UW Med: Anxiety and depression are related to what we eat

Wednesday, June 21, 2023

Free lectures from Dr. Iman Majd
How and what you eat influences how you think, according to numerous studies.

Dr. Iman Majd will discuss this connection Thursday evening, June 22, 2023 in a free online lecture.

He directs UW Medicine’s Osher Center for Integrative Health and is an associate professor of family medicine at the University of Washington School of Medicine.

“Gut health and brain health are intimately connected, and this is an emerging field that is just coming forward in the recent years,” Majd said.
“Studies have shown that emotions, such as feelings of anxiety and depression, can be affected by the inflammation we have in the gut and is related to what we eat.”

Shoreline gets its own coffee blend at Town and Country Market

Monday, June 5, 2023

Town and Country Markets just announced the launch of its new EveryDay Coffee line with special blends chosen by employees to represent each of its six market locations!

T/C’s EveryDay coffee is fresh, organic, roasted to order in small batches, and ethically and sustainably sourced. Each market’s staff selected their favorite blend of beans to represent the neighborhood so customers can sip like locals. Available in whole bean or pre-ground, each flavor profile stands out among Seattle’s coffee-loving population.

At T/C's employee summit, team members played a key role in selecting the beans, roast and flavor profiles for the company's six coffee varieties.

Starting with 16 different brands, employees helped narrow down the list to four potential vendors based on various criteria. Internal coffee experts and enthusiasts then evaluated the remaining suppliers, ultimately selecting two based on their high-quality product, attributes, and programs.

The two versions were then tested in each market, with employees voting to determine the final selection for their market's coffee, also considering sales and customer preference for the roasts.

“We’re thrilled to continue connecting our employees to the EveryDay line, garnering their input and taste preference for the release of the coffee blends,” said Susan Allen, director of Town and Country Markets.
“The new blends also celebrate our communities, paying homage to each with its unique flavor profile based on local preference. I’m grateful to the team and our partner for playing a crucial role in making these varieties so special.”

The debut of the EveryDay coffee follows the release of T/C’s EveryDay Eggs, Milk (in cartons designed by employees), Honey, and Maple Syrup.

Shoreline Town and Country Market is located at Shoreline Place, 15505 Westminster Way N, Shoreline WA 98133

Vandalism at Calvin Presbyterian destroys food pantry, damages church van and shed

Friday, May 26, 2023

Calvin's food pantry destroyed by vandalism but now being rebuilt.

On Saturday evening, May 20, 2023 Calvin's Little Blue Pantry was significantly damaged so that it needs to be rebuilt. There was also damage done to the church van and shed.

The church reports that
"From the CCTV footage, it seems that the individual who committed the crimes was very angry with himself and the world in general. From what we understand, damage was also done to other property in the surrounding area, so the attack doesn't seem to have targeted the church in particular."

The Little Blue Pantry is being rebuilt will be up and running again very soon.

We're very grateful for the many messages of support that we've received from our community, and we're praying that the person who committed the crime will be held accountable, receive the help they need, and come to know God's love for them.

Calvin Presbyterian is located at 18826 3rd Ave NW, Shoreline, WA 98177 in the Hillwood Neighborhood.

NUHSA reports on The Hunger Cliff

Thursday, March 16, 2023

Diners at Ronald Commons Cafe
From NUHSA (North Urban Human Services Association)

As of March 1, 2023 SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) benefits have been cut back to the their pre-pandemic levels, and many users' monthly food budgets have been slashed close to $100.

Food scarcity in Washington nearly tripled during the pandemic, so food banks - and clients - were feeling the pinch even before the cuts. Potential state proposals (including HB 1784) would not replace the lost benefits, but are only a stop-gap aimed at backfilling an anticipated rise in demand at food banks for the next year or two.

Read more here, and make sure to support our local food banks and providers, including North Helpline, Hopelink, Hunger Intervention Program, and EastWest Food Rescue

Check out food resources and connections at Nourishing Networks Bothell/Kenmore and Nourishing Networks Woodinville, and find a list of Little Free Food Pantries for Shoreline and Lake Forest Park here.

Three hot meal programs are currently operating in Shoreline:
  • Ronald Commons Cafe: free community dinner held 5:30 - 6:45pm every Thursday at Ronald United Methodist Church, 17839 Aurora Ave N, Shoreline, WA 98133.
  • POPY’s Café, a community meal served every Wednesday 5 - 6:30pm at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, 14514 20th Ave NE, Shoreline, WA 98155
  • St. Dunstan's Episcopal Church Community Dinners are provided every Tuesday, 6:00 - 6:30pm,  722 N 145th St, Shoreline.

Alternative holiday main dish: Tofurky

Wednesday, November 23, 2022

Tofurky. Photo by Jacob Metcalf

What are you having for dinner this Thanksgiving Day?

Pictured above is a roasted tofurky - a Thanksgiving main dish for vegans and vegetarians, made from flavored and molded tofu, stuffed with dressing.

This photo is a favorite of contributor, former regular columnist / reporter, and friend of the Editor, Frank Workman. When I first published this photo, around 2010, dedicated carnivore Frank was inspired to contact me to huff and puff about this abomination.

I wrote back to tell him I was so inspired by his response that I would be publishing regular articles - tofu easter eggs, tofu valentine chocolates...

This was the beginning of a wonderful friendship and probably a hundred articles from Frank about sports and people and anything else that caught his attention.

He moved to California and gradually lost contact with the Shorecrest sports scene, but he checks in occasionally with special requests for tofu.

St. Dunstan moves their Community Dinner back inside

Monday, November 14, 2022

Indoor dining at St. Dunstan's

We are ready to put the “community” back in our Community Dinner! For the last two years we have pivoted to offering hot meals in take-out boxes, at 3:30pm.

While this did provide food, we missed the community that was shared as the buffet meal was eaten around tables. Friendships were made and flourished. We have continued to deliver hot meals to local homeless tent encampments during this time and will continue to do that.

We are lining up the volunteers and planning the menu (and calling on our fabulous dishwashing team) to return to an inside meal around community tables on Tuesday, November 15, 2022. Dinner will be served from 5pm to 6:30pm.

This is a free dinner, however donations are always accepted.

Join us on Tuesdays at St. Dunstan’s Episcopal Church – The Church That Feeds People located at 722 N 145th St, Shoreline WA 98133.

Shoreline Schools awarded Farm to School grant

Saturday, October 8, 2022

The Washington State Department of Agriculture has awarded Shoreline School District a $83,838 Farm to School Purchasing Grant for use during the 2022-23 school year.

Shoreline is one of 83 recipients selected across the state to receive this funding, which can be used to purchase fresh produce, grains, and protein from participating producers and to fund equipment and additional labor that may be needed to prepare the food items.

The Shoreline Schools Food and Nutrition Services department has identified more than 20 local farms to purchase food from through the Puget Sound Food Hub

The Puget Sound Food Hub represents many farmers from historically underrepresented communities and upholds the “Good Food Principles” of environmental sustainability, valued workforce, health and nutrition, and animal welfare.

“Our participation with the Puget Sound Food Hub allows Shoreline schools to bring seasonal, sustainably sourced food of high quality directly to the plates of our K-12 students,” says Jessica Jandayan, Director of Food Services and Nutrition.
“With these offerings, we hope to enhance student nutrition, introduce students to unfamiliar foods that they may enjoy, and increase awareness of the importance of sustainable agriculture in our school community.”

Local cheese from a Food Hub member
Student voice was central in the department’s decision to apply for the Farm to School Purchasing Grant.

Most notably, 200 students at Meridian Park Elementary School signed a petition to add more vegan entrees to their menu, and a student coalition from Kellogg Middle School expressed interest in adding more meatless days to help reduce the environmental impact of school meals.

Planned student focus groups will help develop new recipes made with local ingredients and help the Food and Nutrition Services Department be responsive to the evolving needs of students from cultural backgrounds that restrict meat and those with plant-based diets.

“What a wonderful opportunity this Farm to Schools grant offers us to connect our students to the farmers and producers of the food that we all enjoy. Having grown up in the eastern part of the state to parents who were migrant farm workers, this program has a special place in my heart,” shares Superintendent Susana Reyes.
“Kudos to our Food and Nutrition Services staff for qualifying for this grant and for working diligently to make health, wellness, and nutrition education a part of daily life in Shoreline Schools.”

Tart apples from a Food Hub farm
School meals this year have already included local nectarines and sungold tomatoes, and plans are in place to feature pears and honey crisp apples at all K-12 schools’ salad bars this fall.

The district’s first “Farm to School Feast Day” is planned for November 8 at all K-12 schools.

Lunch that day will feature a locally sourced chicken drumstick that will be prepared and roasted in-house by the school district and a dinner roll made from scratch with local flour.

Throughout the current school year, students can expect to enjoy weekly fresh fruits and vegetables and quarterly Feast Days, courtesy of the Farm to School Purchasing Grant and the Shoreline Schools Food and Nutrition Services team.

Meal Charge Procedures

The goal of the school meal program is to provide nutritious meals to students during the school day.

Students may receive breakfast and lunch at no cost to them if they are categorically eligible for free meals or if they qualify for free meals based on federal poverty guidelines.

Sometimes, however, children who do not qualify based on these standards would like a breakfast or lunch but do not have money in their account or in-hand to cover the cost of the meal at the time of the meal service.

The intent of the District Meal Charge Procedures is to ensure responsible financial management of the non-profit food services budget as well as a consistent and transparent student-oriented practice at each school for the responsible financial management of student meal accounts.

Wellness Policy

Children who are healthy, physically fit, and eat well-balanced meals are more likely to learn in the classroom. The district’s Wellness Policy supports increased emphasis on nutrition, as well as physical activity, at all grade levels to enhance the well-being of our district’s youth.

Some key components of our Wellness Policy are:
  • Providing students access to and encouraging consumption of nutrient-dense food
  • Discouraging the use of food as reward
  • Providing opportunities for physical activity and developmentally appropriate exercise
  • Providing and promoting accurate, evidence-based information related to health, nutrition, and physical education
For more information about the Wellness Policy, including guidance for snacks at school and other FAQ, please visit our Nutrition and Wellness page.

Allergy Accommodation Information

We are sensitive to the various nutritional needs of our students. If your student has an allergy to any food, please contact your school nurse as soon as possible. The top 8 allergens (soy, wheat, milk, peanut, treenut, egg, fish and shellfish) are flagged on breakfast and lunch menus.

While there are many more ingredients that can cause allergic reactions, the top 8 are the only allergens required on nutrition labels.

For more information about allergens, special diets, and our procedures, please visit our Allergies and Special Diets page.

The Food and Nutrition Services section of our website is robust and maintained regularly, and it contains a wealth of information that may answer other questions you have.

If you have any additional questions, contact Jessica Jandayan, RDN, CD, SNS, Director of Food and Nutrition Services, Shoreline Public Schools, nutrition.services@ssd412.org

Destinations: The return of CHOMP! - a major food festival in Redmond - Saturday, August 20, 2022

Sunday, August 14, 2022

Contrary to popular opinion, CHOMP! is not this summer’s latest sequel to Jaws, Jurassic Park or even Little Shop of Horrors.

It is, in fact, a free, family-friendly, day-long event which focuses on sustainability, healthy food and social justice.

Even with these strong underpinnings, CHOMP! is a fun new kind of county fair highlighting local food production, green living, and recycling mixed with live music, food trucks and kids’ activities.

Now in its eighth year, CHOMP! celebrates all that is fresh, delicious, local, and sustainable in King County.

Taking place at Redmond’s Marymoor Park, 6046 W. Lake Sammamish Pkwy Redmond, WA 98052, the event supports King County Executive Dow Constantine’s Local Food Initiative.

The event highlights chefs and restaurants using locally sourced food; local organizations specializing in healthy and affordable foods; local farms and farmland support.

Over the past seven years CHOMP! has grown to an audience of more than 6,000 attendees and features a full day of free activities for the whole family.

Kiddos in the audience will have their own musical groups, live animals, zucchini races, wilderness awareness school, sustainable toys and clothing, and a scavenger hunt.
Adults can enjoy CHOMP’s farmers market, upscale bazaar, tree climbing, booths for sustainability organizations, ethnic food vendors and live concerts.

King County Master Gardeners will host their traditional Ask-A-Master-Gardener Booth where they’ll also feature hands-on gardening experiences for kids.

Gardening enthusiasts and newspaper readers will have opportunities to speak with local gardening columnist, Bruce Bennett – The Garden Guy.

This year’s Festival will be held Saturday, August 20, 10:00am to 6:00pm, at Marymoor Park in Redmond

For more information about CHOMP!, visit the group’s website at www.chomplocal.org

Pandemic food benefits approved for some children this summer

Thursday, July 28, 2022

Thanks to federal COVID-19 relief funding from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, some families in Washington state will receive Pandemic EBT (P-EBT) benefits beginning late-July and through the end of the summer.

These benefits will help buy groceries while children are home during the summer months. P-EBT benefits can be used to shop at any grocery store, farmers market, or food retailer certified to accept SNAP/EBT.

Pandemic EBT (P-EBT) food benefits are available to families with young children who are eligible for Basic Food benefits as well as school-aged children who are eligible for free or reduced-price school meal programs. The Public Charge rule does not apply to P-EBT benefits and will not impact immigration status.

Families can Sign Up for Up-To-Date Information

Families can sign up for text message alerts about the status of their child’s P-EBT by going to textpebt.dshs.wa.gov

Families Can Still Access Summer Meals

P-EBT benefits do not replace any food assistance program already offered, including free summer meals. Families can continue participating in a summer meal program at their local schools and community locations, even if they receive P-EBT benefits.

P-EBT Plan Information

The Children Under 6 and Summer 2022 P-EBT programs will be available as follows:
  • P-EBT Children Under 6 program: Qualifying children under age 6 who live in a household that receives Basic Food benefits (the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program or Washington state’s Food Assistance Program) may receive $43 for each month they received Basic Food assistance from September 2021 – June 2022.
  • Summer 2022 P-EBT program: Qualifying children under age 6 as well as school-aged children will receive a one-time lump sum of $391 per child to cover the summer period through July and August 2022. School-aged children enrolled in Washington state schools that operate the NSLP who are eligible for free or reduced-price school meals are eligible for Summer 2022 P-EBT benefits. Children under 6 will receive benefits under this plan as long as they receive Basic Food assistance during July and August.
P-EBT Contact Center

For full details and additional questions about P-EBT benefits, families can visit dshs.wa.gov/PEBT or call the P-EBT Contact Center at 833-518-0282 between 8am and 5pm PT, Monday-Friday (except observed holidays).

Trader Joe's salad dressing with ready-to-eat chicken Caesar salad contains undisclosed eggs

Saturday, July 16, 2022

WASHINGTON, July 12, 2022 – The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) is issuing a public health alert due to concerns that the salad dressing component of ready-to-eat (RTE) Caesar salad with chicken may contain egg, a known allergen, which is not declared on the finished product label.

FSIS is issuing this public health alert to ensure that consumers with an allergy to eggs are aware that these products should not be consumed. A recall was not requested because the products are no longer available for purchase.

The product is no longer sold in the stores but the concern is that customers with egg allergies may have previously purchased the item.

The Caesar salads with chicken were produced on July 5, 2022. The following products are subject to the public health alert: 9 oz. plastic clamshell containers of “TRADER JOE’S CAESAR SALAD WITH WHITE CHICKEN MEAT and Creamy Caesar Dressing” with best by dates of 07/11/22 and 07/12/22, and a lot code of GHNW 186-06.

The products bear establishment number “P-46987” inside the USDA mark of inspection. These items were shipped to Trader Joe’s locations in Idaho, Oregon, and Washington.
