La Strada Dolce Pizza at the Spartan Recreation Center, Saturday, Nov. 23; 9am to 4pm for the Shoreline Ninth Annual Holiday Crafts Market

By Patricia Guthrie

Almost every day, Richard Gaeta can be found inside the Spartan Recreation Center sweating a little and gabbing a lot with other weight room regulars.

This Saturday, he’ll be outside tossing flour, throwing dough and slicing and dicing ingredients for his other favorite pastime --- making and eating pizza!

Richard Gaeta
Gaeta, a Shoreline resident for about 10 years, is co-owner of La Strada Dolce Pizza, a wood-fired earthen oven-on-wheels that travels to farmers’ markets and caters private events. The pizza rig and gig is part of the Ninth Annual Shoreline Holiday Crafts Market which will feature 65 artists’  booths and holiday crafts packed inside the two gymnasiums. Look for the pizza guys’ warm toasty oven and chimney smoke outside the gym entrance from 9am to 4pm.

Jim Sundin, of Ballard, constructed the round oven and red trailer platform four years ago, then experimented with sauces, herbs, toppings and crust. He’s best known for his creation of pear, caramelized onion and gorgonzola cheese. A little bit sweet -- and popular for breakfast! Sundin’s also known at Home Depot’s Bitter Lake store where he works in the electrical department and delivers non-stop puns to his co-workers. For example: “While walking through this aisle, I always feel flushed” (plumbing); “The prices on these brushes always makes me bristle” (paint);  “Hey, I hear you guys are getting bored down here” (lumber.)

This will be waiting for you outside the

La Strada Dolce has become a familiar sight, sound, taste and treat at the Edmonds Farmers’ Market every Saturday for the past four summers. Gaeta started working with Sundin two years ago and retired as head cook from the University of Washington’s Rotunda Cafe in April.  “We’re not exactly rolling in the dough,” he said of his new seasonal gig. “But we have lots of steady customers and we have lots of fun.”

Sundin couldn’t help breaking out into a familiar church tune, with own lyrics, of course: “We all have a friend in cheeses.” The guy’s jokes come free; the pizza is sold by the slice or whole pie. As they say, “Eat it while it’s hot, eat while it’s cold, eat our pizza before it’s ten days old.”

Senior Center Bazaar kept going in the dark

Sunday, November 3, 2013

Holiday glow in the hallway

Photos and story from Jon Ann Cruver

On Saturday, November 2, 2013, the second day of the Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Senior Center Holiday Bazaar opened at 10:00am after a very successful Friday.

At 10:21am: thunk! The power went off. It was off for the rest of the day. That didn't stop the shoppers from coming. They came with all forms of flashlights, ready to check out what they could find from the vendors, bake sale, rummage sale, Bargain Corner, Silent Auction and what was in the kitchen for lunch!

Thimblebelle Quilters continued to sell raffle tickets
for their beautiful quilt

I-Phone flashlights were seen "walking the halls" along with plain old regular flashlights and lanterns; one woman came carrying her flashlight as she negotiated the halls with her walker. It was an amazing sight, sort of the lemonade from the power outage-lemon. People were shopping, chatting, laughing, eating lunch; just a general good feeling was felt throughout the lantern lit building.

Vendors Pat and Tami Hanson came prepared

And, to all of those shoppers, the vendors, and the volunteers working the event: thank you all for still coming and supporting our event. We took a hit, of course, but it still felt good to see people coming in and enjoying themselves, despite it all. This will be a Holiday Bazaar that will not be forgotten.

Winterfest supplies free holiday fun this Saturday, December 1st

Never too young for Winterfest
Updated 11-30-2012 10:15pm

Cascade K-8, Shoreline District's only K-8 Community School, will host its annual Winterfest this Saturday to satisfy local shoppers and community members who want to absorb some festive vibes while perusing offerings from local artists, artisans, cooks and the school community itself.

The event is held in the Meridian Park/Cascade K-8 Cafeteria at N 175th and Meridian Ave N in Shoreline, from 10am to 4pm.

Billed as a Holiday Gift and Craft Extravaganza, Winterfest brings together experienced artists and new crafters eager to present tantalizing items for Shoreline area shoppers. A newly formed collective, W.H.A.M. (Working Hard Artsy Mamas), will offer adorable, stylized knitted baby hats and homemade food gifts.

Another vendor, Cascade parent, Laurie Blau-Marshall, has been a working artist for 22 years and has sold her paintings, mixed media art and jewelry at boutiques and galleries downtown. Blau-Marshall reported, "I like selling at Winterfest not only because it contributes to my daughter's school, but also because community based events like this have an intimate feel and I enjoy seeing who buys my art rather than having the middle man of the store or gallery."

Some of other anticipated vendors include: Michelle Templeton Art (paintings and woodblocks), Sue's Sewing (American Girl doll-sized clothing), Siren Salvage (hand-wrought jewelry, vintage/quirky home decor, repurposed pieces), One Robin Road (Mason jar travel mugs), The Sweet Phoenix (healing salts, gluten-free food, cards, candy), Sew What?! (Ugly dolls, tote bags), SPLASH lotion (Cascade PTSA) as well as more jewelry, hand knits, embroidery, wrapping paper, memory boxes and MORE.

In addition to gifts for sale, there will also be a Bake Sale, a Coffee Corner for community gathering and a school info table, providing information about Cascade K-8, including details about the school's unique middle school program called Journey.

Cascade's Jazz Band will have its very first performance of the year at 2:30pm as part of the event. Jazz Band leader, David George, promises that the band has "enthusiasm galore" and though the school is small, there are a variety of instruments in the band this year, including flute and violin. Cascade's extra-curricular multi-age music class, studying folk songs and dance, will also perform at 2pm.

Artfest, a celebration of the school's art program, will be part of the celebration, too. A gallery of student art will share the space with vendors. Winterfest offers fun for people of all ages. Admission is free.
