It's time to inflate your dragons, buy your trick or treat candy (go ahead and eat it - there's time to buy more), set up your giant skeleton (I've seen one already, peering over the fence), plan your costume, and put all the local Halloween events on your calendar.

After all, it's only four weeks until it's all over. Make haste!

ParentMap: Halloween's Trendiest Kid Costumes for 2023

Tuesday, September 26, 2023

The Little Mermaid
Parent Map has a lovely article by Tiffany Doerr Guerzon about the most popular costumes of 2023

Halloween is quickly approaching, and believe it or not it’s time to start putting together the perfect costume (and pulling out a craft or two, too).
There is always the classic ghost, witch or monster, but if your little trick-or-treater wants something more on-trend, you’ve come to the right place.
Mario Brothers
2023 was a great year for epic kid entertainment. Stand-out hits include: “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,” “Super Mario Bros,” "Elemental” and, of course, the wildly popular “Barbie” movie.

These movies brought more than just entertainment; they brought Halloween costume inspiration too. Whether you are shopping for your tot, tween or a kid in-between, these character costumes should do the trick.

Most of the costumes seem to be available on Amazon.

Barbie would be the easiest do-it-yourself outfit
This one is on Amazon.com

Of course, in the Northwest, if you are actually going door to door on Halloween, your child's costume will probably need to be covered by a raincoat. Someday, someone will create a rain-proof costume.

The rest of Tiffany's article - and photos of the costumes - can be seen here.

IS THERE PARKING?
Yes! There is plenty of parking around the building.

WILL THERE BE FOOD?
The El Cabrito food truck will be there serving up delicious and authentic Oaxacan cuisine, plus there will be fresh tamales.

WHAT SHOULD I BRING?
You are invited to honor those who are no longer with us by contributing to the community altar. We encourage you to bring photos of loved ones or other small items for the community altar.

You can honor the dearly departed by adding photos of loved ones who have passed or other items to the community altar.

The event is free! There is a $5 suggested donation to help offset the cost of producing the event.

WHAT IS DIA DE MUERTOS ALL ABOUT?
Día de Muertos is a holiday typically celebrated on November 1 and 2 where people gather to honor loved ones who have passed away. It is a joyful celebration rather than a time of mourning. Día de Muertos gatherings traditionally involve dancing, singing, food, and drink as ways of celebrating the lives our dearly departed. The origins of the holiday are largely in Mexico, with some regional variations, but it is also observed in many other places around the world, including right here in Shoreline!

Halloween eye safety

Saturday, October 29, 2022

Stylish Belles
By Dr. David Epley

It’s all fun and games until someone loses an eye. Halloween is a particularly perilous time for eye-health. Many costumes involve enhancements and alterations to the eye.

One mishap can lead to frightening results. Glitter mishaps or costume contact lenses sold illegally are just a couple of the hazards that can lead to temporary and permanent blindness.

To avoid a real-life horror story, remember that eye tissue is among the most delicate in the human body. Damage to that tissue is especially difficult to reverse.

The Washington Academy of Eye Physicians and Surgeons wants to make sure you have a safe Halloween this year.

Below are a few safety tips to avoid a real-life horror story as you and your family navigate the hazards that come with some Halloween costume-related accessories.

False eyelashes
  • Test for lash glue allergies
  • Don’t share false eyelashes with anyone else
  • Wash your hands before putting on and taking off
  • Visit an experienced aesthetician to see what shape and weight works best with your eyes
Eye makeup
  • Avoid metallic, glittery or flakey eye makeup
  • Avoid applying products inside the eyelash line, which has been shown to increase irritation and dryness of the eye surface
  • Carefully select the makeup you use, and be aware that certain ingredients such as fragrances, preservatives, metallic pigments and color additives might cause irritation to your skin or eyes
  • Remove all eye makeup before bed
Halloween costume contacts

Wearing colored contacts that weren’t prescribed to you could cause:
  • Painful infections
  • Sore and scars
  • Corneal abrasions
  • Corneal ulcers
  • Vision loss
Other contact safety tips:
  • Don’t share contacts with anyone
  • Always remove contacts before sleeping
  • Be sure to use contact solution and not water
  • If you experience any redness, irritation or decreased vision while or after using contact lenses, discontinue wear immediately and reach out to your eye care provider for guidance
Sure, a simple accessory can complete a costume and bring it to the next level, but before you purchase anything, consider asking your eye doctor what would be best.

For more eye-related safety and information, visit Vision for Washington, CDC and the FDA.

How to Die on Other Worlds

From the SETI Institute in Mountain View, California comes this Halloween-adjacent discussion.

How to Die on Other Worlds
Monday, Oct 31, 2022 2:30 PM PDT

Welcome to outer space. Life is harsh out here. We come from a beautiful, pale blue dot thriving with a wide variety of life. And now we're planning for lunar bases and heading off to Mars.

These worlds - and others in our solar system - are not friendly to human life. In honor of Halloween, just how will these other worlds try to kill us if we were to go there?

(Including Europa, even though we should "attempt no landing there".)

Join Seth Shostak and Beth Johnson for a spirited and humorous discussion on the horrors of death on other worlds.

Richmond Beach Halloween Carnival Saturday from 3 - 7pm

Poster designed by Roz Vaughn
Richmond Beach's
Halloween Carnival
October 22, 3-7pm
Syre Elementary

Richmond Beach Community Association’s Halloween Carnival is this Saturday, from 3:00 to 7:00pm, at Syre Elementary School.

Children of all ages and abilities and their guardians can scare up some fun at the carnival where they will find traditional carnival games with prizes, inflatables, food and more.

Early entry for special needs kids

Children who have a particular way of seeing, hearing, moving, feeling, thinking, or perceiving the world are often not comfortable attending functions such as this due to the commotion of large crowds and noises.

To make the carnival accessible, kids with special needs and their families will have the gym to themselves for one hour from 2:00 to 3:00pm to play carnival games in a less busy environment while also allowing any modifications possible to meet their skills and abilities.

Their parents and/or caretakers are invited to volunteer at the carnival and use the special skills and knowledge they possess to staff the carnival games during this hour.

Excited to help? Please email carnivalvolunteers@richmondbeachwa.org
