Food Lifeline en Route to Stamp Out Hunger Saturday

Thursday, May 7, 2015

Over 140 Food Lifeline volunteers, staff and partner agencies will join local letter carriers from post stations in the Seattle area Saturday, May 9, at 8am for Stamp Out Hunger, the largest single-day food drive in the country. This year’s goal is over 500,000 pounds of food.

Volunteers will accompany many local postmen and women on their walking routes to collect bright blue bags filled with food that Food Lifeline will distribute to local food banks, shelters and meal programs.

This year, Washington state’s governor, Jay Inslee, and the Washington state legislature have officially proclaimed May 9 as Stamp Out Hunger Day in Washington state.

“While one bag of food may seem like a small thing, it makes a huge difference in our local communities” said Linda Nageotte, president and CEO of Food Lifeline.
“In Western Washington, there is enough food to feed those who need it—we live in a region that is filled with a great bounty of resources. By working together through food drive programs like Stamp Out Hunger, we can ensure that no one goes hungry.”

In addition to food donations, Design Laboratory, Inc., a corporate partner of Food Lifeline, will match monetary donations for every dollar you donate on May 9. With that match, a $1 donation to Food Lifeline provides 10 meals to families and individuals struggling with hunger.

Make an online donation or get more information on Stamp Out Hunger here.

Help sort, box, and haul food for PTA holiday baskets

Tuesday, December 9, 2014

Holiday Cheer, We need you here
For a good reason, tis the Season.
Opportunities abound, we need you around.

Friday, December 12th 3:30-7:00pm
(and Saturday, too)
All ages, it is contagious

You will be cool, if you come to Kellogg Middle School
16045 25th Ave. NE., Shoreline WA

Unload in a good mood and sort the food!

Ok - you get the idea!

Every year the PTAs of the Shoreline School District do a massive food collection to make baskets for the families among them who do not have enough money to buy groceries to feed their families.

You are invited to be part of this wonderful event.

Friday afternoon - evening
The gym at Kellogg Middle School will be stacked to beams with staples when you are finished on Friday, December 12 from 3:30pm to 7pm. Sorting day is busy, and organized, and with enough volunteers, it's a lot of fun.

Saturday morning
Then another opportunity on Saturday, December 13, from 9:00-11:00am when all ages are welcome to help load boxes with food. It would be very helpful if you would bring your wagons and hand trucks. You will be going to food stations in the gym with your wagons and hand trucks to gather food to put into the family boxes.

Saturday afternoon
Confidentiality is our Specialty.
Saturday, December 13 11:30am -5:30pm. Because of confidentiality, this volunteer event is for adults only, with no volunteers who attend the Shoreline Schools or Running Start Program. There is need for volunteers with hand trucks and wagons who can help transport the food for families to their cars. In the late afternoon, volunteers are needed to help with clean up.

Compressor goes out at HopeLink - urgent and immediate need for dairy products

Saturday, September 20, 2014

On Thursday of this week (Sept. 18t) the compressor on Shoreline HopeLink's walk-in cooler went out.

They had it fixed Friday, but had to pitch all of the perishables in the cooler.

They would gladly accept dairy donations from the community if people were so inclined to donate.

They have two food bank distributions next week (Tuesday the 23rd and Wednesday the 24th) and will be without dairy - yogurt, cottage cheese, and sliced cheeses - for those people because of the loss.

Money is good, too. Donate at their website.

Shoreline HopeLink is located near Marshalls in Aurora Square (Sears) 15809 Westminster Way N, Shoreline 98133. 206-440-7300.

Scout organizes food drive for Hopelink this Friday and Saturday at Safeway

Tuesday, September 9, 2014

When you do your grocery shopping this Friday and Saturday, consider adding a few items for the Shoreline HopeLink food bank.

Shoreline resident Andrew Seger, working with Shoreline HopeLink, has organized a food drive for his Eagle Scout Service Project.

On Friday, September 12 from 6 to 8pm and on Saturday September 13 from 10am to 6pm, Andrew and his volunteer crew will be outside the North City Safeway at NE 175th and 15th NE, asking people to add a few items for the local food bank.

HopeLink reports a local shortage which is not expected to abate until the Holiday food drives begin.

The Shoreline HopeLink normally does not collect enough donations locally to support the need and usually relies on distributions from eastside HopeLink locations.

Andrew is hoping to do something about that.

Shoreline Bartell Drugs event Sunday with KOMO radio

Bartell Drugs' tradition of helping to fight hunger in the Puget Sound area continues with "Bartell's Community Food Drive," a community partnership with Shoreline-based Food Lifeline.

Bartell's Shoreline store will be the site of a major food donation event on Sunday, May 26, from 2 - 4pm. With on-site appearances by on-air personalities from KOMO Radio, the public is invited to bring their kids to donate a can of food to receive a balloon creation from a balloon artist. The Shoreline store is located at 18420 Aurora Ave N, in Gateway Plaza.

Beginning May 19 through June 1, "Bartell's Community Food Drive" focuses on replenishing local food banks in the summer months when families that normally depend on free or reduced-price school meals may struggle to provide healthy meals at home. Food donations can be made at all Bartells locations in King, Pierce and Snohomish counties.

Nonperishable food item suggestions include tuna, instant oatmeal, macaroni and cheese, peanut butter, jam, cheese crackers, applesauce and canned fruit.

Stamp Out Hunger - donate canned goods next Saturday

Monday, May 6, 2013

Stamp Out Hunger is the country's largest single-day food drive and takes place on Saturday May 11, 2013.

Food Lifeline, Western Washington largest hunger relief agency, partners with the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) to fill the shelves of local food banks, shelters and meal programs.

Known for its distinctive blue plastic bags, Stamp Out Hunger has provided over 4.9 million meals over the past 8 years to hungry neighbors across Western WA.

“On the second Saturday of May each year, thousands of letter carriers step forward and join our co-workers, family members, friends and community partners to pick up those all-important and often heavy sacks of donated non-perishable food items left by mailboxes,” NALC President Fredric Rolando says.

Created to help fill a gap in food donations between the holidays and the increased demand of summer, Stamp Out Hunger plays an important role in ensuring that hungry families and children can access the food they need.

How to participate:

It's simple, fill your blue plastic bag, with non-perishable food and place by your mailbox before 8am on Saturday May 11, 2013.

One of the reasons that local food banks value this food drive so highly is the huge variety of canned goods it brings into the donation system. So in addition to canned fruits and vegetables consider including your favorite canned good or other non-perishable item.

Shoreline’s Toni/Guy Hairdressing Academy advances in Week One of Hopelink Can Madness

Tuesday, March 12, 2013

Toni/Guy taff load food in the 2012 competition

Toni/Guy Hairdressing Academy of Shoreline defeated Hallmark Realty of Kirkland in Round I of Hopelink’s Can Madness competitive food drive and will take on Precision Electric Group of Redmond this week. Twelve businesses remain in the fourth annual drive to stock Hopelink’s food banks, but Toni/Guy is the only business in the Shoreline - Lake Forest Park area competing.

The competition is patterned after the famous national spring college basketball tournament, matching businesses in weekly competitions to see which one can bring in the most food. Each week, the winning business in every bracket will advance to the following week.

To ensure that businesses of all sizes are able to compete on a level playing field, the competition uses a unique scoring system: the total pounds of food donated by a business are divided by the total number of employees, resulting in a competitive “score.”

Teams are bracketed together in pairs and one winner from each 2-member bracket advances to the following week.
