Underground Holiday Market is bigger than ever

Monday, November 20, 2023

A group congregates on the corner outside City Hall

The Underground Holiday Market used to be confined to the lower parking area in the Shoreline City Garage - hence 'underground'.

It made an appropriate venue during the pandemic, as people and vendors were in the open air.

But now it has expanded and appears to have ambitions to take over the entire corner!

On Saturday November 18, 2023 crowds of holiday shoppers bundled in warm coats happily perused the vendors at the market - and there was a lot to see.

All photos by Steven H. Robinson

Ok, I exaggerate. But it has expanded beyond the underground garage to place a few vendors with canopies in the courtyard between the garage and City Hall.

Tables with activities for children filled the lobby.

It was clearly a popular event.

Like last year, the holiday crafts fair will be located inside the lower lobby of Town Center at Lake Forest Park, just downstairs from Third Place Commons. Meanwhile, regular market food vendors will be located outside in the usual spot along with some more great crafts vendors.

Yes, you can still use your SNAP and SNAP Market Match at the fall holiday markets! If you have leftover currency, take it straight to the vendors to shop. If you still have Market Bucks from one of Third Place Commons’ distribution partners (Ballinger Homes, the SL-LFP Senior Center, or Hopelink), you can still use them. Disregard the expiration date and bring them along. The market will be happy to honor them through the end of 2023.

Estelle goes to the Market (Shoreline Farmers Market)

Thursday, July 13, 2023

Intern Estelle Lee and a friend went to the Shoreline Farmers Market to check it out from a youth perspective. It should be noted that the musicians are different every week and the vendors and food trucks also change from week to week. The market is held every Saturday from 10am to 2pm at the Shoreline Park 'n Ride at 192nd and Aurora --Editor

Shoreline Farmers Market’s entrance on a bright Saturday afternoon

Shoreline Farmers Market: More Than a Farmers Market

Story and photos by Estelle Lee

Live music, art displays, and food with fresh ingredients from all around the world — am I at Bumbershoot? Nope, this is Shoreline Farmers Market.

Though I’ve lived in Shoreline for many years, I had never visited the 10-year-old seasonal farmers market. My parents do the grocery shopping, so I never went out to buy produce for the family either.

Magaña Farms’ shaded, red booth

But this farmers market may have changed my habits. As my friend and I glanced around the stands for Hayton and Magaña Farms, I couldn’t help but call my family. Were we in need of juicy red cherries? Or ripe golden onions?

Olsen Farms offers tubs of bacon, sausage, pork chops, and more

Coleville’s Olsen Farms displayed a delicious double-booth set-up with every kind of beef, lamb, and pork.

Another booth, Little Lolos Farms, even brought specialty herbs and microgreens from their innovative vertical farm in Belltown.

Shoreline Farmers Market is also “more than a farmers market.” Besides the tasty fruits and vegetables dispersed, it offers other dishes for brunch or dessert like Bosnian pastries, Indonesian eatery, and multiple Mediterranean options with pita and hummus.

A food truck, Kathmandu MoMoCha, pulled into a spot by the entrance, offering Nepalese street food and Himalayan dumplings.

“Your dog called… said to bring PupCakes!”

Even dogs can enjoy a gourmet snack at the PupCakes stand, ready for hungry pups with a tub of water besides their fresh-baked mixes.

Trying out Papa Tony’s Hot Sauce

At Papa Tony’s Hot Sauce, my friend and I tested five different gourmet sauces with local ingredients. Luckily, we had a bottle of water for between rounds. When water no longer sufficed, we turned around to see Smith Brothers milk and Seattle Pops in the booths conveniently across. For $5.50 each, I got a mint chocolate chip pop (my go-to), and my friend got chocolate banana.

Fan-favorite Seattle Pops sells pops of eight different flavors

Shoreline Farmers Market brings not only good eats, but good information. With stands like Save Shoreline Trees, I learned about tree canopies in Shoreline that are currently at risk with our city’s zoning plans.

Alluria displays colorful candles with colorful flags supporting LGBTQ visitors

At the woman and LGBTQ-owned candle company, Alluria, I sniffed beach and Prince-inspired candles while learning about the Lambert House, a center for LGBTQ youth in Seattle.

Manuel Castro Glass displayed gorgeous glasswork — in the shape of leaves, cups, and even spears. Nearby, M Jewelry sold colorful dangly earrings and necklaces in the shade. As I was about to leave, I saw kids lined up at a face painting table.

Jitensha takes a break to speak with passersby

Along with visual arts, my whole experience at the market was backed by garage pop duo Jitensha singing “Home” by Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros. It made me truly love my home of Shoreline.

Estelle goes to the market (LFP Farmers Market)

Thursday, July 6, 2023

SAN Intern Estelle Lee reports on her visit to the Lake Forest Park Farmers Market, held on the lower level parking lot at LFP Town Center, intersection Bothell and Ballinger Way NE.

As I pulled into the Third Place Commons’ busy lot, I could already see the bustle of the Lake Forest Park Farmers Market in the distance.

LFP Farmers Market on a lovely Sunday afternoon in June

The lively scene with family, friends, and furry friends will take place every Sunday from 10am to 2pm until October 15, 2023.

This Sunday was my first time visiting the market that is bringing together over 40 vendors this season. In the city’s latest 70-degree weather, I smiled at the first booth. Seattle Pops, a particularly popular stand with a curving line, proudly displayed its delicious flavors and the local origins of their ingredients.

Wilson Fish Markets and its quirky signs

After buying a $5.50 pop (mint chocolate chip), I swiveled around and saw Wilson Fish Markets. With “local troll caught fish,” the stand’s king salmon, cod, and sea scallops were surrounded by snappy quotes and jokes. One reminds Lake Forest Park residents: “We don’t stop fishing because we get old. We get old because we stop fishing.”

$20 flower bundles and bouquets scattered the market, with fresh pink peonies that caught my friend’s eye.

And of course, besides bunches of flowers, LFP Farmers Market brought some of the state’s best farms — Well Fed Farms, Alvarez Organic Farms, EF Produce, and more — presenting onions with stalks and Bugs-Bunny carrots with fronds. Fir Island’s Hayton Farms had already sold out their Himbo-Top raspberries and tayberries. A purple booth sold locally made elderberry soup in purple cans, with samples of elderberry wellness syrup available for passersby.

Well Fed Farms brings berries, beets, carrots, and cabbage

Golden Girls Honey and Hives from North Creek stunned with its smooth, shining jars of honey.

The green Happy Cat Farms stand boasted its “vegetables made easy” with its cat-packaged microgreens.

Along with people, LFP Farmers Market was heaven for its dog walkers, with Pupeli’s natural dog snacks and plush puppies at the North Sound Police Foundation stand.

A small pup roams Third Place Commons grounds

Refreshers were strewn about, some for me and some for those over 21. Lopez Island Vineyards presented bottles of water-colored wine with gold caps, and Tin Dog Brewing stacked cans of their signature beer.

Alpenglow Cocktail Company offered handcrafted cocktail mixers from the great pacific northwest and fresh squeezed lemonade for visitors of all ages. Honest Mocha brings coffee from farmers in Yemen, boosting socio-economic reform in the country and happiness in LFP.

Honest Mocha’s stand with Yemen specialty coffee and informational papers

La Pasta and Ola Mae’s Southern BBQ provided the perfect lunchtime meals for my friend and I, who grubbed on ravioli and a pulled pork sandwich. After, booths of salami, salsa, pastries, and marshmallow crispy treats tempted us with a snack.

The Bob Pearson Images stand showed beautiful photography, and SK Designs displayed stunning handcrafted jewelry, in the shape of rings, earrings, anklets, and more.

A sign near the necklaces read: “Unattended children will be given a cup of espresso and a free puppy.”

Bob Pearson Images captures bees, valleys, and clouds

After unsuccessfully wandering SK Designs’ booth as an “unattended child,” I figured I’d explored the best of LFP Farmers Market. With a pop, some ravioli, and tester salsa and salami sitting in my stomach, I skipped back to my car, impatient for the next Sunday.
