A room full of colorful activities and swirling dancers - Dia de los Muertos in Shoreline

Tuesday, November 7, 2023

ShoreLake Arts and the City of Shoreline celebrated Dia de los Muertos at the Spartan Gym on Thursday, November 2, 2023.

The traditional Ofrenda with remembrances of relatives who have passed on was displayed against a wall.

Half of the Spartan Gym was filled with long tables covered in bright paper. And every table had a colorful craft project just waiting to be glued or assembled.

Volunteers worked with children, who were giddy with delight.

Adults were welcome to try the craft of their choice - this table had the makings of paper flowers.

The colorful projects were irresistible

A face painting station offered personal decorations to attendees and a food truck had dinner selections.

And then the dancers came in.

Swirling skirts, joyful music, bright colors. They were a party unto themselves.

The youngest dancers and the junior troupe were delightful to watch.

Music, colorful dresses, dance performances. It was a delightful party atmosphere.

Cartoon by Whitney Potter: Dia de los Muertos

The Day of the Dead (Spanish: el Día de Muertos or el Día de los Muertos)[2][3] is a holiday traditionally celebrated on November 1 and 2, though other days, such as October 31 or November 6, may be included depending on the locality.[4][5][6]

It is widely observed in Mexico, where it largely developed, and is also observed in other places, especially by people of Mexican heritage.

Although related to the simultaneous Christian remembrances for Hallowtide,[1] it has a much less solemn tone and is portrayed as a holiday of joyful celebration rather than mourning.[7]

Some argue that there are Indigenous Mexican or ancient Aztec influences that account for the custom, and it has become a way to remember those forebears of Mexican culture. The multi-day holiday involves family and friends gathering to pay respects and to remember friends and family members who have died. These celebrations can take a humorous tone, as celebrants remember funny events and anecdotes about the departed.[8]

Traditions connected with the holiday include honoring the deceased using calaveras and marigold flowers known as cempazúchitl, building home altars called ofrendas with the favorite foods and beverages of the departed, and visiting graves with these items as gifts for the deceased.[9]

The celebration is not solely focused on the dead, as it is also common to give gifts to friends such as candy sugar skulls, to share traditional pan de muerto with family and friends, and to write light-hearted and often irreverent verses in the form of mock epitaphs dedicated to living friends and acquaintances, a literary form known as calaveras literarias.[10]

UWMed: The science of scares: what makes us love fear

Tuesday, October 31, 2023

Boo!

Nothing is quite as scary-fun as Halloween. People of all ages seek thrills and chills — and a little sugar, too — dressing up like vampires, zombies and demented ax murderers. But what, exactly, happens in our brains and bodies when we play with fear?

It turns out our obsession has primordial origins in the fight-flight-or-freeze reflex, and lives in the same part of our brain as love and happiness. While we’re no longer running from sabertooth tigers, our fear responses are still hard-wired into the way we see the world.

We’re also chasing a chemical high, not unlike that sugar rush so many kids pursue each Oct. 31.

“Those adrenaline and dopamine releases that we get, they're also linked to pleasure centers in the brain,” said Michele Bedard-Gilligan, an associate professor in the University of Washington School of Medicine’s department of psychiatry and behavioral sciences.
“For many of us, that feels fun and exciting to kind of have that type of reaction, particularly when it's happening in a space that we know is actually not objectively dangerous.

Spooky Moon and Halloween Poem

Hallowe’en Poem

It’s time again to celebrate
With creatures knocking at my gate,
Wanting mostly things to eat,
Their sacks hang nearly to their feet!

Watch out there! Here comes a spook!
Collecting piles of gobbledegook.
Candy, cake, gum and such …
Can he really eat that much?

I hope the creatures won’t want more.
After all, this isn’t a store (!)
The only other thing to show ‘em
Is the annual Hallowe’en poem.

Yours scarily, Witchie Westberg

What will happen when the widow sends the scarecrow into town to embarrass the mayor? Join us to find out!
