On a hill with a northwest forest canopy....

Tuesday, June 1, 2021

Veterans and volunteers placed flags at the Naval
Chapel on the Fircrest campus. Photo courtesy Shoreline
Preservation Society.
A beautiful little Chapel stands in Tribute to veterans who lived and died in service to their country.

It was built there to provide comfort and healing to soldiers who experienced the pain of war.

A small group of veterans and supporters placed flags around the Shoreline Naval Hospital Chapel at Fircrest School.

They offered hope that the Landmark status it has achieved would be maintained and strengthened.

Shoreline Preservation Society has filed a legal appeal to oppose the last challenge by DSHS in a Motion for Reconsideration.

If you would like to help, now would be a great time for a donation to support this work.

For more information contact Janet Way at 206-734-5545

The Fircrest campus is on 15th NE, south of Hamlin Park.

Happy St. Patrick's Day from the O'Dochartaigh clan

Thursday, March 18, 2021

Happy St. Patrick's Day!

After four years, Ancestry just informed me that I have Irish DNA. Not a clue where it came from except that family story about someone bringing a rose cutting from Fermanagh.

However, my husband's O'Dochartaigh clan is well documented so I'm posting some of their family crests. They're probably recent, but they're pretty.

Celebrate Dr. King’s Legacy and Beloved Community with Third Place Commons

Wednesday, January 6, 2021

Third Place Commons invites you to join in a virtual community conversation in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. – “What Is Dr. King’s Beloved Community and How Do We Achieve It?”

Explore the meaning and intention of Dr. King's "beloved community" and hear from a panel of local leaders working to build "beloved community" in their own ways. You'll also have a chance to ask questions and share your own actions and inspiration as we work together toward a common goal for a brighter future.

Mark your calendar for Thursday, January 14, 2021 at 7pm, and REGISTER HERE to attend this event and join the conversation.

You can also celebrate Dr. King’s legacy next week by joining the TPC Movie Club on Tuesday, January 12th (at 7:30pm) to discuss the movie “Selma” (2014). Oscar nominated for Best Picture and winner for Best Song, this critically acclaimed film recounts the story of the 1965 Selma to Montgomery march, led by Dr. King, that ultimately spawned President Johnson’s signing of the 1965 Voting Rights Act.

Check out David Oyelowo’s gripping performance as the civil rights icon and join your Commons community to discuss this powerful film. Register here for the TPC Movie Club.

These events are part of Third Place Commons’ #TPCAtHome programming, which includes weekly meet-ups like foreign language groups, monthly sessions like Computer Q/As and book and movie clubs, and special stand-alone events. Check the online calendar to see what’s happening and get involved.

Stay home and stay safe, but stay connected with Third Place Commons!

Third Place Commons, a community supported 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, has been building real community in the heart of Lake Forest Park for over 20 years. In addition to presenting its largest program, the Lake Forest Park Farmers Market, Third Place Commons now also fosters real community in digital space.

Volunteers make our world go round - PTA Holiday Basket event serves 700 families

Tuesday, December 15, 2020

Your heart will be warmed by this news! Shannon McMaster and Stacy Cotton (and Stacy's mother Marti who made masks for the 75 volunteers) are educators and super organizers who have been long time supporters of and volunteers for the Shoreline PTSA Holiday Basket program.

They, with the help of Shoreline PTA Council co-presidents Amy Reed and Heather Segars, organized envelopes with gift cards and pick-up times for nearly 700 Shoreline Schools families.

On December 12, 2020 their newly designed Covid Safe Holiday Basket event took place for families who have children enrolled in the Shoreline School District and could use a little extra help this Holiday Season.

Each family received gift and grocery cards in a drive through event at the Shoreline Center.

Nearly 700 families and several thousand children (upwards of 1500) received gift cards for gifts and a $100 card for groceries.

This super organized event handed out over $110,000 in gift cards including $50,000 in grocery vouchers from the city of Shoreline, donations from Shoreline and Lake Forest Park Rotaries, Alpha Delta, Hopelink, the Shoreline Fire Department, Dale Turner YMCA and numerous community individuals.

Special thanks to Shannon and Stacy, volunteers and contributors who made the holidays a little brighter for many!

Waste Reduction during the holidays

Furoshiki wrapping cloths for packages

Waste Reduction during the holidays

By Sarah Phillips

Who doesn’t like to get a present? This year you can make your gift giving environmentally friendly. During the holiday season the amount of waste increases significantly. Some of it is from packing materials and other from gift paper.

One easy way to make your gift-wrapping paper more environmentally friendly is to avoid papers with glitter, foil or that are glossy. These papers are trash. The best alternatives include:

Brown paper
Perhaps you have been collecting lots of paper grocery bags. These can be cut and decorated and used as wrapping paper and after the holiday they can be recycled. Parent-teachers can make it a craft project

Furoshiki Wrapping Cloths These cloths were traditionally used in Japan to transport items. They have been reintroduced as a new look for a traditional form. If you have material in your closets from sewing projects, you can use the material as wrapping and then reuse them again next year.

Cloth Bags These are like a pillowcase. You can purchase them or make them quite easily. Put your gift inside, knot the top and add a gift label. After the gift giving you can collect the cloth bags and use them again next year.

Beeswax reusable wraps If you are making food items as gifts you can use beeswax to cover and carry the food. The beeswax can be used in place of single use plastic film to cover food in the refrigerator.

Of course, you can also give items that don’t need to be wrapped. Memberships to museums, zoos, organizations or donations to organizations that might need a little extra this year. These can be enclosed in an envelope. Gift certificates to local restaurants is also a great way to both support local businesses and give great gifts that can be slipped into an envelope.

This year local organizations are struggling because of the Covid-19 virus. Perhaps you can give a donation in someone’s name to a local organization: Third Place Commons, The Shoreline Lake Forest Park Senior Center, ShoreLake Arts, Shoreline Schools Foundation North Helpline, Hopelink, just to name a few.

Maybe get a live Christmas tree this year and after the holiday season plant a new tree. Trees are a great way to capture and sequester carbon.

Celebrate wisely and have a great holiday season.

You can help make your life waste-less all year long by doing simple things like:

  • Using a refillable water bottle
  • Bring your own coffee cup to your local coffee shop
  • Purchase large size items like a shampoo bottle with a pump or try a shampoo bar.
  • Use bar soap instead of soap pumps
  • Shop at thrift stores
  • Bring your own jars to be refilled with bulk items.

Saving the planet one small step at a time. Happy Holidays!

  • What: Gift cards should be focused on local stores that provide toys, clothing, electronics, etc. for children and teens.

By participating in The Sharing Tree, the community's collective effort will make a substantial impact for children to experience the joy of the holidays!
