Scots overall record:  4-2
Conference record: 1-2

Shorecrest running back Ricardo Ruiz continued his standout season under the bright lights at Everett Memorial on Friday night as his Scots faced the Everett Seagulls in a 3A South matchup.

But even Ruiz’s masterful performance, in which he carried the ball 21 times for 217 yards and a touchdown, wasn’t enough to beat the ‘Gulls. Everett prevailed, mainly with a ground game that produced 391 yards of offense and three touchdowns.

Everett opened the scoring with a touchdown late in the first quarter to take a 7-0 lead. But Shorecrest evened up the score with a 24 yard strike from quarterback Eladio Fountain to Antonio Stillwell.

After Everett scored again with a Christian Ballmer touchdown run from the nine yard line, the Scots responded with a 37 yard romp by Ruiz to go up 14-13. But from then on, it was all Gulls, as Everett’s Dakota Brodel picked off a Fountain pass at his own two and took it 98 yards for the score to go up 19-14, taking a lead that was never relinquished.

Along with Ruiz, Rico Dellaguardia was another bright spot for Shorecrest, with 140 yards receiving on four catches. Ruiz’s total brought him to over 800 yards on the season, with 11 touchdowns.

The Scots are back home at Shoreline Stadium next Friday night, September 22nd, at 8:00 against Snohomish.

To be or not to be... a junior football referee?

Junior football referee

To be or not to be... a junior football referee?

It's a fair question really. Given that a lot of parents don't have the time or perhaps the desire to volunteer, the old adage "Somebody has to do it" certainly applies.

Somebody does HAVE to do it and quite often that "somebody" is learning the game just like the team for whom you are cheering.

If you think the fees for your child's extracurricular activities are expensive now, try paying for the type of professional you wish was calling your little guy's game.

Exactly why would a perfectly sane human being subject themselves to abuse from both sides at the same time?

Even a politician has friends on one side(line) or the other. It may be for the attention they receive, the ability to control a situation, they may simply like the way they look in black and white stripes?

It certainly isn't for the money.

Whatever the reason that may compel someone to spend an entire day getting screamed at by coaches, parents, grandparents and, all too often, the players themselves, it can hardly be worth it.

We're all guilty of thinking we could do a better job. We all secretly wish we had our very own whistle, but realistically, not all of us are that crazy.

To be or not to be a junior football referee, that IS the question. The answer to which is yes... and please!

Why? Because we need you. Because despite what we tell ourselves and our fellow parents, we really couldn't do a better job and because even though you need glasses and haven't read the rules since Walter Camp made them up, the success of our season depends entirely upon you.

Good calls, bad calls, we'll take them. They help our young men to deal with life's joys and disappointments. They teach our players to appreciate that with which they have absolutely no control and finally, bad calls especially, teach our young men (and sometimes women) that at this level anyway, it's just a game.

Shorecrest C Team

I share this story in an effort to encourage the kids like me. The kids who want to play, the kids who never miss a practice, the kids who put in the time and the effort.

By Rob Oxford
Highlander Football Gridiron Group

After watching Thursday night's C-Team game, I felt compelled to share my experience with Freshman Football.

I entered the 9th grade a year behind a brother who graduated as an All-District Defensive Lineman, Team Captain and a State (of Texas) Wrestling Champion.

Truth be told, I didn't even want to play football anymore. All that running, sweating, getting yelled at by coaches every day, missing out on afternoon shenanigans with my friends, only to stand on the sidelines for 4 quarters on Wednesday Nights?

There were 2 instances when I might have a chance to see some action, up by 4 touchdowns or down by 6. But I continued to play, partly because I was told girls love a man in a uniform and partly because I wanted to please my Dad.

I remember thinking "I'm better than some of those guys"...but I wasn't. I could be, but I wasn't. So I kept trying. During games I would stand right next to the coach with my helmet on.

"Can I go in?" I kept asking, "Can I go in Coach?" Nope! Not yet.

10th Grade ... same thing, but I kept at it. Then in 11th Grade I finally got my shot. A kid broke his collarbone during the 2nd or 3rd week of practice and I hate to admit it but I was ecstatic.

I'd love to tell you I started (Center) and the coaches regretted not putting me in sooner, but that's not the case. However, I did my job and I did it well. All those times practicing against bigger kids, standing on the sidelines listening to the coaches tell the starters what they did wrong paid off.

I even got my name in the local paper. Was my Dad pleased? Not really. He thought I should've been a starter long before now, but I was pleased and so were my teammates and friends, especially my GIRLfriend.

I share this story in an effort to encourage the kids like me. The kids who want to play, the kids who never miss a practice, the kids who put in the time and the effort.

Believe me, it doesn't go unnoticed. I know it gets tiresome hearing the coaches say "you're making the starters better", but it does, you are, and your time will come.

The best part is when you've earned their respect, they listen to you and sometimes when you tell them you think you'd be a better tight end, they give you a chance to prove it.

Shorecrest Scots football win big over Lynnwood Royals

Rico Dellaguardia scoring

Shorecrest 46 - Lynnwood 7
Friday, 9-22-2017 at Edmonds Woodway Stadium
Overall record: 3-1

Text and photos by Gordon Stephenson

The visiting Shorecrest Scots racked up a season high 533 total yards of offense on Friday night, crushing the Lynnwood Royals in a Wesco South matchup at Edmonds Stadium. The Scots improved their record to 3-1 overall, while the Royals remained winless, at 0-4.

Sammy Seliga pulls in a touchdown pass

Running back Ricardo Ruiz continued his breakout season and did his best Tim Riggins impression, running for three touchdowns and 138 yards on 18 carries, and adding a fourth score on a reception from quarterback Eladio Fountain.

Many contributed to the bounty: Sammy Seliga and Antonio Stillwell pulled in touchdown passes and Cyrus Filoteo, a transfer from Odea this season, added a rushing touchdown to his resume for the Scot's final score in the fourth quarter. Seliga led all receivers with 90 yards on three receptions and Senior Chris Lee continued to be a prime target, with six catches and 83 yards.

#8 Brayden Victor makes an acrobatic interception

Once again, the Scot's defense proved decisive, holding the Royals to only 118 total yards of offense, including a stingy six yards on 24 carries on the ground. James Huffman led with six solo tackles and Senior Brayden Victor stopped an early Lynnwood drive with an acrobatic interception.

Senior receiver and defensive back Rico Dellaguardia should have shown more on the stats line in this game, as he scored twice on highlight-worthy runs from deep in Scot's territory, only to have both touchdowns called back on penalties. That makes four times this season Dellaguardia has found paydirt, only to have the effort nullified by offensive flags.

Don't miss Shorecrest's next game, next Friday night at 7pm at home at Shoreline Stadium. The Scots face their cross town rivals, the Shorewood Thunderbirds, in their annual rivalry with the Rotary Cup at stake.

Shorecrest Scots footballers fall to Meadowdale's Mavericks

Shorecrest 13 - Meadowdale 31
Friday, 9-15-2017 at Shoreline Stadium
Overall record: 2-1

The Shorecrest Scots led into the third quarter in this Wesco 3A South matchup against Meadowdale, but three second half touchdowns by the visiting Mavericks sealed their 31-13 victory, and improved their record to 2-1 on the season.

Shorecrest was an undefeated 2-0 coming into the night and went to the ground early.

The game's leading rusher, Ricardo Ruiz, rumbled for 104 yards on 23 carries.

But it was two deep strikes to senior Chris Lee that provided the Scots with their touchdowns. In the first quarter, quarterback Eladio Fountain hit Lee in full stride streaking up the west sideline for a 47 yard score. Lee followed up early in the third by pulling in his slant route pass at Shorecrest's own 35 yard line and turning on the afterburners for a 73 yard touchdown. Lee finished with 147 yards receiving on five catches.

It was the Scot's defense that controlled the first half of the game with standout performances from Gavin McFarlane, who led his squad with eight tackles, and sophomore James Huffman, who also recorded eight takedowns. Senior Brayden Victor added four tackles, and had a key fumble recovery in the first quarter to end a Mavericks drive.

Down 13-10 in the second half Meadowdale quarterback Nate Hebert turned the tide when he found receiver Justin Jackson on two 22 yard touchdown throws, and added a third score of his own with a scamper into the end zone from eight yards out.

The Scots are back in action next Friday night, September 22nd, with the early game at 5:00 at Edmonds Stadium against conference rival Lynnwood High School.

Shorecrest Scots football scores near perfect game against Kingston

Shorecrest 58 - Kingston 6
Friday, 9-8-2017 at Shorecrest
Overall record 2-0

By Gordon Stephenson

On a perfect September night, the Shorecrest Scots put together a nearly perfect game over Kingston, winning 58-6 over a Buccaneers squad that was overmatched from the opening whistle.

It was the defense that scored first, with Gabe Reyes sacking Kingston quarterback Nick Waxon in his own end zone for a safety that put the Scots up 2-0. From then on, there was no looking back. Before the first quarter was out, Scots QB Eladio Fountain had three scoring throws: To Sammy Seliga for a 21 yard touchdown; Chris Lee from 22 yards out; and to Rico Dellaguardia.

Ricardo Ruiz, following up on his heroic performance last week at Interlake, in which he scored the winning touchdown in overtime, added another TD to his expanding stat list, this one from six yards out. Cyrus Filoteo, the night's leading rusher with 57 yards on six carries, finished out the quarter with a score from the four yard line, capping a feverish 12 minutes of play, and leaving the Scots up 30-0.

Coach Brandon Christensen took the opportunity to play well into his roster, giving many players a chance to show what they can do at the varsity level. Opening the second quarter, Filoteo scored again, this time from four yards out. Junior quarterback John Stephenson added a touchdown throw of his own, hitting Antonio Stillwell in the endzone for a 15 yard strike. Sophomore Diego Angel-Cruz ran for scores from 20 and 35 yards out and Sophomore Tony Garcia-Cruz was perfect as the kicker, making all eight of his PAT attempts for the night.

The defense controlled the pace for of much of the game, wreaking havoc with the Kingston offense and causing five turnovers, including two interceptions, one each by Layne Lyons and senior Brayden Victor. 19 individual Scots contributed tackles, led by Latrell Jones, who had six solo takedowns, and Sam Jacoby, who contributed 5 tackles. The Buc's were held to just 36 yards of total offense, but prevented the shutout with a perfect last second scoring pass by Waxon from 15 yards out as time expired.

The 52 point win was Shorecrest's largest margin of victory in over a decade, and gives them a 2-0 start to their 2017 campaign. Celebration won't last long, however, as the Scots prepare for next week's home game at 7pm against Meadowdale.

It's likely that even the most rabid of Shorewood football fans figured their team would find tough sledding Friday night as they hosted Snohomish in the T-Birds' Homecoming Game. All hope for an upset disappeared as the Panthers raced to a 35-0 lead after the first quarter, on their way to a 63-21 win, but the T-Birds still managed to thrill their fans with some exciting plays that showed the grit and tenacity that their team possesses.

T-Bird Alex Tsolmon eyes the Snohomish defensive back coming up on him.

It was a festive air that greeted Shorewood fans, as in addition to it being Homecoming, it was also Senior Night for the players and cheerleaders, who were honored prior to the game for their commitment and dedication to their respective roles.

At the end of the first quarter, local icon Wayne Pridemore was recognized for his years of service as the unofficial Shorewood photographer. His photos frequently grace your computer screens in this space. With the graduation of his granddaughter Tabitha coming this spring, Wayne will be a far less frequenter of Shorewood events.

Shorewood's Justin Cho runs behind his team mate Kevin Hirohata's block on the Snohomish linebacker.

Just before the end of the half, SW fans came out of their seats when senior Justin Cho raced 62 yards for a touchdown.

Senior Devin Diaz scored the second SW TD, this coming from seven yards out in the third quarter.

Cho capped the game's scoring in the fourth quarter, electrifying the crowd with a 91-yard touchdown run that left the fans buzzing (and Cho huffing and puffing).

Shorewood's  linebacker, Ray Davis #13, reaches for the Snohomish running back on a sweep play.
Also closing in for the tackle was #3 Alex Tsolmon and #55 Chase Crowell.

Credit to Snohomish's coaching staff for their excellent display of sportsmanship by sitting their starters after the first quarter, allowing many of their younger players the thrill of getting meaningful playing time under the glare of the Friday night lights. No reasonable and knowledgeable fan could accuse the Panthers of running up the score and putting a damper on what proved to be a fun night for all.

At half time both teams bands, flag teams, drill teams,

Both schools' bands then took the field and filled the night air with music, playing both teams' fight songs together.

The T-Birds got on the scoreboard following a SC turnover in the third quarter when Ryan Farley boomed an impressive 44-yard field goal for SW's only points of the night.
