They are held on the first Monday of every month, 5:30 to 7pm. This month June 4, 2018.

Monday night's menu is stuffed grape leaves, lamb and lentil meatballs with yogurt sauce (and a vegetarian version, of course), radishes with dukkah, green salad, and apple-walnut phyllo rolls.

Here's a recipe from Monday's feast.

Radishes with Dukkah (makes 4 servings)

Dukkah is an Egyptian condiment that lends itself to plenty of variety. You can use any kinds of nuts or seeds, and also a variety of spices. It's perfect on spring radishes, or cucumbers, or lentils, or just about anything

1/4 cup finely chopped nuts and/or seeds (Make sure to include some sesame seeds: they’re traditional.)
1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
1/4 teaspoon coriander
1/4 teaspoon dried thyme
1/4 teaspoon salt
Optional: small amounts of crushed red pepper, cayenne, or paprika.
1 bunch radishes, sliced

Combine the nuts or seeds with the spices and chop in a food processor to a coarse powder. Sprinkle on the sliced radishes.

AUSTRIA CLUB PRESENTS A NEW COOKBOOK

Like many nonprofit organizations, the Austria Club of Washington relies on cookbook sales to support its activities and boost its visibility in our community.

Its newest fund-raising cookbook, Austrian Cuisine: Treasured Recipes from the Austria Club of Washington, differs from others in that it focuses on Austrian regional cooking.

Edited by Shoreline resident Martin Král, it is a compilation of nearly 300 authentic family recipes that were thoroughly checked and properly translated.

The book's 10 chapters include recipes from Austria's neighbors and contributors representing the Club's membership.

Completely updated and systematically organized, recipes include standards such as strudels, dumplings, and desserts.

You may also find some gems with curious names like Screaming Cats, Drunk Monks, and Baked Mice (think beignets).

Sold for $19.99, the spiral-bound book is now available directly from the club and online. Later this month you can find it in stores at Leavenworth and at Amazon.

Contact Martin at 206-546-9692 or Email at buessi@msn.com for purchase and information

Two Shoreline churches collaborate to provide food for Ridgecrest students

Wednesday, October 11, 2017

Volunteers packaging weekly bags with donated cereal, soups, milk,
juice, mac 'n cheese boxes, granola bars, fruit packets, etc

City Calvary Chapel and the Shoreline Seventh-day Adventist Church are once again pairing up to supply weekend groceries for 30 selected Ridgecrest Elementary students.

Only prepackaged, individual serving sized items can be used. Food and funds are donated by these church families and by food drives that a Ridgecrest Elementary Girl Scout Troop conduct at Central Market.

Families could go hungry without this program and
the church volunteers who run it.

The food is stored at CCC and packed into bags for delivery to the school.

If you would like to volunteer or donate to this program, contact City Calvary Chapel at 206-709-9416, Heidi Skersies, or the Adventist Church at 206-363-2355 , Jennifer Murphy.

Filling bags with food for hungry Shoreline children

The church volunteers are part of the Food4KidsShoreline. These groups provide food packages to chronically hungry students from low income or homeless households who are at risk of hunger over the weekends when free school meals are unavailable. Every Friday students are discreetly given a bag of food containing easy to prepare foods which is then tucked into their backpacks and brought home.

Twin Ponds Community Garden Blesses St. Dunstan’s Church Community Dinner

Donation from the Twin Ponds garden

By The Rev. David Marshall, Rector of St. Dunstan’s Episcopal Church

On Monday morning I was working alone in the office at St. Dunstan’s Church when Shellie Anderson and her friend Alice, from the Twin Ponds Community Garden, pulled up in front of the church with a pickup truck full of beautiful produce.

Donation from Twin Ponds garden

Normally, they deliver fresh produce to a food bank but this week the food bank was closed, the produce was going to wilt, so they came to the church to see if we could use their harvest.

They brought lettuce, kale, sweet peppers, squash, plums, eggplants, beautiful tomatoes, tomatillos, fresh herbs, and fresh basil.

Tomatoes from the Twin Ponds garden

These beautiful vegetables all went into the meal we prepared at St. Dunstan’s church Tuesday afternoon.

Like most weeks, we fed almost 500 people: 120 at the church and more than three hundred meals delivered to 4 or 5 different homeless encampments.

Plums from the Twin Ponds garden

We at St. Dunstan’s Community Dinner program are grateful to the wonderful people at Twin Ponds Community Garden for their generosity.

On Tuesday afternoon, when I went into the kitchen, there were Shellie and Alice helping with the cooking. They even went along to deliver the meals to two of the camps.

Thank you again to Shellie, Alice, and all the organic gardeners at Twin Ponds Community Garden.

Recipe: Corn and Poblano Relish on the menu at Monday's Humble Feast

Monday, August 7, 2017

Devra Gartenstein, the Quirky Gourmet, is staging a Humble Feast dinner tonight, Monday, August 7, 2017, at her Patty Pan restaurant, 15550 27th Ave NE, Shoreline 98155, 5:30 - 7:30pm.

"Patty Pan's Humble Feast is a series of community-based dinner events featuring local ingredients sourced primarily from area farmers who are our friends and neighbors at the markets.
"But these dinners are also a practical attempt to answer the question: how can we eat well without busting our budgets?"

Advance tickets are $10 - $12 at the door.

Tonight's feast - a taco bar - and here's the relish that will be served.

Corn and Poblano Relish
Makes 3 cups

2 ears of corn
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 onion, sliced
2 poblano chiles, seeded and diced
1 teaspoon chili powder, mild or hot
½ teaspoon salt
Juice of one lime

Boil enough water to cover the corn in a medium-size saucepan and cook the corn for 4 minutes. Drain. When the corn is cool enough to handle, scrape the kernels from the cob.

21 Acres: Increasing access to local food in Briarcrest with Pop-up Farm Stand

Friday, August 4, 2017

Pop-up Farm Stand will be at
Shoreline United Methodist Church
August 2 through September 6 from 4-7pm.

21 Acres, a non-profit local food education center in Woodinville, is partnering with Shoreline United Methodist Church, to pilot a mobile farm stand to bring the community of Briarcrest fresh, local, organic produce.

The Pop-up Farm Stand piloting is between Wednesday, August 2 through September 6 from 4-7pm.
“We are passionate about local, chemical-free food and inspiring people to cook for their families, especially those who rely on limited resources”, says Meghan Tenhoff, 21 Acres Food Access Program Manager.
“Our goal is to increase access to fruit and veggies, provide simple, easy recipes, and most importantly, learn if the community wants to participate in creating a more vibrant local food system for everyone.”

To increase access to people who are living on limited resources, the Pop-Up Farm Stand will be providing produce to the community at wholesale cost. Shoppers can pay with cash, debit, credit, and EBT/SNAP. If a customer uses SNAP benefits, 21 Acres will double their money up to $10.

Small-scale farmers and farm workers work tremendously hard, putting their body and soul into growing food for us. Unfortunately, most cannot make ends meet and are on food or energy assistance. If we are going to transform our food system to one that is just, sustainable, and better for the climate, local farmers cannot be asked to reduce prices.

Shoreline United Methodist Church wants to further serve the greater community by providing space to 21 Acres, together we are hoping to build community around food and social equity.

To learn more about the pilot or if you have questions, comments or to get more involved email Meghan Tenhoff
