House fire in Shoreline Saturday, December 9, 2023

House fire Saturday in Shoreline

Saturday December 9, 2023 at 1:37am, Shoreline fire crews were dispatched to reports of a residential structure fire at 600 block of N 178th St in Shoreline. Upon arrival, most of the second floor was fully involved. All residents and pets had safely evacuated.

Fire crews quickly knocked down a majority of the fire, while simultaneously, the ladder and aid crew went to the roof for vertical ventilation. Multiple crews cycled through the structure for overhaul.

Snohomish County and Seattle units arrived on the scene but were not utilized. The fire scene was then turned over to the Shoreline Fire investigator.

This fire was minutes away from becoming defensive, but the quick and aggressive work of the crews saved the home.

There were no working smoke alarms. No injuries to residents or firefighters. Cause is under investigation, but appears to have started in a bedroom. Possible electrical fire.

Fire safety tip: Keep family pets out of the kitchen

Friday, December 1, 2023

In the last couple of months the Enumclaw Fire Department has responded to multiple incidents that were caused by a family pet accidently turning on a burner on the stove.

Two of the incidents caused fires in the kitchen and one caused a natural gas leak.

Pets being the cause of kitchen fires is more common than you might think - try Googling "dog on stove."

Kitchen safety is not only for humans. Keep pets out of the kitchen while you're cooking and while you are not home.

Keep combustible materials off of stove tops at all times.

That applies to toddlers, as well, particularly if you have a stove with control knobs above the oven!

NEMCo and the City of Woodinville partner to deliver CERT training

Woodinville CERT class

By Kevin Lowery – NEMCo Emergency Manager

For the past seven weeks, a group of students have been spending their Thursday evenings taking the FEMA based CERT Basic course at Fire Station 31 in Woodinville.

While this group of students included residents from throughout the Northshore Region (including cities from Shoreline to Woodinville), it mostly consisted of Woodinville residents learning important disaster preparedness and response information from CERT instructors sponsored by the Northshore Emergency Management Coalition (NEMCo).

The course concluded this past Saturday when the class completed its functional exercise at Fire Station 51 in Kenmore.

This exercise utilized the Shoreline Fire Department’s training facility to test the new CERT members' ability to perform building searches, medical triage and basic first aid, use lifting and cribbing to removed injured/trapped persons, as well as the use of fire extinguishers to put out small fires that may be encountered after a disaster event.

The completion of this course not only marks the third successful course hosted by NEMCo this year, but it also demonstrates the ideals of neighbors helping neighbors and interagency cooperation.

It successfully brought neighbors from throughout the region together for a common emergency preparedness goal and utilized resources from the two major regional fire departments in the area, East Side Fire Department and Shoreline Fire Department.

Building this kind of interagency cooperation prior to a disaster is vital to having an efficient emergency management system when an event occurs. NEMCo and the City of Woodinville are very proud of these graduates and they the dedication to emergency preparedness their class represents.

For more specific information on NEMCo and disaster preparedness, visit our website at NorthshoreEMC.com

Live fire training at houses on NE 155th

Live fire training photo by Steven H. Robinson

Story and photos by Steven H. Robinson

The vacant properties south of NE 155th street in the 100 Block were provided to the Shoreline Fire Department to conduct various in service training opportunities related to training about structural strength and design of single family homes, the venting of heat from home fires, coordination of multiple fire agency responses and interagency communications systems.

Fire units from Bothell Fire Department, Shoreline Fire Department, and South County Fire District (provides fire and rescue services for the cities of Brier, Edmonds, Lynnwood, Mountlake Terrace and South Snohomish County) participated in the training.

This training provides an opportunity for firefighters from various agencies to practice together and develop their skills for use in real situations which they may respond to on a daily basis. This type of training allows for real life training in a safer environment.

This training will be taking place on four more days during the month of October and additional regional fire departments may participate in those training days.
