The Lantern Festival has been part of the Chinese New Year celebrations since the Han Dynasty (206 BC – 221AD). It is said that the holiday evolved from an ancient Chinese belief that celestial spirits could be seen flying about in the light of the first full moon of the lunar calendar.

The children don't look entirely sure about the lion's intentions

People used torches and eventually lanterns to aid them in spotting the spirits. The lanterns come in all shapes and sizes. Some are created in the form of animals, insects, flowers, people or even machines and buildings. Others depict scenes from popular stories teaching filial piety and traditional values. A favorite subject is the zodiac animal of the year - this year, the rabbit.

New Years Eve at Drumlin

Thursday, December 29, 2022

Are you still looking for something not too crazy to do to ring in 2023?

We still have some availability left for three hour seatings at Drumlin from 3:30 to 6:30pm and 9:30pm through midnight.

These seatings include toasts at the top of each hour with a half pour of wine from each time zone turning to midnight and a small bite made by Baking Brad in our kitchen, also inspired by a location in the time zone turning to midnight.

Plus we have optional activities to help release the bad from 2022 and bring luck for 2023.

Polish Cuisine on Wheels is at the curb 5-8pm. Bring just yourself and sit at the bar, or reserve a table for friends or family for the eighth year of this Ridgecrest tradition.

If you can’t quite make it to midnight PST, we’ll discretely hand you your Washington bubbly and your “Brangos” (Brad’s housemade Frango-like truffles) to go.

No dress code but polka dots are considered lucky for the new year. Outdoor covered and heated seating available. Reserve online at www.drumlin.pub. Email us at joinus@drumlin.pub if you have questions.

We hope to see you!

Alternative holiday main dish: Tofurky

Wednesday, November 23, 2022

Tofurky. Photo by Jacob Metcalf

What are you having for dinner this Thanksgiving Day?

Pictured above is a roasted tofurky - a Thanksgiving main dish for vegans and vegetarians, made from flavored and molded tofu, stuffed with dressing.

This photo is a favorite of contributor, former regular columnist / reporter, and friend of the Editor, Frank Workman. When I first published this photo, around 2010, dedicated carnivore Frank was inspired to contact me to huff and puff about this abomination.

I wrote back to tell him I was so inspired by his response that I would be publishing regular articles - tofu easter eggs, tofu valentine chocolates...

This was the beginning of a wonderful friendship and probably a hundred articles from Frank about sports and people and anything else that caught his attention.

He moved to California and gradually lost contact with the Shorecrest sports scene, but he checks in occasionally with special requests for tofu.

Dashing Through The Snow at the Phoenix Theatre

Dashing Through The Snow
written by Jesse Jones, Nicholas Hope, and Jaime Wooten
directed by Renee Gilbert

It’s four days before Christmas in the tiny town of Tinsel, Texas, and a colorful parade of eccentric guests arrive at the Snowflake Inn and deck the halls with holiday hilarity. Trina, the harried yet upbeat innkeeper of this BnB, has more than she can handle coping with these nuttier-than-a-fruitcake lodgers.

Hoyt and his sister, Donna Jo, make the mistake of trying to end a thirty-year feud between their curmudgeonly aunts, Ennis and Della. Ainsley and Lenora, actors from a touring production of A Christmas Carol, descend on the Inn to fulfill a promise.

Add to this an ill-advised romantic rendezvous between Mrs. Claus and one of Santa’s elves, a demanding guest who refuses to leave, not to mention a tipsy housekeeper, and it’s clear it will take more than a kiss under the mistletoe to keep Trina’s spirits merry and bright.

But a spur-of-the-moment Christmas Eve wedding that brings together the fabulous Futrelle sisters and their best friend, Raynerd, takes a surprising and delightful turn that leads to a laugh-'til-your-sides-ache climax, changing all their lives forever. You’ll swear this family-friendly Jones / Hope / Wooten Christmas comedy is more fun than a joyride in a one-horse open sleigh!

*Produced by special arrangement with Dramatist Play Service, Inc.

To fill these holiday baskets for Shoreline Schools students and their families, the YMCA is collecting donations. You may donate online through the YMCA (please note both "Dale Turner YMCA" and "Holiday Baskets").

They are also in need of new, unwrapped toys, unused gift wrap, and gift cards (Amazon, Target, and Fred Meyer are popular, with a $25 value preferred).

Third annual Wreath Walk Edmonds November 17 through December 15, 2022

Tuesday, November 15, 2022

Wreath Walk Edmonds 2022
For the third year in a row, Art Walk Edmonds is presenting Wreath Walk Edmonds!

Created in 2020 as a way for artists to show their creativity during the dark days of the pandemic, AWE is continuing the tradition of hanging original, artist-designed and decorated wreaths in select storefronts in downtown Edmonds during the holiday season.

This year, wreaths will be hung November 17th through December 15th.

Art Walk Edmonds juried the wreath concepts to pick the best of the best in these one-of-a-kind wreaths.

Artists thought “outside the wreath” with their designs to portray the artist’s unique style.

Learn more about the wreath’s artist by reading their bio listed beside the wreath and on the Auction Page

The wreaths will hang in the businesses for a month, during which they will be auctioned off online in time to go to their new homes for the holidays.

Auction Details:

Online Auction goes lives at 5pm on November 17th - timed with the beginning of November’s Art Walk. Stroll around all 12 locations to see the wreaths in person either during Art Walk or during business hours.

Once you find your favorite(s), click the QR code by the wreath or visit charityauction.bid/wreathwalkedmonds to register and place your bid. You will be notified when you are outbid so that you can go place another bid.

You also have the opportunity to skip all the bidding and go straight to the “BUY IT NOW” price.

However, the wreath will not be available to take home until December 16th.

The Auction closes at 8pm on December 15th, timed with the ending of December’s Art Walk.

If you have the winning bid, you may pick up your wreath anytime between December 16th and the 31st (we will let you know and help you coordinate with the business owner).

All proceeds from the Wreath Auction benefit Art Walk Edmonds, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization dedicated to supporting the Arts in Edmonds.

Any questions? Contact Art Walk Edmonds at info@artwalkedmonds.com or 425-298-7947.
