Attn Parents: new phone number for ordering school lunches

Tuesday, August 25, 2020

The Shoreline School District reports that due to a technical issue, they have had to update the phone number to place weekly student meal box orders.

The new phone number is 206-393-4103.

This has also been updated on the copy of the meal box ordering information.

(See previous article about ordering food)

Because the USDA did not extend funding that was providing food for all families with children, Shoreline Schools are only allowed to provide meals to students who are enrolled in the Shoreline School District.

REYKDAL: USDA meals waiver critical to provide nutrition to students across Washington

Saturday, August 22, 2020

State Schools Superintendent
Chris Reykdal

OLYMPIA—August 21, 2020—This morning, OSPI learned that the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) will not be extending the nationwide waiver that allows schools to serve free meals to students across Washington without income verification.

We are disappointed by this decision. Now more than ever, vulnerable families and students need healthy, nutritious meals.

We will continue to pursue an individual Washington state waiver, and I implore Congress to include authorization and funding for this essential program.

After $4 trillion in COVID-19 response, the last thing we should be debating is essential food for our fellow Americans impacted by this global pandemic.

Amid considerable changes to our system, school nutrition programs have adapted. During last spring’s emergency school closure, districts provided over 28 million nutritious meals to students, and used innovative new methods of providing them, including delivery and grab and go meals.

Adding additional barriers will create an exceptionally challenging environment for nutrition programs, and lead to a rise in hunger in Washington’s communities.

OSPI is committed to ensuring the nutritional needs of our students are met, and we will continue to seek an individual state waiver that will allow Washington to continue providing meals at no charge for any family in need during this unprecedented time.

In the meantime, we encourage families to check with their local school district regarding meal services and to complete and submit an application for free or reduced price meals to their local school.

School lunches in the time of COVID-19

Sample of pre-order meal form

Shoreline Schools sent this message to families with children enrolled in local schools

When the school year begins, we will no longer be able to serve free meals to all students as we were during the initial school closure in the spring. The USDA provision providing funding for that emergency program has expired.

We are required to resume following the National School Lunch Program guidelines, much in the same way as when kids are physically in school, which require us to charge students by price category (free/reduced/paid).
We will only be allowed to provide meals to students who are enrolled in the Shoreline School District.

During the remote learning period, we will offer meals through an electronic pre-order system

The pre-order system will be available beginning Monday, August 24 for the first pick up on Wednesday, September 2.

Orders will be placed for a five-day period to be picked up once a week. Following the week of August 24, orders will only be able to be placed each Wednesday for the following week’s pick up.
  • Each meal box will contain five breakfasts and five lunches.
  • Meal boxes must be pre-ordered weekly, on Wednesdays, for pick up the following week. Orders must be placed on Wednesdays between 12:01 am – 11:59 pm only to meet food production processes and timelines.
  • Pre-ordered boxes will be available for pick up once a week at the location selected in the order. There will be multiple time and location pick-up options to choose from.
  • Students must be enrolled in the Shoreline School District.
  • Enrolled students include grades K-12, Head Start, Early Childhood Education, and Special Education. This does not include children registered at the Shoreline Children’s Center unless they fall into one of the programs listed.
  • Meals will be charged to the student meal account based on their meal benefit status (free/reduced/paid). Click here for meal benefit applications.

If you plan to utilize the meal box service, please review the information on this page prior to placing an order. The meal order system will be active on August 24-26 for the first pick-up on September 2.

You can also learn how to submit a meal order in this screencast video.

For assistance in filling out the order form or if you do not have internet access, you can call our Meal Order Hotline at 206-393-4103. Calls will be responded to on Wednesdays between 7:30am - 3:30pm.

As with everything COVID-related, these plans are fluid and could change depending on demand. Please check this webpage regularly for the most up-to-date information.

Supporting local farms: Get fresh produce, berries, flowers, cheese and more using King County’s new Local Food Finder

Wednesday, July 15, 2020

The live, interactive map is HERE
You can enter your information or just click on the map

King County Executive Dow Constantine has launched Local Food Finder, an interactive map that identifies convenient ways customers can get fresh produce, berries, flowers, meat, honey, cheese, and more delivered from local farms to their doorstep, to a nearby pickup location, or picked up directly at the farm.

Farmers Markets, including Shoreline and Lake Forest Park, are included on the map.

The mobile-friendly map is one of several ways King County is supporting local farmers who have been severely impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic that has disrupted farmers markets and restaurant sales.

It is a product of the Local Food Initiative that Executive Constantine created in 2014 to strengthen King County’s local food economy and increase equitable access to healthy, affordable food.

“We are making it easier than ever to get fresh food and flowers delivered directly from local farms or arrange for convenient pickup right at the farm,” said Executive Constantine.
“Our new Local Food Finder is one of many ways we are supporting farmers who have been hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic. We will continue to mobilize resources and offer innovative solutions that connect farmers to more customers, strengthening our local food economy.”

St. Dunstan’s new mini farmers market for those in need

Sunday, June 21, 2020

By Josef Hinkofer

St. Dunstan’s Episcopal Church, "the church that feeds people," has for many years, provided our community a buffet style dinner, with emphasis on quality, presentation, and nutrition.

It has not been uncommon for us to serve up to 200 people gathered in our parish hall, enjoying each other’s camaraderie. Additionally, we delivered meals to homeless encampments like United We Stand, Tent City 3 and Tent City 5 each week.

As Covid-19 emerged, we transformed our buffet to a to-go only program, donning masks, and practicing frequent hand washing and social distancing.

For the past eight years Safeway, and more recently, Smart Food Service donations have made it possible to care for those less fortunate. This was our first week with our new Community Partner, Sprouts, which just opened at 13010 Aurora Ave. N. With the additional donations we were able to offer a mini farmers market, along with packaged food items and a hot meal.

We encourage the residents of southern Shoreline to visit us at St. Dunstan’s Church any Tuesday starting at 4:30pm. We are located at 722 N 145th ― “the church in the woods” next to the Interurban Trail. All products are gleaned or purchased from local retailers, offered free of charge, with no religious affiliation required.

We serve until 6pm or until we run out. Our aim is for everyone to receive a full hot meal and to take home a little extra for their kitchen. We encourage our guests to share with their own neighbors.

Enat Ethiopian grocery store in Shoreline – an overdue visit

Saturday, June 13, 2020

Photo from google maps

Phone: (206) 367-8387
Shoreline, WA 98155
Monday - Sunday: 10:00am – 9:00pm

Story and photos by Megan Kogut

For six months, I’ve been meaning to visit Enat Ethiopian, a newish grocery store on 15th Ave NE south of Hamlin Park. The Black Lives Matter march and strike on June 12 was my overdue notice. I visited the store and bought some groceries, and I of course had a good time, and here is my report. It is my hope that I inspire other locals who, like me, are too timid or stuck in a comfort zone that doesn’t normally include Ethiopian grocery stores, to try it too.

Enat Ethiopian is focused on providing a comprehensive selection of ingredients for making authentic Ethiopian dishes at home, including flours, spices, grains, and vegetables such as molokhia, which is like spinach but maybe even more nutritious.

The flour and grain aisle

The woman behind the counter was kind and friendly, with a gentle sense of humor. The place was clean, and everyone was wearing COVID-19 masks. I felt underdressed below the neck, however, since the other women in the store were wearing beautiful, colorful full length dresses.

If you weren’t already also focused on authentic Ethiopian dishes at home, you could find an Ethiopian recipe and take your grocery list to the store for a culinary adventure. Everything is clearly labeled, and the spice aisle is organized in alphabetical order. So even if you are unfamiliar with your ingredients, you’ll look like you know what you’re doing if you have your list.

The organized spice aisle

I just browsed for a few things to stretch my boundaries. Since I didn’t have a list, I forgot the besobela, which is similar to basil. But I bought a jar of niter kibbeh, a spiced clarified butter. I tasted the cinnamon in it right away, and the slight sharpness that followed was intriguing and pleasant. Niter kibbeh seems versatile and would work well with many recipes, as well as on toast with jam for breakfast.

I also found harissa in a squeeze bottle and locally made tahini in small and large jars, both of which I have been meaning to use more often in salads and sandwiches. I also bought some barley couscous, and a beautiful orange spice that I will put in the couscous, and do some research on while I eat it.

Their Ethiopian beer selection is very small and focused on lagers, but you won’t be able to find the three brands they carry in any other grocery store. I bought a six pack. They also carry an Ethiopian honey wine (made in California to style) and a large selection of soft drinks.

The store also sells injera, which is a huge, soft, sour, spongy flatbread used to pick up meat and stews like an edible tablecloth. Injera is made out of teff flour, so is practically gluten-free. They are sold in bags with enough bread to cover a typical dinner table.

My groceries at home

The injera are made at Enat Ethiopian Restaurant, owned by the same people and located about three miles south of the grocery store on 15th Ave NE and NE 117th Street. The restaurant is doing delivery and takeout, and getting five star reviews.
