4 Corners Food Drive for Hopelink was a huge success

Monday, October 14, 2019

Volunteers collect food from shoppers
at the Richmond Beach QFC
The 6th Annual 4 Corners Food Drive for Hopelink, held Saturday, October 5, at the Richmond Beach QFC, was a huge success!

1540 pounds of food were collected, plus $125 in cash donations. That is record breaking - beating last year’s donations by 237 pounds.

According to a volunteer at Hopelink's food bank, this is a real bonus.

She said, “I know the food bank clients at Hopelink will truly benefit and appreciate the options all the donations will afford them.
"Most of us find it hard to imagine how difficult it is to do without things we take for granted. Things like mayonnaise, or taco seasoning, breakfast cereal or milk.
"Some of these are typically available at the food bank, but many of the things that can turn essential ingredients into tasty meals are not.
"Donations can often fill a special need. Like the guy who loves clam chowder and is so glad to see it on the shelves, or the diabetics finding cereal that's not coated in sugar.
"They all help make the lives of the clients richer. I'm so happy that our neighbors have been generous.”

As shoppers brought food, it was loaded in crates
for transportation to Hopelink
Thanks to Richmond Beach QFC for welcoming us at their doors and to the generous neighbors who so freely share their assets.

Thanks to the following individuals who stood outside in the cold for two hours greeting people and packing donations.
  • From Hillwood: Charlene Kaiser, Gretchen Brookes, Ann Erickson and Boni Biery
  • From Innis Arden: Victoria O’Classen, Dom Dellino and Marcie Bloom
  • From Richmond Beach: David Davis, Jenni Gallagher and her kids
  • From Richmond Highlands: Bill Becroft, Juliet Lovejoy and daughter Penelope, Pete Gerhard and Curt Pearce.

This is what 4-corners.org is all about, enhancing and strengthening our communities.

Ronald Commons Community Block Party attracts 400 guests for a day of fun

A Rotarian checks in with the Easy Company Band

Photos by Steven H. Robinson

If you were close to Shoreline town center on Saturday and wondering where the amazing live music was coming from, it was the third annual Ronald Commons Community Block Party!

In addition to the upbeat, energetic tunes from the Easy Company Band, approximately 400 guests enjoyed hot dogs, fresh fruit, cotton candy, sno-cones and more.

The kids enjoyed the bouncy house

Kids and adults were treated to carnival games, activities, swag and information from local service providers. When they weren’t slurping Italian sodas or munching on popcorn, children kept lining up for the bounce house, face painting by staff from Echo Tattoo and an opportunity to climb aboard the big rig with the Shoreline Fire Department.

Lollipop-a-palooza - guess the number of lollipops
in the jar and the closest number wins a prize.
Prizes were awarded hourly.

Dozens of door prize winners left with gift cards to local restaurants and businesses, luxury hair products, toys and more. The League of Women Voters signed up several new voters. A resident of Ronald Commons passed out samples of food offered by her new Filipino catering business. Several of our elected officials stopped by to visit with neighbors and enjoy the fun.

Dale Turner Y had a booth, along with
two dozen other service agencies

Twenty-four community partners, including service agencies, community organizations, local businesses and churches, hosted booths at the event, providing information about their programs and/or fun activities for kids and adults.

Who better to do face painting than a tattoo artist?

Another twenty-two businesses, faith communities and organizations provided help with the event. This amazing outpouring of support and enthusiasm for the block party by the community made it possible to offer this event at no cost to participants.

Everything, yes everything, was free.

LFP Rotary was there, cooking hot dogs

Many thanks to all who helped make this event a success, including the hosts: Ronald United Methodist Church, Hopelink and Compass Housing Alliance. The event is a celebration of the unique partnership that continues to be a model for other faith communities and service providers across the country.

And with all that, some kids still
preferred the regular playground.

The partners offer their immense gratitude to Sheri Ashleman for stepping up to coordinate the event this year.

It was exciting to see people having fun together, building relationships and connecting with the community at large. Hope to see you there next year!

Ridgecrest Neighborhood exceeds their Food Drive goal

Friday, January 4, 2019

The Ridgecrest Neighborhood Association not only met their goal to collect 1000 pounds of food for Shoreline Hopelink - they exceeded it!

Over a two month food drive project during November and December they collected 1189.6 pounds of food and turned it over to Shoreline Hopelink for their food bank located at 17837 Aurora Ave N, Shoreline 98133 in the apartment building behind Ronald Methodist Church.

WE DID IT! Thanks to you, we beat our goal and did something great for the folks that use the food bank.

They had major help from two local businesses in downtown Ridgecrest: Café Aroma and the Ridgecrest Pub. Both businesses were collection points for food.

With the cafe opening early and the pub staying open late, food drop off was possible from 5:30am to midnight, seven days a week.

James Pabiniak, Hopelink Shoreline Food Bank Supervisor, responded with these comments.

The food provided from this drive goes a long way to feeding the hungry families we have in Shoreline. It means so much when the community can step up and donate high quality, hearty foods that are mostly within date.
December was our busiest month in our food bank yet, and receiving their food went a long way to ensuring that everyone was able to receive enough food this holiday season and especially for the months to come when donations usually slow down.

If you have food for the Shoreline Food Bank, drop it off at the front desk at Shoreline Hopelink, 17837 Aurora Ave N, Shoreline 98133

"English for Work" for non-native English speakers

Saturday, December 15, 2018

Hopelink is on the ground floor of the
Ronald Commons building
Know anyone who could improve their English skills and/or is looking for a new job? Hopelink's "English for Work" course is designed to teach non-native-English speakers the verbal skills they need to find work.

Students learn and practice vocabulary skills, technology skills, and learn how they need to go about finding work in the USA. They practice their interview skills in "mock interviews" with Hopelink employees.

Every quarter, many of our students are able to find work before they even finish the class! We have many success stories. And while most of our students are seeking work, many just want to improve their English skills.

Classes are free of charge and begin January 7-8-9. They are held at Hopelink's centers in Shoreline, Bellevue, Redmond, and Kirkland. If you have any questions, call 425-250-3007 or email Marci at englishforwork@hopelink.org

From now until July 22 they welcome donations of cash and canned food.

On Saturday, July 22, they are holding a concert from 8pm to midnight. Concert starts around 8.30pm. Ages 21 and over.

Food Lifeline, the "Food Banks' food bank" is the sponsor of the overall food drive with many organizations participating. As the role of Food Lifeline is to take in food in large quantities and repackage it for distribution to food banks, they are happy to have individual events name their own benefit organization.

Twin Ponds Giving Garden second in region for giving

Monday, March 14, 2016

Lettuce Link, a program of King County’s Solid Ground, recently released their 2015 end of Season Report.

The giving garden gardeners at Shoreline’s Twin Ponds Park donated 4,074 pounds of produce to Hopelink Shoreline’s food bank, coming in second out of 60 regional p-patch giving gardens.

Giving gardeners share the bounty of their gardens with their communities by donating to local food banks or emergency meal programs.

“The Giving Garden gave me a place to share my time and have an impact in my community,” stated Twin Ponds Giving Garden gardener Nancy Short. “I shared amazement over worms and cabbage moth jails with neighborhood kids. I shared time working alongside friends, creating something beautiful and valuable, and I shared gardening adventures with visitors. Life doesn't get much better than that.”

Hopelink Shoreline Center Manager Kevin Osborn said,

“Fresh produce is so important to one’s diet. Many of our (Hopelink) clients don’t have the space to grow fruits and veggies and/or work so many hours that they just don’t have the time and energy to properly tend to a garden.”
“The Giving Garden and Twin Ponds has been crucial to our fresh produce supply for clients. The variety of fruits and vegetables coming from the Twin Ponds Garden has been wonderful and we continually here praise from food bank participants about the quality and quantity!”

Solid Ground is a non-profit that works to end poverty and undo racism and other oppressions that are root causes of poverty. Its Lettuce Link program provides seeds, gardening materials, information, and signs for giving gardens. It also offers resources, ideas, and support to help giving gardens grow and develop.

The City of Shoreline offers two organic community gardens to the Shoreline community. One is located at Twin Ponds Park and the other at Sunset School Park. More information about Shoreline’s community gardens here.

Many volunteers needed to help with the Holiday Baskets event this Friday and Saturday

Thursday, December 10, 2015

The Holiday Baskets event this weekend is still in need of many volunteers for Friday and Saturday.

There are many types of volunteer jobs available, from loading boxes and breaking down boxes for recycling, to setting up signage, to sorting and boxing food items. Volunteers are needed to actually work with the families, or to simply hand things to other volunteers.

Shifts typically run for two to three hours. Friday shifts start at 1pm and end at 7pm. Saturday shifts begin at 8:30am and wrap up at 7pm.

The goal of the Holiday Baskets is to give a happy Christmas to every child in need in the Shoreline Public Schools. Originally a project of the Shoreline PTA Council, community partners now include Shoreline Fire, HopeLink, Dale Turner Y, Rotary, City of Shoreline, and Shoreline Public Schools.

Sign up for a specific day and specific job here. You will need to give an email address, but that is all. And your address will not be used for anything not related to your volunteer job.
