ICHS to hold second annual Lunar New Year 5k in Shoreline on Feb 26, 2017

International Community Health Services (ICHS) has announced plans to hold the second annual Lunar New Year 5k in Shoreline on Sunday, February 26, 2017.

Earlier this year, ICHS organized the first-ever Lunar New Year 5k at the Mercer Slough Nature Park in Bellevue to bring attention to its new Bellevue medical-dental clinic. The sold-out event attracted over 300 runners and walkers, raising over $21,000 to support uncompensated patient care.

The Lunar New Year is traditionally the most significant holiday for many Asian Pacific Islanders, marking the return of Spring and a special time for families to offer wishes for health and prosperity in the coming year. The Year of the Rooster begins on January 28, 2017.
“With the success and popularity of this new tradition we thought it would be nice to now turn the spotlight on our other new ICHS clinic in Shoreline in 2017,” ICHS Foundation Director Ron Chew said.

Chew pointed out that the Lunar New Year 5k will take place along the Interurban Trail in Shoreline.

“We’re encouraging folks to integrate this healthy, family-friendly winter activity into their celebration of the New Year,” Chew said.

The start of the 5k will be launched with a colorful lion dance performance. The event includes chip-timing, awards in different age categories and for best costumes, raffle prizes and post-race food and beverages.

ICHS was established in 1973 as a free storefront clinic in Seattle’s Chinatown-International District, providing bilingual health care to low-income residents, especially immigrant families and seniors. The agency now offers services through its seven locations, including new clinics in Bellevue and Shoreline. Last year, ICHS served over 25,500 unduplicated patients and provided interpretation in 53 languages.

Last year, ICHS provided $1.2 million in charity care. Proceeds from the Shoreline 5k will go toward supporting care for these patients in need.

The 37,000 sq. ft. ICHS Shoreline medical-dental clinic is located at 16549 Aurora Ave N. The new three-story facility opened in September 2014 as the first non-profit community health center in Shoreline. A pharmacy is scheduled to open inside the clinic later this year.

Early registration is $25. A free commemorative t-shirt will be included along with the registration fee. The event will be free to children under 13 and those over the age of 70. Seniors between the ages of 60 and 69 will receive a $5 discount.

The race website will open for registration in late July. For information about the event or to inquire about sponsorship opportunities, contact Christine Loredo at 206-788-3672.

1,600 will run in Shoreline Saturday to help stop human trafficking

Friday, May 6, 2016

Free Them 5k will be run on Saturday from CRISTA

The starting horn will sound at 9:00am Saturday for World Concern’s Free Them 5k. Now in its 8th year, the community event has raised more than half a million dollars in its history and ensured the protection of tens of thousands of vulnerable children and women living in the world’s poorest places.

Participants raise funds and awareness about the problem of human trafficking — particularly the heinous crime of child trafficking — by running or walking the 5k route through Shoreline, starting at World Concern’s headquarters on the CRISTA Ministries campus.

It’s a tangible way for families and participants of all ages to help end the enslavement of more than 35 million people around the world.

Children, women, and men are often lured with promises of jobs or opportunities, only to be trapped into forced labor, prostitution, or modern-day slavery.

World Concern works to prevent the trafficking, exploitation, and abuse of children and adults in poor communities throughout Southeast Asia by operating a hotline for reporting suspected cases of child endangerment, educating children and parents about the danger of trafficking, and equipping them with job skills to earn income safely. According to the U.S. State Department, prevention programs are key to combatting trafficking globally.

Donations to the Free Them 5k support World Concern’s anti-trafficking programs.

World Concern is a Christian global relief and development organization. Our areas of expertise include disaster response, clean water, education, food security, child protection, microfinance and health.

Second Annual Richmond Beach “Beach to Bluff” Fun Run Adds Spartan Twist

Monday, August 10, 2015

The youngest runner in 2014 run

The “Beach to Bluff - Bust Your Buns” run returns to Richmond Beach Saltwater Park August 16 at 7:30am as part of the Celebrate Shoreline summer activities.

This year’s free run has a new Spartan twist.

“Frankly, we were stunned at how quickly runners tackled and chewed up that long beach to bluff hill,” said Jamie Holter, Beach to Bluff run coordinator. “So, we added more challenges.”

This year, competitors start at the beach, head up the Richmond Beach Saltwater Park hill and into the first parking lot. There, runners will hula hoop for one minute, complete an agility ladder and do 25 jumping jacks. Then it’s up the next piece of hill.

In the upper parking lot, competitors will do 50 jump rope skips and dribble a basketball around the parking lot. And it’s on to the bluff for a loop and back down the stairs.

Runners will be serenaded by live piano music at the top of the hill thanks to pianos provided by the City of Shoreline as part of the It’s Piano Time! program.

Last year, Shorewood Cross Country star Andrew Christiansen completed the loop in less than 15 minutes! We hear the Shorewood Football team plans to compete with the Cross Country team this year excelling, of course, in hula hoop and the agility ladder!

Shoreline’s own Lamont “Running Man” Thomas will emcee the event again, launching runners with an inspirational speech about determination and overcoming obstacles.

Top finishers will earn gift cards from local merchants. All finishers get free food and water also provided by local sponsors including Central Market, Zing Bars, and Super Supplements.

T-shirts are available with a suggested $10 donation. Runners are invited to stick around for the Sandcastle Contest at noon.

Registration begins at 11am. Many thanks to the YMCA and the City of Shoreline for their support. Richmond Beach Saltwater Park, 2021 NW 190th St, Shoreline 98177.

Friday, May 8, 2015

On Saturday, May 9, 1,500 runners and walkers will take to the streets of Shoreline to help fight one of the most horrific crimes of our generation – human trafficking.

World Concern will hold its 7th Annual Free Them 5k Saturday, May 9 on the CRISTA Ministries campus, 19303 Fremont Ave N, Shoreline 98133.

The race begins at 9:00am.

More than 29 million people are affected by sex trafficking, forced labor, and modern day slavery worldwide.

World Concern helps protect the most vulnerable – children at risk and women – in some of the poorest countries in the world.

For those who want to cheer on the runners, here is the course map.

Participate in World Concern's 7th Annual Free Them 5K in Shoreline

Monday, March 30, 2015

Last year's event raised $167,000

1,500 Runner and Walkers will help stop Human Trafficking through the 7th Annual “Free Them” 5k on May 9, 2015

On Saturday, May 9, 1500 advocates will take to the streets of Shoreline to protect vulnerable children and women from human trafficking at World Concern’s 7th Annual Free Them 5k.

Participants will raise awareness and funds for this cause by running or walking the 5k route through Shoreline, beginning at World Concern’s headquarters on the CRISTA Ministries campus.

The event is a favorite for runners, walkers, and families in the Puget Sound region because it offers a fun, tangible way to make a difference in a problem that can otherwise seem overwhelming.

Worldwide, an estimated 35 million men, women, and – most heartbreakingly – children, are trapped in modern slavery today (*2014 Global Slavery Index). Last year’s event raised $167,000 to support World Concern’s anti-trafficking projects in some of the poorest countries in Southeast Asia – a hub for sex tourism, trafficking, and slavery.

The event is expected to sell out in April, so those interested in getting involved in the fight against human trafficking should register now.

World Concern is a Christian global relief and development organization. At World Concern, the solutions we offer, the work we do, creates lasting, sustainable change. Our areas of expertise include disaster response, clean water, education, food security, child protection, microfinance and health.
