Ramsden sisters lead T-Bird gymnastics at Bainbridge meet

Ramsden sisters lead T-Bird gymnastics

Shorewood took 4th place with a score of 119.95 behind 1st place Bainbridge 151.1, 2nd place Holy Names 129.85 and Shorecrest 125.00; and the Shorewood coach Susan Riley could not have been more proud of the team’s performance.

Why is the coach proud of how the team performed…while getting 4th place? “We were not at full strength, as we were missing four of our top six gymnasts from the lineup. Many of the gymnasts, stepped outside their comfort zone and competed on events for the first time.” Riley said.

The Ramsden sisters, Emily and Morgan were the only Shorewood Varsity gymnasts that competed at the meet. There are six gymnasts on the varsity squad, of those six, one is out with an injury; while three were in Hawaii to perform, as members of the Shorewood Flag team. “Emily and Morgan performed very well and even more importantly, they encouraged the less experienced  gymnasts to do their best and have fun, what more could a coach ask for” Riley stated.

When all the scores were tallied, Shorewood was just 5 points behind Shorecrest and less than 10 points behind Holy Names. “Given that we were not at full strength, and were not far behind the other teams, it is encouraging that Shorewood will have a great showing at the end of the season.” Riley said.

Morgan Ramsden was Shorewood’s top All-Around, placing 9th on Vault, 8th on Beam, 8th on Floor and 8th in the All Around. Emily Ramden placed 7th on Floor and 11th in the All-Around. Sophie Sando of Shorewood placed 7th on Beam.

Captains, Senior Emily Ramsden, Junior Stephanie Spee, and Sophomore Diana Catinas will help in rebuilding this year’s team after losing four top performers to graduation. Shorewood Gymnastic qualified to the State meet for the first time in 16 years and took 7th place last season.

“A lot of varsity spots opened up this year after we graduated so many great gymnasts. “In some respects we are rebuilding our team.” said Head Coach Susan Riley. “However, we have many gymnasts that have gained experience and confidence over the last couple years. These gymnasts will be our strong foundation, setting a great example of sportsmanship and leadership for this year’s team.”

Catinas, Spee and Junior Juliet Fisher are the top all-around returners from last season. Catinas and Fisher were named to the Wesco All League First Team last year. Spee and E. Ramsden were named to the Wesco All League Second Team. Also returning from last year’s State team is Sophomore Morgan Ramsden. “Morgan is starting the season off very strong, and I predict she will a key competitor this season” Coach Riley stated.

New to this year’s team is Senior Amanda Tran. Tran comes to the team after years of training Rhythmic Gymnastics. Tran finished off her Rhythmic Gymnastics career after competing as a member of both the Junior and Senior National Teams.

“Although it has been a long time since she trained all the events, Amanda is quickly regaining skills that she has not done in 9+years.” Coach Riley said. “Amanda will be a strong competitor and I expect she will be turning some heads when competing on Floor Exercise.”

Rounding out this year Varsity team is Freshmen Haley Day and Emily Merry as well as Sophomores Elly Anderson and Sophie Sando.

Shorewood’s first meet will be help at Cascade Elite Gymnastics in Mountlake Terrace on Saturday December 1 at 5pm.

Shorewood girls put the right pieces together to achieve team goal set amidst early-season potential

Shorewood gymnasts walked into the 2A/3A District meet on Saturday February 11 ready to turn heads and walk away proud of all they have accomplished this season. “Our girls prepared the entire season for this one chance to go to State as a team,” said Coach Susan Riley. “We came into the meet with a four point deficit from the other teams, and we knew we would have to have all the pieces to the puzzle to take one of the top three team spots that would advance us to the State meet.” Shorewood Gymnastics has not advanced to the State meet as a team in 16 years.

“We were all hopeful and very optimistic that we would have our best meet. Everyone was extremely excited to compete, but we were also nervous,” Co-Captain Katerina Alexander stated. “Before we marched in, we stood in a circle and everyone said something positive so that we could go out, do our best and have fun.”

Consistency was the key for Shorewood’s third place finish and season high score of a 149.175, which put them behind first place Bainbridge: 158.275 and second place Mount Si: 158.125.

The girls were huddled together in a giant team hug as the final team standings were announced. Knowing the top three teams would advance to State, the girls screamed when their third place finish was announced; they knew the last piece of the puzzle was in place…they were going to state as a team.

“We were sitting there, hopeful that we would be going to State as a team, however we knew there were a lot of great teams competing” Co-Captain Kyla Riley said. “When they announced the fifth place team, we were more than a little excited. Then, when they announced the fourth place team, we knew that all of our hard work this season had paid off and we were not able to hold in our excitement…Standing on the podium brought tears to our eyes. The thought that we were going to represent our school at State was overwhelming.”

“It really took a team effort” coach Riley said. “If any one of this team had been sick, injured, or did not give 110%, we would not be moving on. No one member was more important than another. Whether they competed as an All Around or were an alternate, they all had an important role in helping this team move on to State!”

Sophomore Juliet Fisher won the All Around competition on Saturday January 28 at Cascade Elite Gymnastics with a 29.35. Fisher also tied for 3rd on Vault, 4th on Bars, 2nd Beam and 5th on Floor.

Shorewood finished with a season high 146.175, in front of Shorecrest 126.25, Squalicum 112.275 and Bellingham 92.175.

“The girls have all been working to add difficulty to their routines to help increase the overall score.” Coach Riley said. “What is nice about our team is that they are very supportive of each other. We have six strong on each event and if one of the girls is having an off day, the others are there to pick each other up.”

Other top performances from Senior Katie Holloway 1st on Vault, 3rd on Bars, and 1st on Floor. Sophomore, Stephanie Spee placed 2nd in the All Around, tied for 3rd on Vault, 3rd on Beam and 2nd on Floor. Senior Yvonne Chan placed 1st on Beam.

Two Shorewood gymnasts receive local scholarship

Monday, December 12, 2011

Dick and Diane Chapman, parents of Shorewood Alumnus Doriane Chapman (Gunnels) have been supportive of high school gymnastics since their daughter started at Shorewood in 1992. Over the last 19 years their support has not wavered.

Shorewood Gymnastics Coach Susan Riley wanted to honor the Chapmans for their long time support of the Shorewood Gymnastics program by naming a scholarship after them. Dick and Diane were honored and in turn wanted to help fund the scholarship.

Kyla Riley and Kristie Wong

This year two Shorewood gymnasts, Seniors Kyla Riley and Kristie Wong were selected to receive the first annual Dick and Diane Chapman-Shorewood Gymnastics Senior Scholarship. Riley and Wong will each receive $500 towards their college education, donated by the Chapmans.

Sadly, Dick passed away on November 25, 2011 and was not able to take part in the selection of this year’s winners. Diane and Doriane made the selection in Dick’s honor.

The goal of the scholarship is to honor Shorewood senior gymnasts that display leadership, school athletic involvement and character.

Kyla Riley was selected for her leadership (three years gymnastics captain, 1 year diving captain), school athletic involvement (four years gymnastics, four years diving and two years Drill Team), and her character as explained by Shorewood Math Teacher Corrie Crowder in her letter of recommendation for Kyla.
“For a painfully long time, Kyla had health issues that made it difficult for her to come to school. Amazingly, Kyla stayed on top of her academics and athletics…During this time she demonstrated extraordinary strength of character and determination. She always worked hard and never gave up.” Kyla plans to study Kinesiology at Vangaurd University.
Kristie Wong was selected for her leadership (cheer captain), school athletic involvement (four years gymnastics, two years cheer), working two jobs, and her character as described by Shorewood Science Teacher Nathan Davis in his letter of recommendation for Kristie.
“Kristie’s academic’s school involvement and interpersonal skills will assure her success in life.”
Kristie hopes to attend the University of Washington and study Medicine.

High Hopes for experienced Shorewood gymnastics team

Sunday, November 27, 2011

Led by two senior co-captains, Kyla Riley (third year captain) and Kat Alexander, the 2011-2012 girls gymnastics team is looking to be the strongest at Shorewood in many years. A few talented newcomers join a cast of experienced returners that were the 2010/2011 WESCO 3A Gymnastics Champions. Shorewood gymnastics opens the season with high hopes, and a lot of promise.

Experience leads this years’ team. Kyla Riley has been a strong All Around competitor for Shorewood since her freshman year, earning numerous honors along the way, including: three time 1st Team All Wesco honors and All American Honorable Mention.

Senior Yvonne Chan, Sophomore Juliet Fisher, and Sophomore Stephanie Spee were named to the 2011 2nd Team All Wesco. Add to the success of the returners is some new talent. Freshman Diana Catinas, Freshman Morgan Ramsden, and Senior Katie Holloway come to the team with a lot of club gymnastics experience. “All three gymnasts should add a lot to our line up this season” said head coach Susan Riley.

Shorewood’s team is rounded out by Seniors Kat Alexander, Kristie Wong, and Megan Lapham; Juniors: Kiera Strong and Emily Ramsden; Sophomores Mercedes Belka, Brianna Huntamer, Ali Jackson, and Kathryn Malchow; Freshman: Elly Anderson, Sophie Sando, and Marina Papus.

On Saturday, November 26, 2011 Shorewood gymnastics held a practice meet to get geared up for the season.
“I was very pleased with their performances this past weekend.” Coach Riley said. “Three weeks of practice to prepare for your first competition is quite difficult. Although the gymnasts only competed in one or two events, I was very impressed with their performance.”
Top Shorewood performers include Kyla Riley (Vault and Floor) Diana Catinas (Vault and Floor) Yvonne Chan (Bars and Beam), Katie Holloway (Bars and Beam), Morgan Ramsden (Vault) and Emily Ramsden (Floor).

Shorewood’s next meet is Friday December 9, 2011 at Bainbridge High School at 6:00 pm, then Saturday December 11, 2011 at Cascade Elite Gymnastics in Mountlake Terrace at 5:30 pm.
