Lake Forest Park Farmers Market Sunday

Sunday, June 28, 2020

The Lake Forest Park Farmers Market runs through October 18, 2020 on Sundays, 10am to (NEW TIME) 2pm.

The Market is located in front of the Professional Building at the intersection of Bothell Way and Ballinger Way in Lake Forest Park. Plenty of free parking.

It is a fresh market with locally, organically grown food, flowers, and plants.

Because of COVID-19 the booths are spaced farther apart, there are not as many (but at least one of everything) and they monitor how many people are in the market at one time.

But it's still the best place to get freshly picked, organically grown produce.

Social distancing at the Shoreline Farmers' Market Saturday

Monday, June 8, 2020

Booths were spaced apart

Photos by Steven H. Robinson

With excellent planning and guidelines from the state, the Shoreline Farmers Market first market of the year on Saturday was successful for shoppers and vendors.

Entrance line

Shoppers waited briefly to enter the market as organizers controlled the number of people on site to avoid crowding. All the vendors wore masks. Shoppers were encouraged to bring their reusable bags.

Yakima Valley Fruit

The vendors had small lines to control the number of people at each booth. The booths themselves were fewer in number and placed six feet apart.

Organic produce from Alvarez Family Farms

Even so, everything was there - fruits, vegetables, baked goods, honey, flowers...

Resist the urge to touch the produce

Signs asked shoppers to "resist the urge to touch the produce."

Tall Grass baked good

It was also their first time in a new location by the Bank of America on the upper level of Shoreline Place on Westminster Way. The new site is literally in view of the old site across the parking lot.

They'll be back in place next Saturday, from 10am to 3pm.

LFP Farmers Market news - cherries, berries, increased SNAP Market Match and more

Collins Family cherries at the
LFP Farmers Market Sunday

The Lake Forest Park Farmers Market is swinging into gear in June with new hours and an increase in SNAP Market Match just as delicious seasonal fruit begins to arrive.

This Sunday, 10am – 2pm, head to the market to get your first cherries of the season. Collins Family Orchard will be there with Early Robins and Chelan cherries, plus pink lady apples!

If you’re in a very berry mood, stop by Sidhu Farms, Hayton Farms, and Garden Treasures for some tasty strawberries.

Then drop in to Doll House Bakery where they’ll have fresh shortcake just perfect for your strawberry shortcake delight.

Other vendor highlights include Alvarez Organics, who will bring fresh organic peas, and Wilson Fish who say the salmon looks amazing this week – perfect for baking or BBQ.

Don’t forget that many of the market vendors are now accepting pre-orders to speed up your visit to the market. Check out the vendor list on the Third Place Commons website for more information.

In addition to the cherries and berries, SNAP recipients have another reason to rejoice. Starting this Sunday, June 7th, SNAP Market Match will increase from $10 to up to $25 per customer per day through the month of June.

That means that if you bring your EBT card to the Lake Forest Park Farmers Market now through June 30th, you will receive a dollar-for-dollar match up to $25 in SNAP Market Match currency to use on fresh fruits and vegetables, including all those cherries and strawberries. If you shop the market every week in June, that’s $100 of free produce!

In addition, the farmers market is looking for a Market Set-up Assistant to help set-up and tear-down the market each week.

The position needs someone strong and dependable, with reliable access to a vehicle large enough to transport market supplies from the back of the mall to the front (and back again) each week.

Pays $75 per market day for 2-3 hours of work total.

Read more on the Third Place Commons jobs page.

Remember that the LFP Farmers Market has been redesigned for safety this year, and you can’t get better ventilation than the out-of-doors. So don’t let a little rain hold you back. This is the Pacific Northwest where we laugh at rain!

Just grab your face covering and head to the market Sunday, 10-2. See you at the market!

New time and other Memorial Day updates for LFP Farmers Market

Wednesday, May 20, 2020

This Memorial Day weekend brings a change to the Lake Forest Park Farmers Market with a new time, Sunday from 10am to 2pm.

But while the day will be a tiny bit shorter, the market won’t be short of supplies for your happily physically distanced Memorial Day barbecues. No matter what you are looking to barbecue, the market has what you want. And many items can be pre-ordered for a speedier trip in and out.

Get your pork and chicken from Well Fed Farms, lamb from Mollie Bear Farm, and of course fresh fish from Wilson Fish. This week, Wilson Fish hopes to have salmon (both fresh and smoked), halibut, and some cod.

You know what else is great for barbecuing? Fresh asparagus! Asparagus is at its peak right now - so full of flavor, perfect to steam or grill. The market has plenty of asparagus for everyone, along with loads of other great barbecue veggies for your celebration from folks like Bautista Farm, Garden Treasures, and Alvarez Organics.

For salad lovers, Cha New Life has beautiful lettuce heads – last week they featured over 1/2 a dozen varieties. And pick-up your adult beverages from Lupine Vineyards, Lopez Island Vineyards, and Greenwood Cider.

Need something sweet to complement your meal or finish off your feast? Get frozen berries from Sidhu (fresh coming soon!), orchard fruit from Martin Family Orchard, toffee & fudge from Pete’s Perfect Toffee, and delicious baked goods from Doll House Bakery.

In addition, the market is delighted to welcome back Holmquist Hazelnuts to the lineup. The Holmquist family has been growing hazelnuts for generations, bringing their crop to markets for over 30 years. Their products include roasted, raw and flavored hazelnuts, as well as hazelnut flour and oil. So many ways to eat or cook with and enjoy.

Also returning this weekend are Sno-Valley Mushrooms with their freshly grown mushrooms and mushroom logs which you can buy to grow your own mushrooms at home. Grown in Duvall, these mushrooms are a must to have at any barbecue sautéed with some baby Walla Walla onions.

The market also features some fun newcomers like Cedar Spring Farm with delicious jams and jellies, Got Soup?, and Ke Microgreens.

The market’s Covid safety plan is in full swing with the blessing of Public Health – Seattle and King County, so you know you can do your shopping safely. Just grab your face covering and come on down!

And remember to get there in plenty of time to finish your shopping before the new 2pm closing time. See you at the market!

Now Hiring: Two Positions at the LFP Farmers Market

Tuesday, May 19, 2020

Would you love to be a part of the Lake Forest Park Farmers Market community? Third Place Commons has two immediate openings for an experienced Market Manager and for a Market Set-up Assistant.

The Market Manager is responsible for the overall success of the market and oversees the safe daily operations of the market, including set-up, take-down, and operation during open hours.

The Market Manager also manages all vendor relations including weekly processing of payments and deposits, ensuring compliance with all market policies and health department requirements, and recruitment and applications (prior to the season). View the Market Manager position description for full details.

Each week, the Market Set-up Assistant set-ups and tears down the Third Place Commons information tent near the market entry, market lines and barriers, and assorted tables, chairs, and other supplies.

The set-up person also places and collects weekly signage and assists with occasional other special set-ups. Visit the Set-Up Assistant position description for more information.

Both positions are seasonal, contract positions that continue weekly through October 18th, with possible continuation for two additional markets in November and December.

These are immediate vacancies that are expected to be filled quickly, but will remain open until filled.

Physical distance at the LFP Farmers Market Sunday

Sunday, May 10, 2020

20 booths instead of 40-50

Story and photos by Cynthia Sheridan

Lake Forest Park farmers market kicked off the season with a Mother's Day opening of their venue.

Twenty stalls were available as opposed to the usual 40 and sometimes 50 vendors.

Hand washing stations

No prepared food was allowed, by order of King County market restrictions.

Shoppers lined up to enter - only 40 at a time allowed

A snake-like line-up enabled shoppers to browse safely, with a limit of no more than forty people in the open air space.

Many booths were selling flowers and plenty of buyers walked away with a Mother's Day bouquet.

Take the Shopper Oath before the LFP Farmers Market Sunday

Thursday, May 7, 2020

The ever popular Lake Forest Park Farmers Market opens this Sunday, May 10th (10 AM to 3 PM), and it will once again be chock-full of your favorite market fresh foods and Mother’s Day flowers.

However, there will also be some big changes as the market evolves to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic to ensure that the market is safe for everyone. Here are some of the ways the market will be different this year.

This year, the market must shift away from being a community event to being your quick in-and-out destination for essential food shopping. As the market evolves, the way the community shops must change, too.

Everyone must act together to reduce the spread of COVID-19 through strict social distancing, routine sanitation, and other measures designed to minimize risks for everyone. This is vital to the safety and health of shoppers, farmers, volunteers, and staff. Health and safety are paramount for all.

In addition, if the market doesn’t maintain social distancing and other commitments, it could be closed again. So before you head to the market this Sunday, please take the Market Shopper Oath to help ensure the safety and success of the market.

THE SHOPPER OATH

As a responsible market shopper, I will:
  • STAY HOME if I am sick or if I have been in contact with someone who is sick.
  • Make a shopping list before visiting the market.
  • Pre-order and prepay vendors whenever possible. (Pre-order info here.)
  • Designate one shopper per household.
  • Leave my pet at home unless it is a service animal.
  • Wear a face covering to the market and know that I will not be discriminated against for this choice.
  • Pay attention to modifications and signs and adhere to them.
  • Not touch products, but instead ask a vendor for what I would like.
  • Maintain 6 feet of space at all times. I will look for physical cues like tape, chalk, and signs to help remind me.
  • Shop quickly and efficiently. I won't loiter for chats with my favorite vendors - I will offer them a smile (behind my mask) and a wave.
  • Use the provided hand sanitizer and hand wash stations at the market.
  • Avoid touching my eyes, nose, mouth, and face in general.
  • Cover my cough or sneeze with a tissue, then dispose of it. Then wash my hands.
  • Set an example for all by being the most responsible shopper I can possibly be!

Also, if you are at risk (65+, underlying conditions, immunosuppressed, or pregnant), please consider staying home and sending someone else to do your shopping.

Thank you for supporting the LFP Farmers Market and its vendors – and for shopping responsibly!

Shoreline Farmers Market will be back on June 6 - in a different - but familiar location

Tuesday, May 5, 2020

Farmers Market season is upon us but COVID has put a speedbump in our plans. Gov. Inslee has deemed farmers markets an essential service and are allowed to operate under modified operations.

The Shoreline Farmers Market is working closely with the WA Dept. of Health and the King County Public Health to plan a safe farmers market for the community.

The market will certainly look and feel different this season, but there are five weeks until opening day and we all know how much situations can change in five weeks.

Stay up to date with market announcements and new shopping guidelines by following Shoreline Farmers Market on Facebook and Instagram or visit our website to sign up for our newsletter and learn more about our vendors and how you can support them during this time.

Our biggest change this season will be a brand new location!

The location is familiar, the old US Bank parking lot right by the main entrance to Central Market off of Westminster Way and 155th Street. If you’re going to Central Market you won’t be able to miss us!

If you want to help support The Shoreline Farmers Market please consider donating or exploring a sponsorship. Each dollar contributed will go directly toward supporting our Power of Produce Kids Program and the SNAP/EBT matching program.

You can also share our social media with your friends and family and join us when we open on Saturday, June 6th.

Although we know COVID-19 will change the feel of the market, we are so hopeful that the wonderful relationships and support we’ve cultivated over the years will help us weather these speedbumps.

We hope the community will show their love for the market and join us for opening day - Saturday, June 6th.

The Lake Forest Park Farmers Market opens Sunday, May 10

Monday, May 4, 2020

Ready for some great news (at last)? The Lake Forest Park Farmers Market is ready to open on schedule on Sunday, May 10th from 10am to 3pm!

In the Coronavirus era, farmers markets have been declared by Governor Inslee as essential businesses like grocery stores. However, the market must undergo many changes to ensure the safety of all shoppers, vendors, volunteers, and staff before it can open.

After working closely with partners at the state, county, and local levels, the market has been redesigned in a new pared down format where physical distancing and a high level of sanitation can be maintained for everyone. The number one goal is to make sure the market is a safe place for you to do your weekly food shopping.

The great news is you’ll still be able to get all your farm-fresh produce, protein, and other favorite specialty items from your favorite market vendors! And yes, you can get your Mother’s Day flowers, too!

As of May 1st, both the State of Washington and King County have given the greenlight to flowers, just in time for Mother’s Day! (But please note, there will be pre-arranged bouquets only.)

The LFP Farmers Market is a program of Third Place Commons and it is your support that makes it possible. This week is a week of giving with #GivingTuesdayNow and GiveBIG back-to-back, the perfect chance to show your support for the market and your Commons community. If you love the market, please consider making a gift today here or at ThirdPlaceCommons.org.

When the market opens, expect it to look and feel very different. For the time being, the market must shift away from a community gathering space to the place where you do your quick in-and-out shopping.

A few of the changes you can expect to see:

  • Fewer vendors will be at the market so that those who are there can spread out with more physical distance between them – and between shoppers.
  • Many vendors will be offering pre-orders to minimize your time at the market. Check the Third Place Commons website for details. (A list will be uploaded and updated as details become available.)
  • There will be a designated entrance and exit, and shopper entry will be controlled to eliminate crowding.
  • Vendors and staff will be required to wear masks or face coverings. Shoppers will also be asked to wear face coverings.
  • Social distancing will be enforced for all participants.
  • Handwashing and hand sanitizer will be available.

There will be many more updates on the market – including what will be asked of market shoppers – as opening day approaches. Please be sure to stay tuned for further important updates.

In this difficult, topsy-turvy time, the Lake Forest Park Farmers Market is a welcome source of sunshine, providing the community access to fresh, healthy market foods (including great organic options) while supporting the many wonderful farmers and vendors who rely on the market each year.

Their continued success this season will help ensure they survive this very difficult year and enable both vendors and market alike to come back, hopefully stronger than ever, in years to come.

In a time when many are struggling more than ever, the market also continues to support low-income neighbors through the locally funded Market Bucks food assistance program. (You can make a gift to support Market Bucks here.)

The market also gladly accepts WIC and Senior Vouchers, SNAP benefits, and is now participating in the statewide SNAP Market Match program, providing SNAP recipients with a dollar-for-dollar match for their SNAP benefits up to $10 daily.

So grab your shopping list (and face covering!) and come on down to the market this Sunday, 10-3!

Last farmers market of the season Sunday at LFP Farmers Market

Saturday, October 19, 2019

Photo courtesy Rotary Club of Lake Forest Park

LFP Police Chief Mike Harden and LFP Mayor Jeff Johnson teamed up to tell people about Lake Forest Park at a recent Sunday Farmers Market at Town Center, intersection of Bothell and Ballinger Way NE.

Besides a possible sighting of mayors or police chiefs, there's plenty going on at the LFP Farmers Market and Sunday, October 20 from 10am to 3pm is your last chance to experience an outdoor market this season.

All the produce at the market comes from growers who are either certified organic or in the process of being certified. You can trust what you buy.

The flowers are wonderful. Some vendors have created variety bouquets, some let you choose what you want. Fresh cut that day, they will last for several weeks (if you remember to keep water in the vase...)

There are usually 4-5 places with ready to eat food, not including the ice cream. You can buy fish, and sometimes meat. You can buy gifts, either of food like honey or jam, or crafts.

There are places under canopies to sit and eat and the people watching is great! There are buskers to entertain while you shop.

Happily, it isn't really the end. The Commons sponsors two indoor markets - one in November and one in December.

Last market of the season for Shoreline farmers market

Sunday, October 6, 2019

A vendor hands out samples to a young customer

Photos by Steven H. Robinson

Shoreline has their last farmers market on Saturday before folding their canopies for the season.

Magaña Farms

The weather was clear and crisp and the produce reflected the colors of the fall season.

Market Chef

People lined up for free samples from the Market Chef, who cooks from produce she buys at the market that day.

Merlone Geier and Shoreline Place

Merlone Geier staff were there with posters and flyers to explain the plans to redevelop the old Sear site into Shoreline Place.

Activities for kids

A table was set up with chess boards for the kids, staffed by an instructor.

Before the fall

Of course it fell, but it was darned impressed up to that point!

Ronnda Cadle

The market has been able to schedule a full slate of buskers every market day to entertain the shoppers.

After the fall

The market was wonderful for seasonable vegetables, entertainment, and information, but it's Fall and everything must end - even a giant block structure.

But wait - you have a reprieve. The Lake Forest Park Farmers Market in Town Center at the intersection of Bothell and Ballinger Way NE runs through October 20 - so you have three more chances.

Shoreline Farmers Market ends season on Saturday

Thursday, October 3, 2019

Come celebrate the last Shoreline Farmers Market with us!

Resident Chef Naomi will be handing out samples of delicious fresh-baked pumpkin bread. Central Market has generously donated pumpkins for our kids PoP Program. Kids wearing a costume receive a free pumpkin to decorate on site. Plus we'll have live music all day, 40+ vendors, and lots of delicious prepared food.

Although we are celebrating, it is bittersweet ending our 8th farmers market season. The market continues to change with the community and we are looking forward to the changes that lie ahead of us.

Eggplant is misunderstood, but it doesn't have to be

From the Shoreline Farmers Market

We've all had eggplant that wasn't, let's say, texturally appealing.

That's probably because it wasn't cooked with care. Eggplant can be a delicious meat substitution or a fantastic side dish.

It is a versatile vegetable - it can be baked, fried, mashed into a dip, roasted, grilled, stuffed, or braised.

There are a few key things to keep in mind when preparing eggplant:
  1. Embrace the char - burn it! Charring the outside creates a deep smokey flavor that will win you over!
  2. Don't forget to poke holes in the flesh if you're cooking it whole. If you don't, it could burst.
  3. Make sure to salt generously and drain if you're cooking eggplant slices. This helps to reduce bitterness and creates a firmer flesh.

My go-to eggplant dish is Eggplant Parmesan with Bread Crumb Topping. It's simple and a crowd pleaser (it has gooey cheese- so yea). If you're looking to for an easier introduction to eggplant try this Roasted Eggplant Baba Ghanoush recipe from Bon Appétit.
