The Seattle Times: An unusual race in Shoreline sends runners in circles

Sunday, March 17, 2024

Route for the Boeing Creek Trail Run

On a drizzly, windy Saturday morning in Shoreline, 40 bundled-up runners crossed the start line of a slightly unusual race. Grand Douglas fir trees loomed over the participants as they began their day puffing up a trail at Shoreview Park. For the next two, four or six hours, they would run in circles.

The Seattle Times published a feature on the Boeing Creek Crawl, held in Shoreview Park on March 9, 2024. See our previous story here and The Times story here.

Boeing Creek Crawl trail run at Shoreview Park Saturday, March 9, 2024

Monday, March 4, 2024

On Saturday, March 9, 2024 Northwest Trail Runs will host the Boeing Creek Crawl trail run at Shoreview Park

The run will start at 9:00am and last until 3:00pm.

The event will start and finish in the parking lot near the entrance to the Forest Loop trail.

The event includes two-hour, four-hour, and six-hour timed runs with entry fees ranging from $43 to $95, depending upon age, event, and registration date, and a free kids' run for children 12 or under.

It is open to the public, and any runner or walker is welcome to participate. Information and registration are available at Northwest Rail Runs website.

ICHS Lunar New Year 5k Benefit: 500 runners and walkers to hit Shoreline Interurban Trail to support healthcare for all

Thursday, February 22, 2024

Over 500 people have registered for International Community Health Services’ (ICHS) 2024 Lunar New Year 5k Benefit, a family friendly community event for runners and walkers of all ages and abilities.

Apart from celebrating the new year with communities near and far, this year’s 5k also includes tabling booths and vendors throughout the time of the event.

A traditional lion dance accompanied by drums will commence at 8:50am, leading runners and walkers to the race starting line. The lion dance is an important ritual in Chinese tradition believed to bring good luck and drive away evil spirits on auspicious occasions.

All proceeds of this event will go directly towards ICHS patient services.

There will be a costume contest for participants to show their best Year of the Dragon spirit for a chance to win tickets to the Woodland Park Zoo. There is also a virtual component to the race with supporters sharing photos of their own 5k run using #ICHSLNY5k.

View photos from last year’s 2023 Lunar New Year 5k event here.

WHERE:
  • Check in: Shoreline City Hall (17500 Midvale Ave N)
  • Main event space: Aurora Rents (17460 Aurora Ave N, Shoreline)
  • Race track: Shoreline Interurban Trail
WHEN:
  • Sunday Feb. 25, 2024 from 8am to 12pm
  • Race Begins at 9am with a staggered start time for runners, walkers, and participants with dogs and/or strollers.

The ICHS Foundation organized its first Lunar New Year 5K in 2016. The Lunar New Year 5K Benefit is now an annual fundraising event for ICHS to provide comprehensive healthcare services to people who are uninsured or unable to pay for healthcare.

In past years, it has not only funded patients to receive the care they need, but has also been a fun event for the community to come out and support ICHS and the patients it serves.

International Community Health Services is a federally qualified community health center that provides culturally and linguistically appropriate health services in over 70 languages to improve the wellness of King County’s diverse people and communities.

Since its founding in 1973, ICHS has grown from a single storefront clinic in Seattle’s Chinatown-International District with deep roots in the Asian Pacific Islander community, to a regional health care provider employing more than 600 staff and serving over 30,000 patients at 10 service locations.

ICHS’ Shoreline Medical & Dental Clinic is located at 16549 Aurora Ave N, Shoreline, WA 98133.

Registration opens for the 2024 Lunar New Year 5K in Shoreline

Tuesday, January 2, 2024

The International Community Health Services Foundation has opened registration for the 2024 Lunar New Year 5K. This beloved family-friendly charity race will take place on Sunday February 25, 2024 in Shoreline, WA.

Lunar New Year 5K registration is open to all ages. All donations and race proceeds fund health services for uninsured or low-income ICHS patients who would otherwise not be able to afford them.

“By registering you’re doing more than committing to a healthy start of the Lunar New Year,” says Alice Braverman, ICHS Foundation Executive Director.
“You’re championing the cause of health access for all. Your registration will go directly to helping families pay for essential medical and dental services.”

Participants will run along the Interurban Trail — a paved pedestrian-only course that skirts the ICHS Shoreline Medical & Dental Clinic on Aurora Ave N. Participants may run or walk the course. The race will be professionally chip-timed for runners, as well as safely marked for walkers and families of all abilities.

Other than the race itself, the 2024 Lunar New Year 5k will also feature community organizations and other engagement opportunities that will be tabling at Aurora Rents throughout the event.

Registration is $40 with an early bird discounted price of $35 ending January 25, 2024.

Attendees under 10 or 65 and older can participate for free.

Runners are encouraged to wear appropriate costumes

All photos by Wayne Pridemore

On Thanksgiving morning, the Richmond Beach Community Association (RBCA) held its 17th annual 10k Fun Run.

The wind might have been blowing but everyone kept their hats on

And probably for the 17th year our photographer Wayne Pridemore was there to photograph it.

At the starting point, runners are reminded of the rules and the route.

And they're off!

And then they are turned loose. It's a fun run but runners get very competitive - after all, bragging rights are at stake.

Race walkers have more fun

There is a completely different course for walkers. They take time to smell the roses (there may be a few along the way) and to wave and smile at the cameraman.

Spirit of the Race

If this creature is not the race mascot, they certainly should be!

And so it is done for another year. It will be back, so mark your calendars and start working on your hats.

Returning to Shoreline after two years of going virtual, the International Community Health Services (ICHS) Lunar New Year 5k fundraiser was back in-person last Sunday February 26, 2023.

Not even snow could keep attendees apart from the beloved local 5k run along the Interurban Trail. Over 300 walkers and runners of all ages joined in the event to raise charity funds to provide free and low-cost health services for uninsured ICHS patients.

"After two virtual years, our advocates and community members really showed up alongside us at the Lunar New Year 5k," said Christine Consolacion, Interim ICHS Foundation Executive Director.
"Not only did we fundraise for patient health services, it was also an occasion for us to celebrate being back together. As a community health center, our roots started with community and will continue to grow stronger within community."

Highlights included group warm-ups from local Personal Trainer and Running Coach Jackie Soo and a lion dance bringing attendees to the starting line before the race began.

This was the fifth in-person Lunar New Year 5k held by ICHS, and the fourth one held at the Interurban Trail in partnership with the City of Shoreline and local business Aurora Rents.

Right as the runners were on their final stretch to the finish line the sun broke through the clouds for a sunny, fortuitous lunar new year celebration.

Local State Farm Agent joins forces with NO MORE to raise awareness of the need to end domestic violence, sexual assault

Tuesday, March 8, 2022

L-R: Shinae Jeong, Chelsea Roehm, Ashley Olson, Agent Wendi Valles, and James Valles.

The NO MORE Foundation is conducting its 2nd annual NO MORE Week Virtual 5k Walk/Run fundraiser this week. State Farm agents, along with the general public, are participating in order to support the critical work of NO MORE, a nonprofit dedicated to ending domestic violence and sexual assault.

The Virtual 5k is being held during NO MORE Week -- March 6th to March 13th -- an annual event when NO MORE and its allies shine a spotlight on the importance of stopping and preventing domestic and sexual violence. The NO MORE Week Virtual 5k also commemorates International Women’s Day (March 8th).

On average, nearly 20 people per minute are physically abused by an intimate partner in the United States.

During one year, this equates to more than 10 million women and men. According to UN Women, 1 in 2 women reported that they or a woman they know experienced a form of violence since the COVID-19 pandemic began. One in 4 women (23%) said that COVID-19 made things worse in terms of how safe they feel at home.

The race was created as a fun, easy way to get some exercise, raise awareness and much-needed funds for violence prevention. To encourage participation, the 5K is completed any time, in any way desired between March 7th and March 13th.
Participants can complete the 5K on their street, a neighborhood park, the local gym, treadmill, or favorite track.

Local State Farm agent Wendi Valles in Shoreline and her staff, along with family members, participated as a team for the cause.

Quick facts:
  • More than 1,000 State Farm Agents, Employees, Family and Friends have signed up to run
  • Over 9 Countries are participating (US, United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, Mexico, and others)
  • Mariska Hargitay, who stars as Olivia in NBC’s Law and Order, has joined the cause and signed up for the run.
