Pink Polka Dots Junior Guild lemonade stand raises $600 for cancer research

Tuesday, August 22, 2023

Dr. Jim Olson stopped by the PPD lemonade stand on his bike ride to thank the girls for their fundraising efforts that support the research he does in his lab on pediatric brain cancer research.

On Saturday, August 19, 2023 the Pink Polka Dots Junior Guild of Children’s Hospital had a very successful lemonade stand raising over $600 for Children’s Hospital.

Members sold lemonade and homemade cookies and cupcakes to patrons along the Burke Gilman Trail while sharing about the work that the Guild does.

The mission of the Pink Polka Dots is to raise money for pediatric brain cancer research and empower young people to recognize their own abilities and the power to change the lives of others.

Members include elementary to high school students in Lake Forest Park and they have raised over a million dollars since 2006.

The Guild welcomes new members. The Pink Polka Dots Junior Guild was founded in 2006 in memory of LFP resident, Sydney Coxon. Sydney died at age 11 after a battle of just over a year with an untreatable brainstem glioma, a rare type of brain tumor.

Thank you to all who came by the lemonade stand to support the Pink Polka Dots!

The family of a woman who survived the July 3 Mountlake Terrace townhouse fire that took the lives of her mother and sister has created a GoFundMe fundraiser on her behalf.

Jonathan and Renee Boulet, son-in-law and daughter to fire survivor Pam O’Hara, created a GoFundMe account July 4, 2023.

The account is meant to help Pam O’Hara’s basic needs, as she lost everything in the fire.

Funds raised will also assist with funeral costs for the two fire victims: Pam O’Hara’s mother Audrey O’Hara, and sister Terry O’Hara.

O’Hara’s home of 22 years caught fire, and it spread to two connecting townhomes, damaging all three.

The six residents of those households were displaced and are being assisted by Support 7 and American Red Cross.

Meet and Celebrate the Canopy Scholars Community!
Canopy Scholars Bloom Lunch
Saturday, June 3 | 11:30 AM
Innis Arden Club House
1430 NW 188th St, Shoreline

You are invited to our Bloom Lunch, where we will recognize and celebrate the Canopy Scholars community: our scholars and their families, volunteers, and supporters! It’s an opportunity to connect and learn about what makes Canopy Scholars so special.

This is not your average charity luncheon. Here’s what makes it different:
  • Our amazing YMCA partners will kick off the festivities with a fun activity.
  • We will be serving a menu inspired by the cuisine native to many of our scholars.
  • We will recognize some of the community members that have made a big impact.
  • We will honor Dr. Rose Madrid Swetman, who gave Canopy Scholars its roots.
Just as the canopy of a forest shelters and nourishes all the plants within, our organization comes together to create an environment where each of our students can bloom and flourish with tutoring, STEM, and community building programs.

We are excited to bring together the different parts of the Canopy community that help us thrive.

Join us to ensure that Canopy Scholars thrive!

Canopy Scholars* provides tutoring and STEM programs to a diverse population of Shoreline Elementary School students, prioritizing students participating in the National School Lunch Program.

A canopy is a living community of diverse types of trees growing together. They are sheltered from strong winds and storms, able to develop anchoring roots, branch into individual shapes, capture light and rain, produce leaves and seeds, and send water back into the atmosphere which creates rain.

At Canopy, we provide an environment for students to grow into their full potential as scholars through tutoring, STEM, and community building programs. We have a stellar team of tutors as diverse as our students, and we build relationships at every level – with students, parents, teachers.
  • TUTORING — Tutors work alongside students to strengthen math and reading skills and tackle homework challenges. Students receive more than 100 hours of one-on-one tutoring.
  • STEM — STEM programs help students strengthen skills in science, technology, engineering and math in a fun and creative environment.
  • COMMUNITY — A key part of Canopy is the fun community that develops between students, their parents, and their tutors as they grow to become scholars.
We invite you to join us in making a real difference in the lives of students today! Visit our website canopyscholars.org

Vision House luncheon raises almost $700,000 to fight homelessness

Friday, May 12, 2023

Pictured: John Camerer, Vision House Co-Founder; Melissa Gehrig, Executive Director; Ninevah Lowery, Jack and Jill Foundation; Geoff Tamman, Board President; Susan Camerer, Vision House Co-Founder and Presenting Sponsor – Camerer Real Estate, Windermere; Bob Goff, Author and Guest Speaker.

This past Monday, May 8, 2023 the Meydenbauer Center in Bellevue had almost 700 guests eager and attentive to consider their legacy.

The Vision House Luncheon featured speaker and New York Times bestselling author Bob Goff, who spoke on the joy of neighbors and community coming together to be a safety net - a safety net of care and support we all desperately need - especially local moms and kids at Vision House.

The goal of this event was to raise support for families experiencing homelessness in the greater Puget Sound area, and that is exactly what was done. Funds are still coming in, but so far almost $700,000 has been raised to help provide safety and healing for families.

Executive Director Melissa Gehrig shared about the continuum of care that Vision House provides for families.
“Families are in crisis and just getting them housed is not enough. We can’t just put someone in a house and expect them to be successful in keeping it.”

Gehrig shared that the Vision House program includes case management, accountability, and time with licensed mental health counselors. This strategy has enabled Vision House to have a success rate historically of 90-92% in moving families to permanent housing.

Jacob's Well in Shoreline

Vision House is a nonprofit organization providing transitional housing, childcare and supportive services to families experiencing homelessness. Since its beginning in 1990, the faith-based organization has served more than 1,400 children, women and men experiencing homelessness, each receiving the support they need for achieving independence and self-sufficiency. 90% of participants who complete the program move into permanent housing.

Headquartered in Renton, the agency is debt-free, owning and operating 46 units of housing and two childcare facilities in Renton and Shoreline (Jacob's Well); and two Diversion Centers in Renton and Burien – with a third planned for Shoreline.

Seattle Beer Week will raise funds for North Helpline

Monday, May 8, 2023

Hellbent Brewing, Watershed Pub /Kitchen, Project 9 Brewing, and local community partners have come together to organize the 6th annual Seattle Beer Week event that features Hellbent Brewing’s award-winning GateCity IPA.

GateCity, a combination of the two Seattle neighborhoods, Northgate and Lake City, celebrates the North Seattle community by raising funds for North Helpline, a food access and homelessness prevention nonprofit that’s been serving our community for over 30 years.

For the owners of Hellbent Brewing Company, community means more than just those that visit their brewery taproom. It is also their impact on the neighborhood they call home. That is why each year, they support Noth Helpline with the Gate City Project.

Join North Helpline and community partners for five community pop-ups held during Seattle Beer Week May 19th through 26, 2023.

Gate City IPA will be on tap at local bars around the city! Stay tuned to the North Helpline website page to see the full list when it’s announced in mid-May.

Events during Beer Week
  • May 19th, Fri, 6-9pm – Hellbent Launch Party (21+)

North Helpline serves the local community through two food banks, a home grocery delivery program, and direct financial assistance for rent and utilities.

SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) benefits were cut in March 2023, affecting over 500,000 households in Washington who will lose a total of about $95 million a month in food assistance. It is essential that we support local organizations like North Helpline that are working to address this “Hunger Cliff.”

ShoreLake Arts Gallery and "Cranes for Peace" fundraising campaign to End Violence Against Asian Americans Pacific Islanders

Monday, April 17, 2023

Cranes for Peace by Fay Lim

Combating the continuing attacks against Asian Americans Pacific Islanders (AAPI), the ShoreLake Arts Gallery located in Lake Forest Park, WA is joining Casion Jewelry in Bothell in the “Cranes for Peace” fundraising campaign.

They will celebrate the upcoming AAPI Heritage Month in May by carrying the fundraiser’s Washi Origami Crane earrings for purchase.

“With the upcoming annual AAPI Heritage Month celebration in May, I’m excited to have a new partner - the ShoreLake Arts Gallery, join us in this worthy cause as we use art to create awareness, promote peace, and stop the ongoing harassment and violence against AAPI individuals and communities,” Casion Jewelry founder and designer Fay Lim said.

“This partnership expands our outreach in sharing our message of peace and to inspire more people to support ending the violence and hatred.”

The “Cranes for Peace” fundraising campaign offers the purchase of Washi Origami Crane earrings in which a portion of each purchase will be donated to Stop AAPI Hate

This organization is a collaboration by the Asian Pacific Policy and Planning Council, Chinese for Affirmative Action, and the Asian American Studies Department at San Francisco State University.

The center tracks and reports incidents of hate, violence, harassment, and discrimination as well as provides translation services, advocacy, and more.

“Since its inception, we have believed in the value of amplifying the voices of our culturally rich community through the arts,” said ShoreLake Arts Gallery Director Lisa Palmatier.
“We’re happy to join Casion Jewelry and our fellow arts organizations in promoting equity through the arts.”

The Asian tradition of 1,000 paper cranes represents granting a special wish, happiness, long life, and peace. Using “Washi” or traditional Japanese paper that is processed by hand and made in the traditional manner; these cranes are also treated to prevent UV fading and are water resistant. Then each pair of earrings are accessorized with complimentary beads.

Since May 2021, the “Cranes for Peace” campaign with the support of its partners have donated $3,000.

The Washi Origami Crane earrings are available in the ShoreLake Arts Gallery located in the Town Center at Lake Forest Park, 17171 Bothell Way NE, Lake Forest Park, WA 98155 on the lower lobby.
