A sold out evening at Shorewood High School for the Pop-Up Drive-In

Tuesday, June 23, 2020

Story and photos from Shoreline LFP Arts Council, organizer of the event

The Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Arts Council’s new summer Pop-Up Drive-In Series kicked off night one at Shorewood High School in front of a sold out crowd this past Saturday night. Thank you to everyone who joined us for this first time adventure for the Arts Council!

For opening night we unlocked the Shoreline Short Short Film Festival vault and picked a variety of award winners and highly rated films from previous seasons to screen.

All of the films were made in Washington and many of the filmmakers were in attendance including Sam Kelly Jr., producer of The Claw from All is Well Studios.

“The Claw was always intended to play large and loud. With film festivals switching to being online, it was a tremendous feeling to see it screen on a big screen to a sold out crowd of cars.
"We heard laughs across the parking lot, and people honked during the opening of the event. This event is bringing joy at a time where filmmakers can rarely see things with an audience. We loved it!” - Sam Kelly Jr.
The audience was asked to vote for the People’s Choice Award and the winner was 2018 Best Picture and Surprised by Shoreline recipient Dinosaurs in the Hood by Long Tran and Nikkia Atkinson. Congrats! You can view the film online here. Warning: it contains language that some will find offensive.

Cars entered the parking lot between 8-9pm with their friends, family, dogs, blankets, lawn chairs, snacks, and masks. Everyone tuned their radios/speakers to a created FM station and maintained physical distancing from car to car throughout the evening.

The series will run through early August. To ensure our communities safety, we have designed the evenings to comply with current state health guidelines. Drive in through our contactless entry system - before you arrive, grab take-out from local restaurants (interactive map here), and settle in for a relaxing night watching film history masterpieces, or a mix of our most loved short films by our very own local talent.

Tickets now on sale for our July 11 screening of the ghoulish classic, Night of the Living Dead (1968). This film is unrated and contains scenes with violence, nudity, and strong language. Parental discretion is advised.

Mark your calendars for the other three Pop-Up Drive-In movie nights! July 11, Night of the Living Dead (1968), July 25, The Little Shop of Horrors (1960), and August 8, Washington made short films. All located at Shorewood High School.

Shoreline goes to the movies

Ken Winnick, consultant

By Cynthia Sheridan

It seems the three most important features needed for a community to develop its film industry are location, location and location. According to cultural entrepreneur Ken Winnick, Shoreline has many of these very desirable film settings.

Mr. Winnick is currently a consultant to the City of Shoreline, helping bring all aspects of the film industry to northern King County, a.k.a. “The Burbank of Seattle.”

As guest speaker at this week’s virtual Chamber of Commerce luncheon, he spoke glowingly of the great outdoor settings in our community and also the availability of significant structural settings: think Fircrest (medical), Community College (education), warehouses, parking lots and open fields.

Assisting in the presentation was Tony Doupé, Program Lead, Film and Theater Arts, Shoreline Community College and professional actor. Also contributing to the discussion was Dan Gildark, the producer on The Paper Tigers.

On the set of Paper Tigers

Recently, the old police station on 185th was used by a film crew for eight months, where they were able to do their post-filming production as well as the filming of the short film “Paper Tiger.”

The City of Shoreline has joined forces with the Shoreline Arts Council and Shoreline Community College to develop and enhance the film industry in our city including career opportunities for students, revenue for the city and continuing the promotion of the arts.

Production trucks at Fircrest 2018

In 2019 ten productions (short films, ads and other commercial products) were created in our neighborhoods. Each of these efforts has generated significant revenue for the city. Every production brings along 30 to 50 people who spend their paychecks and contribute to our community of the arts.

And now: it’s your turn to go to the movies with Shoreline’s Summer Drive-In Series

The Pop-Up Drive-In Series will begin Saturday, June 20th at Shorewood High School, bringing back a beloved tradition from our past.

Enjoy safe social distancing this summer with a mixture of film series, from local short film talent, to old classics. All in the safety of your car.

The first night will consist of screening Washington made short films between 3-10 minutes in length. Revisit these crowd favorites and award winners from previous Shoreline Short Short Film Festival seasons. $25 per car.

The Shoreline Film Office is an umbrella organization coordinating the filmmaking activities of the City of Shoreline, the Shoreline Community College, and the Shoreline Lake Forest Park Arts Council. These three groups work together to nurture and expand this exciting industry right here in Shoreline, and beyond.

46th Seattle International Film Festival (SIFF) cancelled

Monday, March 23, 2020

SIFF - the Seattle International Film Festival - has had a major presence in Shoreline, using Shoreline Community College's state of the art theatre as its north King county venue.

For five years, Shoreline has been home to screenings of SIFF films. In 2019 thirty films were screened over a ten day period.

The 46th Seattle International Film Festival, scheduled to run May 14 to June 7, 2020 has been cancelled.

SIFF is committed to being a part of the solution to help slow down the recent spike in numbers of COVID-19 cases in the state and across the country, and we remain committed to the safety of audiences, staff, and the community at large.

For our patrons who have already purchased passes or ticket packs to SIFF 2020, please consider making your purchase a donation to SIFF. If you'd like to consider other options, please submit your request via this form or email boxoffice@siff.net

We did not make this decision lightly. The Seattle International Film Festival is the largest film festival in North America, showcasing more than 400 films from more than 85 countries to 140,000+ attendees over 25 days.

While the core of the Festival takes place mid-May into early June, pre-events and activities begin up to six weeks earlier. The looming uncertainty of this crisis, and the huge amount of work that would have to be done now, makes it impossible to continue as scheduled.

When the COVID-19 restrictions are lifted, we won't be able to flip a switch and start back up with business as usual. We must pivot our current circumstances into an opportunity to innovate and reimagine a stronger, more sustainable and exciting future for SIFF and activate the philanthropic community to help us.

The day will come when we gather again to share great films, community, and experiences. Please consider supporting SIFF with a donation. Donate here.

Friday Afternoon at the Movies coming up: Friday, February 7

Monday, February 3, 2020

Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Senior Center and Scarecrow Video’s Silver Cinema Project partner to show some of the most beloved classics for all to enjoy again and again.

This month Modern Times (1936, 87 minutes)

Charlie Chaplin's timeless tramp character struggles to live in modern industrial society with the help of a young homeless woman.

In the Bridge Room at 1pm. There is a suggested donation of $2.

Modern Times is a 1936 American comedy film written and directed by Charlie Chaplin in which his iconic Little Tramp character struggles to survive in the modern, industrialized world.
The film is a comment on the desperate employment and financial conditions many people faced during the Great Depression — conditions created, in Chaplin's view, by the efficiencies of modern industrialization
The movie stars Chaplin, Paulette Goddard, Henry Bergman, Tiny Sandford and Chester Conklin. It is notable for being the last time that Chaplin portrayed the iconic Little Tramp character. --Wikipedia

The Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Senior Center is in the southernmost building of the Shoreline Center, 18560 1st Ave NE #1, 206-365-1536. Such a nice way to spend a Friday afternoon with your sweetie or friends! Come, enjoy!
