Tuesday, April 27, 2021

For an outside Pacific Northwest event, the weather certainly showed up to prove a point. But rain or shine, the 5th Annual Shoreline Short Short Film Festival was committed to take place on April 24 at Shorewood High School in front of a sold out crowd of community members, filmmakers, and arts advocates.

The Shoreline Short Short Film Festival aims to support emerging and developing filmmakers in Washington State and encourage appreciation for the art of filmmaking in our community. Filmmakers and attendees did not disappoint! Thank you so much for spending your Saturday night with ShoreLake Arts at the drive-in.

The night also consisted of custom goodie boxes (made by Bittina from Selah Life Styling and Events), red carpet photos, McDonald’s fries, and an awards ceremony!

Speaking of which, congratulations to the Golden Sasquatch winners!

Lights, camera, King County – Harbor Island sound stage to jumpstart local film production

Monday, April 5, 2021

King County Executive Dow Constantine unveiled a new film production facility at the former Fisher Flour Mill on Harbor Island.

The 117,000 square-foot soundstage is King County’s first major public investment to bring back a once-thriving film industry and hundreds of family wage, creative economy jobs as the region rebounds post-pandemic.

“We transformed this vast warehouse into a creative space with stages, sets, and shops to put hundreds of people to work in good, union jobs making films right here in King County,” said Executive Constantine.

“This is about making a smart public investment to help this creative industry grow and thrive. We don't want Vancouver or Portland - or Atlanta - to keep serving as Seattle’s stand-in. We’re ready to spotlight the amazing talent of our region."

Third Place Commons is calling all book and movie lovers

Monday, March 29, 2021

Are you an avid reader or a movie superfan? Do you love delving into great stories, then discussing them with friends? Third Place Commons has the group for you!

Book lovers will discover kindred spirits and a warm welcome in the Commons Community Book Club, which meets on the third Wednesday of each month at 5pm. The group reads recent and critically acclaimed fiction bestsellers that have made it to paperback.

For April, the group is reading The Dutch House by Ann Patchett, a New York Times Book Review Notable Book, one of TIME Magazine's 100 Must-Read Books of 2019, and named one of the "Best Books of the Year" by NPR, the Washington Post, O Magazine, Buzzfeed, and more!

This Pulitzer Prize finalist is a richly moving story that explores the indelible bond between two siblings, the house of their childhood, and a past that will not let them go. The Dutch House is the story of a paradise lost, a tour de force that digs deeply into questions of inheritance, love and forgiveness, of how we want to see ourselves and of who we really are.

The group meets next on April 21st, so start reading and join the conversation!

Register here for the Commons Community Book Club. (Register just once to get the link to use for all future meetings.)

Meanwhile, movie lovers will find themselves right at home in the TPC Movie Club. The club meets monthly on the second Tuesday of the month at 7:30pm to discuss that month’s selection, plus other favorites old and new.

For the moment, the group focuses on critically acclaimed films from recent years that are widely available to stream so that everyone can easily watch them from home prior to the meeting. In the future, the club may switch to new releases in the theatres, but not until the current public health crisis passes.

At the next meeting on April 13th, the group will discuss 1917, which was nominated for 10 Oscars including Best Motion Picture and Best Director, and won three! It’s the story of two British soldiers during World War I who receive seemingly impossible orders. In a race against time, they must cross over into enemy territory to deliver a message that could potentially save 1,600 of their fellow comrades -- including the brother of one of the soldiers.

This gripping, nail-biter of a film is both powerful and visually dazzling and will keep you breathless till the end. So stream it now and join the club to discuss!

Register here for the TPC Movie Club. (Register just once to get the link to use for all future meetings.)

Currently, both groups meet via Zoom and are expected to continue online for the foreseeable future.

Third Place Commons, a community supported 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, has been building real community in the heart of Lake Forest Park for over 20 years. In addition to presenting its largest program, the Lake Forest Park Farmers Market, Third Place Commons now also fosters real community in digital space with TPC At Home programs. Travel back to Classic Hollywood in this Shoreline Community College online class

Thursday, January 14, 2021

Travel back to Classic Hollywood as you explore the films of Josef von Sternberg in Light and Shadow: The Films of Josef von Sternberg, an online class offered through Continuing Education at Shoreline Community College.

Revered and reviled in his own time, Sternberg is notable for a series of films in which he directed Marlene Dietrich and is renowned for his lighting, mise en scene, staging, and costume design.

Sternberg's surviving silent films are remarkable examples of the silent art form, and his gangster film during this period launched the gangster film cycle of the following decade.

Students will view six of Josef von Sternberg's films throughout the class and learn how to evaluate, analyze, and synthesize each film.

Additionally, students will discuss how the various elements of each film - lighting, camera work, composition, sound, costume, etc. - work together to create meaning and examine cultural influences, including race, ethnicity, and gender roles.

Fee: $149
Dates: 2/4/2021 - 3/11/2021 (Thursdays)
Time: 6-8 pm
Location: Online via Zoom

It was great while it lasted

Wednesday, November 18, 2020

The Crest opened up just in time to get shut down. They put new protocols in place to protect patrons from COVID-19 and reopened on Saturday, November 14, 2020.

Then cases of COVID-19 made huge spikes all across the U.S., including Washington and King county, and the Governor shut things down for four weeks, beginning Monday.

So the Crest got a couple of days.

Nice to see movies listed on the marquee if even only for a few days.

Don't miss this chance to find your next TV obsession. Tune in to Pandemic Picks: TV! on Wednesday, November 18 at 7pm. Register here for Pandemic Picks: TV!

If you prefer to unwind with a good book, it’s not too late to join the Commons Community Book Club, which also meets next on November 18, at 5pm (and on the third Wednesday of each month).

For November, the club will be discussing “Daisy Jones and the Six,” a New York Times bestseller that was named a “best book of the year” by NPR, The Washington Post, and many others. It’s the fast-paced oral history of a fictional 70s era rock band’s meteoric rise and tumultuous fall, and it’s a quick, fun read that you can knock out in no time!

Of course, if you’re more of a movie buff, you can also join the TPC Movie Club tonight (November 10) at 7:30pm to talk movies with new friends and discuss this month’s pick, the Oscar winning Best Picture of the Year “Parasite.” Register here for the TPC Movie Club.
