Children donate a tithe of their Halloween candy to charity

Candy tithe at Church of the Redeemer
Mary Nilsen, Children and Family Ministry Coordinator, and Emily Scott leading the church school children to present their tithe of Halloween candy to Fr. Jed Fox during the offertory on All Saints’ Sunday at Church of the Redeemer in Kenmore.

Children from Church of the Redeemer in Kenmore donated a tithe from their Halloween candy on All Saints’ Sunday, November 4, 2018. They chose to donate it to Chaplains on the Harbor in Grays Harbor County, Wash.

On October 28, 2018, the church school children were told a story about stewardship and sharing a tithe using LEGO DUPLO bricks. Families were invited to help their children donate a tithe of their Halloween candy on Nov. 4. A teen helper in the church school program trick-or-treated for charity, adding a large amount of candy. On All Saints’ Sunday, Nov. 4, all children proudly brought their candy tithe forward at the offertory.

The children voted using DUPLO blocks for the charitable organization to receive their collective candy tithe, all 16 pounds of it. They voted for Chaplains on the Harbor.

Presiding Bishop Michael Curry visited Chaplains on the Harbor earlier this year. When there in June 2018, Curry said this about Chaplains on the Harbor, “A movement starts small and keeps on growing.” Citing the biblical parable of the tiny mustard seed that eventually grows into a tree, he proclaimed, “This is a mustard seed movement!”

Upon hearing about this donation, Chaplains on the Harbor said, “This is a wonderful gift!” They had brought leftover candy given to children at St. Mark in Montesano, Wash., to their Sunday dinner. Folks were very happy to get some sweet treats. They said that their folks “…will love this and we will make sure they know it came from kids in Kenmore.”

Mary Nilsen observed, “An unexpected outcome of the candy tithe was how hard it was for some of the children to pour their candy into the big baskets set in front of the altar, demonstrative of the struggles many adults have when asked to share their treasure!”

Chaplains on the Harbor is a group of chaplains who seek to build a freedom church of the poor by pastoring, organizing, and empowering the leadership of poor people in Grays Harbor County, Washington. They stand alongside the poor of Grays Harbor who have lost resources, land, and spirit, by doing the following:

Church of the Redeemer is at 6210 Northeast 181st Street in Kenmore. The campus is a short distance north of Bothell Way, near the Burke-Gilman Trail. The entrance looks like a gravel driveway. The campus is larger on the inside than it is on the outside. And, we managed to hide a large building on the side of a hill that is not easily seen from the street.

Community life at Redeemer centers on worship in the Episcopal tradition. Art and music vitally deepen this worship. Our faith expresses itself with service to people, locally to internationally.

The Episcopal Church welcomes you.

For the Birds: Owls belong to Halloween

Eurasian Eagle-owl with demonic eyes (most of our scary traditions are from Europe)
Stock photo

By Christine Southwick

Halloween decorations often have owls depicted — often flying toward the unwary night traveler. Witches, wolves, bats, vampires all make sense; but why owls?

Barred Owl— our most
commonly heard local owl
Stock photo
Could it be that any creature that flies, and especially hunts during the dark hours, is scary and frightening?

In olden times, anything that appeared without warning from outside the glow of campfires and hearths was something to be feared and defended against. Screams, hisses and hoots seem to chill the soul, especially when the source is disembodied and ethereal.

And finding remains of small dead animals just lead to stories of how BIG OWLS could hurt children, pets, and maybe even adults. (It doesn’t help that owls may defend their breeding territories by strafing the heads of unwary trespassers).

Because the leading edge of owls’ feathers are fringed, owls are able to materialize suddenly, hauntingly silent, without making any noise with their wings. Superstitions became hard-wired into many people’s psyche, and owls are often viewed as evil wraiths when confronted at night.

Additionally, the huge European Eagle-owl has orange eyes, that reflecting the firelight appear to be demonic.

Barn Owl suddenly appearing

Which owl is the scariest?

I vote for the Barn Owl!

Instead of hooting, it produces piercing screams that sound like someone is being killed! Add to that, the ghostly white face that suddenly appears floating, coming straight toward you, and no wonder people are afraid, especially during the Halloween season that has its own scary mystique!

Barn Owls as a species are so successful that sub-species are found around the world — their family order is distinct from all the other owl species.

Our most common owl in the Shoreline - Lake Forest Park areas is the Barred Owl, which makes its own funny sounds in addition to its hoots that sound like “Who, who cooks for youuuu?”

Northern Saw-whet Owl (only 8” tall)
We also have Western Screech Owls and Northern Saw-whet Owls in the area, mostly trying not to be eaten by the bigger Barred Owls.

All our owls eat mice, voles, shrews, small squirrels, smaller birds, and large insects.

Some cultures view owls as beneficial and a blessing (Athena’s owl is an example), whereas other cultures believe seeing an owl during the day predicts a soon-to-happen death.

Many peoples believe that owls are wise, in part because of their large eyes, and their quiet patient nature.

Personally, I love to hear owls — any of them….

Halloween House in Sheridan Heights - people who really appreciate Halloween

Word is that the best Halloween House is in Sheridan Heights in Lake Forest Park in the 3800 block of NE 164th.

Photos by Steven H. Robinson

These are people who clearly love Halloween - enough to share it with 4-500 of their nearest neighbors, who drive by every year.

It's great at night, but you can appreciate it even more in the daylight.

It really looks completely different - but not less creepy - by daylight.

Probably not for the Littles but teens will love it.

Richmond Beach Halloween Carnival open to all

Ghosts, Goblins and Games, oh yeah! This fall marks the 32nd anniversary of Richmond Beach Community Association’s spooktacular Halloween Carnival.

On Saturday, October 27, from 3:00 to 7:00pm, at Syre Elementary School, 19545 12th Avenue NW, children of all ages and abilities and their parents can scare up some fun at the carnival where they will find traditional carnival games with prizes, inflatables, haunted house, raffle, food and more.

Kids love to show off their costumes for this event; parents are encouraged to dress up too!

Parking is limited, so please walk or carpool if possible. Tickets are two for $1 and may be purchased with cash or credit cards. All games and attractions are paid for with tickets; food can be purchased with tickets or cash. Most games are one ticket, larger attractions are two tickets and food prices vary.

Soft opening for kids with special needs
Children who have a particular way of seeing, hearing, moving, feeling, thinking or perceiving the world are often not comfortable attending functions such as this due to the commotion of large crowds and noises.

To make the carnival accessible, kids with special needs and their families will have the gym to themselves for one hour from 2:00 to 3:00pm to play carnival games in a less busy environment while also allowing any modifications possible to meet their skills and abilities. Their parents and/or caretakers are invited to volunteer at the carnival and use the special skills and knowledge they possess to staff the carnival games during this hour.

Volunteers needed
We need over 150 volunteer people, families and businesses to make this event happen. Please consider volunteering for at least 1.5 hours, but you can sign up for more than one shift!

We need at least two people for each block, preferably one of which is an adult. More people are fine—just add your family/business name in both spots (if you have more than two people helping). Follow this link to volunteer to set up, staff a booth or cleanup: HERE.

We also need volunteers to help move props/games to and from the storage unit and to help construct and tear down the haunted house. Follow this link to sign up to help with these tasks: HERE

If you have questions, please contact Volunteer Coordinator Adrienne Houck.

Raffle donations needed
Contact Chris Beck to donate an item for the raffle or cash to purchase prizes. Gifts appropriate for kids or adults are gladly accepted. Anyone can donate an item and will be acknowledged in the Richmond Beach Community News.

Cakes needed
Contact Liza Ragan to donate a cake for the cake walk or simply bring it with you when you come to the carnival. Covered cakes can be delivered to the stage.

More information
Visit Richmond Beach Carnival for more information about the event.

As you can see, there are many ways in which to participate in this community-building event. Find the one that works best for you and call today to volunteer. Above all else, bring your family to the carnival for a good time, to mingle with friends and neighbors and to strengthen relationships in our community.
