In the Garden Now: Voodoo Lily

Voodoo Lily
Story and photo
by Victoria Gilleland

Voodoo Lily is one of the more unusual plants in our garden.

Ours are planted near the street so many passersby stop to ask about the unusual flowers.

The flower is made up of a spathe and a spadex and is similar in structure to a calla lily.

The spadex is over 20 inches long in this case. The flower could easily be mistaken for a big purple leaf.

The scent is anything but sweet. On a warm day the aroma is much like that of a rotting carcass.

Not wonderful perhaps from a human perspective but just right for attracting flies and other carrion type pollinators to this plant.

Flowers typically last for about a week so the scent is not a problem for long.

If you look closely at my photo you’ll see a fly perched on the right side of this flower. Looks to me like he’s getting ready to do his pollinator job!

Enjoy Mother Nature’s diverse offerings in the garden.

(Dracunculus vulgaris)

'Rosa Lyda' is a lovely single rose with two inch white blossoms edged in pinkish lavender. She is fragrant, disease resistant and flowers nicely in the shade!

'Lyda' has been growing happily at our place in a mid sized pot for the past several years. She's a winner in my book!

Color of poppies

These too are of a burning color, not orange, not gold.

But if pure gold were liquid and could raise a cream,

that golden cream might be like the color of poppies.

She said that "Usually I can only take pictures like the first one. But I found some flowers low enough to take close-up pictures."

According to Seattle.gov "This magnolia relative is a fast-growing deciduous tree that has distinctively shaped leaves and subtle but lovely, pale yellow flowers in late spring to early summer. It tends to grow tall and loves full sun. The foliage turns golden yellow in fall."

The blooms of the showy but invasive non-native yellow flag iris, Iris Pseudacorus, add color to the water's edge. It is considered a class C noxious weed in King County, although it is widespread.

Wisteria at Gateway Plaza in Shoreline

Saturday, May 29, 2021

Bearing clusters of fragrant flowers in spring, this glorious vine is very popular in the Seattle area, despite its reputation as an extremely vigorous grower.

Wisteria can grow out of control without careful maintenance; it requires sun and a strong supportive structure. The American and Kentucky varieties are most durable in frosty climates.

Warning: fertilizer not recommended ( if you want to save your other structures!!!)

This lovely arbor is in front of the U.S. Post Office retail store in Gateway Plaza at 185th and Aurora (Midvale) in Shoreline.
