Small (and large!) gestures provide endless enjoyment - donations to Senior Center during the pandemic

Saturday, April 8, 2023

By Theresa LaCroix, Executive Director
Shoreline - Lake Forest Park Senior Center

It seems so long ago that we were completely shut in from our families, neighbors and friends due to the high level of risk associated with the COVID pandemic.

While the world hunkered down, Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Senior Activity Center was in full swing, providing what is termed Direct Emergency Services. This included services such daily meals home delivered, groceries donated to those housebound (lack of bus service), and a host of additional tasks as needed.

A serious concern that quickly became apparent to us was the negative effects of Social Isolation that we were all experiencing. For seniors who no longer have family members in the community, or they have passed away due to age, life became very mundane and lonely.

We are very appreciative to those who donated magazines and puzzles for us to share with those most isolated.

Ms GM Wiegand donated 1,000 disks of movies and TV shows to the Senior Center

One individual who truly made a difference was Shoreline resident Ms GM Wiegand, as she, along with her daughter, gathered her collection of DVD discs, catalogued each one and delivered them to the senior center.

In all, we received 476 DVDs, which provided a wide variety of interests from collections of Turner Classics and TV series such as Lucille Ball, to current day movies/TV series such as Sex in the City, and Planet Earth. Our library was filled with artists such as Sidney Poitier, Frank Sinatra, Robert DeNiro, Robert Redford, Gene Kelly, Bette Midler, Sissy Spacek and many more that we all know and love.

In addition there were boxed sets of television series, including the entire Star Trek universe, bringing the total donation to over a thousand disks.

Each week, we were able to choose 3-4 videos and deliver them to the homes of isolated seniors, providing them some lighthearted entertainment for the week.

The following week, we would exchange them for new videos, always sending a variety of interests. As we have moved past the pandemic, we continue to loan out the videos, providing affordable free entertainment for those on budgets.

We are most grateful for Ms. Wiegand's donation for the laughter, joy, tears, and pure enjoyment she brought into our homes.

It’s a Wonderful Life and Major Jimmy Stewart

Tuesday, December 27, 2022

By Doug Cerretti

One of the many things we do during the Holidays is watch Christmas movies. It’s a Wonderful Life starring Jimmy Stewart is on the top of my list.

It’s a Wonderful Life is an example of the darker post-WWII movies reflecting the experiences of WWII.

The movie was released in 1946 to mixed reviews and was unsuccessful at the box office, in part due to this dark nature with a theme of suicide during Christmas, “you're worth more dead then alive,” as Mr. Potter said.

Maj. Jimmy Stewart
Over the years, of course, it become a Christmas and cinema classic.

This was the first movie Major Jimmy Stewart made after returning home from WWII.

You may not have known that Stewart pulled strings to become a pilot in the Army Air Corps (he was too old) and additional strings to fly in combat (who wants to have a movie star KIA under your watch?).

Stewart was a B-24 Bomber pilor
Stewart was assigned to the 8th Air Force as a B-24 Bomber pilot, 703rd Squadron Commander and 445th Bomb Group operations officer.

He flew 20 missions over Europe and felt responsible for every airman that was lost under his command.

Like many veterans he carried this emotional load home and suffered post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) although it was not recognized then.

So when you watch It’s a Wonderful Life or any post-WWII jimmy Stewart movie think about this nuance.

Below is a link to an article by Dave Kindy published December 2020 about Jimmy Stewart’s war years.

Just another reason he is one of my favorite actors.

Best holiday movies to watch with kids this season

Saturday, December 24, 2022

Stock photo courtesy ParentMap.com
Reprinted from ParentMap.com

By Christopher Shiple

Right off the bat, I’m going to get myself on the naughty list by cheating a little. Our family’s all-time favorites, the ones we seem to watch every year, are “A Christmas Story” (1983), “Home Alone” (1990), and “Elf” (2003).

Chances are you’ve already watched these with your kids, but if you haven’t, you absolutely need to start with these three. But I don’t want to take up three recommendation slots with such obvious choices, so I’m cramming them all together — which technically makes this list have twelve suggestions ... for the 12 days of Christmas! Thematically appropriate! Ho ho ho!!

You might also notice some all-time classics missing from our list. “It’s a Wonderful Life” (1946) is a magical story your kids might appreciate when they’re older. But if your gang is anything like mine, anything in black-and-white makes their eyes roll back in their skull. So we’re only going as far back as the ’80s.

1. For some reason, we watched “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation” (1989) at an outdoor screening last summer. The film is way more family-friendly than the other National Lampoon vacation movies, and my kids laughed the whole way through the story of Chevy Chase stuck hosting his entire extended family for Christmas.

2. Okay, time for a little controversy. People have been arguing for years about whether or not “Die Hard” (1988) should be considered a Christmas movie. I say yes. It’s set at Christmas, and it features lots of Christmas music. But the important thing to keep in mind is if you’ve got older kids (the movie is rated R) who seem reluctant to want to sit down for movie time, they will probably make an exception for what is inarguably the greatest action movie of all time. Yippee ki-yay, Christmas lovers!

3. The Dickens classic “A Christmas Carol” gets retold in “The Muppet Christmas Carol” (1992). I’ve always had a soft spot for Kermit and the gang’s gentle but still laugh-out-loud comedy. With any luck, your kids will like it enough that, afterward, you can stream them old episodes of “The Muppet Show.”

4. I know not everyone thinks “The Nightmare Before Christmas” (1993) is an all-time classic. And frankly, it’s nowhere near my personal favorite. But there are only so many versions of “Santa’s in trouble” and “Let’s save Christmas” I can stand every year. And Henry Selick’s stop-motion dark fantasy that blends Christmas with Halloween is an imaginative change of pace that’s worth checking out.

5. “Get Santa” (2014) is another one of those familiar versions of kids saving Christmas, with the fun twist here that Santa is going to prison. With its British roots, it has a different vibe than most typical American holiday films. But there are farting reindeer, so your kids will love it.

6. “The Christmas Chronicles” (2018) follows familiar ground in a story about kids racing against the clock to save Christmas. But it’s well made, and Kurt Russell brings his trademark swagger to the role of Santa. There’s a sequel I haven’t seen yet, but I expect more of the same, especially from Netflix.

7. I’m recommending the animated version of Dr. Seuss’ “The Grinch” (2018) and not the Jim-Carrey-looks-creepy live-action one. We all know the story, but the movie manages to add a lot of topical humor for today’s audiences.

8. I can’t think of an actress who more embodies the holiday spirit than Anna Kendrick, who brings her unbridled joy to “Noelle” (2019), where she plays Santa’s daughter who gets wrapped up in some family drama. This one’s as charming as it is funny.

9. If you’re looking for something completely original, try “Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey” (2020). It’s a story about a toymaker trying to right a wrong. I just learned it was originally supposed to be a stage production, which makes sense — the music and dancing are fantastic. This film was nominated for nine NAACP Image Awards, too.

Tipping the Pain Scale explores systemic failures of dealing with addiction and innovative and controversial solutions

Tuesday, September 27, 2022

Washington Recovery Alliance hosts a Community Screening and Panel Discussion with Feature Subjects of the new Award-Winning Feature Documentary Film, Tipping the Pain Scale, at The Egyptian Theatre, 805 E Pine St, Seattle, WA 98122 on Sunday, October 9, 2022. Doors open 11am. Film at 12n followed by the panel discussion.

This community screening event will be hosted by the Washington Recovery Alliance (WRA) and will feature a panel discussion with subjects from the film, including Lauren Davis, Washington State Representative (D-32nd District), as well as Ricky Garcia (of Ricky’s Law), and community representatives.

Tipping The Pain Scale follows individuals grappling with the current systemic failures of how we have dealt with addiction in communities and their journey to develop and employ new, innovative, and often controversial solutions to the problem.

It is a quasi-anthology, weaving characters through their own stories as they connect to the issues plaguing all communities and the country in an urgent fight to save lives. It is a positive and uplifting, yet gritty and real, story of redemption and hope in cinema verité style.

“Solving the complex addiction crisis in communities requires diverse sectors of society to come together including public health and faith,” said Greg Williams.
“The film team is so excited to collaborate with the Washington Recovery Alliance on this event and conversation that won’t spend a lot of time talking about the problem, but where do go from here and what can we all do to play a role in turning the tide on this often-forgotten pandemic impacting more than 40 million Americans and their families directly.”

Rep. Lauren Davis, D-32 is
featured in the film
The film features Secretary of Labor Marty Walsh, NFL Pro Bowl Player Darren Waller, Spoken Word Artist and Educator Joseph Green, Washington State Representative Lauren Davis, Community Outreach Volunteer Roz Pichardo, Boston Police Officer Josh De La Rosa, and an original score from Grammy award-winner, Brendan Berry, as well as featuring music from Sia.

“When we provide people with rapid access to quality treatment within their window of willingness, recovery is not only possible but probable. Recovery is not the exception, it’s the rule,” said Rep. Lauren Davis (D-32nd District), and Strategy Director, WRA.

“This film demonstrates the power of story, outreach, compassion, and the true impacts of stigma. So, let's come together as a community to experience these outstanding stories that keep the recovery movement strong to ensure that recovery is a reality for all,” said Ely Hernandez, Executive Director of the WRA.

The screening will be held at Seattle’s historic Egyptian Theater in the Capitol Hill neighborhood, close to many restaurants, coffee shops, bus lines, and the light rail.

The event will include community resource tables, local dignitaries (Rep. Lauren Davis, Ricky Garcia and Ricky’s mother, from Ricky’s Law) who are featured in the film joining us for a Panel Discussion/Q/A directly following the screening, and the opportunity to connect with your recovery community.

Doors open: 11:00am
Film screens: 12:00pm
Panel Discussion directly following the film.

Masks must be worn while indoors except while in your seat. For more information see https://www.siff.net/covid and https://kingcounty.gov/depts/health/covid-19/current-guidance/verify.aspx
