Indigenous People's Day

Monday, October 10, 2022

"Monday, October 10 marks a day of recognition of Indigenous peoples’ resilience and rich cultural heritage in the face of centuries of oppression, assimilation and genocide.

"Recognized on the second Monday in October – the same day as the federally recognized Columbus Day holiday – 2021 marked the first time a U.S. president officially proclaimed an Indigenous Peoples’ Day observance."

The University of Washington has an excellent article on the topic, which  you can read here.

"Since Washington state doesn’t recognize Columbus Day, Indigenous Peoples’ Day doesn’t replace it, nor is Indigenous Peoples’ Day an official city holiday — just a day to honor Indigenous people.

"Columbus Day remains a federal holiday that gives federal government employees the day off from work. And while problematic, it’s worth noting that the day originally became a holiday in 1937 as recognition for the mistreatment of Italian Americans."

Shoreline celebrates Juneteenth with a new mural - dedication Sunday

Earlier this month, the Shoreline City Council declared June 19, 2022, as Juneteenth in the city of Shoreline.

Juneteenth is the traditional day of celebration of the end of slavery in the United States. In 2021, the Washington State Legislature approved Juneteenth as a state holiday (see article). City Hall will be closed on Monday, June 20 in recognition of Juneteenth.

Artists Myron Curry and Vincent Keele

In partnership with ShoreLake Arts and other community members, the City worked with artists Myron Curry and Vincent Keele to add to the Juneteenth mural north of Shoreline City Hall on Midvale Ave North and 178th.

Last year, Curry and Cynncear Easley created the first Juneteenth mural at that site. On Sunday, June 19 from 2:00 to 4:00pm, ShoreLake Arts is holding an informal event for people to drop-in and meet the artists.

Journalist Ida B. Wells
The portrait in the mural is of Ida B. Wells, a prominent journalist, educator, and an early civil-rights leader.

Born into slavery during the Civil War, she went on to become a tireless advocate for the rights of African-Americans and women. In 2020, she was posthumously awarded a Pulitzer Prize “for her outstanding and courageous reporting on the horrific and vicious violence against African Americans during the era of lynching."

The symbols on the mural are Adinkra. Adinkra symbols originated in West Africa but are understood across Africa. They are:

Taken together, these symbolize the building blocks of Solidarity.

Also known as Freedom Day, Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, when Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas and read General Orders, Number 3 informing the people of Texas that all slaves were free.

President Lincoln had issued the Emancipation Proclamation freeing slaves in the Confederate States almost three years before. Juneteenth was quickly followed by the ratification of the 13th Amendment, abolishing slavery. Juneteenth became a holiday in Texas in 1980 and is celebrated today for the ways in which it shows how far we have come as a nation in the past and how far we have to go in the present

Juneteenth is now an official state holiday

The Juneteenth flag flying at the Washington State Capitol. Gov. Jay Inslee, Rep. Melanie Morgan, Office of Equity Director Dr. Karen Johnson, Washington’s Lottery Director Marcus Glasper, BUILD leaders, and attendees at the historic first Juneteenth Celebration on the Capitol Campus.

This Sunday, June 19, 2022 will be the first Juneteenth to be celebrated as an official Washington state holiday. HB 1016, sponsored by Rep. Melanie Morgan, was approved by the Legislature last year to establish the holiday.

The observance marks the day when hundreds of thousands of enslaved people in Galveston, Texas were told of their freedom by federal troops in 1865, more than two years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation.

On Thursday, a business resource group for state employees called Blacks United in Leadership and Diversity (BUILD) hosted a celebration of Juneteenth. The event included the first-ever Juneteenth flag-raising at the Capitol Campus.

"We shake up status quo by continuing to dismantle systemic racism,” said Rep. Melanie Morgan, who highlighted state efforts to advance equity and anti-racism.
“Once again, the state of Washington is leading the way in being an anti-racist state. We are the only state in the nation with the Office of Equity, I was proud to take that vote. We shake things up by continuing to hold one another accountable."

At the celebration on Thursday. Gov.Jay Inslee said,

"Narratives used to justify slavery are still connected with narratives used to oppress Black Americans today. We see it in the forms of mass incarceration, discriminatory housing policies, and a lack of economic investment, creating inequities that have placed Black Americans significantly behind their white counterparts. Until we grapple with our history and its impact on the present, we cannot do the work to improve our future,"

The Seattle Medium chronicled Washington’s legislative efforts to enact this important holiday.

City of Lake Forest Park recognizes observance of Juneteenth as Legal Holiday

Saturday, June 11, 2022

2021 Juneteenth mural by artists Artists Myron Curry and Cynncear Easley

In a resolution approved at its meeting on June 9, 2022, the Mayor and Lake Forest Park City Council declared Juneteenth, June 19th, a city holiday in remembrance of the day in 1865 that enslaved African Americans in Texas finally learned of their freedom.

It was further resolved by the Mayor and Council that the end of the atrocity of slavery should be acknowledged and celebrated by the City of Lake Forest Park as Juneteenth—a day to revisit solidarity and commitment to antiracism.

The City Council also finds that, in celebration of Juneteenth, June 19th will be recognized as a City holiday, and the City will be closed. Because June 19th is on a Sunday this year, City offices will be closed on Monday, June 20, except for Passport Services which will still service the scheduled appointments on June 20.

The Committee of the Whole regular meeting scheduled for June 20 is canceled, and a special Committee of the Whole meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, June 21, beginning at 6:00pm. The meeting will be held in the hybrid format and interested persons may attend in person at City Hall or via Zoom. Please see the agenda, once it is available, for the Zoom information.

From the Truman Library Institute: 6 Ways to Honor Memorial Day

Monday, May 30, 2022

On May 28, 1948, President Harry S. Truman designated the hour beginning at 8pm ET (3pm local) as a period in which all the citizens of the United States might unite in prayer for peace.

If you hear "Taps" being played, here's why:

The TAPS ACROSS AMERICA tribute debuted on national television in 2020 when CBS news “On the Road” correspondent Steve Hartman teamed up with retired Air Force bugler Jari Villanueva, founder of TAPS FOR VETERANS and TAPS ACROSS AMERICA.

The two men invited buglers and musicians to sound Taps from their front porches all at the same time as a part of the TAPS ACROSS AMERICA tribute. The massive, simultaneous event replaced picnics, parades, and other celebrations cancelled due to the pandemic.

This year tens of thousands of musicians are gearing up to play in one of the largest musical performances of all time - "Taps Across America." On Monday, at 3:00pm sharp, they'll play "Taps" to remember America's fallen.

Reviving an old tradition: May Day baskets

May Day basket
Story and photo by Sally Yamasaki

Our doorbell just rang and we found this lovely May Day basket at our door with no one around to thank.

I remember those days of excitement, gathering spring flowers, making baskets, going to a house to deliver the bouquet, and … then ringing the doorbell and running away and waiting to watch.

I found out one of our retired neighbors has befriended a young girl and her family new to the neighborhood.

They have been making this their tradition.

This basket embodies more than the date of May 1st, it holds the beauty of an inter-generational connection and the passing on of a tradition.

Celebrating St. Patrick’s Day 2022 in Edmonds with Irish Dance Open House

March 19, 2022
  • 11:15-12:00 (3-6 year olds)
  • 12:15-1:00 (7-12 year olds)
  • 1:00-1:45 (Adults)

EDMONDS, WA - St. Patrick’s Day is back on the calendar this 2022, and local Edmonds school, the Carroll-Henderson School of Irish Dancing, is celebrating this Irish holiday with free open Irish dancing classes for all ages.

From the youngest little jumper at 3 years old to an adult looking for an energetic fitness class can hop on into the dance studio and experience a bit of Irish culture.

“We were heartbroken to miss our 2020 and 2021 St. Patrick’s Day seasons. However, safety for our dancers is our number one priority, and through this time, we prioritized our dancers’ and community’s health.
"Now that we can safely resume our performances and share this beautiful traditional art form with our community again, we are welcoming in all people to have a taste of Irish dancing!” said head teacher and owner, Lauren Carroll-Bolger.

Irish dancing has been a mainstay of Irish culture since the earliest day of the celts. The traditional music and dance scene were deeply entwined, as throughout the generations, locals would gather to play music and dance. The dance form evolved from its most traditional roots when the Gaelic League was founded in 1893 that promoted Irish language and culture which included dance.

At the Carroll-Henderson School, dancers experience the harmony between the traditional music and dance. Dancers learn the traditional, artistic, and competitive aspects of Irish dancing.

Come experience this living tradition for free at our Irish Dance Open House. Registration is required online at https://www.chirishdance.com/programs.

Carroll-Henderson School of Irish Dancing
Location: Edmonds Masonic Lodge
