Jackson Park golf course: affordable and fun

Wednesday, October 23, 2013

Jackson Park in NE Seattle

By Zeth Peterka, Shoreline, age 13

This article is about a great, local public golf course that is affordable and fun. Jackson Park Golf Course in north Seattle has a par 70, 18 hole golf course and an executive short nine. The short nine is fun, challenging and is open all year around. The short nine has tees that are all mats, tree lined fairways, and no trouble. The 18 is open all year around and is also very fun and challenging. The tees are all grass on the 18. Bunkers and water come into play on the front and the back nine, and many of the fairways are undulated so you rarely have a flat lie. The 18 has tree lined fairways and good greens that are pretty sloped on some holes.

Jackson has many things to offer. It has a putting green, a chipping green, pro shop, restaurant, pull carts, gas carts, club rentals, lessons, snack bar, beer, wine, memberships, and a soon to be driving range. They also have junior camps available for all levels. Jackson has a new gravel walking path that perimeters the 18 and the executive 9. Jackson is also very cool because kids from 8-17 can play free every day after 3 pm if you print out the free golf coupon on their website.

Hole #6 at Jackson Park golf course

On their website, they also have other information like their score card for the 9 and the 18 hole, hours, contact info, junior golf camp sign up, rates, group events, clubs, and tee-times.

Seattle has many other public golf courses like West Seattle Golf Course, Jefferson Park Golf Course, and Interbay par 3, driving range and golf center, that are all local and affordable.

Jackson is open all year around and stays fairly dry in the winter. I recommend this course to anyone who is looking for a great round or is just looking to practice their short game on their great pitching and putting greens.

Attention golfers: Sound Transit begins planning for US Open in 2015

Tuesday, June 25, 2013

Joni Earl, CEO Corner

I was pleased to join Pat McCarthy, Pierce County Executive and Sound Transit Board Chair, and other local officials last week for a behind-the-scenes look at the U.S. Open golf championship at Merion Golf Club near Philadelphia.

We were in Pennsylvania to learn all we could in preparation for the 2015 U.S. Open, which is being held at Chambers Bay in the City of University Place near Tacoma.

The U.S. Open at Chambers Bay is expected to bring in an estimated 50,000 people a day during the week of the tournament. The trip last week gave us a chance to better understand the logistical challenges and how they were handled.

Thanks to the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) leadership for giving us a tour of their services and showing us their planning for the U.S. Open. Between weather challenges, huge crowds and various issues that arose, they did a fabulous job. We learned a great deal that will help us, along with the USGA, in planning and preparing for Chambers Bay.

Shorewood grad receives scholarship from Northwest Golf Media Association

Sunday, September 9, 2012

Pete Treperinas
Shorewood grad
Northwest Golf Media Association Announces Recipient of Annual Scholarship; University of Washington Student Selected

Pete Treperinas, a senior-to-be at the University of Washington, has been selected as the recipient of the first NWGMA Scholarship, which will be given annually by the Northwest Golf Media Association.

Treperinas, a 21-year-old journalism major interested in a career in sports journalism, is receiving $2,500 from the NWGMA. He is a graduate of Shorewood High School. Treperinas will be formally given the scholarship at the NWGMA banquet being held at Broadmoor Golf Club in Seattle on October 8.

The scholarship is open to all students who are entering their senior year at a Northwest college or university and who have demonstrated an interest and ability in sports journalism. The scholarship is posted at universities in Oregon, Idaho, British Columbia and Washington.

Jeff Shelley, co-founder of the NWGMA and longtime editorial director for Cybergolf, said, “When Bob Spiwak and I founded the NWGMA in 1995, one of my goals was to take the organization to a place where we could justify financially – through member dues and contributions – the creation of an annual scholarship for college students interested in writing about golf after graduation. Though it took 17 years, awarding our first NWGMA Scholarship to Pete is personally very satisfying.”

Treperinas is on schedule to graduate next June. He attended summer school after spending spring in Greece as an exchange student.

“My Greek heritage is a big part of my life,” said Treperinas, whose growing-up years included Greek folk dancing and Greek church activities. He goes by the first name of Pete, but his given name is Panayiotis (Pana-YO-teez).

NWGMA President Tom Cade said, "Pete got the nod over some other strong applicants. One thing that caught the eye of our committee was his involvement in golf, particularly as the two-year captain of his high school team. He obviously is someone who knows and enjoys the game and he has done well in his college studies and as a sportswriter for the UW Daily and in internships at 710 KIRO (ESPN's Seattle affiliate station) and Seattlepi.com.”

Like most journalism students, Treperinas said he can't predict if he will wind up working for a newspaper, magazine, website, radio station or other media outlet. What he is sure about is that the scholarship money will be helpful in his final year of college. “I'll definitely put it to good use,” he said.

“This is the first year we've given a scholarship,” said Cade. “Only students entering their final year of college are eligible because we want to help someone definitely interested in media get to the finish line, not someone experimenting with different majors or unsure what he or she wants to do. We see the scholarship as part of our organization's mission to encourage and assist media coverage of golf in the Northwest and we're pleased to give it to Pete.”

The majority of funding for the NWGMA Scholarship was arranged by NWGMA members John Tipping and Owen Hoskinson, who own and operate the Seattle Golf & Travel Show and the Vancouver (B.C.) Golf & Travel Show. They donated the proceeds from the silent auction at their Seattle show to the scholarship. “Their generous donation has made this scholarship possible,” said Cade.

The Northwest Golf Media Association consists of over 125 golf media and industry professionals in Oregon, Idaho, British Columbia and Washington. It is a 501c7 non-profit organization that was founded in 1995 to assist the coverage of golf in the region. More information on the NWGMA or the NWGMA Scholarship. For information about the banquet on October 8, call 206-890-5339.

Golf Tournament to raise money for brain cancer research

Friday, August 24, 2012

The Pink Polka Dots (PPD) Junior Guild is proud to announce the fifth annual Sydney Coxon Memorial golf tournament and silent auction/dinner on Saturday September 8, 2012, at Legion Memorial Golf Course in Everett.

Sponsored by Integrated Technologies, Inc. (Intec), all proceeds from the event support brain tumor research at Seattle Children’s and the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center.

PPD was founded by three now-teenaged classmates, in memory of their friend Sydney Coxon who died at age eleven of a brain tumor. As a Seattle Children’s Hospital Junior Guild, the majority of members are teens or younger.

Intec, an Everett-based engineering design and manufacturing company, is managed by Sydney’s family, who sponsor the event because they and the Pink Polka Dots have a shared goal.

“No one should have to go through what Sydney’s family went through,” says guild co-founder Kelsey Josund. “We want to prevent any other family, child, or community from being affected by a brain tumor.”

Since its founding in 2006, PPD has raised more than $400,000 for brain cancer researcher Dr. Jim Olson and his lab. Dr. Olson’s lab is responsible for groundbreaking research into tumor detection, removal, and treatment, including “tumor paint” (featured in Time Magazine, July 19, 2007).

The event is open to the public and direct donations are also welcomed to help in the fight against brain cancers. The cost is $135 for golfing and the buffet dinner, or $65 for just dinner. Both options include the auction in the evening. Register online

All donations received for the event will be matched dollar-for-dollar by the Coxon Family Foundation.
