Ghost stories from the Ridge Runners' Second Annual Halloween Run

Sunday, November 3, 2019

Crest Theatre photo by Steven H. Robinson
“Strange things happen when the theater is void of its viewers. Things in the office fall at random, I hear small noises, and see small movements in my periphery. Sometimes I think it’s just the corner of my glasses playing tricks with my mind but there’s also a subtle feeling of not being alone.”

By Megan Kogut

The Ridge Runners, a social running group out of Ridgecrest Public House, has made it a tradition to do a ghost story run on the Wednesday before Halloween.

A few runners volunteer to research and write ghost stories based on neighborhood features that were already a little curious or spooky. We run, stop at each site, and the dark, someone reads a story to the rest of us.

Also we wear costumes. This year, there were about 20 runners for the Halloween run, including a jester, a skeleton, a bike rider, a ballerina, a bear, a pirate, Wallace and Shaun the Sheep, and two scarecrows.

Our stories may or may not be appropriate for children. But we published them on the internet. If you like spooky, creative, and local stories, we encourage you to read our stories on Halloween.

Also, feel free to join the Ridge Runners any Wednesday at 6:30pm for runs of 3-5 miles, with optional social time afterwards at the pub. We run year round, rain or shine.

The Ridgecrest Pub is located at 520 NE 165th St, Shoreline 98155.

Wondering what to do with this year's Halloween Costume?

Friday, November 1, 2019

The Richmond Beach Congregational Church Youth Group is collecting gently used and new Halloween Costumes.  All sizes and All ages!  (no weapons please)

The costumes will be collected, cleaned, and packaged to help create a Free Costume Closet available next year to local area kids and families, as well as local outreach organizations such as Mary's Place.

After Halloween stores often have really good sales on costumes, consider purchasing one or two and donating to the Free Costume Closet.

Cartoon by Whitney Potter: Halloween - and an Irish Halloween blessing

An Irish Halloween blessing:

At all Hallow's Tide, may God keep you safe

From goblin and pooka and black-hearted stranger,

From harm of the water and hurt of the fire,

From thorns of the bramble, from all other danger,

From Will O' The Wisp haunting the mire;

From stumbles and tumbles and tricksters to vex you,

May God in His mercy, this week protect you.

Who stole the Halloween dragon? - and welcome the Christmas dragon

Wednesday, October 30, 2019

Patty Hale on the Ridgecrest Facebook page reports that

"Somebody stole the Halloween Dragon out of the front yard at the corner of 5th Ave NE and NE 155th Monday night or early Tuesday morning..

"We just can't believe the dragon is gone!"

If you see a stray dragon, send a message through the Ridgecrest Neighborhood Association Facebook page.

But some good news:

"Ridgecrest Neighbor Shanna put together a funding drive to buy a new dragon to replace the stolen one.

"She has already collected enough and has placed the order. Unfortunately, it won’t arrive until Friday.

"Guess we will now have a Christmas Dragon in Ridgecrest.
"Happy Halloween!"

5th Annual Trick or Treat Street in Lake Forest Park

Tuesday, October 29, 2019

For the 5th year in a row, neighbors at the cul-de-sac end of NE 203rd Street will be closing off the street to make it safe for trick-or-treaters – especially the little ones.

Our permit from the City of Lake Forest Park allows us to close off our street on Halloween so that trick-or-treaters can walk from home to home without worrying about cars. Cones will be up by 30th Ave to block off the street starting about 5:30pm.

This might be a nice stop for families with little ones after they finish trick-or-treating at Lake Forest Park Town Center* (4-6pm) since our neighborhood will be closed off from 5:30-7:30pm.

*See Halloween Family Fun at Third Place Commons.

NE 203rd, east of 30th NE (which runs from Ballinger to NE 205th.

The most extravagant Halloween House is in Sheridan Heights in Lake Forest Park on 38th NE just south of the intersection with 37th NE (hey - it's Lake Forest Park where no streets are straight!)

It's worth seeing by daylight and then again at night when the lights are on.

Steve says that one photo can't possible do it justice - and he couldn't get it all in frame!

uh-huh - just when you thought it was a sweet display. Come upon on this at night!

It must take weeks to get it set up. To whoever did this - thanks for the memories!

The Halloween lineup at Del Rudolph's

By Rob Oxford

While returning an item borrowed from a friend earlier this week, I found myself taking a wrong turn and getting lost. To my delight I happened upon this marvelous Halloween display just off 15th Ave NE across from Fircrest.

Pirate ships and Halloween trains

I love decorations, but I must confess that since my sons are now in their teens and much less likely to be around during the holidays, spending hours digging in the attic for decorations and untangling strings of colored lights has lost some of its appeal.

Not so for Del Rudolph and his wife Diana. Together they take great pride in decorating their home for the holidays. Halloween, Christmas, Easter. They have wooden cutouts for every occasion.

What started over two decades ago as a single Bugs Bunny cutout for their first grandchild, has now blossomed into literally hundreds of holiday decorations which Del takes great pride in setting up each year. Some are quite ornate, like the three-piece pirate ship with its ghostly crew or the dragon that hangs above the carport. As one can imagine, the Rudolph’s home can become quite popular depending on the season.

In storage until Christmas

All handmade with a jigsaw and expertly painted, Del was happy to give me a quick tour of his outbuilding which houses nothing but his fabulous creations. Out of respect for his neighbors, he declined my request to include his address in this article, citing the abundance of traffic which already finds its way down his street each year.

However, he assured me that when night falls and the ghouls and goblins awaken from their afternoon naps, a slow drive north on 15th Ave NE from 145th in the vicinity of Hamlin Park and the old Fircrest school, looking west one might easily spot a friendly witch returning from an evening ride on her magic broom.

I appreciate Del taking the time to share his passion with me and look forward to visiting once again at Christmastime. I’m certain our community of Shoreline hosts many homes like that of Del and Diana Rudolph and to find them, I plan on “getting lost” more frequently.
