It was Senior Night for the Shorewood Thunderbirds and as students and parents gathered to cheer on a group of individuals who hadn’t seen a lot of winning in their high school career - everyone was anxious for a statement win.

When a football program is rediscovering winning - at the end of the night a win is a win. But, as the final whistle blew for the WesCo South league game between the Shorewood Thunderbirds and the Lynnwood Royals - this is one win the T-bird coaching staff would surely soon forget and get ready for the next game.

Although the score does not reflect the level of play - bottomline on this game - it was ugly with a capital U. Sloppy game play and mental mistakes marred the opening drives of both teams, as each committed 4 penalties and set the tone for the remainder of the game.

As the night progressed - it almost seemed like the green turf of Shoreline District Stadium had turned to yellow as so many penalty flags littered the playing field and completely broke down any sense of rhythm in game play.

The first quarter was scoreless, with both teams trading punts and Shorewood lost starting junior wideout and cornerback #12 Spencer Osborn (6’1/165) to a minor leg injury.

#20 Noah Keys and #53 Tres Zeigler defend a Lynnwood PAT

At the 1:58 mark in the 1st, Shorewood held Lynnwood to a 4th and 2 and the Royals punted from their own 38. The ball sailed deep to junior return man #21 Dashawn Alexander (6’0/175) who then broke left, dancing and juking the Royal defenders and sprung down the left sideline for an apparent 65 yard punt return for six.

As the T-birds celebrated in the end zone it would all be for naught, as the T-birds were called for a blindside block and the touchdown was negated. Alexander also had an interception return for 6 called back after another blindside block in the 2nd quarter.

Both efforts by Alexander were electrifying as he moved around the field avoiding defenders like a character out of a Madden video football game.

#31 Brandon Main catches a pass for one of Shorewood's six touchdowns

Shorewood took over on their own 40 and with some hard nosed running by senior running back #3 Robert ‘Money’ Banks, when senior quarterback #4 David Snell (6’3/175) connected with senior running back #31 Brandon Main (6’2/190) for a 28 yard touchdown strike. The PAT snap was botched and Shorewood was up 6-0 with 11:44 remaining in the 2nd quarter.

Lynnwood answered on the next drive, starting on their own 37 after a 26 yard kickoff return by Lynnwood returner #5 Daniel Tran. The Royals marched the length of the field, helped by defensive penalties and scored on a 21 yard touchdown run by #9 Nate Killen. Lynnwood took the lead 7-6 but would not hold it for long.

On both offense and defense Shorewood struggled to gain a sense of consistent momentum as mental mistakes and some questionable calls stymied the effort to dominate the Royals and seal the game.

#4 QB David Snell throws though traffic to his receiver #5 Joseph Williamson

Yet, even with the struggles - quarterback David Snell set the tone for a focused passing attack - finding his fleet of sure handed and speedy receivers for 6 passing touchdowns.

  • Quarter 2 - Snell to senior wide receiver #2 Jaro Rouse (6’2/185) 21 yard touchdown pass (2-point conversion good) SWH 14 / LHS 7.
  • Quarter 2 - Snell to senior wide receiver #5 Joseph Williamson (5’9/165) 38 yard touchdown pass - SWH 21 / LHS 7.
  • Quarter 2 - Lynnwood fumbles the punt snap, Shorewood recovers on the Lynnwood 1 with 3 seconds remaining in the half. Snell to #2 Rouse for a 1 yard touchdown pass - SWH 28 / LHS 7.
  • Quarter 3 - #2 Rouse takes the opening kick off back for a touchdown, but it is called back due to a blindside block. Shorewood regroups and marches down the field - as Snell connects with #5 Williamson for a 35 yard completion, which then sets up a 23 yard touchdown pass from Snell to Williamson - SWH 35 / LHS 7 with 9:10 remaining in the 3rd.
  • Quarter 4 - with 3:59 remaining - Shorewood started on their own 39 and moved the ball down the field for the final touchdown pass, with Snell connecting with Main for his second touchdown reception of the night - SWH 42 / LHS 21.

On a positive note - Shorewood only had one turnover, and had 3 interceptions - junior free safety #15 Cody Carpenter (5’7/135) and backup senior linebacker #34 Jordan King (5’8/155) coming up with picks.

#9 Ray Davis sacks and strips the Lynnwood QB

Further, the Shorewood 2nd string showed tremendous heart and fire in the second half, as the defensive substitutes did not let up on their pressure of the Royals offense. Senior linebacker #9 Ray Davis (6’0/180) had several great defense plays - including a sack and several pressures where he pursued the opposing running back and quarterback half way across the field.

#29 Nelson Tardie makes the tackle

A few notes:
  • Shorewood is 5-1 for the first time since 1998 when the team finished 6-3 and this is only the second time since 1977 when the T-birds finished with their best record ever at 8-2
  • Shorewood has outscored their opponents by 107 points through 6 games.
  • Shorewood plays Edmonds-Woodway next week in their final WESCO South League game - if Shorewood wins - they will lock a 2nd place finish and be guaranteed a spot in the week 10 state play-in game.
  • Shorewood has not beaten Edmonds-Woodway since 2003 and in the 9 loses since that time, has lost by an average of 32 points per game. Edmonds-Woodway is 1-5 overall this year, but dropped a heartbreaker to league leading Snohomish 41-35 in overtime Friday night. Suffice it to say, they will be hungry for a win against Shorewood.
  • Shorewood did not give up an offensive sack all night - a definite improvement over last year, when the line gave up an average of 4 sacks a game.

Next game: Friday, October 12, 2018 - 5PM, Edmonds District Stadium -
Shorewood 5-1 vs. Edmonds-Woodway 1-5

Rob Oxford: What A Kick!

The first Graduating Class of Shorecrest High School 1964
were in the stands to support their team

Text and photos by Rob Oxford

Friday Night the stage was set for what was certain to be an exciting football game for the Shorecrest Highlanders. Looking to rebound from a devastating shutout by their crosstown rivals in last week's Rotary Cup, Homecoming 2018 was upon them and the undefeated (in league play) Snohomish Panthers were on the prowl at Shoreline Stadium.

In attendance and recognized during the game by Stadium Announcer Wyatt Tonkin, sitting together as I'm sure they did those many years ago, the Shorecrest High School Charter Class of 1964.

Facing one of their toughest opponents, the Scots remained optimistic about their chances of bouncing back. Their defense had been altered slightly to account for the Panthers all but non-existent passing attack and instead focused on the tough running of Snohomish RB Tyler Massena.

QB Eladio Fountain looks to connect with a receiver downfield

At times throughout the first half the offensive line seemed to be providing its QB with ample opportunity to deliver the ball, but #19 Eladio Fountain seemed to be just a bit off. Some passes were overthrown while other missed opportunities seemed to be the result of miscommunication or possibly the wrong routes being run by his receivers. The second half would prove to be his redemption as he completed 19-of-35 passes for 257 yards and a touchdown.

Silencing the home team early and leading Shorecrest 21-0 with 1:59 to play in the first quarter, it seemed that the Scots would be forced to regroup at halftime. Fortunately for them, stout defense and a failed fake punt by the Panthers led to a 1 yard plunge by Fountain into the end zone and the Scots were finally on the board.

During the very next defensive series, with nothing but open space in front of him, a sure "Pick 6" was dropped by #8 Gavin MacFarlane. An opportunity to put the Scots 6 points closer was missed, but nonetheless, a glimmer of optimism began to encompass the Green and Gold.

As the world-famous Highlander Marching Band played and the Homecoming Court was being introduced, in the locker room this reporter was curious as to what was being said.

What words of wisdom was Coach Christensen sharing with his warriors that would motivate them to mount a comeback? What would make this game different than the last? Most importantly, how would the Highlanders emerge and how would they answer the call?

The Scots received the ball in the second half and quickly engineered two lengthy scoring drives to take the lead in the third quarter. RB Cyris Filteo, who averaged 2.5 yards a carry, was starting to see some daylight, but it was defensive starter Marcus Selzler in at fullback who added the Scot's 2nd touchdown of the game - another 1 yard dive across the goal line that took several would-be tacklers along for a ride.

WR Antonio Stillwell would haul in a 42 yard pass from Fountain and surefooted sophomore kicker Gavin Dalziel would put the Scots up 24 - 21 when he connected on a 22-yard field goal. At that point the momentum had definitely shifted in favor of the Scots and the home crowd erupted with excitement.

Sophomore kicker Gavin Dalziel sends the game into OT

Snohomish RB Tyler Massena, who left early in the game with what appeared to be an ankle injury, emerged in the 4th quarter and led a nine-play, 64-yard scoring drive with six carries that put Snohomish back in front 27-24 with :49 secs. to play.

After 2 back-to-back timeouts by the visitors, meant to "ice" the Sophomore Kicker, Dalziel sent the game into overtime with a clutch 40-yard field goal at the end of regulation.

Eventually Snohomish relied on what could be considered their only offensive weapon of the night to dot the "i" in win when Massena scored his fifth rushing touchdown giving Snohomish a thrilling 33-27 WesCo 3A South victory.

Call it intestinal fortitude, call it bravery, call it courage. Whatever you want to call it, the Shorecrest Scots played one of their best games in a very long time. Down at the half they mounted a comeback like none seen in quite some time. A game that came down to the wire and really could have gone either way.

Be proud Highlanders. Be Highlander Proud!

Going into the game this week versus the Everett Seagulls, Shorewood coach Brandon Torrey knew the game would be won or lost at the line of scrimmage.

“Everett has a lot of tough kids that never give up. It’s extremely important that we take care of the ball and create a new line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball.”

Shorewood has a fairly experienced offense line, anchored by senior Tres Zeigler, but they are extremely undersized when compared to other schools. Same story on the defensive side of the ball - the T-birds often lineup a nose guard who weighs around 190 pounds.

With a smaller line, success will come by blocking angles and pulling lineman in order to create running lanes for the back - seldom will you be able to stuff it down someone's throat in smash mouth football.

Speed becomes the defining factor on the defensive line - you take your quicker lineman and seek to use explosiveness off the ball to avoid getting locked into a block and seek to disrupt the run behind the line of scrimmage.

At the end of the first half - Shorewood was losing the battle at the line of scrimmage. Everett had a cadre of talented and disruptive offensive and defensive lineman and were winning the battle at the point of contact - pushing the T-bird defensive line back a few yards, and overpowering the Shorewood offensive lineman while the Seagulls bull rushed into the backfield.

Coach Torrey is a former offensive lineman, having played at Western Washington University and he must have put something in the halftime gatorade, or truly invoked the need to win the battle upfront, for both the offensive and defensive line came out in the second half and gave the T-birds the spark needed to turn the game around and record a solid victory.

In the 3rd quarter - Everett lined up for a punt around their own 25.

The snap sailed high over the punter's head and rolled to the end zone - the punter, in a moment of panic, tried to cover the ball, but then inexplicably decided to try and kick the ball off the ground.

Safety Shorewood and the score was now Everett 13 - Shorewood 9.

Offensively in the 2nd half - the T-birds went to the air, with senior quarterback David Snell hitting his cadre of sure-handed receivers - putting two TD’s onto the board to include a great catch by junior Spencer Osborn who leaped into the air between two Seagull defenders - brought down the catch and scampered in for a 30 yard touchdown.

Defensively - the T-birds adopted a swarm mentality, with the defensive line getting great pressure on Everett as they fell behind and were forced to go to the air. The Seagull running game which shredded the Shorewood front seven in the first half - had no answer in the second, as the white jerseys and blue numbers of the defense showed yet again, a bend, but not break attitude and nose for the ball.

The night was capped by a Shorewood secondary pick 6 - their second in the last two games, as junior strong safety Kody Carpenter took the interception back for a 30 yard score.

The Shorewood Thunderbirds are on a roll and won the battle of the birds - as the victory soured Everett’s homecoming celebrations.

A few notes:
  • Shorewood has not started 4-1 since 2002 - also the last time they made it to the week 10 preliminary state play-in game;
  • In Shorewood's 4 victory’s to date - Shorewood has outscored its opponents by 114 points - with an average victory margin of 28 points;
  • Through 5 games - Shorewood has scored more points than they did in their 3 previous full seasons - total points scored for 2017 - 150 / 2016 - 98 / 2015 - 150;
  • Since 1997 - Shorewood is 13-5 against the Lynnwood Royals - next week’s opponent - but have dropped the last 3 meetings - including a 52-6 loss in 2016.

The battle for the top spots continue to shake out at the mid-way point in the season.

Snohomish sits atop the WesCo 3A South standings after a thrilling 33-27 overtime victory over Shorecrest.

Snohomish is now 3-0 in league play followed by Shorewood at 3-1.

Shorewood plays Lynnwood next Friday night - October 6, 2018 at 7pm at Shoreline District Stadium.

Lynnwood comes into the game 0-5, but should not be overlooked - the Royals have played competitively all year.

It proved to be everything a rivalry game should be. The cheers of the crowds. The thumping of the bass drums. Parents in school gear and students with faces painted.

As the savory smell of popcorn wafted through the crowd - it all came together into a culmination of excitement and anticipation of what the night would hold. And the night turned out to be everything the Shorewood Thunderbirds had worked for and hoped it would be - a huge ‘W’ when the final whistle was blown and grasping the Shoreline Rotary Cup for the first time in three years.

The game was closer than the final score would seem - with a tight defensive battle seesawing back and forth through the end of the first half until it began to break for Shorewood.

Shorecrest entered the game at 3-0 led by junior quarterback Eladio Fountain (6’2/240) who had administered an accurate and potent passing attack through the first 3 games of the year. The feeling seemed to be Shorewood would be an obstacle, but would not stand in the way from the Scots starting 4-0.

The Thunderbirds of Shorewood had other plans for the evening and powered by the bright Friday night lights, and the cameras of King 5’s Game of the Week - sought to prove their 2-1 record was not a fluke. (See the Game of the Week segment here)

Shorewood and Shorecrest both showed strength in defense during the first half. Each team struggled to find an offensive rhythm and to move the ball down the field. Shorecrest had a few promising drives with the help of short runs by #22 senior running back Cyris Filoteo (5’3/147) but the Shorewood defense made him pay for each yard.

Shorecrest began to put together a promising drive at the end of the first half - with Fountain finding his receivers within the Shorewood zone and a score looked imminent. Dropping back with 6 seconds left on the game clock, Fountain faced pressure from the Shorewood defensive line, stepped to his left and lofted a bomb down the field.

As the ball sailed - #2 senior strong safety Jaro Rouse (6’2/185) streaked out of center field and snatched the ball from the outstretched arms of the Shorecrest receiver and he was off for a 60 yard scamper down the right sideline, easily outpacing the Shorecrest offense, who looked stunned by the speed of the Shorewood free safety. Time expired and Shorewood was up 7-0 at half and took a tremendous momentum boost into the locker room.

The Shorewood defense came up big again in the 3rd quarter, at the 2:34 mark, as senior #53 Tres Zeigler, (5’10/215) who anchors the offensive line at center and moved to outside linebacker on defense, came up with a huge interception of a Fountain pass on the Shorewood 15, returning the ball to the 27.

Zeigler and his teammates were ecstatic - and the defense denied Shorecrest again in the red zone. Two plays later, senior #4 David Snell (6’3/175) hit a streaking senior, #5, Joseph Williamson (5’9/165) for a 73 yard touchdown pass, and Williamson went untouched into the end zone and Shorewood went up 14-0.

After holding Shorecrest on downs at the end of the 3rd quarter, Shorewood took over on their own 26 and began to move down the field. Facing a 4th and 12 - Shorewood lined up for a punt, but Coach Brandon Torrey went to his bag of tricks and senior #22 Kaden Graves (6’3/225) took the direct snap and hit junior #12 Spencer Osborn (6’1/165) in the right flat and a first down, keeping the Shorewood drive alive.

Shorecrest held and Shorewood lined up for a 35 yard field goal on the Shorecrest 21. And, due to the fact Shorewood has found an absolute gem in first year kicker, junior #18 Alex Lim (5’8/140) easily booted a 35 yard field goal and Shorewood began to pound the final nails into this game, 17-0.

And the Shorewood fans went wild!

With 1:37 left to play, Shorewood sacked Fountain on 4th and 18 and took over on the Shorecrest 45. Senior #3 Robert Banks (5’8/160), who had been bottled up for most of the night, took his 15th handoff and broke over right guard for a 45 yard touchdown. A fitting end to a well fought and well played game by both teams.

A few observations:
  • Shorewood’s secondary is a definite strength. Cornerback Spencer Osborn is an absolute monster on the corner, using sound technique and strength to shut down passing lanes and leveling hard hits on run support. Coupled with senior cornerback Skyler Hammer, Jaro Rouse, and junior Kody Carpenter - Shorewood might just have its own Legion of Boom.
  • After getting shredded last week by the running attack of Snohomish, the Shorewood front 7 showed a better nose for the ball this week. On most run plays, Shorecrest runners were hit within 1 to 2 yards of the line of scrimmage and often in the backfield.
  • Senior quarterback David Snell is coming into his own - once again, although not lighting up the passing attack this week, he demonstrated a sound maturity and did not try to force the ball when a play was not there.
  • Shorewood had no turnovers.
  • Shorewood played a complete game, on all three fronts. Playing all four quarters has often provided difficult in the past for the T-birds - but Coach Torrey has been preaching completeness in effort and it definitely showed this week.
  • The last time Shorewood started 3-1 was in 2002 when the team finished 6-4 and made its last trip to the play-offs.
  • 2002 was also the last time Shorewood recorded two shutouts in a season.
  • In four games, Shorewood has now scored more points than it did in all of the 2016 season.

Shorewood plays next Friday night in Everett against the Everett Seagulls (1-3 Overall / 1-2 WesCo South) and Shorecrest squares off against Snohomish (2-2 Overall / 2-0 WesCo South). This season is shaping up to be an interesting one, as the league's eminent powers find the standings reversed with Edmonds-Woodway and Meadowdale looking up at Shorewood and Shorecrest sitting atop the standings.

Everett Herald: Shoreline teams are creating buzz

Friday, September 21, 2018

Thursday's Everett Herald has an extended analysis of the Shoreline football teams by Cameron Van Til, complete with photos of players from both Shorewood and Shorecrest.

SHORELINE — There’s always plenty of excitement in the Shoreline community for the annual Rotary Cup football game between Shorecrest and Shorewood high schools.
But there’s certainly an added buzz surrounding this year’s rivalry clash.
The two long-struggling programs each have claimed a signature victory over a perennial league power and are off to strong starts this season heading into Friday night’s contest at Shoreline Stadium.
In fact, this is the first time since at least 2004 that both teams enter the Rotary Cup with winning records.

Shorewood looks to break 3 game Rotary Cup losing streak against crosstown rival Shorecrest

By Aaron Bert

Rivalry week! It doesn’t matter if you wear the Blue and Green of Shorewood or the Gold and Forest Green of Shorecrest. Rivalry week recognizes the spirit of competition and community togetherness which defines Shoreline.

On Friday, the Shorewood Thunderbirds square off against the Shorecrest Scots. This game marks the battle for the Rotary Cup and has been a staple of the regular season between the two schools since 1976.

As of late, the Scots have dominated the series - winning the last three meetings - but this year, it might be time to bring the cup back across Aurora Avenue to Shorewood. Shorecrest is riding high - coming into the game on a 3 game winning streak led by a very competent and capable offense. Shorewood enters the game at 2-1, having shown some real potential this season amongst a team determined to turnaround a streak of losing seasons.

Coach Brandon Torrey is coaching in his fourth Rotary Cup and stated, “Bringing the Rotary Cup back to Shorewood would be incredible for our kids, school, and community. Our focus is on executing at a high level and playing for one another.”

Coach Torrey has been getting the team fired up this week - emphasizing the need for togetherness and focusing on never giving up the fight.

As for members of the senior class - who have never hoisted the Rotary Cup in victory at the final whistle, they feel their time is now and they are due for the win.

Kick-off is at 7pm at Shoreline District Stadium - come early for a good seat and get ready for the always entertaining battle of the dueling drum lines at halftime.
