Rollover accident on Saturday sends one to hospital

Tuesday, June 4, 2024

Shoreline Fire had a rough weekend June 1-2, 2024 with 89 calls between Saturday and Sunday.

On Saturday at 7:41am, they responded in force to a fatality structure fire on Burke Ave N. Readers report there were a dozen emergency vehicles and streets and cross streets were blocked during the response.

Shoreline alerted neighboring north King county departments of the need for backup, so when a call for a MVC Rescue (Motor Vehicle Collision) came across the radio, other crews responded to Westminster Way for a single vehicle roll-over with the occupant trapped.

Bothell Fire Department was first on scene as they were covering Shoreline Fire's stations. Bothell extricated the patient, who was then transported by medics to a local hospital.

The kayaker DID get out of Echo Lake alive

Rescue swimmers and divers gather to search Echo Lake for a missing kayaker.

By Diane Hettrick

There is a loose network of neighbors who live along the shores of Echo Lake. There is a core group called Friends of Echo Lake, who come together to clear invasive vegetation and plant native plants in Echo Lake Park.

Lakeside neighbors talk to each other but it can take a while for information to travel.

The west and south side of the lake are lined with multi-story buildings, so there are many eyes on the lake.

Now I have been told that one of those lakeside residents actually saw a soaking wet man, wearing a life vest, on shore the day the kayak was found floating in the center of the lake.

She noted it but didn't tell anyone until this weekend.

The bigger buildings have security cameras for the area around the building. The management of one of those buildings just reviewed their footage and discovered they had captured a shot of a very wet male in a life jacket.

So everyone can breathe a sigh of relief and quit waiting for a body to float to the surface of the lake.

Many questions remain. Can this person be identified from the security footage? Was the kayak stolen and that's why it was left floating in the middle of the lake? Or did the kayaker decide that he never wanted to see a kayak again and just crawled away?

The kayakers who live around the lake have never seen the kayak before, so he had to bring it in.

Our Fire Department spent hours searching the lake after getting a call for an upside down kayak floating in the center of Echo Lake on May 18, 2024.

The KCSO marine unit spent almost as many hours. It's good to know they are there for us and will continue to search diligently, even when they suspect there is nothing to be found.

Police and fire call off search of Echo Lake

Sunday, May 26, 2024

Rescue unit searching Echo Lake
After a small kayak was discovered floating upside down in the middle of Echo Lake on Saturday, May 18, 2024 and a caller to 911 reported seeing a man in the kayak two hours earlier, Shoreline Fire rescue swimmers and King County Sheriff's Office Marine Unit searched for five days without recovering a body.

Fire and KCSO Marine Unit do not have another lake search planned at this time.

As for potential outcomes of this incident, the Marine Unit is following their protocols for water recovery.

After conducting their initial searches, they would expect a drowning victim (if present) to surface within weeks in this body of water.

However, KCSO still has no known or suspected Missing Person reports that would match this particular scenario.
We therefore do not know for certain at this time if a drowning has occurred.
We would encourage lakeside residents and visitors to report any unusual objects observed in the lake.

No developments in search for presumably missing kayaker on Echo Lake

Monday, May 20, 2024

Shoreline Fire brought their Sea Do, a 1-2 person motorized watercraft (not pictured) The red & white board is a paddle board. Fire also brought a board (not pictured) meant to pull up a patient. Photo by Michael Wansley.

On Saturday morning, May 18, 2024, at 7:45am a lakeside resident noticed a capsized kayak floating near the center of Echo Lake in Shoreline and called 911.

The caller did not see anyone in the water at this time but did recall seeing a person in the same or similar kayak earlier in the morning.

King County Sheriff’s Office deputies (Shoreline PD) and Shoreline FD rescue swimmers responded. A search of the lake was conducted throughout the day by the Fire Department rescue swimmers, KCSO dive unit, with support from Bothell PD.

As of 6:00am Sunday morning, no body has been located or recovered. Deputies contacted many residents around the lake and have not yet identified any missing persons or the owner of the kayak. Regular kayakers did not recognize the boat or the description of the kayaker.

KCSO divers were out again on Sunday with no reported results.

This is an open investigation.

Worth noting is that the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary advises paddleboarders to put a waterproof ID sticker inside their boats. When small craft such as kayaks or canoes are found adrift, typically there is no way of determining whether or not individuals may be in distress. In such situations, having timely access to some basic information can make all the difference.

Protect children from falling from windows

Saturday, May 11, 2024

Window guards are inexpensive and easy to install

An important message for anyone with a child in your home: When our weather warms up, emergency departments get calls about children falling from windows.

It generally happens on hot days, when windows are open, and when there are distractions in the home. Visitors, family celebrations, perhaps an ill parent, or a new cleaner or babysitter.

Adults assume that the screens will prevent the child from falling; or they assume that someone else in the home is paying attention to the child.

Screens are built to keep bugs out, not children in. Screens cannot support the weight of a child pushing through.

Here's what you can do to keep kids safer:
  1. Install window stops or guards that prevent the window from opening more than 4 inches.
  2. Move furniture away from windows to discourage kids from climbing.
  3. Always actively supervise young children.
Window guards can be purchased at hardware stores and online.

King County and Shoreline Fire Department hosted a workshop this weekend to recruit women to join the EMS and firefighting work force. It was held at Station 51 in Kenmore.

Over 150 applicants applied for 38 spaces. This event always has a waitlist for participants and instructors.

Workshop leaders Jen Blackwood and Jenny Shin

A main reason this workshop (done twice a year) is so successful is because of Jenny Shin, King County EMS Program Manager, and Jen Blackwood’s commitment to expanding the interest for the communities we serve to be served by people like them!

The agenda for Saturday morning included a live fire demonstration, hands on for ladders, ropes, forcible entry and more!

The King County Fire Chiefs Association and King County Emergency Medical Services are committed to improving diversity in fire departments and EMS and are actively recruiting women to join the workforce.

The goal of this two-day workshop, which was designed by women for women, is to educate, clarify expectations, and provide support for women in the hiring process.

Workshop participants spend a weekend exploring the world of fire and EMS, learning CPR and firefighting tasks, watching demonstrations and participating in hands-on training. Participants hear from women from various agencies around the county during discussion panels.

Workshops are held biannually at designated locations throughout King County. Over 225 women from the region have participated in past workshops, some of whom are now working full-time in this career. Interest in the workshop was high with registration filling quickly.

Shoreline is hosting this spring workshop. Women firefighters and paramedics from across King County are working the event including Bothell FD, Eastside F&R, KC Dist. 20, KC Medic One, Kirkland FD, Port of Seattle, Puget Sound Regional Fire Authority, Redmond FD/ NEKC Medic One, Renton RFA, Seattle FD, Shoreline FD, South King F&R, and Valley Regional Fire Authority.
