Halloween decorations

I have been delighted with all the Halloween outdoor decorations this year - almost as pleased as when I see a dog walker with reflective gear on dog and human!

This tree is in the Echo Lake neighborhood of Shoreline.

Maybe it's because our world made an abrupt shift in its way of doing business this year or maybe manufacturers stepped up production of orange lights but I have never seen so many decorations.

Trees, windows, fences, houses, walkways.. last year it was just one Halloween dragon in Ridgecrest. This year I've seen three dragons and giant spiders everywhere.

The teddy bears that were in windows have given way to ghosts and witches.

I hope they stay up until Christmas.

If you have photos of local homes, send them to Editor@ShorelineAreaNews.com

P.S. There is an absolutely gorgeous house on Perkins Way in a location I would never send a photographer to. If you know the homeowners, ask them to send in a photo!

Neighborhoods celebrate Halloween with parades and candy hanging from trees

Sunday, November 1, 2020

Individual neighborhoods and streets coped with COVID-19 Halloween by staging local parades, sharing neighborhood candy maps, and using various type of social media to spread the word.

Photos by Steven H. Robinson

Some people put the candy out in bags on tables or benches near the street. Some hung the candy from trees that overhang the sidewalks.

These scenes were shot in Ridgecrest on 8th Ave but they were repeated all over the area.

Each year the collection of pumpkins, witches and ghosts continues to grow larger while moving from one home to another.

It is currently displayed on 25th NE near NE 182nd St. in Shoreline (bordering Lake Forest Park).

Phantoms are on the loose in the Ridgecrest Neighborhood

Tuesday, October 13, 2020

Thanks to Ridgecrest resident, Jorien, "Phantom" baskets of goodies are making their way around the neighborhood.

If you receive one, you are in luck.

The goodies and basket are yours to keep - but you are encouraged to make up a basket and pass it, along with a copy of the instructions, to someone else in the Ridgecrest Neighborhood.

You can start a Phantom on your own so that more Phantoms are working their way around the neighborhood.

Instructions to make a Phantom:

Cost-wise, the one pictured here is about $12 with items from the dollar store. Find a container: basket, flower pot, cooking pan... whatever... and fill it with goodies. Possible items to put in a basket: dish towels, Halloween stuff, non-perishable food items, deck of cards, pretty napkins, chocolates, games, facemasks - virtually anything!

Print or copy the instructions and include them in your basket. Make a surprise drop-off anywhere in Ridgecrest. Does not have to be a neighbor or someone you know. If you receive a Phantom, take a photo and post on their Facebook page.

Enjoy! And thank you Jorien for this fun idea!

Note: You can create Phantoms in any neighborhood!

300 kids at Trick or Trunk at Calvin Presbyterian

Sunday, November 3, 2019

Photos and text by Pam Cross

Calvin Presbyterian Church sponsored its 8th “Trick or Trunk” this Halloween. Hillwood Community Network partnered for the event this year and plans to next year as well.

There were more than 20 participating cleverly decorated Trunks offering treats for the some 300 small pirates, princesses, turtles, bananas, construction workers, chocolate chip cookies, some really scary masks, sharks and a Woody from Toy Story. Just to name a few. Many adults were also in costume.

This is a great family event providing safe “truck or treating” at 18826 3rd Ave NW, Hillwood neighborhood, Shoreline.

There was a chili cook off - judged before the event so attendees could taste the different entries. Free hot cider and coffee were welcome as temperates fell. There was a bouncy house and a contest for best costume.

Add this event to your calendar for next October 31st. We’d love to see you there.
