Now here's someone with the spirit of Halloween! Bet they have good treats.

Did you hear about the towns in east Virginia that threaten to arrest teens who trick or treat?

“If any person over the age of 12 years shall engage in the activity commonly known as “trick or treat” or any other activity of similar character or nature under any name whatsoever, he or she shall be guilty of a misdemeanor and shall be punished by a fine of not less than $25.00 nor more than $100.00 or by confinement in jail for not more than six months or both.”

They definitely do not have the spirit of Halloween.

October Yard Art

Dancers swirling, sheets un-furling, no reason for fear

Faces smiling, all the whiling, Hallows’ Eve is near

Embers sizzle, no rain drizzle, air is cold and clear

Ghostly prancing, gaily dancing, bony feet appear

Such pretending, fun unending, favorite time of year

Parent Map: Best Pumpkin Patches and Corn Mazes

Stocker Farms turns into Stalker Farms at night

Shoreline and Lake Forest Park have some productive vegetable gardens but for farms you need to head north on I-5 into Snohomish county.

This time of year the pumpkin farms are in full swing with family activities for ages from toddlers to teens (and adults).

Our friends at Parent Map have compiled a list of ten farms in Snohomish county (and other locations).

Pumpkin patch experiences vary widely. Purists can pick their gourds at a farm that offers little more than hot cider as a side activity, while families looking for a more carnival atmosphere can visit farms and pumpkin patches tricked out like amusement parks — the offerings get a little wilder each year.

They have photos and detailed descriptions of what each farm offers.

Happy Halloween in cartoon and rhyme

   Halloween 1992

Here they come beating a path to my door,
In twos and threes, and fours or more,
Floating, bloating, and gloating with “Goshes!”
Arms flopping, feet stomping in ghoulish galoshes.

I open the door -- look out at the street.
Oops, those furtive urchins are down by my feet.
“Is it that time again?” I ask, beating a hasty retreat,
But they ambush me with “Trick or Treat!”

My, you’re a cute rumpled dumpling,” I mumble
And stick out a tray of food for fast fumbling.
“Take two, my little Petite Piece of Pasta.
At the Mirabeau or Canlis these morsels would cost ya.”

Yes, little jesters, keep gesturing and pestering.
Keep those digestive juices just festering.
Halloween beans and licorice cookies,
I’ve reams of rollicking recipes, rookies.

Yes, it takes a staunch stomach and that’s no joke.
This beast of a feast isn’t for finicky folk.
So eat spinach and carrots until the next time
When I greet you again with more rare food and rhyme.

Witchie (Vicki) Westberg

Halloween safety tips - and free reflectors at LFP City Hall

Stop by Lake Forest Park City Hall to pick up a free reflector.

Halloween is an exciting time of year for kids, and to help ensure they have a safe holiday, here are some tips from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP).

ALL DRESSED UP:
  • Plan costumes that are bright and reflective. Make sure that shoes fit well and that costumes are short enough to prevent tripping, entanglement or contact with flame.
  • Consider adding reflective tape or striping to costumes and trick-or-treat bags for greater visibility.
  • Because masks can limit or block eyesight, consider non-toxic makeup and decorative hats as safer alternatives. Hats should fit properly to prevent them from sliding over eyes. Makeup should be tested ahead of time on a small patch of skin to ensure there are no unpleasant surprises on the big day.
  • When shopping for costumes, wigs and accessories look for and purchase those with a label clearly indicating they are flame resistant.
  • If a sword, cane, or stick is a part of your child's costume, make sure it is not sharp or long. A child may be easily hurt by these accessories if he stumbles or trips.
  • Do not use decorative contact lenses without an eye examination and a prescription from an eye care professional. While the packaging on decorative lenses will often make claims such as "one size fits all," or "no need to see an eye specialist," obtaining decorative contact lenses without a prescription is both dangerous and illegal. This can cause pain, inflammation, and serious eye disorders and infections, which may lead to permanent vision loss.
  • Review with children how to call 9-1-1 (or their local emergency number) if they ever have an emergency or become lost.

CARVING A NICHE:
  • Small children should never carve pumpkins. Children can draw a face with markers. Then parents can do the cutting.
  • Consider using a flashlight or glow stick instead of a candle to light your pumpkin. If you do use a candle, a votive candle is safest.
  • Candlelit pumpkins should be placed on a sturdy table, away from curtains and other flammable objects, and not on a porch or any path where visitors may pass close by. They should never be left unattended.

HOME SAFE HOME:
  • To keep homes safe for visiting trick-or-treaters, parents should remove from the porch and front yard anything a child could trip over such as garden hoses, toys, bikes and lawn decorations.
  • Parents should check outdoor lights and replace burned-out bulbs.
  • Wet leaves or snow should be swept from sidewalks and steps.
  • Restrain pets so they do not inadvertently jump on or bite a trick-or-treater.

Halloween scarecrows in Edmonds

Monday, October 30, 2017

Edmonds Historical Museum sponsors a scarecrow competition every year, for businesses and residents, displaying charming and creative scarecrows in front of their businesses and homes.

The Richmond Beach Running Club has a special run every year, from scarecrow to scarecrow, trying to spot them all.

Probably the most traditional one in the contest.

You are encouraged to go to their website and vote for your favorites. And if you want to drive around and look at them, there's a map.

This is the fourth year of the event, which seems to be growing in popularity.
