Protect your pet this Fourth of July holiday

Friday, June 28, 2024

After the 4th of July 2022, Zoe wandered for two
days but couldn't find her way back home.
It's no secret that more pets go missing around the Fourth of July than any other time of the year.

The bangs, booms, and pops of fireworks can be quite scary for our furry friends, and they scamper off in search of a good hiding place.

In 2022, a Ridgecrest dog named Zoe bolted when the fireworks started and spent the next two days wandering near 185th on both sides of the freeway. (See article)

Her owners searched extensively, following all the sightings and happily found her hiding in a back yard by North City Park.

To help your pet cope with the noise from fireworks, and reduce the chances that it runs away, Regional Animal Services of King County (RASKC) offers these tips.
  • Keep your pet secured indoors in the quietest room of your home while fireworks are going off. You can also use soothing music or television as a distraction. Some pets will stay calmer when placed in a secure crate in a darkened, quiet room.
  • If your pet is normally kept outside, bring them inside or put them in a well-ventilated garage or shed or in a basement during fireworks displays.
  • Make sure your pet is licensed and has an ID tag or microchip. Pets with ID have a much greater chance of being returned to their owners. If you need to license your pet and you live in the RASKC service area, you can license online.
  • Some pets may benefit from prescription or over-the-counter medications to help keep them calmer. Check with your regular veterinarian for more information about these options.
  • Don’t assume that your pet won’t react just because you haven’t had problems in the past. Sometimes, pets become sensitive to loud noises later in life.
  • If your pet is lost, check in person at all local shelters, and check back often. It may take some time before spooked pets are brought to shelters.
Help for Owners with Missing Pets from RASKC

Owners whose pets are missing can visit kingcounty.gov/LostAPet to fill out a missing pet report and find other tips and information that can help. There is also a "View Found Pets" button on that page where owners can see information about stray pets that have been picked up by animal control officers or community members.

For those who find stray pets wandering in their neighborhood, visit kingcounty.gov/FoundAPet to complete a found pet report and read tips on how to reunite a stray pet with their owner.

RASKC is in south King county, so the chance that your missing pet is there are fairly slim.

Both Shoreline and Lake Forest Park contract with PAWS in Lynnwood. They take in strays from Edmonds, Kenmore, Mountlake Terrace, Mukilteo, and Woodinville, as well.

They have a web page with photos of strays in custody, a place to file a missing animal report and other resources.

Skandia Midsommarfest June 30, 2024 at St. Edward in Kenmore

Monday, June 24, 2024

Photos by John Rowan

Celebrating Midsommar in the Pacific Northwest!
Sunday, June 30, 2024
11am to 6pm
Free Admission

Sign up TODAY to volunteer!

The summer solstice is celebrated by all the Nordic countries, although the celebration may be called by different names, and celebrated in different ways on different days. In Sweden it is called “Midsommar,” so Midsommarfest means Midsommar party or festival.

In Norway, the celebration of the solstice is called Sankt Hans Aften or Jonsok-kveld. In Denmark, the celebration is called Sankthans or Sankthansaften ("St. John's Eve") and in Finland it is called Juhannus.

Midsommarfest, as presented by Skandia Folkdance Society, is a traditional Swedish celebration of the summer solstice, recreated in as authentic a manner as possible, complete with  raising of a garlanded Midsommar pole, a serpentine dance around the pole, and scores of costumed musicians and dancers - traditions practiced in Sweden for centuries.

Over the years since the 1959 inception of Skandia Midsommarfest, the festival has expanded to include contributions from all the Nordic countries so that the rich cultural diversity of all those lands can be experienced by Skandia Midsommarfest attendees.

Spectators are invited to help hoist the 35-foot (previously 45-foot) pole with their muscles or cheers, and then to join in the rousing långdans (serpentine running dance) around the pole, accompanied by the stirring music of massed musicians. Entertainment, food, crafts activities and good times continue throughout the park grounds.

A special focus of Midsommarfest is the Hemslöjdsmarknad - an avenue of traditional crafts where carefully selected crafts people demonstrate their skills and sell their wares. Traditional midsommar food and other Scandinavian delicacies will be offered.

And a flower crown -- the classic midsommarkrans -- ready to decorate to your own taste, will add the finishing touch to your midsommar celebration.

Midsommarfest showcases a wealth of wonderful music and dancing by the Northwest's premier Nordic folk musicians and dancers (and this area boasts some of the best in the Western Hemisphere).

Allspel 2024 led by Ellen Wijsman

Tunes to be played 2x each, in addition to the first, midsommar långdans played longer. After the långdans, start with Ringnessen; end with Stockholmslåten, with probably ~5-6 of the remaining tunes in between. (not in final order)

1. Fjällnäs polska (Midsommarpolskan Långdans, Dalarna Sweden)
2. Ringnesen (Reinlender, Norway)
3. Snar å ta åt (Rørospols, Norway)
4. Stens vals (Waltz, Dalarna,Sweden)
5. Grannas Britta (Slängpolska, Ostergotland Sweden)
6. Schottis från Porjus (Schottis, Lappland Sweden)
7. Fanteladde (Finnskogspols)

Syttende mai in Ballard celebrated with a parade, marching band and many flags

Tuesday, May 28, 2024

Marchers dressed in traditional regional clothing

Syttende mai - Norwegian Constitution Day - is a huge event all over Norway.

It celebrates the day that the The Constitution of Norway was signed on May 17th in 1814, declaring Norway to be an independent kingdom.

According to Wikipedia, It is the second oldest written constitution still in use.[2] Students spontaneously began to celebrate the day with parades.

Flags everywhere
Wikipedia states that "During World War II when Norway was under occupation by the Nazis, it was strictly forbidden for Norwegians to celebrate 17 May, participate in any procession, or to use the colors of the Norwegian flag on clothes. At the liberation on 8 May 1945, the Norwegian flag therefore became a strong symbol of Norway's freedom."

Marching band

Parades, marching bands, and an abundance of flags are hallmarks of the day.

Norwegians from all around Seattle are part of the celebration

Many Norwegians settled in Puget Sound, with concentrations in Ballard and Richmond Beach. (Remember Deadliest Catch? It returns this year for its 20th season. Many of the captains and crew members were from Richmond Beach.)

Ballard holds a parade every year for Syttende mai (May 17th) where marchers and viewers alike don traditional dress to celebrate the day.

In 2023, King Harald V came to Ballard for Syttende mail and while here, knighted Eric Nelson, the director of the National Nordic Museum in Ballard.

The WSDOT Paint Map shows major events, construction, and other happenings around the region.

We've got holiday weekend travel ahead with sporting events, concerts and festivals happening across Washington and the Puget Sound region. Plan ahead, be patient, pack snacks and give yourself some extra time to get where you're going.

And while most construction projects will be paused for the holiday weekend, we have several long-term work zones you’ll need to be ready for, so please slow down and use caution.

If you plan to be on Interstate 5, I-90, US 2 this weekend, expect congestion and more traffic than usual. State ferries also will be busier than normal. You can check our rider alerts to get the latest details.

The Garden of Remembrance, located at Benaroya Hall on Second Avenue between Union and University streets in the heart of downtown Seattle, will hold its annual Memorial Day Ceremony on Monday, May 27, 2024, at 10am.

The ceremony honors the Washington State fallen heroes who have died while in service to their country.

The overarching theme for this year’s commemoration is “Where Heroes Live Forever.” The distinguished keynote speakers will be Gold Star Parents, Brian and Shellie Starr, the parents of LCpl. Jeffrey Starr, who was killed in action in Iraq on Memorial Day, May 30, 2005. Additionally, the ceremony will honor and remember the 20th Anniversary of the Battle of Fallujah, Iraq, Operation Vigilant Resolve and the battle Operation Iraqi Freedom, which all happened during the Iraq War.

The observance will include a presentation of wreaths following the tolling of the bell, a performance by the Mountlake Terrace Brass Ensemble, and the performance of “Taps” by Seattle Symphony Trumpet Michael Myers.

The ceremony is sponsored by the Garden of Remembrance Advisory Board, Benaroya Hall, the City of Seattle, the Gold Star Families of Washington and the Northwest Chapter of the Paralyzed Veterans of America. This event is ADA accessible, and there will be free parking in the Benaroya Hall Garage accessible on Union Street and Second Avenue. GARDEN OF REMEMBRANCE
The Garden of Remembrance is an official state memorial dedicated to the more than 8,000 Washington State citizens who have given their lives in the service of our country since 1941, including those who served in World War II, the Korean War, Vietnam War, Gulf War and post-9/11 conflicts.

Every year on Memorial Day, families are invited together at the garden to honor their fallen loved ones. Some bring photos and other mementos to leave at the wall. The Garden of Remembrance is a half-acre, L-shaped space designed by landscape architect Robert Murase (1938–2005), and it lies along the south and west sides of Benaroya Hall.

Memorial walls of granite, lined by slender reflecting pools, are oriented so that the names face the western sun. In addition to the walls, excerpts from poems honor veterans who died in our nation’s wars, while lines from letters remind us of the personal connections with home that each name represents.

The reflecting pools honor those missing in action, and a waterfall honors those who died in peacetime and other national service. The golden oak tree that centers the garden symbolizes remembrance of the cycle of life and honors the fallen and their families. The garden was dedicated on July 4, 1998.
