Ridgecrest annual holiday tree lighting

Sunday, November 22, 2020

From the Ridgecrest neighborhood association

Our Third Annual Holiday Tree Lighting is now underway!

We had a soft launch this year since we can't invite you all back to kick it off this time - and a bit earlier than the last two years because we're ready for some LIGHTS!

Our thanks to the City of Shoreline for sponsoring our tree lighting this year through the Neighborhoods Mini Grant. Additional thanks to Cafe Aroma for hosting the lights again, ensuring that this is one tradition that will persevere this year!

Most importantly, we thank our neighbors and supporters for your contributions during our current triple-match challenge fund drive. Your support helps us plan events and services next year - like this tree lighting, as well as provide aid to our community in a time we need it most.

You can still give and have your donation tripled through November 30, so please visit our website at www.ridgecrestneighborhood.org/Donate

We're looking forward to seeing you all again next year so celebrate your winter holidays safely!

Help support Shoreline PTA Council's Holiday Baskets event

Monday, November 16, 2020

The Holiday Basket event is a partnership among the Shoreline PTA Council, City of Shoreline, the Lake Forest Park Rotary, Shoreline Rotary, the Shoreline Fire Department, the Dale Turner YMCA and Hopelink to provide assistance to families in need in Shoreline and Lake Forest Park.

This year there are over 650 Shoreline and Lake Forest Park families registered, which includes over 1200 children ages 0-18. This is an increase of about 25% over last year's numbers.

Community support is extremely important to be sure that no family or child goes without during this season.

This year, because of no in-person school and Covid restrictions, we will not be collecting food items, but will instead collect money and gift cards to support families.

Contributions of money and gift cards ($25 amount preferred) will go a long way to ensuring a happy holiday season for many families.

The most wanted gift cards include Amazon, Fred Meyer, Target and WalMart.

This year the "baskets" will be made up of gift cards and food assistance vouchers instead of toys and donated food. Every PTA in the Shoreline School District makes major contributions.

The Shoreline Fire Department usually holds a toy drive to support the event, but because of Covid will instead partner with us by collecting gift cards as well.

Money and gift card donations can be dropped off at the WORKS on Wednesday November 18 from 6-8 pm (18560 1st Ave NE - enter from the north parking lot), at any Shoreline Fire Department, or money can also be donated online: https://www.tinyurl.com/DonateHB2020

The event will be held on December 12, 2020 at the Shoreline Center. For any questions or more information, please email: HolidayBaskets@shorelinepta.org

A quiet Memorial Day

Tuesday, May 26, 2020

No cannons, rifle shots, marching bands, or speakers this Memorial Day at Evergreen-Washelli Cemetery on Aurora.

Volunteers decorated the graves of the war dead with flags, as usual. And a few came to decorate individual graves and just walk quietly.

At the Shoreline Veterans' Recognition Plaza the flags flew for all the branches of service.

Stay-At-Home St Pat's Show Mar 17 with The Gothard Sisters

Monday, March 16, 2020

The Gothard Sisters are natives of Edmonds. They have been playing, singing, and dancing Celtic music for years, since the youngest sister was a pre-teen. They travel the nation and the world, performing their exuberant style of dancing and music.

They have announced their special St. Pat's show - which will be online.

"For the first time in over 10 years of being in Celtic music and Irish dance, 2020 is the first year that we do not have a concert on St. Patrick's Day, March 17th.

"And with all the concerts and live performances that are being cancelled this year for safety reasons, we thought - why not take the show online and make it available worldwide?

"So we've decided to take matters into our own hands - this show will be completely safe and you can enjoy it from the comfort of your own living room. ☘️

"Click the link for all the information on the show, when and where to watch it, and why we're doing this."

They ask for a donation of any amount for the 60 minute show.

"Please donate only what makes sense to you - no pressure. Everyone's having different levels of a hard time right now."

Birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr.

Monday, January 20, 2020

Martin Luther King Jr. (January 15, 1929 – April 4, 1968) was an American Christian minister and activist who became the most visible spokesperson and leader in the Civil Rights Movement from 1955 until his assassination in 1968. Born in Atlanta, Georgia, King is best known for advancing civil rights through nonviolence and civil disobedience, inspired by his Christian beliefs and the nonviolent activism of Mahatma Gandhi.

King led the 1955 Montgomery bus boycott and in 1957 became the first president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC). With the SCLC, he led an unsuccessful 1962 struggle against segregation in Albany, Georgia, and helped organize the nonviolent 1963 protests in Birmingham, Alabama. He helped organize the 1963 March on Washington, where he delivered his famous "I Have a Dream" speech.

On October 14, 1964, King won the Nobel Peace Prize for combating racial inequality through nonviolent resistance. In 1965, he helped organize the Selma to Montgomery marches. The following year, he and the SCLC took the movement north to Chicago to work on segregated housing. In his final years, he expanded his focus to include opposition towards poverty and the Vietnam War.

King County was renamed for him in 2005 (1986) and celebrates his birthday on the third Monday in January.

Space Needle fireworks show at 2am cancelled again

Wednesday, January 1, 2020

Laser light show at Space Needle
Update: The Space Needle had hoped to light off the fireworks at 2 a.m., but that display was also canceled due to weather.

The Space Needle has announced that they believe they will be able to hold the New Year's fireworks show at 2am.

High winds at midnight made the show a fire hazard.

King 5 has announced that they will stay on the air for the 2am show.

At midnight, they had a laser light show on the Needle. Lien Titus photographed the rehearsal the day before.

Destinations: Space Needle fireworks show may be in jeopardy

Tuesday, December 31, 2019

Space Needle from Kerry Park on Queen Anne

By Diane Hettrick

Seattle Center always throws a big party for New Year's. Winterfest features an ice rink, and continuous daytime activities. 305 Harrison St, Seattle 98109 (campus map and transportation options)

At 10pm on New Year's Eve they have a big dance party and light show at the International Fountain.

It often rains, but that never stops anyone here.

At midnight a huge pyrotechnic show is planned for the Space Needle. There are parties in the restaurants on the Needle, where people burst into phony hilarity when the camera turns on them.

People on the ground below get cricks in their necks leaning back to see the fireworks - which are pretty impressive on the spot. The fireworks are coordinated with music, except for that one awful year when something misfired and the music was ten minutes ahead - or was it behind? It was cringeworthy.

Sweet Joyce Taylor was one of the newscasters shivering in the cold to cover the event live and she kept trying to think of positive things to say - a lost cause.

When it all goes off well, it can be quite wonderful.

Which brings us to Tuesday night. The Seattle Fire Marshall said that if the wind gusts are 35mph, it's not safe to be blowing things up. Too great a danger of fire.

According to our WeatherWatcher a high wind advisory has been issued. "Southeast winds of 20 to 35mph with gusts to 45mph expected. Winds are expected to be strongest between 9pm and 2am."

The show is only ten minutes long. It's possible that marshall could allow the show.

If it does, and you are there - send us some photos!
