1000 runners on streets around CRISTA Saturday morning for S.O.S. 5k to Seek Out and Stop Trafficking

Saturday, May 11, 2019

Expect to see runners on streets in Hillwood
on Saturday morning
Saturday, May 11, more than 1,000 passionate child advocates will take to the streets of Shoreline for World Concern’s 11th annual S.O.S. 5k to Seek Out and Stop trafficking and raise awareness and funds to fight child trafficking.

Extreme poverty leaves many children in Southeast Asia alone and defenseless, making them primary targets for sexual exploitation and human trafficking.

World Concern works to prevent the trafficking, exploitation, and abuse of children in poor communities by operating a hotline for reporting suspected cases of child endangerment, educating children and parents about the dangers of trafficking, and equipping them with job skills to earn income safely.

“World Concern’s work with children is driven by the fact that the most vulnerable in our world need our protection, particularly our children,” Nick Archer, Vice President of World Concern said.
“Millions of children remain vulnerable to trafficking due to circumstances beyond their, or even their families, control.”

World Concern fights child trafficking with annual S.O.S. 5k in Shoreline

Tuesday, May 7, 2019

World Concern’s 11th annual S.O.S. (Seek Out and Stop trafficking) 5k, 19303 Fremont Ave N Shoreline 98133, Saturday, May 11, 9am expects 1000 runners

Extreme poverty leaves many children in Southeast Asia alone and defenseless, making them primary targets for sexual exploitation and human trafficking.

In Nepal, a family’s oldest daughter was lured with false promises of a well-paying job in India. Sadly, she has likely been sold into the sex industry. And now their younger daughters are in danger from the same trafficker.

World Concern works to prevent the trafficking, exploitation, and abuse of children by operating a hotline for reporting suspected cases of child endangerment, educating children and parents about the dangers of trafficking, and equipping them with job skills to earn income safely.

On Saturday, May 11, more than 1,000 people will run in World Concern’s annual S.O.S. 5k to Seek Out and Stop trafficking and raise awareness and funds to fight child trafficking.

“World Concern’s work with children is driven by the fact that the most vulnerable in our world need our protection, particularly our children,” Nick Archer, Vice President of World Concern said.
“Millions of children remain vulnerable to trafficking due to circumstances beyond their, or even their families, control.”

The public is invited to join World Concern’s S.O.S 5k on May 11 to help put an end to this horrific crime against the world’s most vulnerable children.

Richmond Beach Turkey Day Fun Run brings out hundreds of runners

Friday, November 23, 2018

Photos by Wayne Pridemore

Hundreds of people came out Thanksgiving morning to run and walk in Richmond Beach's Turkey Day Fun Run.

Babies in strollers, senior citizens strolling, teams in matching outfits, dogs, costumes, red noses - oh and don't forget the team with the turkey heads in honor of the day.

The poster for this year's event was displayed on a sweatshirt held by Christie Quigley (left) and Jan Manfredini.

The turkey heads blend right in with the very diverse crowd of runners.

Lisa Guenser and Jessica Guenser were there to help sign in runners for the Turkey Day Fun Run. The weather was actually quite cooperative for the event, with clear skies. It was a bit cold, as you can tell by the red noses....

It really is all for fun - getting out and being very active on a day traditionally set aside for gorging.

Kiana Burt had a jar full of red noses. "Clowning around encouraged".

It was clear that this crowd was having a good time!

2015 5k run/walk

World Concern Fights Child Trafficking with annual S.O.S. 5K Saturday morning in Hillwood neighborhood by CRISTA.

World Concern’s 10th annual S.O.S. (Seek Out and Stop trafficking) 5K will hits the streets of Shoreline Saturday, May 12, 2018, starting at 9am from the CRISTA campus at 19303 Fremont Ave N Shoreline 98133

Extreme poverty leaves many children in Southeast Asia alone and vulnerable, making them primary targets for sexual exploitation and human trafficking.

On a recent trip to Bangladesh, World Concern staff met a mother named Shajada who was devastated by her 5-year-old son’s disappearance. “I'm afraid he was taken and sold,” she said through tears. Unfortunately, this is not uncommon in countries where World Concern is working to protect children.

Human trafficking is the fastest growing criminal activity in the world. World Concern works to prevent the trafficking, exploitation, and abuse of children by operating a hotline for reporting suspected cases of child endangerment, educating children and parents about the dangers of trafficking, and equipping them with job skills to earn income safely.

On Saturday, May 12, more than 1,000 people are expected to run in World Concern’s annual 5k S.O.S. (Seek Out and Stop trafficking) to raise awareness and funds to fight child trafficking.

“Our goal is for each child to have a bright future,” says Selina Prem Kumar, Sri Lanka country director for World Concern. “They are the only hope for the future.”

Lunar New Year 5k brings out 450 runners, a dozen dogs, and a couple of dragons

Saturday, March 3, 2018

Photos by Mike Remarcke

450 runners, a dozen dogs, and one dragon gathered on the Interurban Trail at 175th on Sunday, February 25, for the 3rd Annual 5K Lunar New Year Run and Walk to benefit the International Community Health Services Foundation. A major ICHS clinic is located in Shoreline at 16549 Aurora Ave, with medical and dental services.

Costume judging. Dog 3rd from left won.

The theme was "Run, Walk, or Howl into the Year of the Dog" and local runners and walkers of both the four- and two-legged variety brought in the Lunar New Year to help local families who cannot afford medical care.

You can't hold a New Year event without a dragon

Each year, the ICHS Foundation hosts this annual 5K to raise private dollars to help pay for the costs of uncompensated care at ICHS. In recent years, facing federal challenges, the ICHS 5K has taken on added importance.

In 2016, they served over 28,660 unduplicated patients, their largest number ever, in over 50 different languages, at their medical-dental clinics in the International District, Holly Park, Bellevue, and Shoreline, Seattle World School, Asian Counseling and Referral Services, and at the mobile dental clinic.

Some ran, some jogged, some walked
and a few just came for the fun

This year, 450 people registered for the Run and 340 crossed the finish line - a new record for participation. The event raised over $30,000 for uncompensated care to ensure that healthcare remains accessible for all.

“Facing challenges in federal funding, ICHS rely on events such as the 5K Walk and Run to serve the needs of our community,” said Ron Chew, ICHS Foundation executive director.

Celebrating the theme and keeping warm on a very cold day

Lunar New Year 5K sponsors included: East West Bank, Coordinated Care, Amerigroup, Aurora Rents, Community Health Plan of Washington, One Cup Coffee, Shoreline Rotary, Sam’s Club, Uwajimaya, Miller Hayashi Architects, City of Shoreline, HomeSight, Mei-Ling Woo State Farm Agency, Merchants Parking Association, Molina Healthcare, SCIDpda, Shoreline Community College, Viet-Wah Group, Recology, and WPI Real Estate Services.

The first to cross the finish line was far ahead of the rest.

International Community Health Services (ICHS) Since its founding in 1973, ICHS has grown from a single storefront clinic in Seattle’s Chinatown-International District with deep roots in the Asian Pacific Islander community, to employ more than 500 people and serve nearly 29,000 patients at eight clinic locations in 2016.

Run, Walk, or Howl into the Year of the Dog with ICHS Lunar 5K in Shoreline

Tuesday, January 2, 2018

Registration Now Open

Local runners and walkers of both the four- and two-legged variety are invited to get with their pack to bring in the Lunar New Year in an effort to help local families who cannot afford medical care.

International Community Health Services’ (ICHS) will be holding its 3rd annual Lunar New Year 5K walk and run fundraiser, on Sunday, February 25, in Shoreline.

Online registration for humans is now open online, while on-leash canines are welcome to join for free.

The event commemorates the lunar calendar Year of the Dog in 2018 by inviting participants to roam the environs of Shoreline’s Interurban Trail while doing good.

Each year, ICHS organizes the 5K to raise money to support uncompensated patient care and provides almost $1 million to the Puget Sound region’s most vulnerable communities — about 90% are persons of color and about 55% have limited English speaking skills and need interpretation help.

“Facing challenges in federal funding, ICHS rely on events such as the 5K Walk and Run to serve the needs of our community,” said Ron Chew, ICHS Foundation executive director.

International Community Health Services’ Lunar New Year 5K walk and run fundraising event will support uncompensated health care for families throughout the region. Participants will receive a time chip, bib, t-shirt and promotional giveaways from vendors. The first 250 participants that check-in will also receive an ICHS fanny pack.

The walk and run route will start at Shoreline City Hall, 17500 Midvale Ave N, Shoreline, WA 98133

Registration prices range from $10-$40 based on age, and increase by $5 per month.

Online registration is open now until 24 hours before the race

Pack the Park fun run raises over $9,200 for Friday Food Packs

Monday, June 19, 2017

Volunteer crew at Pack the Park

By Silje Sodal

On Saturday, June 3rd, over 430 participants gathered at the Lake Forest Park Town Center to kick off the second annual Pack the Park family fun run to benefit the Friday Food Packs program.

This essential program, organized through the LFP Presbyterian Church, serves over 100 students at Lake Forest Park and Brookside Elementary Schools by providing weekend food bags.

Presenting the check to the Friday Food Packs program

Over $9,200 was raised to serve our most vulnerable students – nearly half of the program’s annual budget!

While free and reduced breakfast and lunch options are available at public schools during the week, low-income and homeless students often experience food insecurity over the weekends.

At the finish line
Every Friday, students are discreetly given a bag of food containing easy to prepare foods which is then tucked into their backpacks and brought home.

This five year-old program strives to provide the nourishment these students need so that they can begin to experience success academically, developmentally and socially.

With proceeds from last year’s event, the Friday Food Packs program expanded its efforts and began partnering with Shorecrest High School.

With funding from this year’s event, the program intends to deepen its outreach at existing partnering schools and explore partnerships with other neighborhood schools.

Community Engagement Coordinator Leslie Eck said, “I am humbled by the support from our community and the Brookside and Lake Forest Park PTAs for the Friday Food Packs program…
"Thanks to everyone who worked on this event and who came out and participated - you are helping us to change the outcome for so many kids in our schools.”

An additional incentive to participate came from the friendly competition between the two elementary schools. The school with the highest number of registrations takes home the Spirit Cup, and this year Lake Forest Park Elementary took the trophy home to display until next year.

Principal Aimee Miner congratulations LFP kids

The Lake Forest Park and Brookside Elementary School PTAs coordinated extensively over the last six months to recruit sponsors, secure permits and organize the event.

Special thanks to Mayor Jeff Johnson, LFP Council Member Semra Riddle, Shoreline School District Superintendent Rebecca Miner, School Board Directors David Wilson and Debi Ehrlichman and State Representative Gerry Pollet for their participation and support.

Principals Simard and Miner
Thanks also to our wonderful community sponsors:

Finally, thanks to the food trucks Street Donuts and Vet Chef for providing sustenance to our runners!

Stay tuned for details about the 2018 Pack the Park fun run!
