Donuts, alpacas and more at LFP Farmers Market Closing Day Party, Sunday Oct 21

Monday, October 15, 2018

The Lake Forest Park Farmers Market is ending its regular season with a bang and celebrating the market with a Closing Day Party, this Sunday, October 21, 2018 from 10am to 3pm.

So what makes a great Closing Day Party? Alpacas? Donuts? Halloween dog “treats-for-tricks” and costumes? Giveaways for all ages? Seasonal fruits and vegetables, farm-fresh meat and eggs, and locally produced specialty items?

It will all be at the LFP Farmers Market this Sunday!

With Halloween, just around the corner, the market will definitely be in the spooky spirit. Costumes are encouraged for everyone – but especially the kiddos and precious pups in the family.

Bring the little ones in costume by the info booth to claim their Halloween tchotchke of choice, and bring your doggies in costume by the booth to claim a special treat! No dog costume? No worries! Your canine companions can get “treats-for-tricks” as well! (And yes, “Sit” counts as a trick.)

There will also be washable, reusable produce bags on offer so that grown-ups can claim some goodies, too. Stop by the Third Place Commons info booth to get your fun freebies (one per person) while supplies last!

The whole family will also love visiting with the beloved Heart of Dreams alpacas who will make a special visit to the market just for the closing day festivities. Stop by to say hello to these cuties, feed them a carrot or two, and learn more about these sweet beasties.

Also returning to the market by popular demand, one-day only guest vendors, Daddy’s Donuts! These fresh mini-donuts, which were rated by BuzzFeed as the best donuts in Washington State, were a big hit when Daddy’s Donuts were guest vendors at the market opening day. So you won’t want to miss them this weekend.

Speaking of missing things, you know you’ll miss your favorite market vendors and all that amazing farm-fresh and locally made market goodness when the season ends. So don’t miss your last chance of the regular season to load up on the farm-fresh autumn fruits and vegetables, meat, and eggs that you love.

And be sure to stock up on all your favorite locally produced goodies before the end of the season including jams, pasta, candies, sauces, coffee, wine, hard cider, baked treats, and more.

Plus, mark your calendar for two bonus indoor farmers markets – paired with annual holiday crafts fairs – coming on November 18th and December 16th. And watch for updates on a possible pop-up outdoor market on November 4th (weather permitting). Save the dates now and stay tuned for more details.

The LFP Farmers Market is presented by Third Place Commons, a community-supported 501(c)3 nonprofit organization dedicated to fostering real community in real space. The market takes place in the parking lot of LFP Town Center adjacent to City Hall at the intersection of Bothell Way NE and Ballinger Way NE.

Buskers Day at the LFP Farmers Market on Sunday, 9/30

Tuesday, September 25, 2018

Last year’s Buskers Day was a hit, so the Lake Forest Park Farmers Market is doing it again! This coming Sunday, September 30th, the market will feature three knockout talents who will entertain you with a musical journey both unexpected and thrilling.

Presented each Sunday by Third Place Commons, the LFP Farmers Market always welcomes terrific local buskers who regularly drop-in to fill the market with great acoustic music. But for one day only, the market is turning up the microphone and shining the spotlight on some truly talented and accomplished musicians who will knock your socks off with their musical chops.

The market will open with the gifted indie singer/songwriter Abby London from 10 to 11am. A classically trained musician with an ear for everything from pop, rock, and hip hop to folk and show tunes, Abby’s sound is reminiscent of revered icons like Regina Spektor and Ani DiFranco. But as you’ll see and hear, with her clever lyrics and unique perspective, Abby is an original unto herself.

PK Dwyer, blues busker extraordinaire, takes the mic from 11:30am to 1pm. PK is credited as the first person ever to busk at Pike Place Market, and ten years later he won the First Annual Street Performers Competition in Paris. He has continued playing hard ever since! PK has made a lifelong career as an esteemed street performer and still plays about 300 dates a year, dazzling folks with his virtuosity and high energy originals. Be sure to stop by and see what all the fuss is about!

Finally, the day will wrap up from 1:30 to 3pm with the dreamy, ethereal beauty of electric cellist Gretchen Yanover. A classical musician by training, Gretchen discovered “a new voice for her instrument” with the introduction of a loop sampler. Gretchen builds hypnotic melodies and atmospheric landscapes right before your eyes that will captivate your heart and fuel your imagination. She’s too good to miss!

All three of these musicians are unique and gifted performers who will delight and inspire with their fabulous music. So when you see them and love them (and you will!), be sure to tip them!

They also all have music for sale on their websites, so when you head home from the market, you can download their great music to enjoy again and again.

So don’t miss the fun at the Lake Forest Park Farmers Market, this Sunday (and every Sunday through October 21st) from 10-3pm in the parking lot of the Lake Forest Park Town Center at 17171 Ballinger Way NE.

See you at the market!

Shoreline Farmers Market is on the beet

Thursday, September 20, 2018

Shoreline Farmers Market will be at Shoreline Place every Saturday from 10am-3pm, through October 6th.

Saturday, September 22nd is the first official day of Autumn. The season has turned, school is back in session, rain boots are coming out of storage, and holidays are only months away. Time to enjoy the last of the market season as sadly we only have 3 more weeks left in the season.

Beets that are this big must have some amazing compost! Hogstead not only sells these enormous beets but they have fresh chicken eggs and delicious pork products from their family farm in Marysville.

We hope you come out and join us in celebrating the Shoreline Community.

See you Saturday!

Ring in a new bell at the LFP Farmers Market Sunday

Wednesday, September 19, 2018

New Bell Ringing Ceremony Sunday, 9/23, at the LFP Farmers Market

Did you know that the Lake Forest Park Farmers Market opens each week with the ringing of a special market bell? And that the vendors aren't permitted to sell for the day until that bell rings?

Unfortunately, the old, beloved bell was lost recently, and so the market has had to make due with borrowed bells and occasional verbal bells.

“What are verbal bells?” you ask.
That’s the market manager walking around calling, “Ding ding! Ding ding!”
Market folks are nothing if not creative problem solvers!

But now it's time to ring in a new era with a new bell!

Get to the market a few minutes before 10am this Sunday, September 23, 2018 to join in a mini-ceremony to welcome the new market bell and once again start the market day with its dulcet tones. It will be a bit of silly fun and a great chance to get your market shopping done well ahead of the Seahawks game.

By the way, are you wondering why the opening bell is important? The market is scheduled to open at 10Aam each Sunday, but if some vendors set-up and start selling early, then it disadvantages those who begin selling at the official market start time – and the market strives to ensure the success of all its vendors equally.

Occasionally, all the vendors may be ready early, in which case the bell may ring a little early. Then everyone gets to sell before 10.

But if the bell doesn’t ring, the market hasn’t opened.

So whether it’s 10 o’clock or not, the opening bell tells both vendors and shoppers, “Yes, we’re open!”

For this week’s ceremony, the market will open right on time, but you’ll want to get there a few minutes early so you don’t miss the fun.

The Lake Forest Park Farmers Market is presented by Third Place Commons, a community-supported 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization committed to fostering real community in real space. The market takes place at the corner of Bothell Way NE and Ballinger Way NE in the parking lot of the LFP Town Center. The season runs every Sunday, rain or shine, through October 21st. See you at the market!

Friends of the LFP Library have fun at the pop up book sale

Friends of the LFP Library book sale at the
LFP Farmers Market Sunday

By Carol Geil and Sharon Green

Booklovers roaming the LFP Farmers Market Sunday were drawn to the boxes of bargain books at the Friends of the LFP Library table. It was a treat to watch kids’ faces light up as they discovered their next great read.

Folks swapped recommendations for favorite cookbooks as they perused the collection on hand -- $1 each! Browsers gasped with delight as they found something they had been meaning to pick up, or an unexpected treasure.

Thanks are due to all the volunteers for their assistance with Sunday's Pop Up Summer Book Sale -- to those who provided behind the scenes support in planning and organizing, to the enthusiastic book sellers who promoted the Friends, to husbands Hugo Draye and Jim Geil and to Mike Dee who helped with set up and clean up, to Connie Harris our treasurer who handled the money so efficiently, and to the Farmers Market which welcomed us at a Sponsor's Table.

During the book sale, there was a steady stream of visitors and folks seemed to enjoy browsing the selection of books. It was great to gain glimpses into the lives of the browsers: the teacher from Brookside Elementary School who purchased books for use by her 5th grade students; the family from Laos who welcomed English language books for their bilingual/trilingual children; the many folks who discussed food and recipes with us.

It was fun to see children sitting on the ground reading books. It was wonderful to share in the lively atmosphere of the Market. The temperature was comfortable. And the rain held off!

In terms of money, we made $354, which goes directly into the coffers of KCLS, to support their great community programs. More than the income was the opportunity to generate good will by participating in the community activity of the Farmers Market and to enjoy interacting with members of the community and with each other. We had fun!

Shoreline Farmers Market Saturdays

Sunday, July 29, 2018

Photos by Steven H. Robinson

Farmers markets at their core are a chance to connect growers directly to consumers. Produce bought at Farmers Markets are nearly always fresher and last longer than store bought produce. Many of the growers (but not all) are pesticide free and many picked their produce in the morning before coming to the market.

Flower growers don't have to have a brick and mortar store. They pick their blooms and bring them to market.

Food producers don't have to deal with a middle man. This is particularly important for products like honey, which are only available certain times of the year.

Organizations can get out and talk to people directly. Conversations can be held and all questions answered in a way far more direct than email or messaging.

The markets have all added ready to eat food as a service to their shoppers - and to help keep them there longer! Shoreline had Seoul Bowl, hot dogs, coffee, pastries, gyros, ice pops and more!

If you missed Saturday's market, there will be another one next Saturday, 10am to 3pm, Shoreline Place, N 155th and Westminster Way, upper level by Central Market.

Lake Forest Park's market is Sunday, 10am to 3pm, Town Center, intersection Ballinger and Bothell Way.
