Strawberry Festival

The Richmond Beach Community Association will be hosting its 12th annual Strawberry Festival at the Richmond Beach Community Park next to the library on Saturday, May 14, from noon to 5:00 p.m. This event is co-sponsored by the city of Shoreline and the music is supported by a Community Arts Project grant from the Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Arts Council. Here’s what you have to look forward to:

Entertainment
It will be one peppy act after another on the Shoreline-LFP Arts Council Showmobile at the Strawberry Festival, May 14. Five great local bands will play, from noon to 5 p.m., at the west end of the Community Park.

Noon: Quarter Past 8, featuring Richmond Beach native Cat Henderson, will kick things off with some good time classic rock. They are as sunny as the weather will be!

1 p.m.: The Portage Bay Big Band, directed by Richmond Beach’s Todd Nordling, was so popular last year that they just had to come back for more!

The Jangles - western swing band
2 p.m.: The Jangles are old neighbors but new to the Strawberry Festival, as is their style – Western Swing, which is about as much fun as is legally permissible!

3 p.m.: Shoreline Community College has a popular and growing Bluegrass Music program, and teachers Cliff Perry and Tom Moran will direct their hottest pickers to Richmond Beach!

4 p.m.: Shorewood High School’s award-winning Jazz Band will hit the stage for all of the community, not just their parents. Prepare to be impressed!

Back to steal the show will be the cute and bubbly young ladies of the Horizon School Junior Pom Team at 2:45 p.m. This talented group is always a crowd pleaser.

A Taste of Edmonds this Friday, Saturday, Sunday, August 13-15

Wednesday, August 11, 2010

Taste of Edmonds Arts & Crafts booths 2009

A Taste of Edmonds, now in its 28th year, is a three-day celebration of culinary creativity presented by the Edmonds Chamber of Commerce. From August 13 to August 15, this popular annual festival will bring dozens of food vendors, live music and entertainment, arts and crafts booths, beer and wine gardens, kids’ activities, and much more to Snohomish County.

Some 40 food vendors from across the United States — as well as just up the road in Edmonds — will be serving unique cuisine all weekend. Sample and savor a wide range of food, from gourmet delights (blackened salmon, duck confit sliders and authentic “shrimp on the barbie”) to exotic edibles (Filipino pork, samosas and alligator on a stick) to familiar “fair fare” (burgers, ice cream, kettle corn and deep-fried candy bars).

The Frontier Communications Mainstage will feature headliners ASIA Featuring John Payne, making their Edmonds debut on Friday, August 13, at 6:30 pm. Joining ASIA Featuring John Payne on the Mainstage will be perennial festival favorites Cherry Cherry, Dysfunksion, Stan Boreson, The Islanders and more. The Beer Garden Stage sponsored by Budweiser will feature such performers as The Afrodisiacs, Duffy Bishop, The Spazmatics, The Beatniks, AC/DC tribute band Problem Child, Magic Bus, Liquid Blue, and 97.3 KIRO-FM traffic reporter Shane Cobane’s unforgettable Elvis tribute.

For the youngsters, the Kids’ Stage will feature entertainers such as JP Patches, Buck and Elizabeth, the Reptile Man and Tim Noah. There will also be inflatables, pony rides, a rock wall to climb, model hydroplane racing, free craft activities and booths.

Verizon Wireless’ NASCAR Pit will give attendees the chance to get close to a full-sized replica of the official Verizon Wireless NASCAR vehicle — and even change its tires and check under the hood. Dozens of arts and crafts booths will offer original, hand-crafted work, including jewelry, art, photography, clothing, pottery and glassware.

The 28th annual A Taste of Edmonds will be held from 11 am to 10 pm on August 13 and 14, and 11 am to 7 pm on August 15. Activities will take place at Civic Playfield, located at 310 6th Ave N in Edmonds.

Admission is $3 for teens and adults, free for kids 12 and under. Pets are not permitted at the festival. Free parking and a free shuttle service will be offered from Edmonds-Woodway High School, located at 212th St SW and 76th Ave W. Shuttles run every 15 minutes each day, starting at 11 am and ending one-half hour after the festival closes. For more information, call 425-670-1496 or visit the website.

Strawberry Festival a blossoming event

Sunday, May 16, 2010

By Sheri Ashleman

It was a beautiful day in the Richmond Beach neighborhood for the 11th annual Strawberry Festival on Saturday, May 8, at the Richmond Beach Community Park. Hundreds of residents and visitors attended the community gathering to partake in the music, food and numerous activities under warm, sunny skies.

This event is a showcase of many of the wonderful assets that can be found in Richmond Beach. The park itself boasts some of the best views of Puget Sound in the City - a fantastic backdrop for the performances on the Showmobile stage.

All the bands have some connection to Richmond Beach or the greater Shoreline Area. This year’s outstanding line up included Fidgety Feet Jazz Band, Portage Bay Big Band, Warren Murray Delta Blues Duo, Northern Departure and Jimmy Free’s Friends.

An appearance by the talented young ladies who comprise Horizon School’s Junior Pom Team gave the event a real home town flavor.

A wide variety of culinary delights was provided by local restaurants Richmond Beach Grill House, Full Moon Thai Cuisine, Naknek Seafood and Flying Dragon Chinese Cuisine.

Richmond Beach Community Association served up its signature fresh Strawberry Shortcake.

Vicki Stiles from the Shoreline Historical Museum led a walking tour of historic Richmond Beach.

Activities for the kids included face painting, art projects, a chalk mural on the park wall, a photo booth, whiffle ball, volleyball, a bouncer and an obstacle course.

Shoreline Police Department hosted representatives from the KCSO Marine Unit who brought their swift water boat to demo and talked about boating education and water safety. Shoreline Fire Department provided an Emergency Medical Services (EMS) display that included a resuscitation demonstration, Teddy Bear Clinic, toy fire engines, firefighter dress up, and a tour through a medic unit.

Shorewood High School seniors in Sally Tonkin’s digital photography class submitted their favorite photos to display at the festival. Paulette Kang’s photo received the most votes and won the Shorewood Photography Contest for which Paulette was awarded a $200 scholarship.

To view more photos from this event, visit Richmond Beach Community Association’s website.
The Strawberry Festival is co-sponsored by Richmond Beach Community Association and the City of Shoreline. The music is supported by a Community Arts Project grant from the Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Arts Council. Other donors include AA Party Rentals, Lee’s Martial Arts Academy, Realtor Jack Malek, Qwest Pioneers and Vivian Bennett DDS.
