Beach to Bluff Bust Your Buns Run - fun in the fog and sun

Saturday, August 23, 2014

75 runners and volunteers turned out for the run

The Inaugural Richmond Beach “Beach to Bluff Bust Your Buns Run” was a wild success! In the early morning hours of Aug. 17, nearly 75 brave souls turned out to volunteer or run the grueling two mile course.

Lamont "Running Man" Thomas
was Master of Ceremonies

It started at 8am with Lamont “Running Man” Thomas serving as Master of Ceremonies. With his words, “Let’s tackle that hill!” Lamont and Shoreline Mayor Shari Winstead led the group over the bridge, up the hill, out to the bluff and back down the stairs.

Dr. Jason Penaluna, left, was 2nd
Andrew Christianson was 1st

The race was quickly and easily won by Shorewood’s champion cross country runner Andrew Christianson who blew the competition away with a 10:24 time. Second place went to Dr. Jason Penaluna, a Richmond Beach runner, business owner and member of the inaugural “B2B” organizing committee.

Nathan Wilkinson, age 11, was winner
in the Kids Division

Other standouts included Tani Stenfjord, first place in the women’s group with at 13:31. Nathan Wilkinson (age 11) was the top Kids Division winner with 14:58. Participants described it as tough – a real leg burner – but promised to return next year.

Thanks to the volunteers!

Organizers want to thank members of the Richmond Beach Running Club who gave up the run to volunteer along the course, the Richmond Beach Community Association who paid for King County Sheriff’s Deputies and all the local businesses who donated gift certificates.

Organizers already have plans for next year

This is the first year for the event, which is an official part of Celebrate Shoreline. They tell us next year it will expand to a 5K, have fun t-shirts available and include a volunteer piano player to serenade runners as they make their way down the 188 stairs to the finish line.

First Annual Richmond Beach “Beach to Bluff, Bust Your Buns” Run

Wednesday, August 13, 2014

You think you’re tough? Put your butt muscles to the test at the First Annual “Beach to Bluff, Bust Your Buns Run” Sunday, Aug. 17 at 8am at the Richmond Beach Saltwater Park in Shoreline. Registration begins at 7am.

“This is intense, but possible” said Jack Malek, run organizer and longtime Richmond Beach resident. “I see people out here every day running the 188 stairs, biking the hill or strolling the bluff. This run puts it all together for two miles.”

Lamont Thomas
Richmond Beach’s famous “Running Man” Lamont Thomas serves as Master of Ceremonies. He will kick off the run at the beach. From the Giant Totem, runners will head across the railroad track bridge, up the hill and out to the bluff. They’ll return via the 188 Stairs of Death passing by the popular outdoor Tidal Tempo piano, one of eleven painted pianos strategically located throughout Shoreline for the summer.

While the race isn't timed, participant’s names will be entered into a drawing to win gift cards to local Richmond Beach restaurants and coffee bars. Vendors with free chair massages and other booths will be set up in the parking lot for post-run enjoyment.

If runners aren't too tired, they are invited to stick around for the annual Sandcastle Building contest which begins at nearly the same spot at 11:30am.

Richmond Beach is a neighborhood within the City of Shoreline and home to nearly a dozen popular community events. It was named the Best Place to live by Seattle Met Magazine in 2010.

King's students host the Costume 2K Run Oct 26

Friday, October 18, 2013

Benefit for Seattle Urban Academy

King’s High School students will host the “Costume 2K Run,” a fun run for costumed participants, at 10:30am on Saturday, October 26. The first-year event will include a race through the 55-acre CRISTA campus in Shoreline (19303 Fremont Ave N) as well as a bouncy house, barista stand, raffle and costume contest.

The King’s Costume 2K Run was created by King’s High School students Emma Rasmussen and Emily Cline, both juniors, and event production will take place with the help of approximately 40 other King’s High School students.

“Emily and I feel compelled to give back to our community by creating an event that would be fun and motivating for our fellow students, their families and the community,” said Rasmussen. “We’re looking forward to hosting a fun event for families, and proceeds will be going to a great cause.”

Registration is $10 per participant, with proceeds benefiting the food and fitness program at Seattle Urban Academy, a high school in Seattle’s Central District that specializes in transforming youth at risk into young adults with hope. Like King’s, Seattle Urban Academy is a member of the CRISTA family of ministries.

Brier man finds new home for cancer fundraising run in Kenmore and Lake Forest Park

Monday, August 12, 2013

Republished from our News Partner MLTNews

After his hopes of staging a 10K / 5K fun run in his hometown were thwarted earlier this year, Brier resident Ryan Adkins kept running with the idea, and has now found a receptive home for the charity event in a neighboring community.

“Kilometers for Cancer has moved on successfully to Kenmore,” Adkins said. “It has come together nicely; my team and I have worked hard to bring everything together. The city of Kenmore, Lake Forest Park and the King County Parks system have all worked together with us to make this a reality.”

The inaugural Kilometer for Cancer 10K/5K Run and Walk is scheduled to take place on Sunday, Sept. 15, beginning and ending at Log Boom Park, 6100 N.E. 175th St. in Kenmore. Proceeds from the event will go to the Lymphoma Research Foundation.

Ryan, a runner himself, has helped stage runs throughout the area and was hoping to put on an event in Brier this November. But city officials there had concerns about costs, safety and disruptions to the rural community if hundreds of runners took to the streets in a fun run.

In an effort to keep the fun run alive, Ryan approached city officials at Kenmore City Hall about staging the event in the north King County city. “The council members and the mayor listened to my proposal,” Ryan explained. “Some councilmembers came up to me after the meeting to congratulate me on the idea and encourage this type of start-up event work. One councilmember commented that ‘It’s what the community needs.’”

The run route will be primarily on the Burke Gilman Trail, offering scenic views of the north shore of Lake Washington. Ryan also plans on including music and local vendors as part of the event. Entry fees range from $25 to $45, with $5 dollar discounts for early registration. The 10K run will begin at 9am; the 5K run will take off at 9:15am, with the 5K walk five minutes later.

With Kilometers for Cancer laying down tracks in Kenmore, Ryan has dropped his dream of staging the event in Brier. “Even though it would be nice, there are no plans in the future to move the race to Brier,” he said. “The first year sets the foundation for years to come. Kenmore will keep the event, until participant volume dictates otherwise.”

More information on the Kilometers for Cancer 10K/5K Run and Walk on Sept. 15, or registration for the event online.

More than 2,000 Participants Expected at Saturday’s “Free Them” 5k/10k to Fight Human Trafficking

Friday, May 10, 2013

Runners in a Free Them 5K event

More than 2,000 enthusiastic runners and walkers will converge at World Concern’s headquarters, this Saturday, May 11, to help raise awareness and funds to prevent human trafficking.

This is World Concern’s 5th annual “Free Them” 5k/10k event. Last year’s race drew more than 1,900 people, and raised $142,000 to support World Concern’s anti-trafficking programs. This year’s event is expected to be larger and raise even more for this important cause. Human trafficking is estimated to be the third largest criminal activity in the world, and more than 80% of trafficking victims are women and young girls. World Concern works to protect those vulnerable to modern-day slavery, sexual exploitation, and abuse in some of the poorest places in Southeast Asia and around the world.

Edmonds resident Gary Womelsduff will participate in the 10k race, and will lead the crowd in a moment of silence before the race to honor those affected by the April 15 Boston bombings.
Womelsduff ran the Boston Marathon this year, crossing the finish line about 50 minutes before the explosions occurred. World Concern would like to remember and pray for the families of those who lost their lives, and for those who were injured.

For more information about the Free Them 5k/10k, visit the webpage. Participants can register onsite the day of the event. For stories and photos of World Concern’s humanitarian work around the world, visit the webpage or call Cathy Herholdt at 206-546-7374.

5th Annual World Concern “Free Them” 5k/10k Helps Protect Women / Children from Trafficking

Saturday, April 13, 2013

Human trafficking is estimated to be the third largest criminal activity in the world, and more than 80% of trafficking victims are women and young girls. World Concern works to protect those vulnerable to modern-day slavery, sexual exploitation, and abuse in some of the poorest places in Southeast Asia and around the world.

The 5th Annual “Free Them” 5k/10k to help stop human trafficking will take place in Shoreline, on Saturday, May 11, 2013. The event helps raise awareness and funds for World Concern’s anti trafficking programs.

Last year’s event drew nearly 2,000 participants to World Concern’s headquarters, the 55-acre CRISTA Ministries campus in Shoreline. The event also raised $142,000 to help protect women and innocent children from becoming victims—children like Tong:

When we met 12-year-old Tong, she had not been to school for two years and was working on her parents’ rice farm in rural Laos, near the Thai border. Her family of 9 is often hungry. Tong was considering going to Thailand to find work.
“I heard from friends that it is easy to earn income (in Thailand). I would like to try. Even just a little pay for any work, I will accept,” she said eagerly.
Thankfully, Tong was offered job skills training through World Concern in her village. She learned to sew, and is now able to earn enough income selling traditional Lao skirts to help support her family. And, since she’ll no longer have to work in the rice fields, she can go back to school.

World Concern helps protect children like Tong with trafficking awareness programs, job skills training, and education. Parents and families are given opportunities to earn income, so their children are not at risk of being “sold” in order for younger siblings to survive. Long-term solutions like this help protect entire communities.

“Free Them” 5k/10k participants can raise funds to help this important cause, and many are enthusiastically sharing their fundraising pages through social media. Kirkland resident Mark LeMaster has already raised $4,536 from friends, family members, and coworkers.

“It was a great experience last year,” said LeMaster, who signed up just a week before the 2012 race after hearing about it on the radio. “I thought, I’m in for next year.” LeMaster has shared his fundraising page with anyone he can think of, and has been surprised at people’s willingness to get involved and donate. On his page he explains his reason for doing this, “(World Concern) is awesome and helps protect people from human trafficking, sexual exploitation (often young girls), and sexual slavery. These people are trafficked through threat or use of force, coercion, abduction, fraud, deception, abuse of power … They are trapped. This charity helps free them.”

Anyone interested in participating in the “Free Them” 5k/10k can register online

1,500 participants expected at “Free Them” 5k Run/Walk to help stop human trafficking

Monday, April 16, 2012

On Saturday, May 12, an anticipated 1,500 runners and walkers will take to the streets of Shoreline in a united effort to help protect vulnerable children and women from human trafficking.

World Concern’s annual “Free Them” 5k Run/Walk to stop human trafficking will be held at its headquarters, 19303 Fremont Ave. N., and aims to raise awareness and funds for anti-trafficking programs.

Human trafficking is rampant in many parts of the world. According to UNICEF, as many as 2 million children are entrapped in the global commercial sex trade. But Puget Sound residents are taking action to help stop this horrific crime by participating in the 5k.

More than 1,000 people participated last year
Last year, more than 1,000 people participated, raising $107,000 toward World Concern’s programs, which provide education, job skills and safe havens for victims and those at risk of trafficking in Southeast Asia.

Brier resident Lorene Jansson was a top fundraiser for last year’s event, and will be running the 5k again this year.

Before getting involved in the Free Them 5k, she felt paralyzed by the magnitude of the problem of human trafficking.

“It’s an overwhelming problem. I live in a nice little house in Brier, what can I do? But I realized I can do something. I can register for the run and get involved,” she said. “This is something we all can do. It’s right in our backyard.”

Jansson sells homemade cinnamon rolls and beaded jewelry to friends and coworkers to raise funds for the cause.

“You take your passion, whatever it is, and apply it to what you want to do,” she said. “It’s inspiring to see so many like-minded people wanting to do something about trafficking. There’s a lot of energy and a lot of young people at the event.”

Anyone interested in participating in the Free Them 5k can register.

Candy Cane Dash - a Family Tradition

Friday, December 3, 2010

The 15th Annual Candy Cane Dash 5K run/walk this Saturday at 9 am in the Shoreline Stadium has a family history.

In 1996, a Shorecrest student named Scott Ruhlman created the event for his senior project. Some wondered about holding a Run in our uncertain December weather, but the skies were clear and the event was a resounding success. The Dash has been held every year since, providing Senior Projects for a lot of students.

Scott went to college and medical school in Ohio, completed five years of residency at the UW, went to Harvard for a one year specialty in arm/hand surgery, and now is back in the area as an orthopedic surgeon at Orthopedic Specialists of Seattle. His practice is providing the main sponsorship for the Candy Cane Dash this year. He has come back to support the race that he himself started 15 years ago.

His sponsorship may have something to do with this year's Race Director, Shorecrest senior Melissa Ruhlman, Scott's youngest sister. But wait - there's more. During the 15 years of the race, two other Ruhlman siblings have been Race Directors: Karen Ruhlman in 2003 and Kevin Ruhlman in 2007. Melissa is the youngest of eight children. "I've been waiting 15 years for this," she said.

Is there pressure from the Ruhlman clan on the fourth member of the family to direct the race that Scott Ruhlman started?

"As for competition, it is expected (and strived for!) that I will at least match or get close to my siblings' totals in terms of money raised and runners participating. Naturally, Scott really wants this year's Candy Cane Dash to be successful since he is involved in it so closely as a mentor and a sponsor."

Drop-ins are welcome to participate in the race, simply be there at 8 am to register.  The Shoreline Stadium is at NE 185th and 5th NE. behind the Shoreline Center's Spartan Gym.  Proceeds from the race help fund the Senior Projects at Shorecrest.
