Czebo's Challenge: Lake Forest Park police officer's personal fundraiser for Children's Hospital

Saturday, September 4, 2021

LFP Officer Jason Czebotar is
raising money for Seattle Children's
Lake Forest Park Police officer Jason Czebotar had the idea of completing 100 miles (at least) in the month of October by running, hiking, and walking while raising money for Seattle Children's Hospital.

In addition to having people follow my progress and pledge to donate, I am hoping to inspire others to run/hike/walk the 100 miles in a virtual "Fun Run" challenge.

Follow along and track his progress on the Lake Forest Park PD Instagram and Facebook.

I want to make a positive difference in the lives of children and families that are going through some of the most difficult times imaginable. With your help we will.  Every little bit will help me reach my goal.

You can donate to Czebo's Challenge here

Annual Lunar New Year 5k charity race goes virtual

Wednesday, December 16, 2020

The International Community Health Services (ICHS) Foundation opened registration Wednesday for the Lunar New Year Virtual 5k charity event.

Beginning on the first week of the Lunar New Year, the Lunar New Year Virtual 5k’s new format provides more flexibility for participation.

Registrants choose their own course and personal day to race, while encouraging safely physically distancing during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Previous year's runs have been together on the Interurban Trail in Shoreline

All race proceeds will fund patient health services for families who could not otherwise afford them.

“It's been a tough year, and ICHS has been on the frontlines caring for patients and our communities.” says Ron Chew, ICHS Foundation Director, “This event is a way for us all to celebrate a new, better year ahead and support our patients.”

The 2021 race will be individual

The event is hosted by the ICHS Foundation, a separate non-profit that fundraises year round to support ICHS’s patients with free or low-cost health services.

The COVID-19 pandemic and disruptions to the health insurance coverage for many Washington residents highlights the importance of providing affordable health care access to anyone who needs it.

The Lunar New Year Virtual 5k is open to all ages. Participants run or walk the course of their choice during the first week of the Lunar New Year (February 12-18, 2021). Registration is $35 with an early bird discounted price of $30 ending January 12, 2021. Attendees under 14 or 65 and older can participate for free.

The Richmond Beach Turkey Day Fun Run goes virtual

Thursday, November 26, 2020

By Teresa Pape
RBCA Executive Director

The RBCA will not be hosting the “official” Turkey Day Fun Run this year. We encourage all participants to be safe and to find your own way to exercise.

On the Richmond Beach Community Association’s website, www.richmondbeachwa.org you can find a map of the traditional walking and running courses.

If outside exercise is not for you, jump on your treadmill, elliptical, stationary bike or stay cozy in bed and pick a route from the Richmond Beach TV YouTube Channel.

There are a few options to choose from. Experience walking the full route, walking the short cut, or have fun racing against our fast runner, Matthew. His GoPro views will make your head wobble as you gobble up the sights of Richmond Beach.

Thank you to the sponsors for this year’s event.

Sun and Family Fun at the 2020 Lunar New Year 5K Run

Friday, February 28, 2020

Photos by Ryan Brem and Sherwin Eng

Despite a forecast of rain, sunny skies greeted runners and walkers for the fourth annual ICHS Foundation Lunar New Year 5k on February 23, 2020.

The event raised $30,000 to support health care access for families who couldn’t otherwise afford it, taking place on the Interurban Trail just blocks away from the ICHS Shoreline Medical and Dental Clinic.

Approximately 300 attendees ranged in age from 1 to 88, including one family of participants that included three generations – the parents running and grandparents walking with grandchildren.

Group warm up

Highlights included a traditional Chinese Lion Dance performed by the International Lion Dance Team and a lively group warm up led by Toshiko Aramaki, a Shoreline-area exercise instructor from the Senior Center.

“It was wonderful to see so many people, of all ages, enjoying themselves for a great cause,” said Ron Chew, ICHS foundation director.
“We look forward to building upon this year’s success, so start training for the Lunar New Year 5k in 2021, the Year of the Ox!”

The event would not have been possible without the generous contributions of many volunteers, sponsors and partners from within the community. The City of Shoreline and Aurora Rents were the Presenting Sponsors, with check-in located at Shoreline City Hall and the performance and vendors in the courtyard of Aurora Rents.

Volunteers from the Shoreline Fire Department donated time as medical emergency responders, while international education students from Shoreline Community College helped serve as event staff.

Local organizations with a presence included the Shoreline/Lake Forest Park chapter of the League of Women Voters, Shoreline Senior Center and Prevail Physical Therapy.

Turkey Day Fun Run at RB Saltwater Park Thursday morning

Saturday, November 30, 2019

The volunteers who make it work

Text and photos by Wayne Pridemore

The annual Turkey Day Fun Run at Richmond Beach Saltwater Park on Thursday morning brought out a large crowd to kick off the holiday season. This year's theme was "space". The proceeds from sponsors benefited Shoreline Hopelink food bank and emergency service.

Teresa Pape, left, and Teresa Pascale.

Many volunteer workers are required to make the event safe, and make it run smoothly.

Selling t-shirts for the community association of Richmond Beach were left, Caroline Gugger, Suzanne Gugger, and Christie Quigley.

Tom Mailhot registered runners

Each runner was registered and given tickets for a drawing before the run. Tom Mailhot was one of many who worked this task.

As the sun came up on the beautiful day the crowd began to walk down the hill for the traditional group photo. The crowd continued to grow.

Many family and friend groups participated in the event. Here is a group of turkey heads, left is Trevor Pottorf of Houston Texas, Amy Gray, Lillian Murphy, Helen Murphy, Laura Pottorf of Houston Texas, and Barbara VanWormer.

Don Wilson is the founder of the event

Don Wilson is the originator of our local turkey run. More than fourteen years ago Don and several runner friends would run at Saltwater Park each Thanksgiving day.

Each year more people would join the annual event. Don was then approached by the Richmond Beach Community Association to make the run a part of the community's annul programs. Don Wilson now serves as the event's master of ceremony, photographer, and organizer.

Don organizes the crowd for the annual photo.

And then they run!

Ghost stories from the Ridge Runners' Second Annual Halloween Run

Sunday, November 3, 2019

Crest Theatre photo by Steven H. Robinson
“Strange things happen when the theater is void of its viewers. Things in the office fall at random, I hear small noises, and see small movements in my periphery. Sometimes I think it’s just the corner of my glasses playing tricks with my mind but there’s also a subtle feeling of not being alone.”

By Megan Kogut

The Ridge Runners, a social running group out of Ridgecrest Public House, has made it a tradition to do a ghost story run on the Wednesday before Halloween.

A few runners volunteer to research and write ghost stories based on neighborhood features that were already a little curious or spooky. We run, stop at each site, and the dark, someone reads a story to the rest of us.

Also we wear costumes. This year, there were about 20 runners for the Halloween run, including a jester, a skeleton, a bike rider, a ballerina, a bear, a pirate, Wallace and Shaun the Sheep, and two scarecrows.

Our stories may or may not be appropriate for children. But we published them on the internet. If you like spooky, creative, and local stories, we encourage you to read our stories on Halloween.

Also, feel free to join the Ridge Runners any Wednesday at 6:30pm for runs of 3-5 miles, with optional social time afterwards at the pub. We run year round, rain or shine.

The Ridgecrest Pub is located at 520 NE 165th St, Shoreline 98155.
