NUHSA event May 19 - documentary screening, discussion and tour Hopelink

Wednesday, May 15, 2019

Join NUHSA on Sunday, May 19, 2019 from 4 - 7pm at Hopelink (17837 Aurora Ave. N. Shoreline) for a special screening of Trickle Down Town, followed by a facilitated discussion and tour of Hopelink, a local emergency services provider and food bank.

Tomasz Biernacki’s new thought-provoking documentary about the homeless crisis in Seattle deftly interweaves in-depth stories of community members who are living the crisis on the streets with interviews of political leaders and community advocates, along with vivid images of the current state of affairs and a poignant examination of the roots of homelessness in the region.

Biernacki paints a picture of a region struggling to come to grips with an unprecedented emergency and finds a few glimmers of hope.

Biernacki says, “I have discovered that most people have... knee-jerk reactions and false beliefs... about the homeless.

They see the tents, the RVs, the addicted people who have untreated mental and physical health issues, and instead of doing something to help their neighbors, they degrade, cast away, and add insult to injury.

I want people to see that there are concrete, simple steps people can take every day to help the situation. It’s going to have to be a grassroots effort.”

The event is free and open to the public. Donations are gladly accepted.

Climate awareness films at Shoreline City Hall start Thursday

Wednesday, April 3, 2019

As part of April's Climate Awareness Week and Earth Day activities, the Bahá'ís of Shoreline are hosting climate awareness films again this year at Shoreline City Hall, 17500 Midvale Ave N. All events will take place in Room 303 from 7pm to 9pm on the following dates:

Thursday, April 4: “Racing Extinction” is a sobering look at humanity’s role in causing extinction of marine and other life, and the implications for its own extinction. Note: Due to some gory scenes, this film is not for the faint of heart. Parental caution advised. (90 minutes)

Tuesday, April 9: “Love Thy Nature” continues on the theme of extinction, but is a cinematic immersion into the beauty and intimacy of our relationship with the natural world that explores how nature nourishes us. The mind-set that humanity is somehow separate from nature has caused the disruption of billions of years of evolution, with mass extinction of species that threatens the survival of the human race. Love Thy Nature shows how a new era of connectedness with the natural world is key to ensuring our species' future. (76 minutes)

Thursday, April 18: “Tales of Arctic Travels” – In addition to the two films, Shoreline’s own “Climatey Jane”, Deborah Todd, will share stories and pictures of her travels through the Arctic last summer (2018), visiting Iceland, Greenland, and Nunavut in a failed attempt to transit the Northwest Passage. During that time, she was able to meet and talk with people living in villages in the Arctic, and hear their stories of how climate change has been impacting their lives in very real ways in just the past 10-15 years.

Award winning film RESILIENCE to show in Edmonds Tuesday

Saturday, March 2, 2019

On Tuesday March 12, 2019, 6 - 8pm, the public is invited to deepen understanding of the road to recovery for children who have faced major trauma and live with toxic stress.

This topic is the heart of a free program March 12 at Edmonds Public Library, 650 Main Street, in the Plaza Room.

The award-winning documentary “Resilience: the Biology of Stress and the Science of Hope,” by James Redford will take viewers deep into the national movement emerging this decade to deal better with adverse childhood experiences in health, education and community settings. Pediatricians, therapists and educators, using cutting edge brain science to disrupt cycles of violence, addiction, and disease, share ways forward.

Two speakers will supplement the film with local realities, lead discussion and answer questions: Liza Patchen-Short, the Children’s Mental Health Liaison for Snohomish County Human Services Department, and Sadie McHatton, a public health nurse with Snohomish Health department.

The movie includes a doctor who worked with children and families after the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut and the work of a former Walla Walla high school principal whose school in 2014 became known across the nation as a “trauma informed” school and who helped initiate the movement to help children become resilient again post-trauma.

This program is sponsored by the Children and Youth Committee of the Snohomish County League of Women Voters, in partnership with Sno-Isle Library, Verdant Health, and the AAUW.

Thursday, January 31, 2019

The Everett Film Festival is proud to announce an exceptional lineup for its 2019 event, which will take place Friday, Feb. 15 and Saturday, Feb. 16 at the Everett Performing Arts Center, 2710 Wetmore Ave.

Highlights include speeches by two filmmakers/ representatives, an appearance by a guide-dog trainer with a puppy, and the screening of an Academy Award-winning short on an undocumented 15-year-old girl with a hard life and amazing artistic talent.

Featured films with presenters are as follows:

Friday:

  • Pick of the Litter. Rebecca Minelga from Puppy Guides of Snohomish County will bring a puppy in training and discuss her experiences while training one of the dogs featured in this heartwarming documentary.

Saturday:

  • Return of the River by Jessica Plumb. A fascinating documentary about the largest dam removal project in U.S. history and the effort involved in making it happen. Jessica is sending a video to update the audience on the Elwha River since the dam removal.
  • Intersection by Nicole McMurray, local filmmaker. A narrative short about a conflicted young woman as she waits to cross the street. Nicole will be on hand with her film crew. Filming took place at Everett intersections.
  • Take My Nose…Please by Joan Kron. A first film, made when the filmmaker was 89 years old, about cosmetic surgery. Often humorous and at times poignant, it includes interviews and commentary by several well-known female comedians as they contemplate “getting work done.” Joan is flying in from New York to speak to our audience about her film and may discuss her next project.

The festivities will kick off with an opening-night reception catered by Lombardi’s from 6-7pm Friday, followed by the screening of two captivating short films, plus Pick of the Litter. Doors open at 5:30pm, and the screenings end at 9pm.

Saturday will be a full day, with doors opening at 12:30pm and seven screenings beginning at 1pm. At 4:30pm, the intermission will feature Sips and Snacks — a complementary selection of tasty treats from Everett eateries.

Doors Open at 6pm | Movies Begin at 7pm

Lights, Camera, Action! The Shoreline Short Short Film Festival is coming back for its third year! Filmmakers from all over Washington have submitted their “short short” films and you’re invited to see the selected films on Saturday, February 9 at 7pm in the state-of-the-art Shoreline Community College Theater.
