Goats at Saltwater Park

Sunday, July 2, 2017

Taking a break
Over the next six months, the City of Shoreline will employ goats periodically to help manage vegetation at Richmond Beach Saltwater Park.

The animals will primarily work the bioswales near the bottom parking lot.

Using goats allows for a lower environmental impact while keeping costs under control.

According to Ed Portnow of Earthcraft Services, the Goats will be back again in Shoreline in 2015.

He reports that all are healthy, happy and ready to eat up invasive plants.

We thank the City of Shoreline and the Shoreline community for their continued support!

For those of you with pasture land, Ed reports that he is always on the lookout for winter pasture for his goats, ideally located in Shoreline, Lake Forest, Kenmore, Bothell and Seattle (or thereabouts). If there is anyone who may have pasture available please contact him.

The goats are available for private invasive plant removal for homes, business, acreage, etc...

Last year we shared the goats with some school groups. It was a lot of fun for the goats, students and especially myself. We welcome and look forward to sharing the goats with interested school groups again in 2015. Contact Ed to make inquiries.

Goat on steep hillside

Photographer Kirstie saw the goats Friday on a very steep hillside at the SW corner of Dayton and 185th/Richmond Beach Road. Dave, who was overseeing them, showed her the huge section they'd already eaten down. They didn't mind having a stranger nearby -- they are used to people, Dave said -- and just kept on chewing the weeds.

The goats are from Earthcraft Services. The team of goats will be stationed at various public locations throughout the Shoreline community through October.

Ed Portnow of Earthcraft says, "In the past the animals become part of the community and we greatly appreciate having people keeping an eye out for their safety."

A short three minute video about the service, filmed in Shoreline, is available to view at the Earthcraft Services webpage and Facebook page.
