Art by Whitney Potter: Martin Luther King Jr.

Monday, January 15, 2024

Martin Luther King Jr. (born Michael King Jr.; January 15, 1929 – April 4, 1968) was an American Baptist minister, activist, and political philosopher who was one of the most prominent leaders in the civil rights movement from 1955 until his assassination in 1968.

A Black church leader and a son of early civil rights activist and minister Martin Luther King Sr., King advanced civil rights for people of color in the United States through the use of nonviolent resistance and nonviolent civil disobedience against Jim Crow laws and other forms of discrimination in the United States.

A holiday in his honor is celebrated on the Monday closest to his January 15th birthday.

In 2024 the holiday does fall on his actual date of birth.

Noise-canceling headphones for dogs

Noise canceling headphones for dogs
I know a lot about cats - from tiny kittens to ferals - but not a lot about dogs. I do know that most dogs react badly to firework explosions and that many react by running. I'll start seeing the lost dog notices on Monday.

I have heard about "thunder shirts" which are supposed to calm canine anxiety - do they really work? But noise cancelling headphones are new to me.

Noise canceling headphones for dogs
A Google search brought up half a dozen brands and styles from what look like old aviator caps to something that looks like high end headphones.

They are sold online and locally in Petco. It seems like they should work, if your dog will tolerate having something on its head.

Here's hoping you have law-abiding neighbors and all the fireworks will be far away from you!

Menorah lighting in Shoreline Sunday is open to the public

Friday, December 8, 2023

Menorah lighting at Shoreline City Hall

Chabad Jewish Center of Shoreline will hold a public Hanukkah menorah lighting event with a massive 9-foot menorah at Shoreline City Hall, on Sunday, December 10, 2023 from 4:30pm to 6pm.

The event will feature an array of entertainment for all ages including giant chocolate “Gelt Drop” performance by the Shoreline Fire Department Ladder Truck, as well as hot drinks and a selection of traditional Hanukkah foods.

Open to the public free of charge. Donations appreciated

Hanukkah, the Festival of Lights, begins this year on the evening of Thursday, December 7 and concludes the evening of Friday, December 15.

It recalls the victory of a militarily weak but spiritually strong Jewish people, who defeated the Syrian-Greeks who had overrun ancient Israel and sought to impose restrictions on the Jewish way of life and practice. They desecrated and defiled the Holy Temple and the oil prepared for the lighting of the menorah – part of the daily service.

Upon defeating their enemies and recapturing the Temple only one jar of undefiled oil was found, enough to burn for one day, but it lasted miraculously for eight. In commemoration, Jews celebrate Hanukkah for eight days by lighting an eight-branched candelabrum known as a menorah, adding another candle each night.

Shop Local: Sky Nursery has a gift shop - and a coffee shop - and a Maker's Market

Saturday, November 25, 2023

By Diane Hettrick

Sky Nursery has greenhouses and outdoor space full of plants, of course, but they also have a year round gift shop inside with gifts for gardeners. House plants make good gifts and the staff are very knowledgeable.

I once walked in to the indoor plant section and said "I need four different plants for people whose idea of plant care is to dump the remains of their cold coffee in the dirt." The staff person was startled for a moment but then came up with four great selections.

Their Christmas ornaments are varied and they often have entertainment during December. And Christmas trees.

They are located between Aurora and Midvale, just north of 185th.

Saturday, December 2, 2023 they have tool sharpening for $4 cash only from 10am to 2pm, music from Strum ukulele band from 1-2pm, and Heartful Rootz Maker's Market. Keep an eye on their events page.

Heartful Rootz Maker's Market

December 2nd & 3rd 10am-4pm

Shop over 30 vendors offering handmade goodies from local Black, Indigenous and People of the Global Majority artists.

As a special treat, join us each day at 12pm & 2pm for story shares from exceptional featured artists. This is a great opportunity to learn more about their work, stories and motivations, and understand how much it takes to create something truly beautiful by hand.

Heartful Rootz is proud to support both experienced and up-and-coming vendors and creatives.
