County council approves Kohl-Welles’ amendment to keep gun stores away from schools

Thursday, July 30, 2020

Jeanne Kohl-Wells represents
Seattle District 4 on the County Council

The King County Council on Friday approved an amendment that will keep new gun stores at least 500 feet away from schools.

Councilmember Jeanne Kohl-Welles brought the amendment forward to be included in an extensive update of the Comprehensive Plan, which was approved as amended.

“The hard truth is there is little we can do at the county-level to enact thoughtful measures pertaining to firearms and gun violence because of federal and state preemptions,” Kohl-Welles said.
“But we have to be creative. When the recreational use and sale of marijuana was legalized at the state-level, we added buffer zones to help ensure children and youth would not have easy access to the drug – for their protection.
“I’m sponsoring this amendment under the same principle. If we consider it a priority to protect our kids from marijuana establishments, we should do the same for gun stores – especially considering that guns are a greater public health threat in our county.”

Any new businesses selling firearms that have open hours and signs or advertising would fall under the requirement. Businesses established before June 30 would not be impacted.

The Comprehensive Plan update includes subarea plans for six rural communities and five urban unincorporated areas, as well as several other midpoint updates to the plan. You can read a full staff report on the update HERE.

National Gun Violence Awareness Day in Shoreline June 5

about gun violence. Photo courtesy City of Shoreline

On Monday, May 18, Shoreline Mayor Will Hall proclaimed June 5, 2020, National Gun Violence Awareness Day in Shoreline

It will be a day to honor and remember all victims and survivors of gun violence, and to declare that we as a country must do more to reduce gun violence.

Mayor Hall encourages all citizens to support their local communities' efforts to prevent the tragic effects of gun violence and to honor and value human lives.

Every day, 100 Americans are killed by guns and on average there are nearly 13,000 gun homicides every year.

You are 25 times more likely to be killed with a gun in the United States than people in other high-income countries. Support for Second Amendment rights of law-abiding citizens goes hand-in-hand with keeping guns away from dangerous histories.

To help honor the more than 100 Americans whose lives are cut short and the countless survivors who are injured by shootings every day, a national coalition of organizations has designated the first Friday of June 2020 as the 6th National Gun Violence Awareness Day.

Anyone can join this campaign by pledging to Wear Orange on June 5, 2020, to help raise awareness about gun violence.

Handgun stolen from locked safe in vehicle

The King county sheriff's office  reports that earlier this week, deputies were dispatched to a theft from a vehicle in the 1100 block of N 162nd St in Shoreline.

The victim reported that unknown suspect(s) smashed their passenger-side window, pried open the center console safe, and stole a handgun.

All thefts from vehicles are troubling. Thefts involving weapons are even more concerning because of the potential for dangerous consequences.

When possible, take firearms out of your vehicle and into your home, even if you only plan to be away from your vehicle for a short period of time.

Note your firearm's make, model, and serial #, as these essential details can help in the recovery of your property in the event that it's stolen.

Sen. Jesse Salomon: Our country has a gun violence public health problem

Wednesday, February 5, 2020

State Sen. Jesse Salomon D-32
Firearms play an important role in self-defense. However, there is no question our country has a gun violence public health problem with nearly 40,000 people dying every year from gunfire.

Over a half million concealed pistol licenses (CPLs) have been issued in Washington state. Yet state law does not require any safety training prior to issuing a CPL. Safety training prior to issuing a CPL is a requirement in other states like Texas, Nebraska, and Florida, to name just a few.

I am the prime sponsor of a bill, Senate Bill 6294, that will align Washington’s laws on issuing CPLs with the common practice in over two dozen other states. A CPL applicant will need to have taken a recognized firearms safety training program within the last five years.

Course topics must include:
  • basic firearms safety;
  • firearms and children;
  • safe storage, handling and transfer;
  • suicide prevention; and
  • successful live-fire exercises.

Recognizing the role that firearms play in self-defense, the bill exempts anyone protected by a domestic violence restraining order from having to pay CPL permit fees.

The bill was voted out of committee and is awaiting a vote by the full Senate.

Sen. Jesse Salomon State Senator, 32nd Legislative District, Shoreline, NW Seattle, SW Edmonds, Woodway, part of Lynnwood and Mountlake Terrace.

Two community events to raise awareness of gun violence prevention

Friday, November 8, 2019

Community events supported by local gun violence prevention (GVP) volunteers with Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America will be held next week on Thursday, November 14, at Third Place Books in Lake Forest Park, and on Sunday, November 17, at the Edmonds Theater.

Both events are free, open to the public, and appropriate for youth and adults interested in learning more about the impact of gun violence and how to help prevent it.

Author Michelle Roehm McCann will be discussing her new book “Enough is Enough” at 7pm on November 14, 2019 at Third Place Books 17171 Bothell Way NE, Lake Forest Park. Featuring a foreword by Shannon Watts, founder of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, “Enough is Enough: How Students Can Join the Fight for Gun Safety” examines America’s gun violence issues — myths and facts, causes and perpetrators, solutions and change-makers — providing a road map for teens ready to take an active role to make real change in their community and across the nation.

Documentary film
Volunteers with the Washington Chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America and Black Lives Matter will host a free screening at the Edmonds Theater (415 Main Street, Edmonds) on November 17 of the documentary film “QUEST: A Portrait of An American Family.”

Doors open at 10am, and the film begins at 10:30am, followed by a brief panel discussion of the issues raised in the documentary.

“QUEST,” directed by Jonathan Olshefski, is an intimate, feature-length documentary film that captures ten years in the life of a black family living in North Philadelphia. Released at the Sundance Film Festival in 2017,

“QUEST” is described as a “moving portrait of the Raineys, who are raising a family while nurturing a community of hip hop artists in their home music studio.

It’s a safe place where all are welcome, but this creative sanctuary can’t always shield them from the strife that grips their neighborhood. We’re shown how gun violence directly and indirectly impacts this influential family. Epic in scope, QUEST is a vivid illumination of race and class in America, and a testament to love, healing, and hope.”

Orange the Overpass

Shoreline Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America hosted an “Orange the Overpass” event at the I-5 overpass at NE 185th St in Shoreline from 3:00 to 6:00pm under threatening skies on Friday evening.

About Wear Orange
In 2013, a small group of teens at a South Side Chicago high school asked their classmates to honor the life of their murdered friend Hadiya Pendleton by wearing orange – the color hunters wear in the woods to protect themselves and others and a color that reflects the value of human life.

They inspired the Wear Orange campaign (wearorange.org), which is led by a broad-based coalition working to reduce gun violence in America. Spearheaded by Everytown for Gun Safety, the campaign asks Americans who want to save lives from gun violence to do one simple thing on June 7, National Gun Violence Awareness Day: Wear Orange.

Thousands of Americans will also participate in events during the Wear Orange weekend on June 8 and 9 with nationwide days of action. Those who wear orange promise to honor the lives of Americans stolen by gun violence, to help keep firearms out of dangerous hands and to protect our children from gun violence. Orange is the symbol of the gun violence prevention movement, and is used by activists all over the country to raise awareness.

Volunteers from the Shoreline local group of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America hosted an “Orange the Overpass” event at the I-5 overpass at NE 185th St in Shoreline from 3:00 to 6:00pm on Friday evening.

On Saturday morning, June 8, there will be a “Clean Up the Underpass” event starting at 10:00am at Ronald Bog Park, N 175th and Meridian. Go to wearorange.org and put in zip code 98155 for further details.

On Sunday, June 9, volunteers from the Shoreline local group will join volunteers with the Washington chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, a part of Everytown for Gun Safety, to host a Wear Orange rally and a walk over the I-90 bridge in Seattle to honor the lives of those affected by gun violence and elevate gun violence prevention efforts nationwide.

Gun violence prevention groups from across the Puget Sound region are supporting partners of this Wear Orange event.

Orange is the color that Hadiya Pendleton’s friends wore in her honor after she was shot and killed in Chicago at the age of 15 — just one week after performing in President Obama’s second inaugural parade in 2013. Orange honors the 100 lives cut short and the hundreds more wounded by gun violence every day — and demands action.

Remembrance event for Sandy Hook

Sunday, December 9, 2018

Volunteers with the Shoreline, Bothell/Mill Creek, and Edmonds local groups of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, part of Everytownfor Gun Safety, will gather on Saturday, December 15, 2018 with community members for an event to honor the six-year mark of the Sandy Hook School shooting, which took the lives of 20 children and six educators.

The event is one of nearly 100 across the country commemorating the Sandy Hook six-year mark and asking lawmakers to act to prevent gun violence.

In the six years since Sandy Hook, Moms Demand Action volunteers, along with survivors of gun violence and other gun violence prevention advocates, have fought hard – and successfully – to change America’s lax gun laws, but much more must be done. Nearly 100 Americans are shot and killed every day, and hundreds more are wounded.

Volunteers with local groups in the Seattle area will hold an event honoring victims and survivors of gun violence in our communities.

The event will include a slideshow in remembrance of gun violence victims in our local communities. Survivors are invited to send photos of loved ones to be included in this tribute to this email

Organizers are asking for donations of non-perishable food items for the Hunger Intervention Program, whose leader was recently honored by NUHSA (see previous article).

Specified needs include: canned tuna and chicken, Tasty Bite entrée meal pouches, individual Jif peanut butter packets, and Amy’s low-sodium vegetarian soups.

Participants:

  • Volunteers with the Washington chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America.
  • Zach Elmore, member of the Everytown Survivor Network, whose sister survived the Route 91 Shooting in Las Vegas
  • Nyla Fritz, gun violence survivor and Einstein Middle School Principal

Help advance a public health agenda of common sense gun safety

Sunday, November 11, 2018

Gun violence in the form of mass shootings has once again gripped our nation in the past several weeks — to the point that there are now media stories about “compassion fatigue.”

There is also an ongoing epidemic of other forms of gun violence: suicide and unintentional shootings.

Here in Washington, voters just passed an initiative that we hope will save lives without compromising Constitutional rights.

If you’re interested in learning more about how you can help advance a public health agenda of common sense gun safety, think about joining MOMS DEMAND ACTION FOR GUN SENSE IN AMERICA.

There is an informational meeting at the Shoreline Library (345 NE 175th St.) on Wednesday, November 14th at 7:00pm for those interested in learning more about the work that MOMS DEMAND ACTION is doing locally and across the nation. You need not be a mom to get involved!
