Holiday Events in Richmond Beach on Saturday

Saturday, December 7, 2019

There will be trees inside and out at the
fire district training station

By Teresa Pape
RBCA Executive Director

The Holiday season is upon us and the community spirit is flowing through the streets of Richmond Beach. The Richmond Beach Community Association (RBCA) has a variety of free, family friendly events to get you into the holiday spirit.

The season kicks off with a CHILDREN’S HOLIDAY CRAFT PARTY. Join us for this free family event for all ages at its new earlier time.

On Saturday, December 7th from 10:00am to noon the RBCA and Richmond Beach Library are hosting a craft party for children to create holiday decorations. Come take your picture with “Elfie” the elf who likes selfies. One special craft activity is making cards for Richmond Beach Rehab residents that will be handed out during the caroling event later in the day. The Holiday Craft Party will be in the meeting room of the Richmond Beach Library, 19601 21st Avenue NW.

Also on Saturday, December 7 at 4:45pm, RBCA will light up the night when Santa counts us down to the lighting of the community tree at the annual TREE LIGHTING CEREMONY at the Fire Safety Center located at the intersection of Richmond Beach Road and 20th Avenue NW (next to Streetzeria). Parking is limited to neighborhood streets, so please walk or carpool if possible. Enjoy refreshments and seasonal music while waiting for Santa to arrive on his fire engine.

After the Tree Lighting festivities, join your neighbors at the Richmond Beach Rehab, 19235 15th Avenue NW, at 5:30pm to spread holiday cheer to the residents with the gift of song as we join our neighbors for some COMMUNITY CAROLING

Every year we hear how much the residents enjoy the event – your visit has a much larger impact than the hour of your time the activity involves. Please join us, even if you can’t carry a tune! Song books will be provided, and residents will receive holiday cards our community created for them.

PTA Council Holiday Baskets provide for local children in need

Wednesday, November 20, 2019

The Holiday Basket event is a partnership between the Shoreline PTA Council, City of Shoreline, the Lake Forest Park Rotary, the Shoreline Fire Department, the Dale Turner YMCA and Hopelink to provide assistance to families in need in Shoreline and Lake Forest Park.

This year there are 500 Shoreline and Lake Forest Park families registered, which includes over 1000 children ages 0-18.

This is the equivalent of two elementary schools.

Community support is extremely important to be sure that no child goes without during this season. Contributions of money, items, and time are needed and appreciated.

The "baskets" include age appropriate toys, gift cards for teens, and food. Every PTA in the Shoreline School District makes major contributions.

The Shoreline Fire Department holds a toy drive. They will collect toys from November 29 up until December 13th at any Shoreline Fire Station.

Food and gift card donations can be dropped off at any Shoreline School District school or the Shoreline Center until December 13th.

The event will be held on December 14, 2019 at Kellogg Middle School.

To volunteer, sign up online. There is a large variety of jobs. You can pick your job and your time slot.

Cash donations can be made online here (Note that it is for the holiday baskets event)

Monday is Indigenous Peoples Day

Monday, October 14, 2019

Indigenous Peoples' Day is a holiday that celebrates and honors Native American peoples and commemorates their histories and cultures. It is celebrated across the United States on the second Monday in October, and is an official city and state holiday in various localities.

It began as a counter-celebration held on the same day as the U.S. federal holiday of Columbus Day, which honors Italian explorer Christopher Columbus.

Many now reject celebrating him, saying that he represents "the violent history of the colonization in the Western Hemisphere." Many activists believe that this holiday is a sanitation or covering-up of Christopher Columbus' actions such as enslaving Native Americans.

This Holiday can be seen as a recognition of Indigenous peoples who were oppressed by Christopher Columbus and other colonizers. --Wikipedia

Art by Whitney Potter: Cinco de Mayo

Sunday, May 5, 2019

According to Wikipedia, Cinco de Mayo commemorated a short-lived Mexican victory over the French in the first Battle of the town of Puebla, which now celebrates the day with an arts festival.

More popularly celebrated in the United States than Mexico, the date has become associated with the celebration of Mexican-American culture. These celebrations began in California, where they have been observed annually since 1863. The day gained nationwide popularity in the 1980s thanks especially to advertising campaigns by beer and wine companies. Today, Cinco de Mayo generates beer sales on par with the Super Bowl.
Cinco de Mayo is sometimes mistaken for Mexico's Independence Day—the most important national holiday in Mexico—which is celebrated on September 16, commemorating the Cry of Dolores, which initiated the war of Mexican independence from Spain.

Hundreds of Edmonds residents gathered at Brackett's Landing and ran into the waters of Puget Sound.

Kendahl coming out of the water
"Exhilarating," she said.

And at Magnuson Park's Matthews Beach in northeast Seattle, equally large numbers of people ran into the waters of Lake Washington.

Alain went ankle deep
"Success" and "Far enough" he said

Among the latter were local residents Kendahl and Alain Adjorlolo, although their plunging styles were somewhat different.

600 families served at the PTA Holiday Baskets event

Monday, December 17, 2018

Boxes of food line the hallway at Kellogg MS
waiting to be given to families in need

Nearly 600 families were served on Saturday, December 15, 2018 at the annual Holiday Baskets community giving event, held at Kellogg Middle School for students and families in the Shoreline School District.

Enough toys for 700 young children

In addition to receiving boxes of food items, a separate room provided a variety of stocking stuffers and gift cards for teens and an extensive selection of toys and gifts for those under 10.

Thanks so much to Neha Raichur, Heather Corbin and Robyn Mah for their leadership as coordinators for the Food Drive and to Lori Ramsay and Krista Keller for their year-round efforts to ensure cool gifts for our tweens and teens!

It takes hundreds of student and adult volunteers

Shoreline PTA Council is also grateful for its many incredibly generous and dedicated community partners, including Shoreline Fire Department, Shoreline School District, Dale Turner YMCA, City of Shoreline, Lake Forest Park and Shoreline Rotary Clubs, Center for Human Services, Hopelink, several churches, our very generous donors, and hundreds of students and adult volunteers.

It is powerful to see such commitment and service to support our LFP and Shoreline families who are in need of a little support this holiday season!
