United Way of King County, DoorDash, community partners celebrate milestone: 100,000 food deliveries completed

Tuesday, May 18, 2021

DoorDash food pantry in south King county

This week, United Way of King County celebrated 100,000 deliveries of food as they combat food insecurity across the region in partnership with DoorDash and its social impact initiative, Project DASH.

Project DASH utilizes DoorDash’s fulfillment platform, DoorDash Drive, to enable United Way and other nonprofits to reach and serve clients through last-mile delivery -- or getting the product to clients in that last leg of the journey.

This 100,000-delivery milestone was made possible by thousands of DoorDash delivery drivers, known as Dashers, as well as volunteers and AmeriCorps members.

The program is one of United Way’s valuable assets to combat food insecurity in our region, which has increased significantly during the pandemic.

Through this program, more than 2.5 million pounds of food pantry items and groceries have been delivered in all of King County to 4,100 households, ensuring that thousands of people per week have access to culturally appropriate and nutritious food.

More than 70% of those served are people of color, who have been disproportionately affected by the pandemic.

Locally, the program partners closely with North Helpline Food Bank and Hopelink.

DoorDash launched Project DASH nationwide in 2018 and, since then, it has grown from a few deliveries a week to over 400,000 deliveries of items, including food, mental health kits, diapers and school supplies in 2020 alone.

Even as the pandemic begins to recede, the need for reliable, nutritious food available to individuals and families who are food insecure will still remain in King County.

To celebrate the 100,000 deliveries, which is the highest in the nation, and to further combat food insecurity, DoorDash is donating $20,000 in DoorDash gift cards through its Community Credits program to United Way of King County.

King County Coordinated Vaccine Transportation Helpline

Friday, May 7, 2021

Sound Generations is a partner,
providing van transportation
Hopelink has launched the Coordinated Vaccine Transportation Helpline (425-943-6706) as a one-stop-shop for finding and securing transportation to and from vaccination sites in and around King County.

For many communities across King County, transportation is a constant barrier to getting to their doctor’s appointments, grocery stores and social gatherings. This barrier was made even more complex by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Individuals – especially older adults, people with disabilities, people with limited English and members of the BIPOC community – faced some of the most significant barriers. As the COVID-19 vaccine began to roll out in January, it was clear that transportation continued to be an obstacle. Many of the populations most in need of the vaccine were unable to safely and reliably get to their vaccine appointment.

This need prompted Hopelink to think creatively on how to be part of the solution. In addition to launching the King County COVID Vaccine Mobility Task Force, Hopelink created the Coordinated Vaccine Transportation Helpline.

This Helpline is a one-stop-shop for finding and securing transportation support to and from vaccine appointments in and around King County. Individuals, caregivers, caseworkers, medical professionals, vaccine schedulers and others can receive individualized support for themselves or the rider they are helping through either an online intake form or by calling 425-943-6706 (press 5 for language assistance).

There is no eligibility criteria, and the ride is free in most circumstances.

This program aims to support communities that are the most vulnerable and need access to the vaccine sites; this includes BIPOC communities, seniors, immigrants, refugees and individuals with disabilities.

“We want to ensure transportation is not the barrier to accessing the vaccine in our community,” says Staci Sahoo, Director of Mobility Management at Hopelink.

The Helpline was launched in late February and is staffed by Hopelink team members who are bilingual in English/Spanish, and staff also have access to interpretation services at the time of the call. The Helpline reservation line is open Monday through Friday, from 8:30am to 4pm. You can also leave a voicemail and get a callback.

The success of this Helpline is because of the incredible partnerships that were created. This includes Sound Generations (Hyde Shuttle and Volunteer Driver Program), Catholic Community Services of Western Washington (King County Volunteer Services), King County Metro (Access, Community Van, Crossroads Connect, Via to Transit), Snoqualmie Valley Transportation, Northshore Senior Center, Puget Sound Educational Service District, Hopelink’s Non-Emergency Medical Transportation, Lyft, and Uber. These partners have stepped up to provide transportation to vaccine appointments and provided them at no cost.

Hopelink is proud to partner with Public Health – Seattle and King County and many other organizations across King County to provide transportation for this critical resource. The Helpline will continue to support the community as long as there is a need, thanks to generous grant partners, including Washington State Department of Transportation and All in WA’s Vaccine Equity Initiative.

In 2020 Hopelink served nearly 65,000 people in King and Snohomish Counties. Services are designed to help individuals and families find stability in crisis by meeting basic needs for food, shelter, heat and transportation.

Tuesday, December 15, 2020

Your heart will be warmed by this news! Shannon McMaster and Stacy Cotton (and Stacy's mother Marti who made masks for the 75 volunteers) are educators and super organizers who have been long time supporters of and volunteers for the Shoreline PTSA Holiday Basket program.

They, with the help of Shoreline PTA Council co-presidents Amy Reed and Heather Segars, organized envelopes with gift cards and pick-up times for nearly 700 Shoreline Schools families.

On December 12, 2020 their newly designed Covid Safe Holiday Basket event took place for families who have children enrolled in the Shoreline School District and could use a little extra help this Holiday Season.

Each family received gift and grocery cards in a drive through event at the Shoreline Center.

Nearly 700 families and several thousand children (upwards of 1500) received gift cards for gifts and a $100 card for groceries.

This super organized event handed out over $110,000 in gift cards including $50,000 in grocery vouchers from the city of Shoreline, donations from Shoreline and Lake Forest Park Rotaries, Alpha Delta, Hopelink, the Shoreline Fire Department, Dale Turner YMCA and numerous community individuals.

Special thanks to Shannon and Stacy, volunteers and contributors who made the holidays a little brighter for many!

Students thank the community for 7,000 pounds of food for Hopelink

Friday, November 6, 2020

7,000 pounds of food for Hopelink

On October 31, 2020 students from both Shorecrest and Shorewood combined to host a community food drive to benefit the Shoreline Hopelink Food Bank.

The students made it a friendly competition between the schools and turned out in force to both donate and accept donations at the drive-thru event at the Shoreline Center.

Following is their letter thanking the community for the enormous success of the project.

Dear Beloved Members of the Shoreline Community,

Thank you for your generous donations to the Shorewood / Shorecrest October Food Drive. We were able to collect over 7,000 pounds of food items and donate them to HOPELINK. All this would not have been possible without the caring hearts of this community.

At a time when the sharing of kindness is especially in need, we cannot express enough how much we appreciate your help and support during this difficult time. Through these words, we hope that our gratefulness and thankfulness delivers well to the genuine hearts of the Shoreline community, as well as our wishes for the health and well-being of all.

Once again, thank you.

With warm regards,
Shorewood and Shorecrest High School

Second from right, Otis, the mascot for the Shorecrest Scots, joins with the Thunderbird mascot from Shorewood and a few friends at the drive-thru food drive at the Shoreline Center which collected 7,000 pounds of food for the Shoreline Hopelink food drive.

Week 5 of the 4-Corners fund raiser for Hopelink: sharing our good fortune with those that need help

Wednesday, November 4, 2020

Wow, we have been swept off our feet with the kindness and generosity of our neighbors.

People have stepped up with big hearted, unstinting donations to the 4-Corners fund raiser for Hopelink.
During the month of October we have received more than $12,000 dollars.

This is more than double the goal we set.

http://fundraise.hope-link.org/4Corners

This is a substantial amount to help distressed families in Shoreline. We are so proud to live here with such generous people.

There is still much need however, and we have decided to continue our fund drive through the holidays.

Hopelink’s shelves will need a lot more to see people through the dark months of winter and to help with holiday meals. Consider giving a small amount each month for a few months. It is a safe secure way to share our good fortune with those that need help now.

http://fundraise.hope-link.org/4Corners

This is a worthwhile endeavor and you can be part of it. Donate something, whatever you can, today.

Two opportunities to donate food to Hopelink on Saturday

Friday, October 30, 2020

Hopelink is committed to ensuring access to food for our most vulnerable neighbors during the COVID-19 crisis. Many who have never before needed to ask for help are turning to us for support; facing fear and uncertainty, and suddenly at risk of losing stability. Demand for food continues to increase.

While Hopelink centers have been closed to the public, we have continued to provide food to everyone who needs it; transitioning from grocery store-style shopping to pre-packed boxes. To ensure that all food provided is as safe as possible, we made the decision in early March to temporarily suspend food donations and instead purchase all food directly from vendors.

As previously reported, Shorecrest / Shorewood students will be accepting donations on Saturday at the Shoreline Center, 18560 1st Ave NE from 11am to 2pm.

Hopelink will also hold a 4-hour drive-through food drive at Shoreline Hopelink (17837 Aurora Ave N behind Ronald Methodist Church) on Saturday, October 31, 2020 from 10am to 2pm..

On that day only, community members are invited to drive through and drop off some of the same foods that are currently being packed into boxes for distribution.

Help us ensure that we will have enough food for the coming winter.

Hopelink is currently packing and distributing hundreds of boxes of food every day. Meeting that demand requires that we provide the same shelf-stable foods to everyone.

For that reason, we are able to accept only the following:

• Tuna
• Mac and cheese
• Peanut butter
• Chili/stew
• Canned fruit
• Instant oatmeal/cereal

For questions or more information on the 4-hour food drive: drives@hopelink.org

Thank you for thinking of your community, and we hope to see you this Saturday!

Help 4-Corners fill the food shelves at Hopelink

Friday, October 9, 2020

4-Corners.org continues its fund raising drive to fill Hopelink’s shelves.

The need is great.

Many are out of work and the children need good nutrition to help them focus on their new experience of online school.

Hopelink gets more benefit from dollars than it does from food donations. They can buy exactly what they need and there is no waste. They can buy in bulk and receive discounts that we cannot. There is no need for a list of items needed.

Cash works and this is a safe, no contact way for you to help. Please join us in this effort to fill Hopelink’s shelves and defeat hunger.

Please, click the link and give today!

Hopelink offering free GED classes online for local students

Monday, September 28, 2020

In response to COVID-19, Hopelink is now offering free GED classes online for students who live in or near our service area. Students who need to be at home can still get help earning their GED or high school diploma, a credential which will help them get a better job, prepare for college, or fulfill their personal goals.

Celia, one of our Hopelink students, had been trying to get her GED for twenty years, but her work and family responsibilities always took precedence. Finally this year, she has been able to make it work!
Every morning, she helps her elementary-aged kids with school and activities, and in the afternoon, her older children watch the little ones so she can study. As of today, she has passed three of her four GED tests, including math! “I tell my friends, if I can do it with seven kids at home, then you can, too!”

For more information, please send an email to Debbie Margolis at dmargolis@hopelink.org or call her at 425-457-9685.

Local Shorecrest high school student rallies community to raise $235 and 3,125 pounds of food for Hopelink

Wednesday, May 27, 2020

Sorted and boxed for delivery to Hopelink's Kirkland distribution center

Concerned about the rising number of local families struggling to put food on the table, Ian Prosser, a sophomore at Shorecrest High School and 17-year resident of Shoreline, decided he should step up.

“I just felt compelled. Food insecurity may seem like an invisible problem to a lot of people, but it’s not. I don’t have to look too far or too close to see my school friends and neighbors are hurting right now,” said Prosser.
Volunteers unload the bags of donated food

As the coronavirus slows business and thousands of Seattle workers lose jobs, emergency support services are being stretched thin.

Seeing an opportunity to help, Prosser organized a five-hour rally on May 16, 2020 where local residents could drop off food donations at the Shoreline School District’s office parking lot and save a trip to Hopelink’s distribution center in Kirkland.

The event raised $235 and 3,125 pounds of food to support the community’s housing insecure and low-income families.

Bruce, Julia, Ian, and Michael Prosser

He recruited his mother, Julia Prosser, to help coordinate the event.

“I am amazed at the amount of support we received,” said Mrs. Prosser. “Our high school students were up and ready to go at 7:00am on a Saturday. Can’t say that normally happens in my household!”

PTA Council co-president, Silje Sodal, played a key role securing the location and providing a contact list of community groups willing to help. Sodal also served as the primary liaison between the food drive committee and the school district.

Volunteers pose for a group shot

Special thanks go to the more than 35 volunteers from the Shoreline PTA Council, Shoreline School District, Shoreline Rotary, Shoreline Community Church and students from Shorecrest, Shorewood, and Sammamish high schools.

“I’m so thankful to everyone who volunteered and donated,” added Prosser. “It just goes to show anyone can make a difference if they want.”

Hopelink offers free GED and high school diploma program online

Wednesday, April 29, 2020

Hopelink is helping students earn their GEDs and high school diplomas during this COVID stay-at-home period. We now have a few openings in this fine program!

Our GED and High School+ Program is a good fit for those who have:
  • Interest and willingness to study at home
  • Time to meet with a teacher and to attend Zoom classes
  • A phone or computer with internet access
Hopelink can offer:
  • Individualized support and tutoring
  • Learning materials and tools (both physical and online)
  • A community of learners
This is how we’re doing things this spring and summer:

GED students work on math every day, following a learning plan designed just for them. Twice each week, students meet with a Hopelink tutor using FaceTime, Google Hangouts, Zoom, or a phone call. The meeting is a chance to ask questions, get pointers and learn new concepts.

GED students gather for a Zoom class twice weekly (Tuesday and Thursdays, 4:00-5:30). In class, students discuss key information and learn skills that help them in science (biology, physics, chemistry) and social studies (U.S. government and history).

Some students would rather earn a high school diploma than take the GED tests. These people may join the High School Plus (HS+) program where they will complete independent projects to earn high school credit.

Interested students can contact Debbie Margolis at DMargolis@hopelink.org.

For more information, such as eligibility criteria, visit the website
