A Simple Gesture provides food for food banks

Monday, May 21, 2018

The Rotary Club of Lake Forest Park heard from Janiece Hoggatt at their May 16, 2018 meeting.

Janiece introduced the club to A Simple Gesture. This new organization supplies green bags to a community of volunteers. In their weekly jaunt to the grocery store, people can pick up a few extra non-perishable items until the bags are filled, then give them to the food bank for distribution to those in need.

A lot of hungry people can be helped by a simple gesture.

Stamp out hunger - Saturday - postal carrier Blue Bags

Thursday, May 10, 2018

WHAT’S WITH ALL THE BLUE BAGS???

That’s what everyone will be asking on Saturday, May 12, 2018

Here’s what you can tell them.

It’s our friends and neighbors helping to “Stamp Out Hunger”

The National Association of Letter Carriers annual food drive will collect nearly a half-million pounds of food for food banks in Western Washington.

Blue bags are being distributed this week, and postal customers are asked to fill this bag with non-perishable food items. Letter carriers will pick up these bags at mailboxes all day Saturday, May 12.

Food Lifeline (the food banks' Food Bank) is proud to be a partner in the “Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive”, providing the muscle, the storage, and our network of more than 300 food banks, shelters and meal programs to help distribute all of the donated food.

Woody's Food Frenzy - food drive and benefit concert for Hopelink

Monday, July 10, 2017

Woody's at 19508 Aurora Ave N is holding a Food Frenzy and Concert again this year, as a benefit for Shoreline's Hopelink.

From now until July 22 they welcome donations of cash and canned food.

On Saturday, July 22, they are holding a concert from 8pm to midnight. Concert starts around 8.30pm. Ages 21 and over.

The cover charge is $5 or 5 cans of food. Donations can also be dropped off beginning at Noon.

There will be drink specials. Ivar's clam chowder will be for sale with all proceeds benefiting Hopelink.

Note that parking is extremely limited so you are advised to Cab, Lyft or Uber to Woody's for the concert.

All money and donated food goes to Hopelink in Shoreline.

Last year we won a category for collecting the most food and $. We are hoping to top it this year.

Food Lifeline, the "Food Banks' food bank" is the sponsor of the overall food drive with many organizations participating. As the role of Food Lifeline is to take in food in large quantities and repackage it for distribution to food banks, they are happy to have individual events name their own benefit organization.

Woody's staff will be packing up donations and cash and delivering them to Shoreline Hopelink.

Twin Ponds Giving Garden

The 2016 Solid Ground “Growing and Giving” report names Shoreline’s Twin Ponds Giving Garden as the top contributor of produce to a local food bank of all Seattle area p-patches and community gardens, outpacing even Magnuson Park this year.

With the support of dozens of community volunteers who donated over 1100 hours, Giving Garden volunteer leaders Shellie Anderson, Susan Armstrong, Maggie Krostag and Callie Steward planted, watered, tended, and harvested 3,448 pounds of produce for Hopelink Shoreline in 2016.

Congratulations to these Twin Ponds Giving Garden volunteers for honoring Shoreline with this noble distinction and for working tirelessly to provide fresh produce for members of the Shoreline community affected by food insecurity.

Ridgecrest Neighborhood Association collects 800 pounds of food for Hopelink

Friday, January 13, 2017

The Ridgecrest Neighborhood Association would like to thank everyone who participated in our 2016 Holiday Food Drive for HopeLink during November and December.

Your efforts helped to make a difference for families in our community.

Our previous record for donations was 661 pounds, set back in 2011. This year we set a lofty goal of 700 pounds.

Through your generosity, we set a new record!

For 2016, we collected 811 pounds of food and $200 in cash donations.

This year’s collection site was the Ridgecrest Public House, 520 NE 165th. Located in the Ridgecrest Neighborhood, the Pub is open seven days a week from 4pm to midnight. It has become quite the community gathering spot for the neighborhood over the past year, so it was the logical choice for collecting donations.

Shoreline Hopelink
Reader Tina sent in this suggestion of a way to help the Hopelink food bank.

Safeway currently has 10 pound bags of potatoes for $2.99. Buy 1 get one free with club card. That's .15 per pound!
I bought 10 bags today to donate to our local food bank. No posted limit on amount. PLEASE DONATE.

Hopelink is located in Aurora Square: Shoreline Food Bank and Emergency Services, 15809 Westminster Way N Shoreline 98133, lower level near Marshalls. 206-440-7300.

Safeway shoppers can also purchase a pre-filled bag of groceries for $10 and donate it to a food bank right from the store. The pre-filled bags contain items such as soup, tuna and canned vegetables to help feed those in need this holiday season.

There are two local Safeway stores: one at 155th and Aurora and the other at 175th and 15th NE.

Join a community collaboration to end child hunger in Shoreline

Tuesday, December 1, 2015

Looking for a way to give back this holiday season?
Imagine a Community Where No Child Goes Hungry

More than 2,500 children qualify for the federal free or reduced-price meal program in the Shoreline School District.

During the school week, most of these children depend on the meals their school offers. Sometimes, the meals at school are the only ones they get. When the school closes its doors on Friday afternoon, many of these children go home to empty cupboards and empty bellies for 65 hours until they return to school on Monday morning.

Around the area, you’ll find many teachers who can tell you about a student who came to school on Monday, not reluctant to start the school week but eager to get back to school after going through Friday evening, all day Saturday, and all day Sunday without a square meal — or knowledge of a source for their next meal. Those children are the reason we started the Weekend Backpack Programs. Who will feed them this weekend?

The Weekend Backpack Programs ensure that children in need have balanced, nutritious food they need to learn and grow. The concept is simple: children at risk of weekend hunger receive a bag of food that is child-friendly, nutritious, nonperishable, and easy to prepare and eat.

Each Backpack offers enough food that children can easily assemble into six healthy meals over the weekend when schools are unable to provide breakfasts or lunches. By partnering with churches, community organizations, school staff, and our local school district, the Backpacks are distributed to children in need through the schools — discreetly — each Friday afternoon or before a long holiday weekend.

For students in need, the program:
  • Provides nutrition
  • Eases anxieties
  • Reduces absenteeism
  • Improves attention span
  • Raises academic performance
  • Increases self esteem
Weekend Backpacks

In 2009, the first grass roots effort began in Shoreline after Polly Terman watched a 60 Minute special on child poverty. Wanting to offer food, love and hope to hungry kids in Shoreline, she began Backpack Kids out of her faith community, Calvin Presbyterian.

Since that time, Polly has been instrumental in recruiting and encouraging other churches and organizations to begin to make a difference in our Shoreline community. Today, bags of food are assembled at more than 8 local churches and organizations and then distributed to more than 260 children at the end of the week. But for every child who benefits, there are many more still going without. With your help, we can provide more food to more children in need.

Food4Kids mobilizes communities, individuals and resources to provide food on the weekends for school children and youth in the Shoreline School District who might otherwise go hungry.

Because there is more need than we can currently meet, Food4Kids Shoreline was formed to help raise awareness and empower individuals and communities to take action. Each food pack costs between $9 per child per week, which adds up to $36 per month or $325 per year to support one child. Multiplied by 10, 20, or 50, these numbers can be significant -- and yet we have already seen what can happen when individuals come together and give sacrificially of their time and resources.

Every contribution, big or small, collectively adds up to something quite astonishing. Alone we can do so little, together we can do so much.

Our mission is that every school-aged child in the Shoreline School District has the nourishment needed to learn and grow. As a leader in the movement to end childhood hunger, Food4Kids strives to ensure children don't go hungry on the weekends by empowering individuals and communities to take action.

Rat City Fans donate to hungry, Rat City revisits Community-Care Program

Food Lifeline in Shoreline handles major donations of food
and distributes it to area food banks

The Rat City Rollergirls (RCRG) and their fans donated 2,604 pounds of canned food to needy families in King County as part of the tongue-in-cheek Show Us Your Cans campaign. In partnership with Food Lifeline and Hansen Bros. Moving, Rat City asked spectators to bring canned food donations to roller derby bouts during the summer of 2015 as part of a renewed focus on community care.

Rat City has historically been a grassroots roller derby organization. The league was founded by volunteers who are deeply committed to the community, but recent changes in leadership have reemphasized the existing community care program at RCRG. Thanks to Alexis Izor, AmeriCorps member and seasoned nonprofit employee, RCRG skaters recently voted on the following priority areas: the queer community, kids, sports, female empowerment and organizations that work with injuries that are common in roller derby.

“Show Us Your Cans, our food and fund drive to help our neighbors in need, aligns with our goals of being active citizens off the track too. We are a part of Seattle and love this city, so Rat City looks for ways to partner with organizations whose mission align with our values,” said Izor.

Food Lifeline, a nonprofit headquartered in Shoreline, provides food to food banks and views hunger as a distribution issue, as it seeks to find ways to reallocate food surpluses to those who need it. The organization supplies about 88,000 meals to low-income people each day. For RCRG, the partnership and success of the Show Us Your Cans campaign represents a marked shift toward increased philanthropic efforts throughout the league.

“We hope to build deeper relationships with local organizations that support causes we care about, and Show Us Your Cans allows us to work closely with Hansen Bros. Moving and Food Lifeline to make a difference,” said Izor.
About Rat City Rollergirls

RCRG is Seattle’s premiere all-female, flat-track roller derby league. RCRG is composed of about 80 active skaters and many more retired skaters who are still involved. The skaters are divided among four home teams, as well as the All Stars and Competitive Rat Lab teams. It is Rat City’s mission to maintain a competitive athletic program, promote the sport of roller derby, provide quality sports entertainment for fans, and make a positive impact in the community.

4-Corners Food Drive for Hopelink -- worth its weight in food

Food drive collects 1,299 pounds of food
A generous outpouring of food and money happened during the second annual 4-Corners Food Drive for Hopelink that occurred on October 3 at the Richmond Beach QFC.

This drive was the united effort of the 4-Corners neighborhoods: Hillwood, Innis Arden, Richmond Beach and Richmond Highlands, which have a great history of working together to do more than what one neighborhood could do alone.

It is hugely encouraging to see the efforts of these four neighborhoods combine to lighten the load and more than quadruple the fun.

In this six-hour food drive, you -- our neighbors -- contributed $390 and 1,299 pounds of food, completely filling every nook and cranny of a 4-door pickup with only the tiniest bit of room left for the driver!

This was 3.6 times the amount of food that we collected last year. Next year we'll need a bigger truck!

Thanks to all those who gave so generously of food, money and their time to make a difference.
