Geoff Vlcek was delighted to find two girls in the PeeWee division - Dakota from the Edmonds Warriors Jr Football PeeWees, and Abby from Richmond Junior Football.

She and Dakota have inspired women who play in the WFA on the Everett Reign so they are going to come to one of each of their games to meet them and show some support for them!

Brandon Torrey hired as Shorewood T-Bird football coach

Monday, March 16, 2015

Shorewood High School and the Shoreline School District are pleased to announce Brandon Torrey as their new varsity head football coach. Torrey replaces Rob Petschl who resigned in February after five years as the T-Birds Head Coach.

This will be Torrey’s first head football assignment. However, he is no stranger to Shorewood, the WESCO Conference or area football. Torrey worked as an assistant on T- Bird football coaching staff the past two years. Prior to that he was an assistant coach at Edmonds-Woodway High School. Torrey, a Nationally Board Certified Physical Educator, is also a Physical Education teacher at Shorewood.

Although we were disappointed to accept coach Petschl’s resignation, we are grateful that he and his staff worked hard to grow the Shorewood football program. And we strongly believe that hiring Brandon Torrey, a certificated teacher in the building, will continue to bring the program back to relevance in the WESCO Conference.

Brandon has put significant thought into taking this big step in his first head coaching assignment and has a plan in place for the team.

We are looking forward to a long run with Brandon leading the T-Bird football program.

Frank Workman on Sports: Rob Petschl steps down as Shorewood football coach

Wednesday, February 4, 2015

2013: Shoreline district athletic director, Don Dalziel, presents
the Shoreline Rotary Cup to Shorewood Head Coach Rob Petschl

By Frank Workman

Being a Head Football Coach at the high school level is beyond a full-time job.

During the season, the hours are long, emotions high, demands many. Administrative duties don't allow for much of a let-up during the off-season, either.

But when a coach already has a full-time job, sometimes there just aren’t enough hours in the day to put in a decent performance at either, much less both.

Add to the mix the devotion, time and energy required to be a great husband and father of three kids, it's a miracle anybody signs up for the task.

Such was the case with Shorewood's Head Coach Rob Petschl who has resigned his position after five years at the helm of the T-Birds' football program.

Coach Petschl tendered his resignation Tuesday afternoon.

He gathered his team on Wednesday for what turned out to be a tearful and heartfelt goodbye to the seventy-plus players in the program.

“It is time for me to make a change for my family. This has been a great experience with great kids," said Coach Petschl.
“Thanks are in order to many people. The in-building administration of Principal Dunbar, Mrs. Swanson and Mrs. Gorman have been extremely supportive for all 5 years.”  Petschl also praised his coaches. “I'm proud of my coaching staff and all the work they did for the program. They are a very hard working group.
“The majority of our practices for my five years were at Shoreline Stadium, where I got the opportunity to experience the best district staff in the state in Don Dalziel and Vicki Klein, who couldn’t have been more supportive and accommodating. This entire community is great and I wish them the best of luck", Petschl said.

Petschl took over a struggling program, and while his 12-38 record may not sound like much, the increased number of players his ebullient and positive personality was able to add would indicate that he's leaving Shorewood football in a better position than where he found it.

At the beginning of his tenure, Shorewood had only 36 varsity players turn out for the team.  Five years later, that number had grown to 59.

If nothing else, Petschl will point with pride to his T-Birds' victories in the last two Rotary Cup Games against Shorecrest, snapping the Scots' nine-game winning streak in the crosstown rivalry.

Shorewood to play at Everett Thursday for 11th, 12th places in Wesco 3A football

Wednesday, October 29, 2014

Shorewood takes a 2-6 football record (1-5 Western Conference 3A South) into a game at Everett (0-8, 0-5 Wesco 3A North) Thursday.

Shorewood and Everett, the sixth-place teams in the two divisions, will play for 11th and 12th places in the Wesco 3A.

The top five Wesco 3A teams qualify for quad-district play along with either the No. 6 Wesco 3A team or Ferndale of the Northwest Conference. The six Northwest District qualifiers will play Nov. 7 or 8 games against teams from the Sea-King, West Central or Southwest districts.

The Thunderbirds and Everett meet at 7pm Thursday at Everett Memorial Stadium.

The game is a rematch of the Sept. 5 season-opening game, which Shorewood won, 30-14.

Shorewood will finish its season Nov. 7, with a home game against 4A Cascade of Everett.

Shorecrest to play in 2A district football playoffs despite 0-8 record

Tuesday, October 28, 2014

The football team at Shorecrest High School, which has dropped this fall from the 3A classification to 2A, will get a berth in the quad-district 2A playoffs Nov. 7-8 despite the team’s 0-8 regular-season record (0-6 Western Conference 3A/2A South).

The Northwest District gets eight 2014 quad-district spots. Shorecrest, the only 2A team in Wesco, gets one district spot, while three will come from the five 2A teams in the Cascade Conference and four from the eight Northwest Conference 2A teams.

Winners of each of the 14 quad-district games, games that match teams from the Northwest, Sea-King, West Central and Southwest districts, qualify for the state 2A round of 16 Nov. 14-15.

While Shorecrest gets an automatic district berth, the team will be seeded eighth from the Northwest District because of the Scots’ placing last in the Wesco 3A/2A South Division. Lower seeded teams play higher teams from other districts, with each game played near the home of the higher seeded team.

The path will be harder in 2015, when the district will have only six quad-district berths. Shorecrest then will need to place sixth or higher in the seven-team Wesco 3A South to qualify for the quad-district round, with seeding again depending on place in the division.

Shorecrest’s volleyball and soccer teams need to place 11th or higher in the 13-team Wesco 3A/2A division to qualify for the eight-team district tournament, with four district teams advancing to state this year and three advancing next year.

Shorecrest football has difficulty with Meadowdale in Friday game

Saturday, October 25, 2014

From our friends at Lynnwood Today

Senior Malik Braxton caught a pass for a touchdown and returned an interception for a score as Meadowdale demolished Shorecrest 48-0 in a Wesco 3A South football game Friday night at Shoreline Stadium.

The Mavericks (6-0 in the league, 7-1 overall) scored 24 points in the first quarter. Rory Spillum ran in for an 8-yard TD to get Meadowdale started. Braxton caught a 15-yard pass from quarterback Caleb Tingstad and then Tingstad connected on a 20-yard touchdown pass to Charlie White. Brett Schafer then added a 40-yard field goal.

In the second quarter, Tingstad ran for a 5-yard touchdown run and Braxton returned an interception 60 yards for a score. Schafer booted a 35-yard field goal and Bryce Chapman recovered a fumble in the end zone for a TD in the fourth quarter. The Scots fell to 0-6 and 0-8.

Lynnwood defeats Shorewood football in Friday game

From our friends at Lynnwood Today

By David Pan

It was a happy Homecoming and Senior Night for running back Andrew Katzenberger and his teammates as Lynnwood defeated Shorewood 30-21 in a Wesco 3A South football game Friday night at Edmonds Stadium.

Katzenberger rushed for 220 yards on 23 carries and ran for a TD and caught a pass for a score.

Friday’s game was the first time the Lynnwood senior standout has played on offense in three games. A shoulder injury limited Katzenberger to defense.

“I wanted to play my Senior Night,” Katzenberger said.

Lynnwood coach Keauntea Bankhead was glad to see Katzenberger back on offense. The Royals (2-4 in the league, 4-4 overall) snapped a three-game losing streak.

“As you saw, we missed him,” Bankhead said. “He was our MVP today. He’s a great player. He’s playing three levels ahead of guys out there. He’s our horse. We’re glad to have him back.”

It’s been a long time since Lynnwood has won four games in a season and also took home the victory in a homecoming game, Katzenberger said.

“I’m so proud to be a Royal,” he added.

Lynnwood appeared to be coasting to victory with an 18-0 lead with just over four minutes left in the third quarter. But Shorewood (1-5, 2-6) responded with a pair of touchdowns to cut the deficit to 18-15 with seven minutes left in the contest.

The Royals, however, regrouped and finished strong with two touchdowns to seal the victory.

“We had a team come out and put together a string of plays together,” Bankhead said of the Thunderbirds’ rally. “Those plays we were able to come back from and we kept our foot on the gas and our guys finished. They play hard and they play four quarters of football.”

Lynnwood took a 6-0 lead on a 14-yard pass from quarterback Justin Cachopo to Katzenberger in the first quarter. Running back Mikao Kirkman added to Lynnwood’s lead with a 5-yard run in the second quarter. In the third quarter, Darney Duplessis scored on a 7-yard run as the Royals took an 18-0 lead.

Shorewood finally got on the board late in the third quarter on a 26-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Aaron Okamura to wide receiver Bostyn Vordahl and a successful 2-point conversion cut the deficit to 18-8.

The momentum shifted back to Lynnwood when Katzenberger appeared to score on a 78-yard run in the fourth quarter but the play was called back to holding.

On the very next play, Vordahl picked off a Lynnwood pass and ran it back 25 yards as the Thunderbirds closed to 18-15.

Lynnwood answered with an 18-yard touchdown run by Katzenberger and then Carson Hoerner picked off a Shorewood pass deep in Thunderbirds’ territory. Lucas Jungmann then scored on a 12-yard run to boost Lynnwood’s lead to 30-15.

Okamura found Vordahl on a 3-yard scoring strike but Shorewood wasn’t able to convert on the 2-point attempt and trailed 30-21. Lynnwood recovered the ensuing on-side kick and ran out the clock.

“That was a nail biter,” Bankhead said. “It feels good to get out from that slump that we were in, three in a row. But you know, we played three good teams back to back to back.

“It’s Senior Night and Homecoming. All week I just stressed effort and focus … There are a lot of emotions going on before the game. Parents were out there on the field. We wanted our guys to come out and enjoy it.”

After Isaac Whitaker's 35-yard field goal with seven seconds remaining in the first half gave the T-Birds a 3-0 halftime lead, Reed Kopec hauled in a 15-yard TD pass from Okamura midway in the third quarter. Hassan Kone tacked on a 13-yard run to paydirt two minutes later to close the scoring in the third quarter.

Versatile Bostyn Vordahl ran the ball in on an end sweep on the final quarter's first play to extend the Shorewood lead to 24-0. With 9:20 to play, Okamura scampered in from 33 yards to make it 31-0.

Back-up Scots quarterback Jack Koss got the Scots on the board with a 37-yard TD pass to Brantle Harris, preventing a shutout.

The T-Birds scored a safety with less than two minutes to play to end the scoring at 33-7.

Frank Workman on Sports: The Big Game

Thursday, September 25, 2014

By Frank Workman

In the moments leading up to the 7pm kickoff Friday night in the Rotary Cup Game between Shorecrest and Shorewood, a perfect confluence of energy, enthusiasm, and emotion will merge to create an electricity that all those in attendance will never forget.

The biggest annual gathering in Shoreline will be comprised of a cross-section of humanity from the immediate area.

Students from each school will try their best to out-do each other, both in school-colored garb (with face paint to match) and hoarse throats.

Band members from each school will be ready to blast their teams’ fight songs at full blast, equating volume with quality.

Parents of the players will watch intently, their emotions mixed. Many would grudgingly, if not gladly, trade in a victory for their team for assurance that their own son emerge uninjured from the fray.

Some moms and dads will be bringing their grade school kids to their first high school football game, and they’ll marvel at the wide-eyes and broad smiles on their kids’ faces as they take in the whole grand spectacle. Those same moms and dads will take a minute and recall when they were back in school, and they’ll remember a long forgotten memory of Friday nights in their youthful days.

Seemingly ever single junior high student in the district will be in attendance, as if an extra-credit reward was being offered by their teachers. Oddly, none of them will even sit down for a minute, and hardly any of them will even face the field, much less watch the game. But they will observe how their elders (the HS students) dress and behave.

Down on the field, the players will have churning stomachs and dry mouths – hopeful and fearful at the same time. Hopeful of a win, and perhaps to wear the mantle of ‘hero’ at night’s end; fearful of defeat and being remembered (if only by himself) for the rest of his life for costing his team the victory.

And then eleven boys from each team will take the field - one team to kick off, the other to receive. The referee will blow his whistle.

One player will approach the ball in his run-up to kicking it away.

And the biggest crowd of the year will rise to their feet, the fans will feel a charge go through their bodies, and electricity will be in the air.

After that, it’s anybody’s ballgame.

Rotary Cup Friday night - game of the week, barbeque, after-party for teens

Ok readers - all that clicking did the trick. Shorecrest / Shorewood will be the KING 5 News Big Game of the Week. Live reports will begin at 4:45pm Friday from Shoreline Stadium. The Game of the Week features on-site pre and post-game coverage.

The game will be televised live on the Shoreline Education Access channel 26 (Comcast) or 36 (Frontier) and streamed live on the Web on US Education TV with Frank Workman calling the action. The game is produced by the Live Video Club comprised of students from both high schools.

The annual Rotary Cup football game between Shorecrest and Shorewood will kick off at 7pm Friday, Sept. 26 at Shoreline Stadium on the Shoreline Center campus, NE 185th St and 1st NE.

What's the opposite of sticker-shock?  High school football tickets only cost $6 for adults; $3 for students and seniors (62+). A family of four gets in for $18. You can't even park your car downtown for $18.

A capacity crowd is expected at Shoreline Stadium, so fans are encouraged to arrive early to find parking and enjoy the pregame barbecue sponsored by the Shorewood Boosters starting at 5:30pm.
Save room for the concession stands -- Best Popcorn In WESCO. Still a bargain at only $1.

Here's a tip: Bring seat cushions or blankets to sit on. The metal bleachers can be unforgiving.

You are asked to watch where you park and avoid neighbors' driveway and designated no-parking areas but don't be afraid to park on side streets. Just remember that drivers will not be expecting pedestrians on the streets themselves!

This is the annual Spirit Night at the stadium, with a commemorative photo of the stands to be taken at halftime

This is the 36th meeting in the series between Shorecrest and Shorewood, with the Scots leading the series 24 to 11.

Parents: if you are not attending the game, but are picking up some kids afterwards .... do yourself a favor. Arrange a pick-up location that is OFF the property, rather than try to swim upstream, coming into a jam-packed parking lot full of cars trying to leave. If you can trust your kids to be by themselves at the game, it figures they can be trusted to cross the street and meet you a block away from the stadium. You'll save 30 minutes off the task.

Or let them go to the chaperoned party and pick them up later. The City of Shoreline Teen Program is hosting a party for high school students, complete with refreshments and DJ after the game from 9 to midnight in the Spartan Gym adjacent to the stadium. Admission is free.

Shorecrest Football rally falls short

Saturday, September 20, 2014

Sammamish HS defeated Shorecrest Friday night at Shoreline Stadium by a 15-7 score.

There was a night-and-day difference between the Shorecrest football team that played the first half compared to the team that played the second half.

The Scots trailed 15-0 at halftime, but then came out full of spit-and-vinegar in the second half and dominated the Totems, only to see their last-minute rally come up short in the end.

Devon Pusey raced through a huge hole with just over 9 minutes to play in the game to cut the lead to 15-7.

The Scots had one last shot at tying the game, getting the ball back with just under one minute to go in the game, but Quarterback Trystan Sanchez was sacked on the final two plays, keeping the Scots out of the end zone and off the scoreboard as time expired.

Shorecrest faces cross-town rival Shorewood next Friday at 7pm in the annual Rotary Cup Game.

Shorewood snapped a Shorecrest 9-game winning streak in the series last season.
