, and teaching young people how to make the most of their experiences both on and off the ice.

She fully believes that the ice hockey empowers girls so they may reach their goals on and off the ice, and better serve their communities.

The Joe Burke Award was established in 1994 to honor those individuals who have shown great support and dedication to Girls/Women's hockey.
