A GoFundMe site has been set up for the family of a local mother killed in a three vehicle collision at N 185th and Linden in Shoreline Tuesday evening, November 16, 2021. Her two young girls were in the vehicle and are in the hospital recovering from injuries suffered in the collision.

Following is part of the GoFundMe statement and here is the link for the full statement and donations.

"With an extremely broken heart we regret to update all who have been touched by Diane, that on the evening of November 16, as Diane was taking her daughter Addison to soccer, the unimaginable happened. We lost Diane in a tragic car accident and Addison and Reagan continue to recover from injuries both physically and mentally.

"With your donation the family will have the means to memorialize and celebrate Diane’s life while also having the financial support to tackle the future expenses to raising and caring for two young children.

"Please remember to keep (her husband) Scott, Addison, and Reagan and their extended family and friends in your thoughts and prayers. And, live your life with kindness and gratitude each and every day, because you simply do not know when it may be your last."

Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Senior Center Kupuna Hula Group helping support the Holiday Bazaar Friday - Saturday

Wednesday, October 20, 2021

Aloha Neighbors!

The Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Senior Center Kupuna Hula Group is delighted to be able to help make the 2021 Holiday Bazaar Silent Auction a success.

The Kupunas have been meeting in parks during the summer. Here they show some of the treasures they are donating to the Senior Center Holiday Bazaar this weekend.
 .
This group of kupuna (elders) have been meeting throughout this papule (crazy!) time via Zoom while continuing to support the center in ways that they can. In the summer, the group had in-person hula at a local park, wearing masks and keeping distance from one another, while enjoying getting to dance together once again!

While dancing on a cooler September day it was decided that they wanted to help the Holiday Bazaar silent auction by donating items for children since one member said she had so many new kids’ things in her closet.

You can bid on these at the Silent Auction this Saturday and Sunday at the Senior Center

So, it was decided to call the collective donations Treasures from Tutu’s (grandmother’s) Closet!

During the Holiday Bazaar, October 22 - 23, Friday and Saturday, check out the treasures:
  • Outdoor Fun for Keikis (young children),
  • Game Night for your Ohana (family),
  • Craft items,
  • Books by local authors and so much more designed for a wide range of ages.

Delivering the toys and books to the Senior Center for this weekend's event

In a snap! Holiday shopping done for every child in your family!

Mele Kalikimaka me ka Hau’oli Makahiki hou (Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!) from the Kupunas.

The Senior Center is located in the southernmost building of the Shoreline Center, 18560 1st Ave NE. The Holiday Bazaar is this Friday and Saturday, October 22-23, 2021 from 10am to 4pm.

Besides the Silent Auction there will be a bake sale, handcrafted items for sale, a raffle, and holiday decor for sale.

Correction: the Bazaar is Friday and Saturday, October 22-23

4-Corners.org Hopelink Fundraising Drive

Thursday, October 14, 2021

4-Corners.org continues its fund-raising drive to fill Hopelink’s shelves and help end hunger in Shoreline. Our goal is $10,000 – and generous friends have already contributed $5,365. Please give generously to push us over the top – and beyond.

https://tinyurl.com/4C4Hopelink

The End Family Hunger Campaign supports Hopelink to help families in need of food and other resources. Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, thousands of families in our community have had their lives turned upside down. Many continue to struggle.

Every day, members of our community visit food banks for nutritious food for their families. At Hopelink, they also receive a renewed sense of hope, knowing they are not alone.

Many thanks to the many who have donated so far.

Since 2014, the 4-Corners neighborhoods in Shoreline have collected over 3 ½ tons of food during our annual Hopelink Food Drives at our local QFC.

During the pandemic we’ve had to switch gears and go digital. Hopelink actually gets more benefit from dollars than it does from food donations. They can buy exactly what they need and there is no waste. They can buy in bulk and receive discounts that we cannot. There is no need for a list of items needed. Cash works and this is a safe, no contact way for you to help. Please join us in this effort to defeat hunger.

https://tinyurl.com/4C4Hopelink

Please, click the link and give today!

4-Corners.org is a 503(c)3 and a collaboration of the four neighborhoods whose corners meet at Richmond Beach Road and 8th Ave NW: Hillwood Neighborhood Association, Richmond Beach Community Association. Innis Arden Neighborhood, and Richmond Highlands Neighborhood Association. 4-Corners' mission is to build community and support the neighborhoods.

Kruckeberg meets its fundraising goal

Friday, October 8, 2021

Last week, (see previous article) the Kruckeberg Botanic Garden reported that their annual fundraiser had fallen short of goal and asked the community if they could help.

The community stepped up. Here's the letter from Joseph Abken, Executive Director, Kruckeberg Botanic Garden.

Earthcorps created this pathway at Kruckeberg. Photo courtesy KBG

To our community,

Last week we asked you to help us get to our Fund-a-Need goal of $30,000 for education and programs at the Kruckeberg Botanic Garden. You humbled us with your response and got us over the line. Our overall goal for the Garden Party fundraiser was $60,000. I’m pleased to say that we met our goal at $61,765. This is the most we have raised in Garden Party history or at least for the seven years of data that I have.

This fundraiser is significant for us in several ways. Our role at the garden is all-encompassing. We are the caretakers, administrators, and educators. We raise most of the income needed to perform these roles, Garden Party being just one of the avenues to achieve this. Nursery sales account for about 20% of our revenue.

Memberships and donations are also significant sources. And finally, our annual contract with the City of Shoreline gives us another $40,000. In the last few years, programs and education have grown in demand and have contributed more.

The operational budget does limit staffing at the garden. We have a full-time director, a part-time educator, and three part-time horticultural staff. As a paid staff, we do not have paid benefits outside of vacation and sick leave. Medical and dental benefits, as well as retirement packages, are outside our current capacity to support.

This year the foundation is committed to focusing on three goals: financial improvements, educational programs, and people (staff, board members, and volunteers). Through financial improvement, we can facilitate the other two goals more significantly. Already you have impacted the capacity of education this coming year with your generosity and support.

Our time and resource demands have expanded as the garden grows in popularity with visitation, growth in programs, and onsite events. Our budgetary constraints, however, continue to be what they are. Therefore, financial growth and stability are more important than ever.

Over the next year, we will make plans and goals for the future of the foundation. Through dedicated and hardworking board members, staff, and volunteers, I know that we are on our way to making meaningful improvements for the foundation and the garden.

Thank you again for your support. If you would like to join us and help contribute, please consider applying to our Board of Directors, sign up for volunteering, or donate. Contact Joe Abken at joe@kruckeberg.org and visit our website at kruckeberg.org

Sincerely,

Joseph Abken
Executive Director, Kruckeberg Botanic Garden

LFP Police Department’s Pink Patch Project for Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Thursday, October 7, 2021

The Pink Patch Project is an innovative public awareness campaign to bring attention to the fight against breast cancer and to support breast cancer research organizations in combating this devastating disease.

Agencies have partnered together to combat breast cancer by raising public awareness about the importance of early detection in the fight against the disease and to raise funds for breast cancer research and treatment.

In addition to public education efforts, the Lake Forest Park Police Department has the added goal of raising funds from the sale of Pink Patch Project patches and other items to go directly to fund the research, treatment and education needed to help find a cure.

“The program centers on vibrant pink versions of the public safety employee's uniform patch. These bright pink patches have been specially designed by each participating agency specifically for their Pink Patch Project participation.
"Public safety employees at each of the participating agencies wear their pink patches on their regular duty uniforms each year for the entire month of October during “Breast Cancer Awareness Month.”

The patches are intended to stimulate conversation with the community and to encourage public awareness about the importance of early detection in the ongoing fight against this disease.

Patches and pins are for sale at the Lake Forest Park Police Department window during October. Contact Lt. Lehman with any questions.

Mercy Haub's cancer fundraiser garners $4,000 icing 'winners'

Thursday, September 30, 2021

This student was prepared for icing

If you were at the Shorewood football game on Friday, you likely noticed some people getting buckets of ice poured over them.

That was all part of an “icing” fundraiser organized by Mercy Haub, with support of the Shorewood Interact Club, to support the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society in honor of Blood Cancer and Pediatric Cancer Awareness Month.

In total, over $4,000 was raised during the weeklong fundraiser involving students and staff voting on who should be “iced” during the football game.

This is not the first time Mercy has helped raise a substantial amount of money to support leukemia and lymphoma research and support. Prior to her own cancer diagnosis last fall, Mercy led a team that raised $32,000 last year. As a part of a commitment she made to her fundraising team if they met their goal, Mercy then shaved her head and donated it to Wigs for Kids.

Just weeks after that fundraiser, Mercy was diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma herself. Thanks to the same organizations and research she had helped raise money for in the past, Mercy successfully completed her chemotherapy in March.

You can read more about Mercy’s incredible journey and generous spirit in this Seattle Children's newsletter article https://pulse.seattlechildrens.org/community-gathers-to.../.

Kruckeberg fundraiser falls short - can you help?

Wednesday, September 29, 2021

Kruckeberg walking tour photo by Wayne Pridemore

The Kruckeberg Botanic Garden Foundation held its annual fundraiser September 26, 2021 at The Lodge at St Edwards Park in the newly renovated historic art deco building.

This year, garden friends gathered to reconnect and contribute to KBG operations and a specific FUND-A-NEED goal to raise $30,000 to increase educational programming at the Garden.

This past year we were so grateful for easy access to nature that nurtures body and spirit.

To ensure that nature is protected now and preserved for the future, we plan to expand programming for children and adults.

We raised $26,120 on Sunday but there is still time for those who missed this opportunity to donate to this FUND-A-NEED at  https://www.kruckeberg.org/donate/

Shorewood cancer survivor gives back with "icing" fundraiser

Tuesday, September 21, 2021

Mercy Haub, a senior at Shorewood, recently finished up treatment for lymphoma. As a teen blood cancer survivor, September, or Pediatric Cancer and Blood Cancer Awareness Month, means a lot to her.

Mercy Haub today, six months after the end of her cancer treatments

Freeze Cancer in Its Tracks!

Mercy, along with the SW Interact club, is hosting this fundraiser with 100% of profits going to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Interact is a high school service club associated with Rotary.

Mercy Haub six months ago during treatment for cancer

To try and improve the fact that only 3.8% of government funding for cancer goes to pediatric cancer, as well as to invest in the fact that the majority of discoveries with blood cancer are applicable to solid tumor cancer, she, along with Shorewood High School Interact Club, is running a fundraiser.

There are five representatives from each class plus five teachers who are will to be iced at the Shorewood football game on Friday, September 24, 2021.

But only one from each class and one teacher will actually have the honor!

Voting will be with money and the nominees who get the most donations in their names will get the ice!

It’s really easy to participate and every dollar counts.
Please spread the word and donate so we can all help kick cancer’s butt together! We can’t wait to see who is getting iced!

Czebo's Challenge: Lake Forest Park police officer's personal fundraiser for Children's Hospital

Saturday, September 4, 2021

LFP Officer Jason Czebotar is
raising money for Seattle Children's
Lake Forest Park Police officer Jason Czebotar had the idea of completing 100 miles (at least) in the month of October by running, hiking, and walking while raising money for Seattle Children's Hospital.

In addition to having people follow my progress and pledge to donate, I am hoping to inspire others to run/hike/walk the 100 miles in a virtual "Fun Run" challenge.

Follow along and track his progress on the Lake Forest Park PD Instagram and Facebook.

I want to make a positive difference in the lives of children and families that are going through some of the most difficult times imaginable. With your help we will.  Every little bit will help me reach my goal.

Third Place Commons Benefit Night at the Lake Forest Bar and Grill on July 7th

Tuesday, June 29, 2021

The Lake Forest Bar and Grill will host a benefit night for Third Place Commons on Wednesday, July 7, 2021 from 5-9pm.

When you dine and drink from 5-9pm, 20% of proceeds will be donated to Third Place Commons and two of its key programs, the Lake Forest Park Farmers Market and the Market Bucks food assistance program.

Third Place Commons has been actively serving the community with a wide variety of virtual events over the past year – from weekly meet-ups for foreign language conversation to monthly computer Q/As and book and movie clubs, to a whole host of stand-alone lectures, community conversations, and programming just for fun.

And the Lake Forest Park Farmers Market, the Commons’ flagship program, has carried on through all the challenges of the past year to provide a safe, fresh, and fabulous place for you to shop for the best locally grown and made food.

Third Place Commons also serves the community through the Market Bucks food assistance program, funded by local donors just like you. Working with local partners like Ballinger Homes, Hopelink, the Shoreline Lake Forest Park Senior Center, and local schools, Third Place Commons distributes vouchers to families and seniors facing food insecurity that allow folks to access free food at the farmers market.

Now, as the world reopens, Third Place Commons is excitedly planning to relaunch in-person programming inside the Commons so our community can connect face to face once again! (Spread the word, the Commons is now looking for a part-time Music and Events Coordinator to help make it happen.)

So spread the word and gather your friends and family for a tasty night out for a good cause! Join your Commons Community for a delicious dinner that will provide critical support to all these vital community programs on Wednesday, July 7th.

The Lake Forest Bar and Grill is located at 17535 Ballinger Way NE, on the upper level of the Town Center at Lake Forest Park.

Can’t make it to dinner? You can always make a donation online here.

Third Place Commons – a community supported 501(c)3 nonprofit organization – has been building real community in the heart of Lake Forest Park for over 20 years. In addition to presenting its largest program, the Lake Forest Park Farmers Market, Third Place Commons now also fosters real community in digital space with TPC At Home programs.
